The ambiance was very cute and the staff were very attentive and helpful. We appreciated that one even came out to take a photo of us in front of the wheel. Dinner so great we went twice in 24 hours. We sat at the bar the first night and had a great time with Mikey. He was so attentive and personable. We had great drinks (and mocktails) and per his recommendation we got the chicken which was truly the best chicken I've ever had. It was so juicy and supple (I've never used that word for chicken before.) I got the Rib Eye and if I was wearing socks, they would've been knocked clean off. The flourless chocolate cake was also stunning. Night one was a grand slam. For night two we sat in the dining room and it was lovely! We had the burrata salad which felt like spring in a dish. We got the Salmon and the Trout and they were both so delicious. Perfectly cooked. We ventured to the wine cellar and chose our own bottle which was such a fun experience. My husband and I spent our mini-moon at the Inn at Gristmill Square and had dinner at the Waterwheel our first night. It was an incredible way to kick off our relaxation! Our waitress Kelly was wonderful, she was so knowledgeable and sweet and even stayed a little late while we finished our meal. The food was absolutely delicious. We split the beets and burrata, wedge salad, smoked trout, duck confit, and filet mignon and have only high praise for the food. Every dish was incredible, and I'm guessing the same is true for the rest of the menu. The ambiance is romantic and rustic, and even when it's busy it's not too loud. Shared a tomahawk steak for dinner and got extra mashed potatoes and a side salad to split. The meal was absolutely wonderful and the service was excellent. Love, the fact that I could select a bottle of wine from the cellar for dinner. We also had dessert which I can't recall now what it was, but it was definitely worth it. The restaurant is set in an old gristmill. Very tastefully done inside. We really enjoyed the ambience. Everyone of the staff was warm and friendly. We really felt welcomed by the hostess, and our server, Demanda, could not have been more pleasant. She was helpful and very attentive, but still let us at the pace. Everything we ordered was exceptional. We started with the heirloom tomato salad and the peaches and Burata starter. For entrées, we tried the trout and the beef stroganoff. The trout sat a top, perfectly cooked asparagus, and succotash. The beef stroganoff was a generous short rib on top of pasta and fresh mushrooms with a light stroganoff sauce. Simply delicious. The short rib was crisped making it very flavorful. We really did not have room for dessert, but powered through it and ordered. We tried the maple sour cream cake. It was the best dessert, or at least one of the best desserts I have ever had. So good! If you're in the area or staying at the Homestead resort, don't neglect going to this restaurant. The reviews for this restaurant are spot on. We had an amazing date night experience here over the weekend and are still raving about the food/drinks. Their almond old fashioneds were great, we ended up with a burrata appetizer, Caesar and blue cheese salad, and a ribeye that we split. Everything was delicious and our server was so friendly. We go back to the Waterwheel restaurant every five or ten years to celebrate a milestone anniversary. 10 years ago, my wife and I got engaged in a bed and breakfast in Goshen Virginia called the Hummingbird Inn. We celebrated our engagement with an amazing dinner at this beautiful rustic and historical fine dining restaurant. To this day, the Waterwheel restaurant still holds a special place in our hearts. The ambiance is like a romantic fairytale novel. Everything from the decor, the music, the utensils, just says romance all over it. Not to mention how quaint and quiet it is. How do you describe one of the best meals you have ever eaten. Each course was better than the last. Pate, trout, butternut squash ravioli, bread, maple cake with ice cream. Each dish so rich and flavorful and fresh. The signature Pinot noir from the Willamette valley was another special find. Our server was so warm and communicative. Came here twice as stayed at nearby Omni Homestead. They also have a small inn with 18 rooms. They are about 5 miles from hotel so need a car as the hotel shuttle will not drive you here. They call themselves a farm to table restaurant which in my opinion is overused. I have seen some go into long descriptions of where they got the ingredients. This menu and staff luckily did not. None of the items are breaking culinary grounds but instead they do classic food well. Everything we had from our Welsh rarebit(savory cheese sauce with bread) to our dessert of crème brûlée was good. The beef stroganoff might not be way an Eastern European grandma would make it as has large piece of short rib instead of smaller pieces cooked into the sauce. They have some glasses of wine but there wine cellar is literally that where you go down and pick out a bottle. They had around 13 different Chardonnay's ranging from those that would retail at 24 to over 100. Their markup is very reasonable as the Rombeaur chard by glass was less expensive than same at hotel. If coming to area this should be one of two restaurants to check out. read more

