This place is not a speakeasy but it's very easy to miss from the outside. This listening bar is located in the lobby of a boutique hotel called Hotel Refuge. The setting is quite intimate and cozy with dim lighting making it the perfect date night spot. I went on Valentine's weekend so it was a full house and seating is rather limited. There are about 4 seats at the bar, stools along the wall and a few tables for groups. The bartender explained that they showcase local artists artwork frequently and those photos/ paintings stay on display for two weeks and are available for purchase. The images were hung throughout the hallway of the hotel. There was a movie projector playing Love Jones as we listened to anti-love music since it was the day after Valentine's Day. Although we could still hear the music, it was a little noisy with so many groups conversing amongst themselves. The drinks were tasty and the staff worked great together tag teaming drink orders during the rush. The bar does not sell food but there is a Mexican restaurant in the back of the building. I liked that the crowd didn't necessarily patronize to one specific age group or type. It was a very diverse crowd.
How did I not know this place existed?! I'm newly obsessed because this place is such a vibe all around. Great cocktails, great music, dope decor, and chill atmosphere. It's the perfect place for a date night or small group outing. The music is loud enough to groove to, yet not too loud to where you can't have conversations. They have limited hours, so check before you go. 10/10 will be back!!
How dope is this spot? It's quaint and cute. The vibe is intimate, and the drinks are skrong. I had the Robinson augmented to be a bit sweeter, and it was delicious. It gave me a strong calm. The ambiance was dope. It's intimate and chic. You can have titillating convo and a great cocktail.
Talk about a vibe inside ! This is such a cool spot ! Definetly somewhere you would want to take a first date ! I love the concept of it being a listening bar & you can even bring your own vinyl . Lorem Ipsum is located inside of a hotel in the plaza Midwood area called Refugee . Inside is a very dim setting with relaxing music from Lo fi to Luther Vandross & all the great's. Theirs also an outside patio area . One thing I thought was very cool is the server brings your check in a cd case. I recommend anyone looking for grown laid back dates vibes this is the place to be.
My husband and I stopped by the other day for drinks before dinner and Loren Ipsum is a nice little cozy spot. It gives house party vibes where the lighting is moody and there's music playing loud enough to hear but not disrupt conversation. Plenty of seating options inside and outside although it is small inside. We ordered a few drinks to try and it was a mixed bag. Oldie - like an old fashion but calmer and just very good! (5/5) Gin salted - unfortunately tasted like herbal salted (high on the salted part!) water. I was not a fan and don't recommend. (1/5) High fall - sweet (not super sweet tho) tasty cocktail almost like honey. (4/5) Dark daisy - also not a fan. Wasn't terrible but not nearly as good as oldie and high fall. (2/5) Service was polite and helpful. The only issue that we had was that at first we were told that they were closing early for an event at 6:30 pm and if we wanted to, we could continue drinking on the patio. This was told by a female waiter. But then maybe 15 minutes later, another waiter (around 6:10ish) stopped by to repeat the same message but more so like okay you need to close out or move outside now. We were quite confused and didn't appreciate the mixed messages we were receiving. However the place is very new and we would stop by again as we did enjoy our experience before that incident occurred.

Music was laid back and more of a neo soul flow, loved it! Unique cocktail list, first choice was 'Dark Daisy' but it was out so we decided on 'Robinson' and 'In Salted'. The server was helpful with us making our decisions. Excited to see many people waiting to check on the location. Will definitely be visiting again!
What a cool spot! We went late - less than an hour before closing time but the staff were welcoming and friendly. It's an eclectic place with white painted brick walls and wicker trimmed furniture. There's also a nice patio area. They were showing video of a Frankie Beverly concert (without sound) and a SJ was spinning VINYL! You don't see or hear that very often. I had an old fashioned with ginger and rosemary - DELISH! My friends had The Lemon Pepper with tequila and The Jerk - a nonalcoholic (but she is so she added gin!) - NOBODY had complaints. I'll definitely be back!
This was a great listening bar it had a really chill vibe. This is a great place to just chill with friends if you don't feel like going home yet. I highlight for me was that they were playing soul train clips and I really love soul train it was a great background to watch and appreciate a part of the Culture.

