I have been searching for a place such as this all my married life. The food is delicious and so comfort food worthy! My guy had the cheeseburger whilst I had the Welsh Rarebit and the Brussel sprouts, which were supposed to be small plates...but holy moly! I haven't had that tasty of a rarebit since the olde Yorktown Tavern ceased to exist. Very local but obviously very loved as you do need reservations. There is a cute outside patio but we ate at the bar with the seasoned veterans. Our waitress had the right amount of spice to add to this dining adventure. Best item was Fish and Chips - nice and crispy, not oily, and the mushy peas were very nice but could benefit from additional mint. Underwhelmed by the rest of meal. Ambience was overall pleasant but customers dressed across the spectrum. This restaurant is SO FUN!!! A true and unique experience with a beautiful drive in rural PA! I booked this dinner for a work dinner and we really had a great time - one thing to note is they only serve beer and cider so if you want your own spirits or wine bring your own! Being of Welsh stock I can confirm, the cuisine is accurate and tastes pretty great. Batter on the fish was rich and the shepherds pie was delicious. If you sit outside you can enjoy a creek behind the tavern, area was quiet and there is no annoying music to be found. A nice experience read more

My daughter and son-in-law wanted to take the Moms to the Whip Tavern for Mother's Day. They made reservations for 5, and the options were 4:30 or 8:30 on Saturday, so we went with 4:30. It is a tiny building but they are doing it right! There is complimentary valet parking which was great because I have no idea where we would have parked. We were seated at exactly 4:30, and our server was friendly and fast. RJ and I ordered Downeast Peach Mango Cider which was refreshing and delicious. We started with crab and artichoke dip and beef and weck eggrolls, and our table ordered 2 fish and chips, the "Luxury" seafood pie, shepherd's pie, and the beef on weck sandwich. My weck included onions, mushrooms, swiss, and bacon with a side of au jus and horseradish. Yum, what a salty, savory, spicy combo. The roast beef was very tender and juicy. The fish and chips were all enjoyed, as were both pies. We did not make it to dessert but will try that again another time. We were in and out in about 1 hour without being rushed at all. Ambiance of the English Pub theme was decent. Menu choices were plentiful. So Food review: Had wings for an appetizer. Asked to have them cooked crispy. They came out rubbery and undercooked - took most home. The maple lager coffee sauce was flavorless. Probably the worst wings I've ever had. Fish & chips were fair- the mushy peas were pretty good. Chopped salad was a nice size and was filled with toppings. Sticky toffee pudding was the best thing we ordered. Now for service: Server was friendly and helpful with questions we had. But the pace of the staff is like watching paint dry. I'm sorry folks - a lot of walking around looking busy but at a slow pace and the food was really slow to arrive. We are always in the hunt for a GOOD fish and chips. The Whip sells itself as a pub from across the pond, and they get good review for it so we though we would give it a go on a weekday evening. I didn't think to make a reservation until last minute and had my choice of 5 or 645, and only on the patio as inside appeared to be booked solid. I had my reservations (literal and figurative) but went with it anyway as I was looking forward to a drive in the country. Indeed the Whip is located in the middle of nowhere and it's packed because anywhere else would be a schlep away. Parking is minimal and resulted in people double parking and blocking others in. My better half went in first to see if we could be seated (we were early) but the bartender ignored him in favor of the cool guys at the bar. She turned and walked away until he leaned in and gave her the look of "my money is as green as theirs." We were seated on the patio. I was happy we did as the inside is kind of dark and could use a good scrub. The weather was great but we were not ready when the waitress was so then it took forever for her to come back and take our order. We ordered appetizers and our meal at the same time (Welsh rarebit, the pork belly special, and the salmon cake). Welsh rarebit was quite good and the salmon cake ok (nice sauce and a bit of asparagus). The pork belly was disappointing. One of the four pieces was all fat and the pineapple with it , although not canned was not fresh. For entrees two of us ordered the fish and chips and one of us got the burger. Portions were big enough but these came out before we had gotten close to finishing our appetizers. Fish was not super fresh but passable and was fried in a turmeric or maybe curry flavored dredge. Plenty of fries came with both entrees. The burger was good. We shared the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. This came out again very fast with lots of caramel sauce and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream for an additional $2. Service was perfunctory at best, rude at the worst. They have the corner on the market and they know it. After reading the website more closely (it reads like your middle school rules of the classroom) you would think twice about going here because they have forgotten about the hospitality part of the business. Don't expect to be allowed to stay more than 75 minutes at your table. 2 stars for the hospitality 4 stars for the food. read more

