I went in there to look at SUPs. He had one out front for around $900 or so, but that seemed awfully expensive to me, so I declined. I wound up buying 6 on craigslist and fb marketplace for about HALF that cost - for ALL of them! Now, some of them needed fixing (though many were nearly new), and since I'm pretty good with f/g & foam (and paint matching), I had a lot of fun personalizing my boards and making them all look like new. One of my other acquisitions was a Bark that I bought for $150, then fixed and flipped for $800! That would NEVER HAPPEN at this place. In fact, you'd be lucky to sell a board for half of what you paid for it, and I suspect this is pretty much what he does - picks up used equipment cheap and then flips it at a jacked-up price. When you buy on fb & craigslist, you're just paying for the item itself, not for the item PLUS the seller's salary, rent and overhead. It just makes no sense to do that, especially in this economy. Personally, I didn't find the owner (the old guy) all that helpful (in fact, I might go so far as to call him "anti-helpful"). He's long on BS and arrogance, and short on useful information. I guess it would be an "OK" place if you're new to these sports and don't really have any idea where to begin (and don't mind paying a lot of money to "learn"), but once you know what kind of equipment you want, there's basically no reason to ever go back there. I've never been back, or needed to, as the selection is terribly limited, especially compared to fb marketplace. Recently picked up a soft rack to attach a newly acquired paddleboard from Facebook marketplace. This local shop was full of knowledge and passion for both windsurfing, paddleboarding, and kayaks. The owner was there and was very personable and knowledgeable in helping a total noob figure out how to affix a paddleboard to the top of his car. He told me the hard rack options are much more versatile especially for highway travel, but for driving to the beach and back in Long Beach specifically - a soft rack would do the trick. Dropped by the Windsurf shop last week when my OG Hobie 13 broke a rudder string. Not many kayak repair shops left, fewer that work on Hobie's pedal drive & steering and virtually none closer to us, Tanker Dodgers on the San Pedro side of the LA Harbor. First off I was a little surprised when I had to make an appointment about a week down the road. It's a shop space problem. Drag I had to wait that long to get back out on the water but totally mitigated by the fact, Jeff, the pirate who owns the place started work on my ride the minute we put it up on the sawhorses he uses for a work station. Figured I might as well hang out while he did his thing and maybe steal a few secrets. It worked out far better than that. During the repair, Jeff began to spin his many tales of the places he has dived, windsurfed and caught waves at around the world. Islands I never heard of. Reefs he's seen that simply make you want to get up, book a flight and go see it yourself. Surf and skateboard history got thrown in too. I also learned how LA and So Cal in general is now, finally capturing rainwater, filtering thousands of gallons through the soil and storing it in reservoirs. Jeff also solved a kayak mystery that bugged me for years. Why do some great spots require you to quarantine your kayak with them sometimes for weeks before you can hit the H20 ? It's Parasite that must be from Venus because they can bake in the sun for months and then magically come back to life as an invasive alien species that will take over the formerly pristine spot. I needed a part for my Hobie kayak so I stopped at the store to see if it was in stock or could be ordered. The opening was roped off so I patiently waited at the door while the owner was inside talking with a customer. I waited 5 minutes for some acknowledgment. Finally, the customer walked to the doorway with the owner following. The owner wouldn't stop talking to the customer so I continued to wait with the two right next to me. Owner didn't even acknowledge me. Eventually, the customer had to basically run away. Finally, he looks at me without even saying a word. I told him what I was looking for and he said he didn't have it. I asked if he could order it and he said "not now" and started to walk away! Came off as arrogant and inconsiderate. Both the owner and his wife are patient, knowledgable, and customer service oriented. I spent time in the shop, and took a windsurf lesson from Jeff. Many years back I was at a lake and rented a windsurf rig but had no idea how to windsurf and it was not only a waste of money, but of time and effort. I was convinced I couldn't windsurf. Fast forward forty years, the desire was still there to see if I could windsurf. Jeff spent time in the shop helping me understand the theory and safety factors needed to succeed. Then he loaded up his vehicle with two rigs, and we were off to a beautiful bay where the waters were calm and the temperature just fantastic. First, I learned how to set up the rig (board to sail, etc.), then he had me on the board learning in real time with a tether rope to pull me back in as I learned (and