    Valentine's Day items
    Jo Y.

"Make Longs a part of your day!" For us old folks, this jingle has been around for decades, as we remember how the locally owned Longs Drugs has been ingrained in our lives, with nearly the whole community shopping at Longs on a Sunday morning, the start of the weekly ad sales. Things have certainly changed over the years, as the Longs Drugs in HI were acquired by the Mainland corporation, CVS in Oct. 2008 (CVS stands for "Consumer Value Store"). For HI, management chose to retain the name "Longs Drugs" instead of changing its name to "CVS" due to name recognition and geographical separation from other CVS locations on the Mainland. Longs has 68 locations across HI's 4 islands. This review is for the HI Kai Longs, which is located in the HI Kai Shopping Center that was built in 1982 and is anchored by Safeway, McDonalds, and Longs. In addition to having a pharmacy and Minute Clinic, this Longs offer typical merchandise of beauty products, health care items, cooking ingredients, refrigerated items, candies, snacks, liquor, drinks, school supplies, stationery, greeting cards, kitchen ware, household items, Hawaiiana, and seasonal items. It also has a photo department where you can create/offer photo cards, books, gifts, canvas prints, and passport photos. An ATM machine is available inside the store. I'm a regular shopper here, as Longs is conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my home. Things have changed over the years. Since the acquisition by CVS, the following have occurred: * Lesser inventory. While there are still weekly sales, many items are sold out towards the end of the sale; you can get a raincheck with no expiration date, unless the ad stipulates that rainchecks are not to be issued. So, if you really want an item on sale, go early during the sale week. * Customer service has improved. Hiring of additional staff and training of new and existing staff have helped to provide better service to customers, despite the difficulty in finding qualified workers. Staff is now very friendly and go out of their way to help you find what you need. * Pharmacy department has greatly improved. A new Pharmacy Manager was hired in 2022, Daniel Sabin, who previously worked at Longs Aina Haina, has lessened the wait time for customers in picking up their prescriptions. A dedicated Pharmacist, he has made himself available to customers, sharing quality health advice and taking the time to get to know them beyond their names. The pharmacy now offers vaccinations and immunizations. As with other Longs, they close for lunch from 1:30p to 2p daily. They will go out of their way to refill your prescription, even if they do not have it in stock. I recently tried to refill a prescription and was told that all Longs within 20 miles was out of stock of a specific prescription. They called their competitor in HI Kai, Walgreens, who had it in stock and coordinated my pickup from them. * Creation of Minute Clinic. With the pandemic, emphasis of quality health care became important. The Minute Clinic was started in 2022 to provide TB testing, flu shots, sports physicals; and treat common illnesses and injuries. * Open 24 hours daily. What a godsend to know that Longs is open during the wee hours of the morning, just in case if I need something at the last minute! The next closest Longs is in Aina Haina, but it is only open from 7a to 11p daily. * Extra Care rewards. Joining its rewards program, Longs offers discounts on frequent purchases with coupons printed on your receipts. The coupons can be $2 or $5 off a future purchase, 20% off on regular-priced items, discounts on certain brand items, etc. I always look forward in receiving these coupons but have to be mindful of the quick expiration dates. * Self-scanning of purchases. As with other stores and keeping up with technology, 4 self-scanning machines have been installed in the front of the store with an employee to provide guidance to customers. I've used these machines to avoid standing in regular check-out lines when I just have a few items. I've also used this employee for requesting rainchecks, replenishing items on empty shelves, or asking any questions that I have, and my requests have been accommodated without any complaints. Despite all the positive changes, I've noticed increased prices, especially of the healthcare items. Even if they're on sale, it's always buy one and get one free, and many times, I don't need two of them but need only one. For food and household items, sale prices are great discounted prices, even if they are high, as prices have increased accordingly worldwide. Ample parking spaces available in this shopping center's private lot that are shared with other businesses. Glad that we have a Longs Drugs close to my home for much needed medical prescriptions and household items! Yes, "make Longs a part of your day" and it is!

Longs Hawaii Kai is trying hard to work at keeping the lines at the pharmacy and the general check out move quickly as possible. Limiting waiting time for customers is important. Pharmacy help times have greatly improved and seems like they are trying to service customers right away. The self check out at the front is also one of the main reasons why I shop there.

Super easy to find this location with Yelp directions. Seems hubs caught a bad cold and ran out of Mucinex this morning so I got out of the car to get him a new box, a huge bottle of Menehune water and Ricola to suck on. Little did we know that it was in the same area of an elite event we were heading to. When I entered there the store was a line waiting to pay but by the time I found what I was looking for I was next. Must be one of the managers was helping ring up and my $20 reward showed up so it was even better.

