    Beets and Burrata

My husband and I spent our mini-moon at the Inn at Gristmill Square and had dinner at the Waterwheel our first night. It was an incredible way to kick off our relaxation! Our waitress Kelly was wonderful, she was so knowledgeable and sweet and even stayed a little late while we finished our meal. The food was absolutely delicious. We split the beets and burrata, wedge salad, smoked trout, duck confit, and filet mignon and have only high praise for the food. Every dish was incredible, and I'm guessing the same is true for the rest of the menu. The ambiance is romantic and rustic, and even when it's busy it's not too loud. You absolutely need to stop by the Waterwheel and stay at the Inn at Gristmill Square, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent! After having about six meals here during my day, I can definitely say I love everything. I tried at the restaurant! I'm looking forward to visiting again next year!

I love the Waterwheel. There's an informal fine dining vibe in the dining areas. It's small but roomy. It's intimate but somewhere you might see local friends. The food is fabulous. We deeply miss the Welsh rarebit (bring it back??) but love the seasonal changes to the menu. There's always something fresh, fun, and delicious to explore and there are new takes on classic dishes. The food is high quality but not small portioned. You'll leave full and happy. They have a wine cellar they can tour you around. The service staff is always friendly and helpful. They make great recommendations on new dishes. Love, love, love this place.

The restaurant is set in an old gristmill. Very tastefully done inside. We really enjoyed the ambience. Everyone of the staff was warm and friendly. We really felt welcomed by the hostess, and our server, Demanda, could not have been more pleasant. She was helpful and very attentive, but still let us at the pace. Everything we ordered was exceptional. We started with the heirloom tomato salad and the peaches and Burata starter. For entrées, we tried the trout and the beef stroganoff. The trout sat a top, perfectly cooked asparagus, and succotash. The beef stroganoff was a generous short rib on top of pasta and fresh mushrooms with a light stroganoff sauce. Simply delicious. The short rib was crisped making it very flavorful. We really did not have room for dessert, but powered through it and ordered. We tried the maple sour cream cake. It was the best dessert, or at least one of the best desserts I have ever had. So good! If you're in the area or staying at the Homestead resort, don't neglect going to this restaurant. You would be sorry you missed it.

O.M.G. When 3 different people you randomly meet at a hotel you're staying at ALL say to try a restaurant down the road ... you go... and then you're SO GLAD you listened..! These folks are doing some kind of voo doo magic in the background ... unreal flavors, phenomenally cooked, I mean we were licking our plates. The staff are lovely but also serve you with the energy of yea we know- it's amazing. We've booked to go back next time we're in warm springs and BOOK AHEAD. This gorgeous 18th century restaurant is small and the charm is off the hook!

We go back to the Waterwheel restaurant every five or ten years to celebrate a milestone anniversary. 10 years ago, my wife and I got engaged in a bed and breakfast in Goshen Virginia called the Hummingbird Inn. We celebrated our engagement with an amazing dinner at this beautiful rustic and historical fine dining restaurant. To this day, the Waterwheel restaurant still holds a special place in our hearts. The ambiance is like a romantic fairytale novel. Everything from the decor, the music, the utensils, just says romance all over it. Not to mention how quaint and quiet it is. We highly recommend the Waterwheel restaurant for anyone who is looking to celebrate a romantic occasion and to reconnect with that special someone over a romantic dinner.

A very nice, quiet and dainty place to enjoy an anniversary dinner or special occasion. It is a little pricey, but it was an overall wonderful experience. The history and charm alone make this place a must see! The staff were very nice also!

The Waterwheel was recommended by the concierge at the Omni for my friends 50th birthday. The hostess was out of her way nice and informative. The food was amazing in our opinion. We had smoked trout appetizer, beef stroganoff, and shrimp and grits. The bread was so good! But the CREME BRÛLÉE was the best we've ever had! This was the best food we had at our stay in the area.

The biggest issue was that the restaurant's air conditioning was not working, and no one told us before we were seated. We had made reservations knowing there was a cancellation policy with fees for late cancellations, so once we were seated and had placed our order, we didn't feel comfortable leaving. It wasn't until after our order was taken that our server mentioned the AC was out, although by then it was obvious from how hot and uncomfortable the dining room had become. I want to be clear that this is not a reflection of our server or the staff. They were kind, professional, and I honestly don't know how they were able to work in those conditions. We appreciated the complimentary watermelon and feta salad, but it didn't make up for the overall experience. The meal lasted nearly two hours, with long waits before our order was taken and again before our food arrived. My husband became so overheated that he felt sick and had to leave the table before finishing his dinner, leaving my daughter and me to finish what was supposed to be a family meal alone. When my shrimp and grits finally arrived, they were only lukewarm. My disappointment is really with management. Guests should have been informed about the lack of air conditioning before being seated and offered the choice to dine elsewhere if another venue was available. I was also surprised that no manager came through the dining room to apologize, explain the situation, or thank guests for their patience. Unexpected maintenance issues happen, but clear communication and proactive guest service make all the difference. Unfortunately, that was missing during our visit.