The lovely setting, friendly and professional staff and incredible food made this such a memorable evening. Stand-out dishes were the Jumbo Shrimp and Grits, Sweet Corn Chowder, perfectly cooked Duck Confit, creamy, comforting Papparadelle, Gazpacho with Crab, and the warm focaccia to start the dinner! The wine selections in the cellar were beyond compare. Our grandkids enjoyed the cream brûlée (who wouldn't?), but I think we ordered all the delicious desserts. While staying in nearby Millboro, VA we came here one evening for a special birthday dinner. The venue is amazing, a beautiful old mill! Love how they've restored it and converted it into a restaurant. Also, it features a beautiful wine cellar with a gravel floor and instead of a wine list, they take you on a tour of the cellar and explain the wines, based on your desire/taste and show you what they offer. Each bottle has a price on it and it beautifully displayed. Their menu is slightly small, yet adequate. They offer several appetizers, a few salads and several entrees. They have a decent dessert menu that offers enough goodies, it's hard to decide what to get. Uniqueness of the menu and preparation of the food was on-point! Preparation was nearly spot-on, with exception of only one dish, my entrée of filet, which was slightly over-done. It was brough to John's attention and he did offer to re-fire a new one, but I was fine with leaving it be, since it was only slightly over-done. Salad was outstanding! French onion soup was also outstanding! Beet & heirloom salad was not only outstanding, but unique, as it came with burrata as well. Their table bread is amazingly prepare, moist, soft, and nicely risen and it comes with an amazing lemony butter to spread on it! Only other issue was dessert... they have a unique Maple Cake, which I just had to try, but unfortunately, it was slightly dry and not moist at all. Also, since this was a milestone birthday dinner, most places would have comp'd the dessert. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit and gladly say this is a 4.51 star place, so we're giving them 5 stars. John, our server (who is also the Somm and owner) offers nice service and good conversation. They were rather busy for our midweek dinner visit, with multiple turns on tables. I not only look forward to returning here, which I most definitely will when back in the area, but I'll also visit their French restaurant in Hot Springs. read more

Since I am staying at the Griss Mill I decided to try the restaurant that is on property. The service is friendly and they had immediate seating without a reservation since I arrived around 5:30pm. I ordered the salmon with a salad topping and chunky red sauce around the fish. It was really tasty. The meal also came with fresh bread and I opted for the spring water. It is a mostly adult restaurant, bar and rustic decor. It is not open on Mondays or Tuesdays so keep that in mind too. Not many restaurants around here open on Mondays. My husband and I visited the Waterwheel on a visit to Hot Springs, VA. We are staying at the Homestead, but I wanted to investigate other local places to find the best local spots. The Waterwheel came highly recommended on Yelp, so we checked it out. The ambiance is immaculate and so beautiful and historic. Our server was extremely attentive. The bread service is top notch with clearly homemade focaccia and butter. We ordered the smoked trout toast, which was such a surprising win. The trout was excellent paired with the horseradish, crème fraise and roe. I had never had anything like it and really enjoyed it. I had my heart set on duck breast but it was no longer on the menu. However, our excellent server checked with the chef and they had a singular duck breast left, which was secured for me. It was crispy and moist and the wine and cherry sauce were immaculate, but I can't neglect mentioning the amazing creamy mashed potatoes, which were top tier. My husband ordered the beef stroganoff and it was excellent. He in particular loved the sauce. This is an impeccable restaurant worth visiting. Highly recommend! read more

Just went here for anniversary dinner. It's part of a nice bed and breakfast "village" consisting of different houses you can stay in. The restaurant is the actual old mill from the 1700s, retaining a lot of the charm of the original. It's not that big of a place so I would make reservations. For drinks you can go pick a bottle from the wine cellar but I opted for local hard cider which was tasty. For dinner I had shrimp and grits with greens while my wife had Joyce farm chicken with Brussels sprouts. Everything was just delicious! Our waiter was cheerful and we had good service.