They were insanely busy by 11:30 am on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but we were able to squeeze in at the bar and were glad we did! A very homey place, more spacious than it looks on the outside and clearly a popular local haunt with lots of families. Great service too, especially given how busy they were. Shoutout to the woman bartending in particular--she was doing so much and doing it well! Very solid food options along the British theme. I enjoyed a scotch egg and their very hearty special beef stew. My boyfriend had the fish and chips, which were hefty! I won't say it was mindblowing fare, but sometimes you need classics done well, and The Whip fits the bill. We hope to return soon! read more

After waiting years to visit the Whip, we finally went when I discovered that they now take reservations. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the tavern itself is cozy. I imagine the patio overlooking a creek is great in warmer weather. Service was friendly and efficient. I would have expected my fish and chips to be better in a British style place. It was one big piece (not an appetizing presentation) with not great batter. Chips (fries) were meh. Fish was flavorless. Chicken tenders were very good. The ambiance is just charming, the staff were very welcoming even thou we were early for reservations. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended during the winter season. Not sure what beer to try just talk to the knowledgeable staff and they will give a little sampling. The Roasted Brussels were simply to die for...a plentiful for the price. A lovely trip through the quaint horse county led us straight to an English style pub. I've been meaning to come here for a while, but the wait has always scared me off. It can get quite busy. Luckily we snagged a 345 reservation the day before and headed there for my birthday. Parking is also crazy, but they had complimentary valet set up right out front. The inside is adorable, dark wood, fireplaces, and cozy vibes. We were sat shortly after arriving. Our waitress was super friendly and had great recommendations. The beer selection was nice and had a good amount of mixed pours (half cider half beer). We got the black velvet (Guinness and cider). Loved it. We started with the Welsh rarebit. It was fantastic. Perfect warm cheese dip for a cold February day. My husband and I both got fish and chips with curry and mushy peas for our mains. AMAZING. Nice size piece of crispy fish. The mushy peas were out of this world. The kids split chicken fingers and fries and the Mac and cheese with tikka masala. The chicken was fantastic. It was actual chicken tenderloins hand breaded. A friend wanted to try this tavern so a few of us met for dinner. The atmosphere reminded me of an English tavern in the countryside which was really appropriate considering the location. This tavern is in the middle of farm country. It is a small restaurant but worth the drive. Reservations are required so do plan ahead. The parking is limited. I would recommend going early or on an off day as it gets crowded at prime times. We were luck to arrive before there was a big crowd. The food was excellent with many English type dishes to samples. Since we were in an English tavern we wanted to try some authentic style dishes. The Scotch Eggs were delicious. The Welsh Rarebit was to die for. All that gooey cheese with crostini was a perfect accompaniment to our ales. Dinner consisted of Shepard's pie, fish and chips, and the crab cake special. The crab cakes were meaty with minimal filler. The fish and chips had big pieces of fish with a light breading and steak fries. Not sure if the fries were homemade but they were good. The Shepard's Pie was really filling with a generous portion of meat and potatoes. Honestly, two people could easily have eaten the Shepard's pie and been full. We did indulge in dessert. Three dishes were ordered to share between our group. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was disappointing in my option. The cheesecake was good. Lastly we ordered an orange bunt cake dish which i think was a special. All were enjoyable and the perfect end to our meal. Drove a good 45 mins to check out this gem and we weren't disappointed. It's been 7 years since we spent a few months in the UK so it was a trip down nostalgia lane. We had the Welsh Rarebit( think of it as English queso) and scotch egg... yummy, delicious. We tried their special, Haggis (national dish of Scotland). It's a pudding that contains liver, heart and blood of the sheep; again super delicious. The people here are extremely friendly. It has a small patio that sits by the water so it's pretty on a warm day. However, the food is bar food and some English food. But it's severely overpriced. A chopped salad is $20.00 and wings are $19.00. I had an early dinner and had a burger. It was a decent burger but it wasn't anything spectacular. It was $20 with fries. Most recently, I l had the beef curry special (shown) and the wife had fish and chips (best spot in PA we have had) with a delicious pints followed by sticky toffee pudding for me and banoffee pie for the wife. This is one of our favorite restaurants, since we both love British pubs. The service is attentive and the food, especially the weekend specials, is wonderful. The beef Wellington is not to be missed when available, but really, everything on the menu is fantastic. And the selection of draft beers is magnificent -- with about five changing weekly. I'm an IPA-o-phile, and always find something to tickle my appetite for new ones. The ambiance could not be more authentic with both tables and, our favorite, an enormous mahogany bar that always seems to have room for two if we wait a bit. Best of all, the people are friendly and open for a chat, whether we know them or not -- we've made so many casual friends among them! I could,share some great tales of our experiences here, but suffice to say, it's one of our very favorite places to dine and enjoy a brew and I dare say you too will love it. read more

