Ever since the other PROPERTY, Candy or Sandy or whatever her name was left, the staff seems happier, more efficient, and definitely more of a team and the manager. Daniel seems to have completely turned the whole thing around for the best. It's been several years now, and I no longer have to drive to another pharmacy send my local one is most likely the best on the island. They take the time to make things work when there's hiccups, they treat everyone like they know them personally, and they're outright incredibly friendly. I feel lucky to live so close to such a unique pharmacy! The store is itself is usually run quite efficiently as well with one of my favorite employees always waving with a happy quick little tilt to his head. He's incredibly friendly in a way I've never seen before. The store is lucky to have him and forgive me for not remembering his name, but he always waves and smiles and slightly tilts his head with every single customer. We were in the area and stopped by to see if we needed to pick up anything. It's your typical Longs. The store was big and clean. I found my usual favorites, usually snacks. The pharmacy is all the way in the back of the store. I found some sale items that I purchased. I got some spaghetti sauce and ready to eat clam chowder. What I like most about Longs is that they carry a lot of local items. They have a lot of local snacks and souvenirs. You can get some great deals if you catch it on sale. They have a rewards program. I love the staff at this Longs Drugs! So much that i will drive here out of my neighborhood because Service is everything! For example, manager Haunani spent over 90 minutes helping print photos from my Android Google Pixel phone. Originally i had sent 20 photos thru my phone carriers promotion to CVS. They did not come out correctly so Haunani saved the day! She fixed them by helping me step by step as i am very digitally challenged! She is very , nice friendly and peteonable!. She patiently helped me get through all my 65 prints! I wasnt going to stay so long but she was so undrstanding that i decided to print as many as i could while she is there! Sonja please recognize Haunani for her Excellent Customer Service,! She is a Genius at the Photo Center! Also, a SHOUT OUT to the Pharmacy Manager Daniel! For us old folks, this jingle has been around for decades, as we remember how the locally owned Longs Drugs has been ingrained in our lives, with nearly the whole community shopping at Longs on a Sunday morning, the start of the weekly ad sales. Things have certainly changed over the years, as the Longs Drugs in HI were acquired by the Mainland corporation, CVS in Oct. 2008 (CVS stands for "Consumer Value Store"). For HI, management chose to retain the name "Longs Drugs" instead of changing its name to "CVS" due to name recognition and geographical separation from other CVS locations on the Mainland. Longs has 68 locations across HI's 4 islands. This review is for the HI Kai Longs, which is located in the HI Kai Shopping Center that was built in 1982 and is anchored by Safeway, McDonalds, and Longs. In addition to having a pharmacy and Minute Clinic, this Longs offer typical merchandise of beauty products, health care items, cooking ingredients, refrigerated items, candies, snacks, liquor, drinks, school supplies, stationery, greeting cards, kitchen ware, household items, Hawaiiana, and seasonal items. It also has a photo department where you can create/offer photo cards, books, gifts, canvas prints, and passport photos. An ATM machine is available inside the store. I'm a regular shopper here, as Longs is conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my home. Things have changed over the years. Since the acquisition by CVS, the following have occurred: * Lesser inventory. While there are still weekly sales, many items are sold out towards the end of the sale; you can get a raincheck with no expiration date, unless the ad stipulates that rainchecks are not to be issued. So, if you really want an item on sale, go early during the sale week. * Customer service has improved. Hiring of additional staff and training of new and existing staff have helped to provide better service to customers, despite the difficulty in finding qualified workers. Staff is now very friendly and go out of their way to help you find what you need. * Pharmacy department has greatly improved. A new Pharmacy Manager was hired in 2022, Daniel Sabin, who previously worked at Longs Aina Haina, has lessened the wait time for customers in picking up their prescriptions. A dedicated Pharmacist, he has made himself available to customers, sharing quality health advice and taking the time to get to know them beyond their names. The pharmacy now offers vaccinations and immunizations. As with other Longs, they close for lunch from 1:30p to 2p daily. They will go out of their way to refill your prescription, even if they do not have it in stock. I recently tried to refill a prescription and was told that all Longs within 20 miles was out of stock of a specific prescription. They called their competitor in HI Kai, Walgreens, who had it in stock and coordinated my pickup from them. * Creation of Minute Clinic. With the pandemic, emphasis of quality health care became important. The Minute Clinic was started in 2022 to provide TB testing, flu shots, sports physicals; and treat common illnesses and injuries. * Open 24 hours daily. What a godsend to know that Longs is open during the wee hours of the