We had been here decades ago so we knew we needed to revisit while in the area since this is one of the best gardens in the country. Not a cheap place at over $30 for most admissions even with some minor discounts. Since we didn't know our exact schedule we took a chance and did not buy a timed admission in advance even though they recommend it. It was going to be another super steamy day for late May so we arrived a bit after they opened at 10am. Everyone else had the same idea. Luckily we were able to buy a ticket on the spot without waiting on line since we used one of the kiosks. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There were tons of grade school groups that were running through most exhibits - it appeared their favorite was getting wet from the fountain show's spray![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is huge with lots of walking but there is enough shade to keep out of the 90 + degree heat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All of the volunteers were super friendly and helpful. Eager to answer all questions and give directions. We covered a lot of ground in three hours and saw all the highlights including two of the fountain shows, the conservatory, the bonsai exhibit, the Italian water garden and the house. A Peaceful Day Among Blooms, Bonsai, and Beautiful Fountain Shows at Longwood Gardens I had such a wonderful experience at Longwood Gardens. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The grounds are absolutely beautiful--you can easily spend hours exploring and still not see everything.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's incredibly peaceful, with plenty of shaded areas and chairs scattered throughout, making it easy to slow down, relax, and take it all in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was especially happy that the tulips were still blooming during my visit--they were vibrant, colorful, and truly a highlight of the day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] One thing that really stood out was how many staff members were around. A membership is only $120, and if I lived closer, I would absolutely take advantage of that and visit often. Parking was plentiful and easy. The café had a great variety of options--from hot entrées to sandwiches and salads--and I even found a great deal: a hot dog and chips for just $7. The garden also has ponds, pools, and a water fountains / light show in the evening. There is the original DuPont house for touring. Wife and I went to Longwood Gardens and decided to try the new 1906 restaurant. Longwood Christmas is always extremely magical and well put together! Tickets are required this time of year and could be extra for some memberships. No matter the weather, it can be pretty busy! I Beg Your Garden 1,100-acre public gardens that's considered one of the "premier" horticulture display gardens in the US. It's been open to the public since 1921 thanks to the DuPont family, and welcomes in a whopping 1.6-million(!) visitors annually. The were also recently named "Best Botanical Garden in the US" by USA Today®** reader's poll. The Good: *Despite the popularity, this place never felt crowded because it's so massive. *Be sure to catch one of the water fountain shows, complete with music. *Open year-round *Lots of events so check the calendar before you visit. *Holiday light displays, if you're lucky enough to visit during that time of year. *Lots of indoor gardens, so even on an especially cold or hot day this wouldn't be a bad idea to visit. Longwood gardens is a must for nature enthusiasts. You'll easily hit 10,000 steps in a visit walking to all six districts . The greenhouse themes went from jungle to desert. One of the star attractions is the main fountain garden. Also worth noting, the well curated bonsai collection. The open meadows and paths through the woods are beautiful, especially in the Fall as you can see the changing leaves. The cafeteria has a variety of foods from soups, sandwiches, salads, even adult beverages. There is also a beer garden on the premises, where live performances take place. Hubby accompanied me to A Longwood Christmas. We started with lunch at 1906. We chose the 3-course pre-fixe lunch option. The food and service never disappoint, even though our favorite person, long-time employee Natalie, wasn't working. John did a superb job for a wonderful dining experience. My first day visiting A Longwood Christmas exhibit in January, the last week of the exhibit. I must say Longwood was definitely not as crowded, and I felt like I had time to stop and enjoy all the floral delights and ask questions like how the plants are watered. There are underground hoses in every section, supplying room-temperature water. Even my husband had questions, like about the new conservatory: why are some windows on the roof open? We learned there is an automated system tied to the weather for internal climate control. The displays were still amazing and lovely, even with a few days before closing. And all those poinsettias that are grown just for the exhibit get mulched. read more

Longwood was *stunning* this year. We weren't able to get tickets the last few years so seeing all the new installments made the even more fabulously festive. It had snowed heavily the day before but everything at longwood was shoveled and salted. Everything looked so beautiful covered in snow, it truly was a winter wonderland! I was a little disappointed that the tree house was closed, but I knew longwood did it out of an abundance of caution since the steps looked extra icy. Parking lots were shoveled as well. There were little drink stations on the route where you could get beer, wine, or hot chocolate. I got the Bailey's hot chocolate and it was FABULOUS. So creamy and chocolate. Not very heavy on the Irish cream part but it was so perfect for the weather. It kept me toasty on the inside until we got to the cafe. I got the citrus glazed salmon entree that came with seasonal veggies and mashed potatoes. I wanted to get the leek and potato soup but they were all out. I bought a festive wintery hard cider which was refreshing and My husband stood in line for 10 min to get me a peppermint spiked hot chocolate that was the icing on the cake! All the exhibits were fabulous, it truly is something you have to see to experience it. I cannot recommend it enough!! read more