went off course). After plenty of hands on learning, I windsurfed on the bay with Jeff on his rig nearby to encourage and continue teaching. It was money WELL SPENT. I have NO REGRETS, other than I wished I had built up the courage to try it many many years earlier. My short size (5'4") along with being older, and overweight did not prevent me from windsurfing and enjoying feeling young and free on the water. I went there with my girlfriend yesterday after a ton of researches and we decided that we're going to buy a Hobie Mirage Oasis. We marked all of the available Hobie dealers near by and stopped by everyone of them. We arrived at this store at 11.35 AM and was greeted by a strong odor of urine and a sign that says they open at 12.00 on Friday. Well... at least they're still in business in spite of how the store looks. It's just less than half an hour so we decided to just sit in the car and wait. A woman showed up in jogging clothes finally at 12.25 and let us in. We waited for her to settle her stuff down and told her to take her time; trust me I know how to be nice because you often connect better with people especially when you do a business. We stated that we want to buy a Hobie Mirage Oasis next week then was immediately asked for a deposit without even telling us how much is the full price. All the while I was smiling throughout the conversation, without even a smirk was returned my way. So after I asked for the price and just out of my curiosity if they have any promotion, we were given some very ambiguous answers. First she said that "the price is very competitive" so there's not much they can do so... "No free stuff". Some other people should have taken that as a minor insult by now but I kept calm thinking that might be just the way she is. Other dealers often give you allowance based on the price you pay, so you could spend that on their in-house merchandises. It doesn't hurt to ask. We're not a kind of people who just go around throwing our $3,000 savings on some random places. This is a big purchase for us and I believe for many other people too. Then she said if we pay with cash then she could probably give us a small discount that's from what's to be charged by the credit card company. But since we're not one of their "regular customers", she mentioned, she can't do much for us... Well... If I'm one of your regular customer then I wouldn't be buying my first kayak today. This was to be my starting point to become 'your regular customer'. I wouldn't start collecting kayak accessories for a year so I could become a regular customer and then finally I could buy a kayak with all the good deals! Next I asked about the price she charges for Hobie Trax 2 Cart, she sighed and grabbed a catalog while saying "You should take one of these so you can look it up on your own". We do have that catalog but the reason I asked is that I want to know if she would charge at a different price or not, but she acted like we're too stupid to read the catalog and wasting her time. After that she started to ask for the deposit again and when she saw that we're backing off then she said "That is all I can give you right now but it might be different when you're ready to make a purchase" Well... No, thanks. We've heard enough so I told her after she once again asked for the deposit (for the forth or fifth time I can't recall) that we actually have a better price elsewhere and for once in the whole conversation she looked interested. $2,849 for the Hobie Mirage Oasis. 15% off $195 Trax 2 Cart. I stated. "Well... We can't compete with that" She said. "That's fine" I replied while turning around "Where is it?" "What store?" She yelled "Well... I can't tell you" Honestly, at this moment I wouldn't buy from this store even if she gave me the same price. "Well... We can't compete with that if you don't tell me which store it is". I still insisted "I know... That's fine" I turned around and walk out the door while she was making a nonverbal remark hoping that would make me feel insulted further. I don't have to tell you at this point that that moment would be the last time I ever stepped my feet into that pitiful store. We ended up going back to another store which I have mentioned the price earlier where we got a great deal and we put the deposit down, friendly staffs and honest people. They would get off from the chair and walk half the store to describe a particular product, how to use it, what's their experience on using those items, giving recommendations and diligently answering every question clearly. That's the spirit! Not a lot of smile, just a grin now and then but you can always feel that they care by the action. Sadly this Long Beach Windsurf & Kayak Center staff doesn't seem to realize that she just missed $3,000 that she could seriously put into dusting up the store. PS. I don't know other staffs in that store but judging from the good reviews people gave (him?), it was unfortunate that I never get to meet a nicer person. read more

