We stay in Douthat park for thanksgiving week and Jack Mason's is a staple in our dinner rotation for the week. We love to sit at the bar but there are tables and booths for those who don't prefer that. It's very rustic with license plates all over the wall of the bar. I always like my mixed drink. The bar tenders are always really nice but sometimes you have to wave them down. We love their burgers, BBQ sandwich, chicken Caesar wrap and chicken sandwich. read more

So my son and I stopped here for the first time yesterday. Been wanting to try for long time and heard good things. Loved the layout and inside and felt Tavernish. Was recommended getting the fish and chips. The waitress we had was really nice. Had the Jacks switchback IPA that was good. My son ordered the BYOB and asked for medium rare. I ordered the fish and chips with a side of tarter.. So for some weird reason and they were not busy, we waited about 30mins for our food. When it came out, two things, it looked as if it had been dropped on the floor, and it was cold and no tarter. The waitress stopped and asked how everything looked, and I asked her to feel my fish. She did and realized same thing it was cold. She apologized and took it and said be right back. After about 45secs, another girl, maybe manager, brought the same pile of crap back out. So they took it back put it back in the deep fryer and brought right back out, and of course No apologies or anything. It was a nasty greasy dried up mess with the same fries still on my plate. I honestly couldn't believe what I saw. I just assumed would be fresh pieces especially after I had the waitress touch it. So, I asked my son how his burger was cooked and no surprise, well done. I've also left the same review on Google and Facebook. It's too long to post here. However, there's no communication. With staff members, it's not a place to bring a family. If something goes wrong your server will disappear and avoid you at all costs. The business is very poorly ran and it seems they do not know how to properly train people. read more

It was a busy Friday night at Jack Mason's. Fortunately we got there early so we could walk right in and sit right down. On the positive side, the service was great. The wait staff was pleasant, and enjoyed their job. Our server, Destiny, was very attentive and personable. My wife and I shared an order of cheese curds. They were not what we expected. I guess I was thinking of the cheese that you might get in poutine. Cheese with more density and flavor. These were deep fried bits of nothingness. Tasteless, but nice and hot. We tried everything to ramp up the flavor, such as hot sauce, salt, pepper. They fell flat. My wife had a drink called the mistress sampler, which came in rather small glass. It was tasty. For our entrées, we were torn between ordering the special, Asian sea bass or fish and chips. We both opted for the fish and chips. On the positive side the fish and fries were very hot. The fish was crispy and the portions were huge. But like the cheese curds, the fish had very little flavor. It was very bland. The star of this fish dish was the roasted vegetables, especially the carrots. The carrots were a yellow variety, sweet and done perfectly. Great service and great dinner at Jack Mason's. I had a tasty beer and a great salad. First, try their Log Hopper Kölsch. It was excellent with just the right hoppy taste. Second, the Cobb salad was non-traditional but excellent. Only a light base of spring mix and the rest topped with pepper jack cheese and bacon (a lot of bacon!), hard boiled egg, tomatoes, and grilled chicken. Filling and delicious. We were road tripping from DC to Mississippi and had intended to stop in the little town and grab Dairy Queen really quickly. In what turned out to be a happy turn of events, the DQ was closed and we ended up here. The wait staff was exceptionally friendly and patient with our three year old and in fact took her to pick out some books while we waited for our food. The food was great, hot, and tasty. We never meant to come here but if we ever find ourselves driving this way again, we will definitely make a stop. read more

