What a nice spot! We were so glad to discover Loose Shoe on a weekend getaway to this part of Virginia. We sampled several beers, got a big warm pretzel, and the bartender that night (so sweet, I forget her name though!) even gave my kids a few toys to play with while my husband and I sampled a few drinks. Really appreciate that you can order half a glass. I loved the Whiny Little Britches raspberry sour - yum! Don't miss their homemade root beer, too!

Had a great visit here! We had our pups with us, so we headed straight to the back patio. The woman working met us out there and brought an umbrella to make sure we had some shade. She was super friendly and even offered some water for our dogs (but we had some already). They have a very creative menu, and we enjoyed trying a good number of their beers.

My husband and I came through town on a weekend getaway and found this brewery. We were pleasantly surprised by the welcoming small town feel. Everyone was extremely nice and the beer was great! We hope to go back sometime!

We noticed that this brewery was listed as an attraction for one of the exits off of route 29 and decided to stop. The "loose shoe" refers to loose horse shoes. The brewer is a farrier and the decor has a farrier and horse them. The brewer is small and appear to have a limited capacity. They sell beer in their brew pub and will fill growlers to go. They don not appear to bottle or can anything at the time. I had the flight of six beers which is the full complement of their selections. I enjoyed their beers especially their IPA with habanero and their red ale.

Great little place off the beaten path featuring a wide variety of creative brews and quality cornerstones like pilsners, hefs and ipas. Quiet and cozy on a Thursday evening, I'll definitely stop by next time I roll by.

Super nice place! Great beer in a very relaxing environment... The Habanero IPA is awesome, you get the essence of habanero and the taste of the pepper with the spice! Like most breweries they allow you to bring in your own food, and the dominos next door will even deliver! I definitely recommend trying out a flight of their beers to see what's best for you. Overall one of the best and most relaxed breweries I've been too.

Very tasty double IPA. Full pint was $6+ tax. Spendy, but good. Doesn't serve food, but has local restaurants cater events on occasion.

I was already not in the mood for anymore drinking after spending a weekend in a major tournament in Lynchburg. Anyways, for a Saturday evening, this place was pretty packed both inside and outside. We both ended up getting a flight of beers each and every one was great. The food surprised me as my fish tacos was super fresh. The chips and queso was also great. Overall, a must see - especially for the view of the mountains if you decided to eat outdoors.

They just do them all very slowly or at least they did when I was there. We came here on a Monday evening, and it was somewhat busy but there were visible empty tables and a couple spots at the bar. We went to the bar and waited awhile before the bartender asked what we wanted. I didn't ask for a flight because he seemed too busy. Whatever I wanted they were out of, but I ended up with an Imperial 16-point IPA which was quite tasty. I also got some chicken nachos, but I had to go stand in line to order them. They were adequate but not worth the wait. The place was very disorganized. They had workers always standing by the hostess desk, but the bartender was overwhelmed. Seemed like they should have had more than one, after all it is a brewery. Would have loved to try more beer but we just left and went back into Lexington for another round at another place. I don't know maybe it was just a bad night.

But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. All in all, Devil's Backbone isn't just a place to eat and drink. It's a place where a simple plan quietly turns into a better evening than you expected.

We visited around 3:00 p.m., well before the dinner rush, so we weren't expecting service delays or other issues. Unfortunately, the food was bland, overly oily, and significantly overpriced for the quality. We used to come here regularly and always enjoyed it, but it just isn't what it once was. The dining area was also uncomfortably warm, as the air conditioning didn't appear to be on. The only relief came when the kitchen door opened. Service felt rushed and impersonal as well--we were greeted with a curt "Where do you want this plate?" when our food arrived, which didn't make us feel particularly welcome. The property itself remains a lovely place to spend some time outdoors, but based on this visit, we wouldn't recommend it as a destination for dinner. We hope the restaurant can return to the level of quality and hospitality it once offered.
