A very unassuming brewery operated by extremely welcoming staff and full of great patrons. They offer a wide variety of styles. What a nice spot! We were so glad to discover Loose Shoe on a weekend getaway to this part of Virginia. We sampled several beers, got a big warm pretzel, and the bartender that night (so sweet, I forget her name though!) even gave my kids a few toys to play with while my husband and I sampled a few drinks. Really appreciate that you can order half a glass. I loved the Whiny Little Britches raspberry sour - yum! Don't miss their homemade root beer, too! read more

Had a great visit here! We had our pups with us, so we headed straight to the back patio. The woman working met us out there and brought an umbrella to make sure we had some shade. She was super friendly and even offered some water for our dogs (but we had some already). They have a very creative menu, and we enjoyed trying a good number of their beers. read more

What a great spot for craft beer! My dad and I came here pretty soon after they opened on a Wednesday afternoon (around 3:15pm). There weren't that many people when we got there, but by the time we left, there were quite a few people. We split a Mega Flight (12 tasters for $12), which was such a great deal! Some of my favorites were the Takin' Flight (a Belgian IPA), the Winter Blanket (a doppelbock), and the Alpha Mare (a New England IPA). The space was nicely decorated, and the outdoor patio looked nice, but it was just a bit too chilly to sit out there. Overall, Loose Shoe is a friendly spot with delicious brews! read more

So my wife and I pulled off of 29north to see if we could google a brewery. As we pulled off the exit we were confronted with what seemed like a sign from God. The sight read, " loose shoe brewing company" and indicated right with an arrow. God speaks in riddles some times but this seemed clear. We went as instructed and were not dissapointed. We tried a few delicious brews and listened to some live music. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was purposely casual and comfortable. The live music was great. We noticed that this brewery was listed as an attraction for one of the exits off of route 29 and decided to stop. The "loose shoe" refers to loose horse shoes. The brewer is a farrier and the decor has a farrier and horse them. The brewer is small and appear to have a limited capacity. They sell beer in their brew pub and will fill growlers to go. They don not appear to bottle or can anything at the time. I had the flight of six beers which is the full complement of their selections. Always a stopping point when I'm in Amherst. Love the fact they've expanded to 12 taps. Always something delicious to be found here. Great little hole in the wall with fantastic service. Vixenbier (named after the Sweet Briar Vixens) is always a solid choice, but the milk stout is superb. September 1, 2018 update. I've been back a few times (though I don't make it up to Amherst too regularly). They have a WTF (Watermelon That's Fermented) cream ale that is strangely good. Average ABV, and the watermelon flavor is spot-on. Not artificial at all. I didn't expect it to taste so good. Gotta get a growler of this to take back home with me. read more

Great local brewery with a friendly vibe. We are from Florida and decided to try some local craft beer here in a Virginia. We got the 12 beer flight. The stand out beers were the Barn Burner (Habanero IPA), Haulin Oats (oatmeal stout), and Island Brew (coconut porter). The 12 beer flight was only $12, which gave a nice sample to work towards a pint. Also, they do half pints. You can try a couple beers without getting full on one. A must see if you are in the Lynchburg/Amherst area. read more

Great atmosphere especially if you like horses! My favorite was Summertime Blues -a blueberry lemon Pilsner. We had our dog so we sat on the patio. This brewery pays attention to all the details. The cleanliness, the décor, the service, and most definitely the quality of the beer. We are brew hoppers and plan our trips around breweries. This is our favorite place. You know you have a good place when you see German beer drinkers coming in regularly and bringing home baked German bread to share! The brewer takes his time and ensures quality before he puts in on tap. Menus for local restaurants; Mexican, Americana, and Pizza next door can be ordered and brought in the enjoy! We come for the beer but the place has a small town feel that is right out of Mayberry.... very welcoming. The clientele are always up for a good exchange of conversation but if you want a cold beer and solace it's there as well. GOOD Beer, Good People, and Good Times! Worth the stop! We took 29 from Greensboro to D.C. and this small brewery was a great little surprise. Friendly staff, calm atmosphere. The owner served us and was very kind and open for a chat. I only saw popcorn at the bar but there's a Domino's pizza next door :P They have 6 taps...today they had a lager, saison, apa, jalapeño ipa, coconut porter, and an oatmeal stout. They serve pony flights (3) and full flights of all 6. I really like that they served 1/2 pints along with their pints and growlers so I could get a couple favorites from the flight with out getting tooooo tipsy ;D sign in on their push pin map to the left if you're from out of state! read more

Very tasty double IPA. Full pint was $6+ tax. Spendy, but good. Doesn't serve food, but has local restaurants cater events on occasion.

Great selection of ales with my favorite being the double IPA. Reminds me of a less pungent west coast IPA. Of special note would be the watermelon beer. (WTF), really tasty and smooth without being too sweet. The brewery is very clean and has an outdoor area complete with cornhole, great for any afternoon. read more

Nice little brewery in a strip mall off highway 29. Stopped in to imbibe on the way to Charlottesville. Friendly service from the man behind the counter. Lots of beer options- none were bad but none were outstanding. Best bets are the Vienna Lager, Rye Pale, Barn Burner IPA, Scottish Ale, and Oatmeal Stout. Flights very affordable - the mega was 12 samples for $12. Atmosphere was average; seems like a popular spot for locals. read more