I cannot believe this was my first time at Longwood Gardens! This place is a magical escape into the gardens and the forest. Wanting to move our ticket time an hour later, we called the gardens first thing at 10 am, and did have to wait on hold for some time before getting help. I imagine many people run into the same issue as we did. However, we were able to change our ticket time with the $8 fee, though this was worth it for our schedule. We came in the late afternoon to be able to see some of the gardens in the light and also stay until after sunset to see the Christmas light decor. While all of the gardens were wonderful to walk through, the Forest Walk was especially magical at night. It was lit beautifully, and the lights syncing with the music was mesmerizing. I definitely recommend visiting Longwood Gardens and I cannot wait to come back in the spring for a new season of blooming! read more

I went to Longwood Gardens on Monday afternoon (bought tickets the same day) and had such a lovely day! They still have their Autumn's Colors installation until the 16th, so it was nice to see that. In previous visits, I've always gone during the holidays. In addition to the various floral displays, there were some kid friendly areas. We were there with a group and the kids loved the tree houses. The gift shop was also great, they had a nice selection of ornaments, home decor, stationary, and other items. It's hard to put into words just how pleasant walking through Longwood Gardens is. Longwood Gardens has everything: so many varieties of trees, flowers, and vegetable plants, plus beautiful fountains and walking paths. The fountain show was a fun surprise. Be careful where you stand for this! Getting soaked did turn out to be perfect on a hot day, though. Speaking of, it's best to time your visit during the cooler parts of the year. The conservatory areas are a bit cooler than the fully outdoor areas but if it's hot, the main limiter to covering the full gardens will be the heat. Also, food from outside isn't allowed. Well, really, food that's in plain view of staff at the entrance isn't allowed... 4 hours was enough to watch a fountain show, see the Main Fountain Garden District, and see the Conservatory District. The Idea Garden in the Main Fountain District is an interesting mix of vegetable plants, fruit plants, herb plants, flowers, and more. We were lucky to get an unofficial tour of parts of the Idea Garden from a very passionate staff member who shared interesting facts about the plant varieties. The Conservatory District is absolutely beautiful, and I particularly loved the Waterlily Court. Despite the fact that it's a well known tourist site, it was a peaceful and beautiful experience to the point where I didn't want to leave. I'll start by confessing that I'm not a nature girl. I'd rather walk down Madison Avenue than through the woods. With that said, I was blown away by my initial visit to Longwood Gardens. A preponderous of four and five-star reviews can't be wrong. Besides various gardens, greenhouses and trails, you can enter Pierre DuPont's home. (He took over the property to save majestic trees from being cut down for lumber.) I plan on coming back in the fall, and likely next winter. Exhibits and plantings change seasonally. If you visit in the summer: -- know that it gets hot. Dress lightly. Hydrate. -- don't forget sunscreen. And a hat! Okay, sunglasses too. -- there's a lot of ground to cover. Wear comfy shoes. -- they recommend purchasing tickets on line. Tickets are timed, and once a slot fills, that's it. I've been to Longwood Gardens a handful of times in the past decade but there was always something under construction. I went this week and it felt so complete, I think all the projects they had underway have been completed. The bonsai garden outside is incredible, they have bonsais that are over a hundred years old. There's also an opportunity to see a part of Dupont's home. The foyer will transport you to a garden in Cuba, then there is a ten minute documentary and a museum that follows. The conservatory district is really cool and offers thousands of species of flowers to look at. The bio wall in front of the restrooms are incredible and luscious. The orchid room is like walking into a Nordstrom perfume section during the holidays. The Main Fountain Garden will make you feel like you are in Versailles. Longwood stopped being about gardens and the outdoors some years ago. Management is more interested in maximizing revenues than in providing the original duPont experience (as updated where necessary). Longwood has gotten greedy. And you feel it there now. Everything that is good about Longwood (other than the updated fountains, which plumbing necessitated) has been there for two, three decades or more. The newest elements have one thing in common -- the rock concerts, the boring new gardens, the upscale restaurant, the closings for "events" -- they are fundraisers. Longwood Gardens is just a spectacular place with a plethora or plants and flowers! All of the staff members were very pleasant and Disney-esque! Wear comfortable clothing and good walking shoes as the exhibits are a nice stroll away. The earlier fountain show was very entertaining and lasted about 3 songs. The song selections were happy tunes from Earth, Wind and Fire & Kool and The Gang, and then ended with a bluesy upbeat song. After strolling around this majestic place, we decided to visit the Cafe. We were bracing to be wowed by the looks of the rest of the estate. However, this was the biggest disappointment of our time there. The food is prepackaged and very unappealing. It gave school lunch/quickchek vibes without any visible cooking or grilling happening. There were fries and chicken tenders that seemed to be fresh in the warmer so we decided to go with the safest bet. Hard, overly-breaded and lukewarm chicken tenders and lukewarm fries. Both lacked any flavor. What a true disappointment and waste of money, and mostly my appetite. This food was not cheap and I've had better chicken tenders at the movies, so I definitely felt robbed. One thing I must say is that the place was immaculate. Their staff was very attentive and pleasant and kept the place spotless. We met a sweet lady named Engracia whose name literally translates to In Grace.. I figured I could shift my lens a bit from the food. We noticed a manager nearby and we shared our experience with her and although she brought the chef out to speak with us, the damage was done. He explained that the chicken and fries come frozen and they are not prepared onsite. They tried to offer dessert but we want to continue exploring the grounds. After visiting the remainder of the exhibits, we ended the night with a spectacular Latino music themed lighted fountain show. This was truly an experience! We loved every moment of the show. There were a lot of employees (or volunteers?) to direct people in the gardens. I liked the new conservatory. After walking around, I had to eat lunch at the cafe. I picked out the best looking items- a shrimp salad and a fruit tart. They were excellent, especially the fruit tart. They had a wide range of choices, from fried chicken tenders to salad. All of the employees must have taken a class on employee friendly behavior and/or must be very happy to work there. In some gardens I felt like I was back in Belize. Longwood Gardens is must see during the holidays with 1000 acres of manicured lawns, water fountains, gardens, arboretums, two conservatories, flowers, bonsai garden, Christmas trees, lights, decorations, music, a pump museum and gift shop. Be prepared to spend a few hours because there's so much splendor to see and experience. This place creates the feeling of childhood wonderment every time I visit. A beautiful and well maintained garden where you can easily spend the whole day. They offer different programs for spring, summer, fall, and winter, and my favorite time to visit is during spring or fall. There's a recently renovated restaurant called 1906 if you got extra budget because it's definitely on a higher end. read more