morning, just in case if I need something at the last minute! The next closest Longs is in Aina Haina, but it is only open from 7a to 11p daily. * Extra Care rewards. Joining its rewards program, Longs offers discounts on frequent purchases with coupons printed on your receipts. The coupons can be $2 or $5 off a future purchase, 20% off on regular-priced items, discounts on certain brand items, etc. I always look forward in receiving these coupons but have to be mindful of the quick expiration dates. * Self-scanning of purchases. As with other stores and keeping up with technology, 4 self-scanning machines have been installed in the front of the store with an employee to provide guidance to customers. I've used these machines to avoid standing in regular check-out lines when I just have a few items. I've also used this employee for requesting rainchecks, replenishing items on empty shelves, or asking any questions that I have, and my requests have been accommodated without any complaints. Despite all the positive changes, I've noticed increased prices, especially of the healthcare items. Even if they're on sale, it's always buy one and get one free, and many times, I don't need two of them but need only one. For food and household items, sale prices are great discounted prices, even if they are high, as prices have increased accordingly worldwide. Ample parking spaces available in this shopping center's private lot that are shared with other businesses. Longs Hawaii Kai is trying hard to work at keeping the lines at the pharmacy and the general check out move quickly as possible. Limiting waiting time for customers is important. Pharmacy help times have greatly improved and seems like they are trying to service customers right away. The self check out at the front is also one of the main reasons why I shop there. read more

Seems hubs caught a bad cold and ran out of Mucinex this morning so I got out of the car to get him a new box, a huge bottle of Menehune water and Ricola to suck on. Little did we know that it was in the same area of an elite event we were heading to. The Hawaii Kai Longs Drugs, located in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Cener is very special to me because this particular Longs Drugs Store carries - "Dave's Ice Cream"! As good as that sounds, that's not all gang..............here's the kicker............a lot of the times this Longs Drugs sells Dave's Ice Cream at a bargain price! Yesterday when I walked into Longs, I was able to get (2) pints of Dave's Ice Cream for $5.00 bucks! Can we say DEALAGES Yo!!!! But I gotta tell you folks............sometimes when I come here, if I catch it right............ I sometimes come across da ULTIMATE DEALAGES! What's the deal? The Ultimate Deal is (2) pints of Dave's Ice Cream for just $4.00 bucks!!!! Longs really is my go to place for prescriptions and anything really medicine related. I'm not one of those who check the Longs ad every week to check what is on sale. I just go if I need something last minute or to pick up medicine or a prescription. On my last visit my husband brought his watch because they do battery changes there. There was no one at the photo counter so we went to a cashier and he called the floor manager over the intercom. He came fairly quickly and serviced my husband right away. That was fine. Then as we were going another cashier comes up to the floor manager and says that he needs help with a customer, who he brought over to the photo section. The cashier explained the situation that the man was paying for his things and wanted so cash back but he didn't receive the cash back. Instead of the manager trying to rectify the situation, he told the customer that he was in the middle of doing something and that he couldn't help him. Now you see, he was done with us, so I'm not sure why he was so rude to the customer. The man said he would buy something else to get his cash back but the manager just kind of dismissed him because he was "too busy". The customer ended up leaving or trying another cashier. I just thought the whole situation was unnecessary. He really could have helped the customer. And even if he was busy, he could have told him in a nicer way. I went this evening to purchase an item that was in their sale ad but couldn't find it on the floor. They had three young guys standing at the table near the self checkout area - two wearing dark colored t-shirts and one wearing a store collared shirt. I asked the guy in the collared shirt for help and he said it was out of stock. So I asked if he could check the stock at the Aina Haina store and he said sure and proceeded to call. One of the guys in the t-shirts with a middle comb and long bangs overheard and told me they "can't" call for me. Confused, I asked if Aina Haina said it wasn't in stock. He tells me they can't call because it would be the same as if I called myself. Whaaat?! That makes no sense! The guy who was helping me hears this and hangs up before he speaks to anyone at Aina Haina. What kind of stupid policy is that? I didn't have my phone so I had to drive to Aina Haina to check the stock myself. That guy made it sound like it was it was store policy so I called them when I got home and was told it's not store policy to refuse to check stock at a nearby store for a customer. And no, they were not busy at all so that's not the reason they "couldn't" call. Management at the Hawaii Kai store needs to explain to their younger employees the meaning of customer service. read more

