They also installed more than 35 pallets of sod effectively and within the timeframe they promised. Longhorn Lawns did a exemplary job installing our new French Drain. We put this off for years, but couldn't wait any more after the monsoon rains last Spring. I contacted Longhorn Lawns to do the work based on Yelp reviews. JP and Matt scheduled us and sent out one of their top crews to do the work. The crew worked meticulously to get the drain angle just right for the drainage. To accomplish the task, they had to use a jackhammer to get through all of the limestone. Note: It was ~100 degrees the day they were here. They worked tirelessly all day to get the job just right. When they finished testing the drain, they put all of the plants back in there places and added more mulch to make it look fresh. Needless to say, they did an awesome job and I highly recommend Longhorn Lawns for your next work. My beds looks fantastic and now I am ready for the next big rain. read more

Outstanding hardscape and drainage work by Longhorn Lawns! Very knowledgeable project manager. Good communication, hard-working employees and reasonable pricing. We wanted to enlarge our flagstone patio, remove some existing planter boxes, improve our drainage from rain and remove some shrubbery. I had several companies come out to give me quotes in late February. Austin Taylor from Longhorn Lawns was by far the most knowledgeable. He came up with better solutions than the ideas I had originally and was very knowledgeable when he explained the reasons for his suggestions. Austin sent a very detailed proposal a few days later and was polite and accommodating every time I'd send him an add-on or a change. The employees that came to do the work were all polite, courteous, and very neat. And they arrived each day when they said they would and I never once saw them not working very hard. At completion of the job they went overboard to make sure they left our yard clean. Austin came out to the job at least once a day to check that everything was going smoothly and on-plan. Our yard looks great and we are very happy with it! We had new underground drain pipes installed. We've had several big storms since the work was done and the water is flowing perfectly out of our yard. No more small ponds after the rains. I have used Longhorn Lawns for many years now and the service has gone from okay to pretty terrible. Very unresponsive office and none of the workers speak any English so communication is difficult. The work for the lawn; mowing, edging, blowing, - both front and back- is done in 15 minutes with the results showing the lack of time and care. No thought or care to your property or needs. This company also does large projects. Buyer beware! A project I had them bid on came in at $5500.00 The company that did the project, and did a fantastic job, ( House To House Lawns) , cost a total of $2000.00 Longhorn Lawns no dodoes a good job on their projects but are ridiculously over cost! We hired Longhorn Lawns to replace our irrigation after we built our pool and then complete the backyard with landscaping. We also had them replace our builder landscaping in the front with xeriscaping and then hired them again to set poles and hang lights around the fire pit. They were on time, within budget, communicative, and creative during the process. They made a mistake by breaking the fill line to the pool and fixed it without question. Yup.. they deserve all the accolades received here on Yelp. The Suze meister found Longhorn on Yelp when our current lawn care dudes didn't communicate as well as we would of liked, so we choose to try another option. We contacted Longhorn and Julie was very polite and professional and she scheduled a visit for a quote. They showed up promptly on time and provided us with a quote, which was actually less then our previous vendor. They do a complete job, show up when they are suppose to and recently dealt with a problem very well. One of their guys unfortunately ran over a fairly large sprinkler head. We wished they would of told us when it happened but when I noticed it the next day, we called to let them know. A couple of days later the owner came out himself to have a look. He replaced the sprinkler head and then tested our system. He found a couple of other sprinkler heads that had problems and replaced/fixed those for us as well. At no charge. He let me know that I might want to consider putting the larger sprinkler head on a flex hose so we wouldn't have the same problem in the future. A very nice save in my opinion and accidents do happen. We have also used them to do some clipping, trimming and general maintenance around our yard and they have consistently come through. Which is no small feat since Suzie is a Red Raider and having a truck outside our home with a huge Longhorn on it gives her the heebie jeebies... read more