Visited the gardens in October. While some of the garden beds and water features in the Italian section were not available, there is still plenty to do outdoors. Tree houses, model railroad, other outdoor gardens, and a cafeteria style food court. The conservatory indoors are well kept and lots to see! Check out the bathrooms in the green wall. Since we first came to Longwood for their Valentine's Day event in 2021 and we became members soon after. We've been coming to Christmas displays, special light exhibits, spring and summer displays, and really anytime we have an afternoon to spend wandering outside. We've come and had food at the newer beer garden which continues to expand. We enjoy 1906 which is their fine dinning restaurant. The new space in the conservatory is as beautiful as the precious space. It's a wonderful and whimsical experience every time. We hope to continue coming throughout the seasons as there's always something new blooming. The water lily garden will return this summer and we've missed it while the glass palace was under construction. Make sure to talk to the staff, who are always helpful and knowledgeable, to find out what the major draws are currently and upcoming. read more

I bought tickets and tried to reschedule, the link on their website to move the dates was not working so I decided to call except I was on hold for AGES!!! When they finally picked up, the workers were so rude and claimed they "couldn't hear me" but my phone was working perfectly fine on my call minutes before I reached out to them... They ended up hanging up on me and I had to call again just to be on hold for another 40 minutes before someone answered just to hang up on me AGAIN! Now I'm out of $78 and never even got to go... Maybe fix your phones, website, as well as your attitudes?? read more

What a lovely day trip. Plenty of restrooms throughout the gardens. They have main fountain shows at multiple times throughout the day. I half expected dinosaurs to come out of the conservatory jungle. Beautiful surprises throughout the gardens. Very well kept, clean, and calming but still family friendly. I would love to come back. The cafe and Beer Garden offers multiple dining options. There's also a more expensive and classy restaurant. The gift shop sells plants and has fair to higher range prices on souvenirs, journals, and books. Friendly staff throughout the park. read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The fabulous display of plants and Christmas decor, the plants, and specially the orchids here were so so beautiful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I am a plant parent and I loved seeing lush green plants so well they were maintained.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place was so big and spick n span.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love the chandeliers made of flowers and trees.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We went closer to the new year, so it was really really cold and windy, but even then there was ample to see indoors in the greenhouse which was temperature controlled and we were all comfortable even with three month old baby to two explore.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We also died at the cafe 1906 and loved the starters. Main course. Could use a little bit more flavours and we did not know that it's only a very limited menu that is available. If you don't have a main dining room reservation, I hope next time we will plan better and get a reservation before. Then in the evening, when the lights were on, it looked much more magical with the Train display and also the caramel hot chocolate was so good in the cold. It was overall a very good experience. We spent a good time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was also a nursing room for breastfeeding moms, which was a plus.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Everything was very clean, Well maintained,staff was very good.