There are so many options in this lovely town but I made a reservation at Zynodoa because I have been on a farm-to-table kick lately. The servers and hosts were all lovely, interacting with both the guests and each other professionally and amicably. My server Sarah gave me as much attention as anyone else, even though I was the only person dining alone. I ordered the tomato and burrata appetizer. I am not a big raw tomato eater but I knew if these were truly farm-to-table, they would taste good, and they did. The flavor felt like a combination of sunshine and a warm hug! The cheese tasted like a sweet kiss. The portion was substantial, and there was balsamic reduction and a generous amount of coarse pesto. I ate the whole thing! For the main course I ordered the flat iron steak. Because I was traveling and didn't want leftovers, I asked the server for a smaller portion than listed, but either I wasn't clear or it wasn't an option--It's okay, though. I ordered the steak medium rare but it was a shade above rare; again, okay. Sides were good but I added salt. The meal was a bit pricey but probably fair given that it was sourced locally. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the chef is heavy handed on the sauces, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. Oh, I ordered the pinot noir and it was good, smooth, balanced. Overall impression of Zynodoa was it felt like visiting the home of a friend with a garden who loves to cook and share with her friends. The portions were generous and the seasoning was substantial. I highly recommend to anyone visiting Staunton.

The cocktail and mocktails were flavorful and well priced. Our waiter was great. Very knowledgeable about the menu, town and ingredients. We started with the Chicken Liver pate. This was well prepared, although I hate when a restaurant provides an odd number of toasts for two people. We asked for an extra piece and thought it was funny that they gave us exactly one. FYI- it comes with several accoutrements which were tasty, but the mustard was really the most satisfying. My wife had the brisket, which I would call a must have. Fantastic Asian spices, fried rice ball and Kimchi. Just an explosion of flavors. I was glad she shared. (This is uncommon) I had the pork chop and it was really pretty. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor and I had to carve off the fat which made up about 1/3rd of the chop. The bone was the other third...so it turned out to be a thick but modest cut. That said, it was on a lovely bed of mash and some of the best blue and white carrots I ever had. We finished with the carrot cake. (All of the desserts are made onsite.) which we learned was gluten free. Honestly if it was marked GF I wouldn't have ordered it. Anyway, when it arrived I thought we received the wrong thing. It looked like a decorative cliff bar. Once we took a bite we were blown away by the flavors and texture. It was delicious. Such a great experience. We were near the kitchen, so we got to see the head chef get orders out. There were some highs and lows, but the overall experience was really nice.

This isn't a "greasy spoon" with a boring, basic menu, rather Jenny (the chef) has an amazing menu loaded with freshly made items and sauces. She spends a lot of time and energy putting together some great, uniquely prepared menu items that sound typical, but aren't done the typical way. Her Shrimp Po Boy was outstanding! The bread is part of what makes an amazing Po Boy and she knocked it out of the park by selecting the bread she's using. She explained she specifically selected this bakery for the bread and it came out perfect! The shrimp was perfectly battered with a slight cornmeal batter (I know, not traditional, but perfectly done!) and the sauce on top brought it together nicely! The steak & cheese was excellent! Nice beef, no fat/gristle and great toppings and cheese... We added sautéed jalapeño and onions to it and they really made it taste great! My favorite item was her cole slaw - it was unbelievably tasty and very fresh! You can tell it's made fresh daily!!! The fish sandwich is incredible too... fresh fish with her homemade tartar and a pickle and cheese added... I've never had a fish sandwich with a pickle, but this was great! The bun was incredible too. They offer the typical assortment of wines, beers, and even the popular new alcohol canned drinks. The view, if you sit outside is incredible with views of the cliffs across the Jackson River. Service from the servers, all the way up to Jenny herself was great too. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Stellina, in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Stellina (which means "Little Star" in Italian) is a secretly hidden little bar within the very popular Italian Restaurant Fortunato, but with its own entrance through a door on the right of the restaurant. Its only indication of its name is a small letter board behind one of its front windows, stating its name and hours of operation. This bar was constructed with reclaimed wood from the Old Crow distillery and opened in December of 2016. Since then its gain a reputation as the ideal spot for hand-crafted cocktails in a cozy and intimate atmosphere. It seats only about 20 people, with 7 at the bar. Not that long ago it gained recognition by being featured in the New York Post as one of the world's best small bars. All that I can tell you about this place doesn't do justice to the experience of visiting the place for the very first time. After stepping inside, I was mesmerized by the simple yet effective, elegance of the establishment, complimented by the beautifully dressed young lady, server/bartender. Her elegant style and mysterious personality contributed to the character and ambiance of this one-of-a-kind relaxing place. The very hospitable young lady welcomed me and handed me the drink menu, while asking me if I also planned to dine there. I answered in the affirmative and asked her if they had any Mocktails. To my surprise, she pointed out that one side of the Drinks Menu were all non-alcoholic drinks, including mocktails, bottled mocktails, wine by the glass, and beers. I ordered one of the mocktails and by the end of my meal, I think I must have tried a few. She then brought me Fortunato's menu, and I ordered the Fritto Misto as appetizer and the Pork Milanese as my main entrée. I enjoyed both course immensely. A lady employee brought me the food from Fortunato's Restaurant through a door that led to the restroom area of Fortunato's Restaurant, pass the kitchen. For dessert, that Which I consider the "Grand Finale" of a wonderful fine dining experience, I ordered their Tiramisu and Hot Chocolate. They were absolutely mouthwatering. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to return in the near future.

My drink with Rittenhouse Rye bourbon was tasty, just not much of it price at $17 steep too! I also ordered a specialty hot rum drink with pumpkin spice at $10 that was amazing! The meatballs hit quickly and were devoured! So yummy! About 15 minutes later the main dropped and was huge! Really quality and flavorful for a vegetarian dish.
