    Perfectly medium rare burger

So my son and I stopped here for the first time yesterday. Been wanting to try for long time and heard good things. Loved the layout and inside and felt Tavernish. Was recommended getting the fish and chips. The waitress we had was really nice. Had the Jacks switchback IPA that was good. My son ordered the BYOB and asked for medium rare. I ordered the fish and chips with a side of tarter.. So for some weird reason and they were not busy, we waited about 30mins for our food. When it came out, two things, it looked as if it had been dropped on the floor, and it was cold and no tarter. The waitress stopped and asked how everything looked, and I asked her to feel my fish. She did and realized same thing it was cold. She apologized and took it and said be right back. After about 45secs, another girl, maybe manager, brought the same pile of crap back out. So they took it back put it back in the deep fryer and brought right back out, and of course No apologies or anything. It was a nasty greasy dried up mess with the same fries still on my plate. I honestly couldn't believe what I saw. I just assumed would be fresh pieces especially after I had the waitress touch it. So, I asked my son how his burger was cooked and no surprise, well done. No manager to come and talk to me nada. They obviously could care less. Check the pictures for your opinion.

It was a busy Friday night at Jack Mason's. Fortunately we got there early so we could walk right in and sit right down. On the positive side, the service was great. The wait staff was pleasant, and enjoyed their job. Our server, Destiny, was very attentive and personable. My wife and I shared an order of cheese curds. They were not what we expected. I guess I was thinking of the cheese that you might get in poutine. Cheese with more density and flavor. These were deep fried bits of nothingness. Tasteless, but nice and hot. We tried everything to ramp up the flavor, such as hot sauce, salt, pepper. They fell flat. My wife had a drink called the mistress sampler, which came in rather small glass. It was tasty. For our entrées, we were torn between ordering the special, Asian sea bass or fish and chips. We both opted for the fish and chips. On the positive side the fish and fries were very hot. The fish was crispy and the portions were huge. But like the cheese curds, the fish had very little flavor. It was very bland. The star of this fish dish was the roasted vegetables, especially the carrots. The carrots were a yellow variety, sweet and done perfectly. Since we were just passing through on our way to PA, I know we'll never be back. I hate to judge a place on one experience, but...

Great service and great dinner at Jack Mason's. I had a tasty beer and a great salad. First, try their Log Hopper Kölsch. It was excellent with just the right hoppy taste. Second, the Cobb salad was non-traditional but excellent. Only a light base of spring mix and the rest topped with pepper jack cheese and bacon (a lot of bacon!), hard boiled egg, tomatoes, and grilled chicken. Filling and delicious. Lovely meal and worth returning. [Review 19594 overall - 1431 in Virginia - 565 of 2023.]

We were taking a trip near Roanoke. The town was so small that dining options were limited. The tavern has been around fir a long time. It looks smaller than it is from the outside. Our group had seven people. We were offered a larger dining room in the back. The tavern I decorated with souvenir photos and a nod to local celebrities and athletes. There are older video games available. The menu has sandwiches, burgers and chili. The prices are decent. Our server did a nice job at checking on us and bringing extra plates, ketchup and refills. The egg rolls were amazing. The salads were large. Half of us needed to go boxes since the portions were so big. The tomato soup was my favorite. The atmosphere was fun. We could see the train passing by from across the street. This is a quaint little town. I would come back again.

I have visited this restaurant several times over the years and never expected exceptional service…read more Really only ever the bare minimum. Unfortunately, even that appears to be too much to ask. On my most recent visit, I arrived alone and took an open seat at the bar, which seemed like the obvious choice for a solo diner. I immediately noticed food from a completely different fast-food restaurant scattered across part of the counter. Since it was on the employee side of the bar and both employees were standing behind it, I reasonably assumed they were eating between tasks. In fact, one employee was actively eating from the food while on the clock. While unprofessional, I chose to overlook it. What I could not overlook was the behavior of the employee I later learned was named Betty. Rather than greeting me or taking my order, Betty decided to make comments about my choice of seating to the other patrons sitting at the bar. Instead of speaking to me directly, she chose to publicly imply that I had done something wrong by sitting in an open seat clearly intended for customers. When I asked whether she was referring to me, she confronted me and explained that it should have been "obvious" that the area occupied by their fast-food meal was reserved for the employees. Let that sink in: an employee eating food from another restaurant behind the counter felt entitled to publicly criticize a paying customer for sitting at a customer seat because it interfered with her personal breakfast. The entire interaction was embarrassing, unprofessional, and incredibly disrespectful. The issue wasn't the food. It wasn't the seat. It was the astonishing sense of entitlement and complete lack of customer service displayed by someone whose job is to provide hospitality. If employees want designated dining areas, management should provide them. What should never happen is a customer being publicly singled out and treated like an inconvenience for using a seat intended for patrons. Needless to say, I left without ordering. I will not be returning, and I will be sharing this experience with others. Poor service is one thing. Being openly mocked and confronted for sitting in an available customer seat is another level entirely. This restaurant already struggled with mediocre service. After this experience, it has earned something far worse: a reputation for making customers feel unwelcome.

I would say this restaurant is a high class local steakhouse and not much on good seafood…read more I went there and I was on the only customer (this was about 5:45 in evening) so the waitress was in parking lot on her phone, but quickly went inside and meet me. She got my table ready, which took no more than 5 minutes. Where I was seated, they had dim red lights on, which made it a little hard to see the food and menu. I wanted Mussels as an appetizer, but they were out. So, I got Cold Cocktail Shrimp instead. They were ok, the cocktail sauce was too strong thou. They also put out fresh rolls. The rolls were good, just small. Next, I ordered a Grilled combo of shrimp and scallops, with a side of steak fries. On the sides, for an upscale restaurant, there were not many side options. As for the main dish, the Shrimp was barely edible and the scallops were ok. Both had no flavor, tasted like they were grilled too long. The cocktail sauce helped a little with the scallops. The waitress was great and professional, I also talked with the owner. Who was walking the restaurant. Overall, as to the seafood side of the menu. I'm not really impressed. Maybe the steaks are good. But overall, I don't recommend this restaurant.