They sell Dave's Ice Cream.....got da Ube flavor!

Yeah, Longs Drugs is not a local company, but they have been around in the islands for so long that they've become a fabric of the Hawaiian community! As a kid, I remembered my parents taking me to a Longs Drugs all the time............and I also remembered going to Longs Drugs especially when we had to pick up school supplies for the new school year. Every Longs Drugs in the island carries more or less the same type of things, but the Hawaii Kai Longs Drugs is very special to me....... Why???? Okay gang, I'm gonna let da cat out of da bag now............ The Hawaii Kai Longs Drugs, located in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Cener is very special to me because this particular Longs Drugs Store carries - "Dave's Ice Cream"! As good as that sounds, that's not all gang..............here's the kicker............a lot of the times this Longs Drugs sells Dave's Ice Cream at a bargain price! Yesterday when I walked into Longs, I was able to get (2) pints of Dave's Ice Cream for $5.00 bucks! Can we say DEALAGES Yo!!!! But I gotta tell you folks............sometimes when I come here, if I catch it right............ I sometimes come across da ULTIMATE DEALAGES! What's the deal? The Ultimate Deal is (2) pints of Dave's Ice Cream for just $4.00 bucks!!!! Aside from the ice cream thing...........everything else is pretty much the same as any other Longs Drugs that I would go to. If you're ever in the Hawaii Kai area, stop by and check out this recently renovated store.........it looks updated, and the spacing of the store feels so much roomier, then the previous store design. Don't forget to check out their Sunday ad.............and make Long's a part of your day! Lol!

Floor staff is rude, don't make eye contact. Treated poorly because we aren't local, apparently.

Headed here to get my mini tote for using their mobile app. Yup, sure enough, there was a long line…read more- with a staff member encouraging those who wanted to skip the line to use the app and get a bag. She kindly helped every interested customer learn to use the app and skip the line! Spacious area, cool a/c, lots of stock, easy browsing. I did use the app, but also went back into line because there are a few things without upc codes, such as my hot char siu bao! So for those items, sorry, you'll need to stay in line;)! There are upc codes to scan for things like coffee, though, so check it out when you're in a rush! Oh, and because there's Boston Pizza, a Hele gas and e charging station, there's more parking than at a usual 7-11. Did I mention you also earn rewards? Like discounts and free Slurpees? Yup, so Go get 'em!

Multiple choices to choose from. Different prices, but generally inexpensive. I'm talking about $2!! LOVE the different flavored slushies!! Can't find these Hawaiian flavors in CA. Don't feel like eating spam musubi? Multiple other food choices located in the refrigerator section. Prices also inexpensive. I'm talking about $5-6!! Several free parking spots in front of the store vs free street parking. HATE that I didn't earn any points on any of my purchases. None of the employees knew what I was talking about. I guess 7-11 Hawaii doesn't have the app or 7REWARDS which is SO SUCKY because I bought so much stuff here during my stay in Hawaii!!

Not sure if this shop is "Waialae Mini Mart" or "Mini Mart" , I walked over to meet with my friends…read morefor dinner and happen to be early, reason to make a stop here. I love convenience stores for just one thing- alcoholic beverages and also to see what other goods I can find. The shop is located on 12th Ave/Waialae, look for the bright yellow sign across of Duk Ke/Via Gelato. Tiny little mini mart with just 2 aisle with neatly filled products. The lady owner was very nice and her doggie was so cute! I enjoyed browsing both aisle looking and observing the products. I love the Pringle selections, some new flavors I haven't seen/tried before, ( dill pickle, seven layer dip, & all dressed up) There a nice selection of alcoholic beverages and wine. There all lots of can food, snacks, candies, seeds, ramen, paper goods, cleaning supplies, a tiny freezer near the door for some frozen products and many more. For a mini convenience mart store, the price isn't bad, reasonable. I love that they price the merchandise. What I ended up getting was 2 cans of Waterloo brand ginger twist ( $1.39 ?) I never seen them in ginger flavor, 2 cans of High Noon peach tea ( $2.39) ghost pepper chicken noodle soup (3.99) & the last Mina brand wild caught sardine in olive oil ( $2.99) Those items caught my eyes since I've never seen those ever. My total was fifteen dollars and some change, paid via credit card. A plastic bag was provided- don't think she charged for it. Overall, what a quick and convenient store! I actually enjoyed myself looking around and I would definitely come visit again. I love mom & pop shops that carry the goods, good stuff!