Felt like I was in the mood for some good drinks, good company, and really good music, and the spot was able to deliver on all three. Located on Central, it's unassuming, quiet, very friendly, and a really good spot to relax. Enjoy some amazing drinks and fantastic music by the DJ spinning the wheel.
I finally got to check out Lorem Ipsum for a friends birthday a couple of weeks ago and it was a whole vibe. Being there felt like I was in my house, from the plants, to them playing Beverly Hills Cop on the projector and all of the Black artists on the walls. It was very refreshing!!! It's so rare to go to a business and see anything familiar so this was truly inspiring. We stayed for about 30 mins because we got there right before they closed. It was fun to explore the hotel rooms and just be in this dope energy. I didn't have a full cocktail, just sipped and tried a few of my friends. I can see this being a great date night spot, or some where to go to unwind and just catch the vibes. I wish it was bigger but it's a cute spot for sure!! I was super surprised about the parking lot in the back too. That has to be very helpful for them in Plaza Midwood area. Will definetly be back!! read more
So this place is very cool and very vibey. There are DJs and the projection is a really nice touch. The menu is small and drinks are interesting - I got something with sage in it and was good. The issues we faced were not having a reservation - the options online were wide open so we thought it was safe to show up - and had to wait a long time. In hindsight, I should've went ahead and made the reservation, so I'll take responsibility, but was disappointing for the experience to be so different than we expected. We were able to sit outside and waited for about 40 mins to get our table. Service was very slow. It just felt like they were really understaffed. We were there for probably 2ish hours and only got 1 drink (the one outside) as it was so hard to flag down our waitress, etc. I suspect that this place, having recently received awards / gone viral, is a victim of a huge influx of people stopping by. I wanted to love it! I'd go back during off hours and definitely make a reservation. The vibe was really cool, and the music was great. Parking is questionable, there's a gravel lot that is shared with the restaurant next door. We parked on the street, was unclear if they tow there or not. read more
I had the pleasure to drop in Saturday evening after dinner. I'd heard good thing about Lorem and had made a reservation earlier in the week (highly recommend! as this is a small and popular venue. To ensure a spot, book a spot.) You're allowed roughly an 1hr 15 minutes to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to enjoy the listening experience. I was seated in a comfortable chair next to another couple where I enjoyed a glass of wine, music, and older film. (I even managed to get a bit of outlining done for my next book!) I absolutely loved my experience with Lorem Ipsum. The staff was kind and attentive, the lighting dim and inviting, and the space comfortable. I'll definitely be returning. This is a great spot for dates or a friendly night out. Even attending by myself was enjoyable. 10/10 recommend. read more

Loren Ipsum was definitely a vibe. They don't serve food but they had a variety of cocktails. The ambience was warm, cozy and intimate. Definitely perfect for a date night. They had severs walking around who were attentive. read more

If you're looking for a nice, low key spot to vibe at in Charlotte, this is a place that you should try. The ambiance is very moody; low lighting, chill music and a video of some sort projected onto the wall. They have a drink menu with prices ranging from 10-16$, and I can say that the mixed drinks are pretty strong. They do have an outdoor patio, but because I went on a cold night I didn't go out there. I'm sure the music does filter out there, but I can't say for sure. Although it's a small space, it makes for a more intimate setting if you're looking to get away from the club scene and section buying lol. It's a great spot to go on a date night, or for a night out with your friends. 10/10 would recommend! read more

Met up with my girls at Lorem Ipsum.bar on Friday. We instantly loved the atmosphere of this listening bar. The listening bar is the perfect before the event or after the brunch spot. It is a great middle ground for those who want to step out with friends for a picturesque night out. They even have alcohol free cocktails! The music was at a volume that filled the room but it didn't kill the conversations. No food on the menu yet. This is my new favorite spot to bring friends from out of town to show them Charlotte is cooler than they think. There is no food, it's a chill cocktail spot with a variety of listening and visual experiences. I've been twice now and once music was playing and a movie of a concert was up on the projector, the other time it was a black 70s movie and a live dj and I didn't want to leave for dinner it was so good. The presentation of checks is amazing in cd cases which is also a nice touch. read more

Make sure you use the address vs name or you'll end up in South Carolina! After rolling all the way out there, the trip was soooo worth it! JUST the vibe these California visitors were looking for. Lorem Ipsum was the relaxed, grown and sexy vibe that we needed for my friend's 45th birthday. Small and intimate, the bar doesn't have a lot of space, but it's comfortable and chill. The timeless classic "Coming to America" was being shown from a projector, while the DJ was playing a mix of old school and new school R&B. The drinks were strong, and the servers were extremely attentive. At first, I thought it was too low key for my friend after dinner - she reminded me "this is perfect! We're getting old!" I'll definitely head back to Lorem Ipsum, but until then happy eating! read more

Quietly tucked away in the lobby of the chic but unassuming Hotel Refuge, Lorem Ipsum is the perfect respite from the "busyness" of Plaza Midwood during the day or a chill spot to hideaway by yourself or to bring a (very special) date at night. Chill vibe. Minimalist but intentional decor. Terrific music (which the owner, mixologist Justin Hazelton, took a hands on approach to at the turntables)--a delightful mix of r&b, funk, soul & jazz. And of course, the drinks are fantastic as well. I mean...it's a cocktail bar. I had the "In Salted" which is spiritless but I asked the mixologist to add rosé. The bathroom for patrons is actually located inside the fully furnished Room One of the handful of hotel rooms. Love that. Plus episodes of the sitcom Martin were playing on the wall! This place is so dope, I low key kinda didn't even want to review it. Lol! But keeping it a secret would be an insult to this unique concept. read more

This spot holds about 30-45 seats with the option to sit at the bar, at a tab, outside, or on a love seats for more of a coffee shop type vibe. Lorem Ipsum merges all the things you love about Charlotte area bars into one spot - friendly/amazing bartenders, cozy atmosphere, and great music (Shazammed at least 10 songs while there!). The music was a mix of old school r&b, lo-fi jazz, and soul. The drink menu has something for everyone. While there, I had their "oldie" and the "in salted". Lorem Ipsum will definitely be added to my rotation and I look forward to returning soon. read more