I would never recommend this business. We spent well over $10,000 with them to create an oasis type vibe in our backyard. After two years and some plant replacement by Longhorn nothings alive. It looks terrible and was even protected during the cold weather. The plants they used did not thrive after two years of waiting. They first told us it would take about a year for everything to settle in well that was a bunch of baloney. I sent them a long detailed email and got no response. Save your money don't use them! I didn't end up going with their service for lawn mowing because our lawn was in a desperate state and I just needed to get someone out as fast as possible. However, I still wanted to write a review because I saw that lot of the complaints about this company have been that it's hard to schedule them, and that was not my experience. I used their online quote submission (which worked well, and I liked), and I got an email the next day offering to schedule a time for someone to come view my property and give me a bid on mowing and some additional services I had asked about. So not even 24 hours for them to get back to me seems plenty fast to me...but even at that, the e-mail from the girl explained that their office had been closed the day I contacted them, and that was the only reason she was unable to get back to me same day. So with the limited interaction I had with them I would say they were definitely good enough for me to be interested in their services in the future. The only reason I downgraded them to 4 stars is that they require that someone come view your property before you can have a quote. I don't know if they always do that, or if that was because I asked about things other than just basic mowing, but I can see how that would be a frustrating delay if, like me, your lawn was WAY over due for a mowing. read more

My experience with Longhorn Lawns was NOT good, to say the least. All I wanted to know is what was included in the price quoted to me. If you tell me you're going to charge me $20K to $40K to landscape my yard, then you need to tell me what I will get for that and what I will have to pay for separately. If all your estimate includes is labor and your fee, then all other supplies, stones, plants, hardware, parts and materials are separate charges, then be honest and say so. I'm not going to pay you $500 for a non-refundable landscaping plan only to find out that what you led me to believe would cost $20K to $40K will actually cost me upwards of $75k. If you can't give me an honest answer to a simple question then you are disreputable. This business model is a disgrace, and these smoke and mirror tactics to force a customer into a commitment are disingenuous, manipulative and just plain CROOKED! I do not recommend Kara or Longhorn Lawns to anyone who seeks integrity or honesty up front in what you will actually pay to get your landscaping done. Buyer beware this merchant! read more

Longhorn Lawns deserves this 5-star review. I have hired them for a few different tasks at this point, the last of which has taken over a year and a half with a refund agreed upon just this morning. So why the 5-star review? Short story: I've used other contractors. I've used other lawn services. You'll notice that they're not all rated so favorably. Longhorn Lawns excels not only in their abilities but even moreso in the service Arturo and Julie provide. Long story: I've hired Longhorn Lawns for a couple small jobs over the past couple years, but French drains were my big project. Per Longhorn Lawns' contract, half of the project was paid up-front with the other half set to be paid upon completion. My HOA said they required certain things which required Longhorn Lawns to spend time and money getting permits which would benefit not only my French drains but other projects they take on in the future. So they paid, facilitated communications with the City of Austin and my HOA, and I really had very little legwork to do myself. Time and again, Longhorn Lawns got what was needed for my HOA to agree, they were repeatedly denied the ability to work on my property and given other hoops to jump through. I've tried to be understanding and flexible with this situation since I know how much trouble they've gone through just to get my situation resolved. Longhorn Lawns is not the cheapest lawn service out there, but I also don't think of them as overpriced. I feel as though I have paid a bit more for both quality lawncare and proper customer service, and that's exactly what they have provided. My projects with Longhorn Lawns are far from over. Our HOA has been working with Longhorn Lawns for the last 6 years and they have been great! They show up when they are scheduled and take care of our park and retention ponds. They let us know when we have maintenance that needs to take place on the irrigation system and handle the necessary repairs. They take care of the trees in the park and have made a number of improvements to the landscaping. It's a one stop shop for all of our landscaping needs. A number of owners use them for their personal landscape design, installation and maintenance as well. Heath and his team are awesome! read more