Put it simply, cashiers, particularly the one that I just experienced was so incompetent. Tried to buy waste at their discount price, but forgot to bring my CVS card, so I had to make a second trip to complete the purchase. PHARMACY IS AWFUL!!! GO TO WALGREENS INSTEAD. The Longs pharmacy staff is horrible. This happened to me THREE TIMES this week. They told me 25 mins wait for my prescription. After 25 mins, I went up and they said 20 more mins. After 20 more mins, they paged me that it was ready. When I went up, they told me 10-15 more minutes. Finally, I told them I was not leaving the counter since they had told me that it was ready and I'd already been waiting 45 minutes. They literally go, "Oh it is ready." It had been sitting in the basket THE WHOLE TIME. Please go to Walgreens instead. The staff here is completely incompetent. Their hiring process seems extremely poor. I asked her to connect me to the actual store and she couldn't. She wanted the phone number and location of the store I wanted to be in contact with. This is my go to Longs. I'm always confident I will find what I need with excellent customer service. Located in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center, it is very easy to get to, and there is ample amount of parking. I've been coming to this Longs for a very long time, and the customer service is a lot better compared to previous years. The staff both at the Pharmacy and store are very friendly and helpful. Even though the customer service is good, there isn't enough employees to give you the friendly service! There are instances where it's difficult to find someone to assist you, and oftentimes, it only has two cashier lines open on opposite ends and it takes a while for another employee to open up additional registers when the lines get long and blocking the aisles. It feels like after Longs went 24/7, it never added additional employees, but rather spread them out evenly to cover the graveyard shift. The CVS card is great with all the coupons and additional savings and rewards, especially when you add in manufacturer's coupons as well, but several of the cashiers always seem unsure of themselves when I bust out the coupons. They need to take a close look at the coupon, and then check the right item is there. JUST SCAN IT! Don't need to think too much. I wouldn't be using it if it wouldn't work, right? Overall, this Longs is one of the better ones. The set up of the aisles is uniform and simple to navigate. Every item is almost always in stock, and if not, you can easily get a raincheck. The staff here is friendly and helpful, but there isn't enough to service the amount of customers that come through. read more

Longs, you are a life saver! Not only are you open 24 hours but you have everything from Cold Eeze to frozen lumpia to roach traps to leis! Every time I go into a store and see a cooler with boxes of leis, I think, who's gonna buy that? Me, at 10:30 at night it turns out - after daughter tells me she needs one for school the next day for a guest speaker. So what if I end up buying the latest Doritos novelty snack? Or the dark chocolate peppermint squares that Ghirardelli only sells during the holidays? Totally worth not driving all over the place to find a lei in the middle of the night! Growing up in Hawaii Kai, I've been patronizing this store for 20+ years. To be completely honest, I really miss the old Longs Drugs. Since CVS took over, I've noticed that prices are significantly higher across the board, the customer service is not as friendly/helpful and they are often short staffed. Recently, I went in to print photos and no one was staffing the photo center. I had to flag down a worker overseeing the self checkout to pick up my prints. When I inquired about online orders and pricing, she was rude, abrupt and unhelpful. After this experience, I decided to take my business elsewhere. read more

CVS ruined a good organization! What do you get is endless coupons with contradictory vague terms and even if you get past that, a manager needs to get involved half the time. What happened to running simple sales that people can easily take advantage of? More minor - store is in need of a physical facelift. Interior is just dingy and the product organization is poor. Like who would think that school supplies can be found in the Pest Control aisle? With lack of shopping options in Hawaii Kai, this store will continue to get business. The Longs Drugs STORE itself is great. Absolutely love how friendly the staff is & more than willing to help when you can't find something. On more than one occasion, they've gone into the back to check if they still had an item and would willingly write me a raincheck if it wasn't in stock. Their sales are also great! Have good deals on common goods/foods. Longs Hawaii Kai is always my go-to for sales and last minute things I need. However, their sale items are always "while supplies last," and if you don't go on the first couple of days of the sale, they're probably out of all the sale stuff. Finally, the PHARMACY is absolutely TERRIBLE. The pharmacy techs are very nice & I honestly feel bad for them. They seem overworked with not enough help & always seem to be apologizing cause just about everything else about the pharmacy SUCKS. There's always a long wait, prescriptions never seem to be ready (despite getting a call saying "your prescription at longs hawaii kai is ready for pick-up"), and they always have a difficult time finding your prescription.