The Cliffs Notes: Cheap rentals, fine kayaks, pleasant staff, CASH.ONLY. The Tolstoy: Two girlfriends and I rented kayaks to paddle around in a few Saturdays ago. We're hoping to take a kayaking trip next spring and, since two of the three of us had never even been in a kayak before, we thought it would be a good idea to practice. They had plenty of kayaks at 10:30 when we got there, and at 12:30 when we got back. They also have plenty of auxiliary equipment - paddles, life jackets - so there's no worry you won't out on the water. Unlike some other places we read about, you pay by the hour AFTER you get back. The rate was like $8/hr and it's prorated for partials (meaning if you go out for 2 hours and 15 min, you only pay 2 x $8 + 0.25 x $8). The equipment seemed to be in good repair; all the water that ended up in my kayak was there because of me. They give you a water proof map of the areas, showing where you can - and cannot - go in a kayak. We went all the way up into the wildlife area. It's not that big, but motor boats aren't allowed so it's really pleasant for first timers. This is a cash-only establishment. I repeat, CASH ONLY. If you live off of plastic like I do, hit the bank first. I don't think there's a convenient ATM. Bring money. You'd be smart to take a bottle of water with you. (We were not smart.) There's a beach-side food shack that may or may not be affiliated (also cash only!); the food's not good, but it's readily available and that can be important. All in all, this is a great place to rent kayaks from for a first timer. Easy to get to, plenty of street and beach parking, good rates, all-inclusive equipment rentals, in an area that's easy to paddle around. Worth visiting again. read more

I kayak with open water swimmers between catalina island and palos verdes, starting at midnight and sometimes lasting up to 15 hours. I had a problem with a kayak I bought on Craigslist (I did NOT do my homework) and Jeff took what could have been a dire situation and turned it around completely. He knew exactly what he was doing, knew what had to be fixed and he stuck with it until the last detail was finished. I went to check out some inline skates by Rollerblade. Jeff, the owner was really mindful about distance and safety due to covid. My boyfriend and I stayed outside and I got to try the blades on using a bench he set up. Jeff explained that the skates I was looking at were the most basic model that his shop was willing to sell from Rollerblade brand with a good conscience - meaning if you go with a lower model, you're going to end up spending more because either your wheels will wear out or in the long run, you'll grow out of them and want more out of your skates. He also gave me some good tips on how to get back into blading - stance, breaking, safety. I loved the skates and found his prices very competitive so I decided to buy them along with some wrist guards. We ended up chatting for a long time about all kinds of things. We really enjoyed our experience and I was happy to support a small business. Jeff told us he's had the shop for 40 years! I'm so glad we found this neighborhood gem. Later that day, I ripped around on my new blades and it was like I was 11 years old again. read more

Jeff the owner has been in the business and is a windsurfer himself. ie. both a practitioner and retailer who knows what he is talking about. I went to his store this year after stopping windsurfing in 1999. I had moved to Japan and gear went into storage. He is at the little beach in the Long Beach boat harbour beach area and does private lessons for beginners and a number of people who windsurfs are there in the afternoons. Check out the store for stand up paddle boards/wind surf equipment and kayaks. I know the big box retailers like Sports Chalet and even REI has some equipment. but guarantee they wont have a teacher like Jeff to help you out with the right equipment and enthusiasm for the sport. This place is like the A16 for backpacking/hiking for Watersports. Support your local store that provides information and adivse. read more

I was about to buy a kayak from this place because my girlfriend was in town and the weather was perfect. However the owner called parking enforcement on my car parked out front of store for more then the allotted hour. (Can't strap a kayak on the roof before going to lunch) I asked the officer why he enforced so tough on a sunday (1 hour and 8 minutes... no meter) . He told me the business owner called and complained. And sure enough the owner was just sitting in his shop just smirking, meanwhile I accepted a $49 ticket and saved $800 by not getting a kayak. A woman in crutches asked me if I needed something, I introduced myself and asked the next questions, : 1. Q/ Where are the good local spots to windsurf? A/ Wherever you have water and wind 2. Ok I said, what about wind conditions, what are the typical conditions during summer? A/ They are good, some days are windy. 