Sorry but I cannot recommend a lawn service that I actually had to fire! They never did a good quality job mowing my yard, always missing areas. I even took pictures and emailed them to show the issues I had. I even had one of their managers come to my house (Kevin?) and talk to him directly. He assured me the crew would do a better job, and the very next time they still did a crappy job! He said he would personally inspect the next time they mowed, but I was there that day and he never showed up. It was so bad that the owner of another lawn service talked to me one day when I was outside, and he said whatever service I was using was so bad, he could do a better job. That is pretty sad when other lawn services are trying to get your business because they see the poor quality of the service you are currently using :( So I got rid of them. Nice girl who is their admin for email and billing, maybe if they let her cut the grass she would do a better job! Heck one of the neighborhood kids could do a better job for less money. They currently serve all the properties in our HOA. None of the owners are happy with the service and quality of work. We have complained twice with an email back from the manager but no improvement. After the second complaint we got no apologies or call from management. Poor customer service! I had to upgrade our package because our lawn looked like jurassic park with weeds and grass out of it. I first called Longhorn Lawns simply to help me whip my yard into shape, as my previous attempts at greening up my lawn failed miserably. Apparently I have the opposite of the Midas touch when it comes to grass. Arturo, their landscape superintendent, came over to give me an estimate on some lawn services, and we started to discuss options on renovating our front flowerbeds. I had no intentions on having some professional landscaping done at the time, but the ideas he had were spot on with what we wanted, and he managed to get it done within our budget. From start to finish my every experience with the folks at Longhorn Lawns was top notch. Arturo was very prompt at submitting their bid, making minor changes to our plan, and then setting up the actual installation. Arturo and Bill came out just a few days later to rip out our flower beds (including three massive lugustroms), planted a bunch of new native plants, and it turned out amazing. They also installed a new stone boarder to our flowerbed, and then put in a xeriscape to replace the small (and dead) strip of grass between our sidewalk and curb. Once they wrapped up, Arturo and Bill took the time to explain proper care for each of the new plants. In just a matter of hours, the guys from Longhorn Lawns were able to transform our fugly front yard into something we can be very proud of. Lawnhorn Lawns worked for me for almost 3 years. We parted ways about 2-3 months ago. Their main problem, for me, was that with every other visit, they sent a new crew. One week, you'd tell a guy that you want him to cut back a bush or whatever, and he says, "I can't do it today. I'll do it next week". Next week comes, and it's a whole new crew and you have to start from scratch. Apparently, they have trouble keeping employees. For 2 years, my wife asked them why we were getting these spots on our Hawthorne bushes. Longhorn said they would check with their "plant person," but they never did. So, yesterday, when my new gardening service guy told me, "I don't know. You should take a branch to the local nursery," that's what we did...and we learned that the spots were a fungus that will, eventually, kill the plants. It seems to me that all Longhorn had to do was say "I don't know," instead of pretending to be experts. That way, the fungus infection would never had gotten as far as it has. Lawnhorn says we were "difficult customers" because we complained. Were we difficult customers? I don't think so. We just wanted what we paid for (i.e. a company to care for our lawn, trees and plants with a minimum of hassle).. read more

I see that some of the reviews here are for the lawn maintenance side of Longhorn, which we don't (yet) have any experience with: we hired longhorn to landscape our back yard from a pile of dirt (new construction) to a xeriscape design done by a family friend. I understand from talking to some of their guys that the design & planting people are different from the maintenance side, for whatever that's worth -- though based on our experience having them do our landscaping, we've also hired them for maintenance. We were not easy customers. We're brand new Texans and we moved here from a city where landscaping is something you see on TV. We didn't know anything about anything but we had this nice design and we were going to be on their case about every part of it even if we couldn't tell mint from marigold. They took it in stride and did a fantastic job. Not only that, but their prices were very reasonable. The workers were out there in the June heat with no complaints. They were polite, gracious, happy to answer questions (even when we distracted them from their jobs) and pretty entertaining to boot! John Paul, the crew boss, came by several times after hours to change out a plant for a better specimen and kept us landscape-ignorant customers informed the whole time. They took their job seriously and we'll gladly go with them again down the road. read more