Always good food and stays busy. Sometimes it's a little slow to arrive to table but you bet it's worth it. The environment is nice and doesn't usually feel overly crowded like some places. Staff is always nice every time we visit. Price for food is well worth what you receive. Give it a try if you haven't. We stopped in after driving into town for Michael's Pizza (also highly recommended) and Michael's was closed. What a great find! We walked in and there was live music, seating available and it was nice and cool. The girl that brought the menus was surprisingly silent when I said hello and asked how she was, so that was odd, but it was the "worst" (if I can call It that) thing about our visit. Our server was really nice and showed us just the right amount of attention. We ordered chicken strips, a club sandwich and fish and chips. It was a bit slow to come out, but fully expected for a bar serving food on a Saturday night. The fish was really good and served with a great dill flavored tartar sauce and some cocktail sauce - we've never had it served with cocktail sauce, so that was a nice surprise. The chicken strips were pretty standard, as was the club. Kids said it was great and want to go back next time we are in town. We were taking a trip near Roanoke. The town was so small that dining options were limited. The tavern has been around fir a long time. It looks smaller than it is from the outside. Our group had seven people. We were offered a larger dining room in the back. The tavern I decorated with souvenir photos and a nod to local celebrities and athletes. There are older video games available. The menu has sandwiches, burgers and chili.The prices are decent. Our server did a nice job at checking on us and bringing extra plates, ketchup and refills. The egg rolls were amazing.The salads were large. Half of us needed to go boxes since the portions were so big. The tomato soup was my favorite. The atmosphere was fun. We could see the train passing by from across the street. This is a quaint little town. I would come back again. read more

The service was great, the ambiance was nice the food was pretty good. My husband got the fish and chips and enjoyed them, I got the fish tacos and was very unimpressed. They were more like a fish sandwich on a cold flour tortilla. No seasonings of anything to make them like a taco should be. Cold flour tortilla, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, unseasoned fried fish, and tartar sauce. Nope....that's not a fish taco. The cheese curds were interesting...but not like any other cheese curds I've ever had. Things were cooked ok, just seems the chef may need a few lessons in seasonings. Would I go back? Not only did they fulfill the order--the steaks and sauce were delicious. Our guests enjoyed the food so much and were able to enjoy the reception. If you're coming through the area there is no better place than JMT to cure what ails ya! Oh! Try a Mistress Seltzer or a Happy Knack IPA (brewed in their brewery next door) and a Pub Steak or Spicy Tavern Burger (I like to add a fried egg to mine) for an optimal experience! So happy to have JMT in our backyard! The restaurant and brewery have always been amazing, but watching them change ownership recently so seamlessly has been a testament to how brilliantly proper handover can be executed when the right people who care about their town are involved! read more

On our travels through Virginia, we found this tavern / Brewery Not too far off I-64. It is a very welcome visit vs. the fast food right off the highway. It is set up as an Irish pub and took my wife and I back to our trip to the west coast of Ireland. We each had a wrap while the kids ordered off the kids menu. It was a fun environment and the staff was excellent. If I go again, I'd not get the wraps. The looked good, but I think while at a pub, I should have ordered pub food. WOW, what an amazing evening at Jack Mason's! I was in Clifton Forge for Thanksgiving 2022 and found the "ground zero" place to be. First, the joint was mobbed with locals... and as an outsider, it was gratifying to find such a friendly crowd, along with an incredibly attentive staff. The drinks were appreciably stiff, the food marvelous (chicken quesadillas w/a side of HOT fries) and best of all, the owners, ANN & MICHAEL, treated me as if we've known each other for decades. We stopped in Covington VA on our way to the OBX and couldn't find good restaurants nearby. This was a few exits away but we'll worth the drive. The food was great and the service was even better. The chips are homemade and yummy. I had the basic chicken sandwich which was cooked perfectly and had delicious basil mayo. The setting is cute and the town definitely looks like it has potential. Easy going kind of restaurant with no pretense but great food. It's also halfway between Lexington and Covington, which was a great place to stop for dinner after visiting our cadet at VMI and heading to our hotel. The little town of Clifton Forge is also so cute, and you can walk up and down the sidewalks and enjoy the history of the place if you have to wait a few minutes to get seated. I love Jack's. The friendly staff is always happy to serve you and make you feel welcome from the time you enter the doors. I have eaten there regularly ever since they've opened. I was a little worried when it changed hands, but they did so flawlessly and did it with flare. Adding new foods to the menu and tasty new appetizers for our pallets. Bravo!! I go regularly for Trivia night on Tuesday and join my group of friends. We all eat regularly before, and all have our favorite foods, but sometimes mix it up. But I have never heard anyone who was dissatisfied with the meal or appetizers that they got from the Tavern and that is saying something!! considering how many meals we've had there this year!!! The amazing thing is we also mix our groups of friends, we don't always play with the same group of friends, because of everyone's schedules, we yen and yang, but, because in meeting regularly I've found that we have all become a melting pot of Jack Mason Fiends.