3. At this point I just wanted to insult her, but I decided no to. So I asked, ok tell me what are the sail sizes that I should buy if I decide to windsurf in this area. A/ Between 3 to 7m2. Obviously there was no need for more questions so I walked away. I wanted to set the record a little straighter on this Yelp review. Jeff and the gang are VERY knowledgeable about all of the products they sell. Comparing the service experience between them and Capt. Kirk's in San Pedro is LAUGHABLE. Illustration: I had dabbled in windsurfing a little before moving to Long Beach two years ago. My neighbor conveniently had an unused rig collecting dust in his garage. I commenced sailing it a little bit and progressed to the point that I was looking to get into the harness and straps. Problem, didn't have a harness. I had a friend who had a really positive experience with Kirk's in purchasing and learning kiteboarding, so I went there. When I began asking questions about windsurfing, I was immediately hustled to drop the windsurfer and pick up a kite. When the Kirk's staff realized I wasn't buying a kite that day, I was sold (admittedly for a very good price) a harness that DID NOT FIT ME. Over the past six months, Jeff has steered me from being a relative novice, to being a windsurfer who is comfortable blasting over the water in 25kts wind. He has never pressured me to buy something I didn't need, never suggested paid instruction, and taught me lessons and insights into the sport through a gentle question and answer process over many hours and many afternoons. I have purchased a lot of used equipment from him, in little dribs and drabs that surely aren't profitable considering the time he has invested in me. Regarding hours of operation, If they aren't convenient for you, make an appointment. Broken gear on a breezy morning that promises a gusty afternoon? Give a call, Jeff will help you out. Regarding making deals, The margin for a small business is fine indeed, and face it brother, it is an expensive sport. Regarding trustworthiness, If Jeff is honest about his competitors, informing you of their shortcomings and allowing you to choose to do business at either vendor, I'd say that is pretty fair. Kirk's is a neat shop, with friendly folks who want to sell you some stuff. You will just be better served (as a windsurfer) at LBWC. Regarding In-Line Skates: Not my sport, but Jeff gives used bearings out of high end skates to kids with blown cheap bearings in their Wal-mart skates, nuff said. I'm an experienced sailor but a beginner windsurfer. I took a lesson with Jeff on Alamitos Bay and learned a great deal - more then I did on a recent trip to France where windsurfing is mainstream. Jeff has a vast knowledge base about windsurfing from which to draw upon for lessons. After that lesson I decided to make my first gear purchase. Jeff helped me pick the best board for my current level as well as where I will be for at least two years. He also helped me pick a sail, mast, and boom combination that will serve me as I improve without having to purchase new masts as I go up in sail size. That will save a lot of money in the long run! Jeff went the extra mile for me when I tasked him with finding a padded travel bag for my new equipment that had wheels. This was no easy task as the board that I picked is unique. He found a bag from a manufacturer that he did not already sell in his store. He purchased the bag on my behalf without knowing if it would serve my needs. Suffice to say, he found the perfect bag for my gear and I am happily flying to my first windsurfing vacation in a couple days! Just a follow-up to my earlier rave review. I purchased a used Hobie Adventure Island. The price was very reasonable. Although well taken care of it was well-used, and I expected to have to have some upgrades and repairs done, as I sail it hard (in the open ocean) and often (two-four times a week). Jeff has spent hours, literally, working on various little problems I've had with it--nothing major, just replacing/repairing worn parts, etc.--and I can't get him to charge me! He says it's "all part of the service." Not anywhere else I've been. Jeff will do everything he can to keep you on the water (or the street, if you're skating); someone with deep knowledge and personal experience with everything he sells. He will match you with the board, boat, SUP, or skates that are right for you, and help you get the most out of them. read more

Very helpful and knowledgeable about their products which range from kayaks & rollerblades to windsurferes & SUP's (stand-up paddle boards). They want you to be safe and have fun on the water with the equipment that is right for you. My son and I just completed windsurfing lessons with Jeff. He is an awesome instructor and person--calm, incredibly knowledgeable, organized, positive, constructive, and he keeps it enjoyable. Jeff is a pioneer windsurfer and is extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the sport. He is a US Sailing certified instructor who takes students through the basics in the classroom and then let's you practice on land before moving to the water. His one-on-one sailing lesson on the water is so well done--he cruises along with you as your wingman and gives just the right instruction/reminders at the right time. I took a third lesson today and feel completely ready to windsurf. These lessons were a great value and my son and I know we "learned the right way" so we have all the fundamentals to pursue this sport. We highly recommend Jeff.