I have such mixed feelings about these folks. Once they actually got started mowing our lawn, they have done a great job and been exceptionally friendly. It took weeks and weeks to get them to come out for a quote though before they got started - which Julie said was due to the busy season. I thought that was fair, they seem like a small company that's doing their best to keep up with demand. But now I have tried to get them to give us a quote on helping a relative get her yard under control. The response to email was prompt but then I heard nothing - until my relative told me some guys had showed up in the yard unannounced and scared her half to death until she saw the truck out front. Maybe they knocked and she didn't hear it? I don't know why they didn't call ahead, and I have heard nothing since. So I guess the deal is if you can get them to start a job, they're great, but getting to that starting point can be painful. read more

I wanted to give them 5 stars, I really did, but I had one issue that really rubbed me the wrong way. We're getting our house ready to sell, and I needed a company to go out and clean up our front and back yards. They went out and looked at what we had, gave me a quote, and could fit me in the next week. The quote was a little more than I wanted to spend, but they included hauling off all of the debris, and so I decided it was a fair price and agreed to the service. They came out and did a good job, however they filled both our trash bin AND our recycling bin with lawn debris. I was NOT happy about this, since 1) we paid them to haul off ALL of the debris, and 2) I pay for my trash service, and I wasn't about to pay for debris hauling TWICE. (and 3) you don't put lawn clippings in a recycling bin! What the hell!?). I called and asked about it, and Julie checked with them and they did indeed leave the debris in my trash cans. I told her they needed to go back to the house and haul off everything they put in the recycling and trash. Well, I went out later and they emptied the recycling bin, but still left debris in the trash bin, which means I'm still paying twice to have that hauled away. I'm not happy about this. In the future, if they quote someone with hauling off the excess, they should haul off ALL of the excess. The house is getting prepped to sell and we don't need the extra work of cleaning out the trash bins when we're not actively filling them up. I admit the job they did was thorough, and so I give them 4 stars for doing a great job with the lawn. I just wish they'd be more considerate and not leave trash when I'm paying for them to haul it away. read more

I've only been using them for a very short time but Longhorn earned their 5 stars from me this morning. The second time they came to trim my lawn: Me: Be careful, there's a new wasp nest back there. We have the bug guy coming in a week or so. Them: Oh no problem, we spray wasps for free. If I don't have enough spray I'll come back tomorrow. Is this normal or average or something? I have no idea. I've used Longhorn Lawns for about a year now, and I'm very happy with their service. Julie, who runs the office is easy to reach and is always very responsive. She always sends out an email if there will be a schedule change - usually due to rain, or if it's time for a special service. I'm very happy with the yearly maintenance plan, which takes care of the basics like mowing and tidying the beds, but also accounts for things like sprinkler checks, fertilizer, weed maintenance, and tree trimming. The crews are fast, friendly, and they do a great job. Last year I gave them a budget to plant some new flowers in my front beds but no further instructions, and it more than payed off in terms of upgrading our curb appeal. That's really wonderful for me since I don't have an eye for that kind of thing. When I'm ready to do some more serious landscaping, I will not hesitate to work with their team. read more

Very professional, easy to work with, quality job all around. After much reading on Yelp and calling around, I decided to use Longhorn Lawns for a house I was selling. They removed all the old, dead turf, cleaned up the raised garden beds, coordinated a sub to install a sprinkler system, laid down sod, and are currently doing the weekly maintenance until the house sells. Everything went smoothly, and both Julie and Arturo kept things very organized. More expensive than the cheap guys, but this is one area where you get what you pay for. read more