My friend and I were really looking forward to eating English food at the Whip, and drove a little over an hour to get there. Going we took country roads and drove through beautiful fields, pastures, tree groves. The Whip had somewhat intimidated us with their super stringent, several paragraph-long reservation policy, but this evening (a Friday) they were very crowded. It's intriguing, because it is in the middle of nowhere. The wait staff is friendly, attentive, and fast. Unfortunately, the food was not that great all of the ingredients are good, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. For example, the Bubble and Squeak, supposedly a potato cake filled with leeks and cabbage was mainly mashed potatoes, browned in a little skillet, with hardly a leek or cabbage leaf in sight. The main course of shepherds pie (we wanted to eat really traditional fare) was also a disappointment, because we had envisioned the ground lamb and vegetables in gravy, to have more than just some peas and ground meat in a tomato sauce; no rich, brown gravy with a delicious lamb flavor here....The peach tart desert was fine. The people portion (both staff and chatting customers) of the experience was fine; the food not worth the long drive, although the drive did turn out to be the best part of this outing. read more

The menu is definitely based off of UK specialties and includes shepherds pie (w/lamb), fish and chips, Welsh rarebit and scotch egg. I had the chopped salad; others had the Black Mack (double burger) with chips (fries) and the special curry dish. Everything was delicious -served hot and fresh to order. Well from all the wonderful reviews I was very excited to come here for brunch with my daughter. To say this was a disappointment is an understatement. I made reservations for 1:30 and didn't get seated until 2:00. The server was very busy but was curt from the very beginning. She could barely wait for me to put in my appetizer order since we were famished. The appetizer came in a timely manner. We ordered the Brussels sprouts which were actually very good. I was thinking OK this makes up for the wait... Then we waited for at least another 25 minutes for our meals which were two burgers. The food was served warm not hot. The fries were undercooked and the burgers were flavorless. We asked for the check and a to-go box which took at least another 10 minutes. She came back with the box but no check. Again we waited. She finally brought us the check and I immediately gave her my card so we wouldn't have to wait again for her to return. When she brought our receipt back she slapped it on the table without a thank you or another word and walked away. I tipped her 20% which is what I always tip even for poor service but I feel she made our visit less than enjoyable. There is no doubt we won't be returning. I will not give money to places that act like I'm an inconvenience. Additionally my daughter and I were both turned off by the flies. No one wants to be constantly swatting away bugs while seated at their table. read more