When we built our home we used an expensive landscape design firm here in Austin to help us with our natural landscape yard design needs. They were terrible with recommendations of trees and plants that quickly died a year later. When we looked for another landscape designer, we met Kara and we hired her immediately for her design expertise, She hit the ball out of the park and we NEVER lost another plant or tree again. Her meticulous design plans and her knowledge was vast about what woks best here in the ever changing Austin climate. I had a great experience with this company. I worked with Kara Sanders and BOY does she know her stuff! We needed 5 plantbeds redone and other work around the perimeter of the house. I was stumped about all of it and Kara spent a lot of time asking me questions, making suggestions, and explaining the rationale behind her thoughts. Then she designed and emailed me plans to approve. She had a great crew here for two days - very professional and with a crew supervisor - and she came onsite a couple of times a day as well. She is also so knowledgeable about her field and passionate about the work. We're thrilled with how it all looks. I hired Longhorn Lawns to do some landscaping at my house. I moved in about 2 years ago and had not even touched the lawn. So everything was in bad shape. I was referred to Longhorn Lawns by a good friend who has worked with them before. She had nothing but wonderful things to say about them, so my expectations were high from the get-go. My original call to the Longhorn Lawns office was very different than the the other companies I called to get quotes. The office manager, Julie, actually answered the phone! When I called other companies, I couldn't get anyone on the phone, and it was hard sometimes to even get a call back. Not only did I talk to a real live person, she was very helpful, very knowledgeable, and professional. Arturo, The Landscape Manager, met me at my house, listened to my ideas, and had some of his own. Together we came up with a landscape plan that was going to really work for me (and my doggies). I received the bid by email a few days later and was amazed to see that their prices were very competitive with the other companies I had priced out (the few I could get on the phone). And when comparing the bids side by side, I knew that I was going to get a better product with Longhorn Lawns. I hired them, was able to get my project completed without any issues, and am now enjoying a much more private and relaxing backyard (and a lot of new airline miles...they accept credit cards). After the project completion, I was contacted by the President, Heath, to make sure I was happy with the project. Which I am! I would say that this company is a very young and eager company, with a good business plan. They seem to work together very well (the owner, the irrigation guy, and the office manager are all siblings), and keep quality the main focus of their job. They mean well, but are too busy to care. I've got several examples, my friends that used to use them have even better stories, but here's mine: I had a broken sprinkler head, it was leaking enough to create a 8 foot wide mud-pit in my grass yard - I knew it, but wondered what they'd do about it. The Longhorn Lawn crew mowed over that mud-pit 3 times (!!!) before I called in about having it fixed. After they (or whoever they hired) fixed it (they billed me for the fix, as they should have), they left PVC pipe pieces, rocks, and a hack-saw blade in my yard. No problem, they just forgot to pick up the trash after the job... The Longhorn Lawn crew mowed over the PVC pipe pieces, rocks, and hack-saw blade 2 times (!!!) before I picked up the trash myself. Too busy to care. Too bad, I liked being lazy and having someone else do my yard work. read more

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL! I paid for their "hands off, your lawn will look great 365 days / year service" and my lawn literally DIED on their watch. No one ever came to me and said we need to do anything differently. I had to proactively call them and say "why did my lawn die?" and they had the nerve to blame me for it. My sprinkler system was checked by a professional company only 2 months ago and is working great and on the right settings. Terrible service and feel like they literally stole my money for months. Don't use them under any circumstance. UPDATE: After having my lawn evaluated by a third party, they determined the cause of the damage was a gas leak in whatever mower had been utilized previously. Longhorn lawns is an unbelievable fraud that wouldn't own up to their own mistake and left me holding the bag. Response to comment: When I was told it was time to check our irrigation, I responded saying that we were having new zones put in by the sprinkler company, and it made sense to wait a few weeks until that was complete. I therefore didn't see a reason to have Longhorn come back out to check the system, as it had already been completed by a professional company. I had no idea that if I didn't have them come out too, that Heath would essentially say "your warranty is only valid if we do the check." Their site literally states that my package is a "Year round, hands free, lawn management solution. Your lawn will look great 365 days a year!" Yet when I said we should wait a few weeks on the irrigation check, no one ever came back to me to reschedule. Nor did anyone come back to me saying if I didn't do it, that Longhorn would stop taking responsibility for their program. Nor did anyone ever come to me at all when my lawn started to die. They just sat back and did the bare minimum, i.e. cutting the grass every few weeks, while stealing the extra money ($289/month) I was paying them for services far beyond basic cutting/trimming. On top of everything, Heath was incredibly smug when he discussed with me, essentially throwing over and over in my face that because I didn't have them come out to recheck the sprinkler system that had just been re-checked by another professional company, that they would take no responsibility whatsoever.
