Best. Chiropractor. Ever. Dr Lori's been patching up and realigning our family for decades. She's great with kids and helped our gymnast daughter recover from several childhood injuries as well as a car accident. Dr Lori's been an immense help with my husband's and my work related/aging related pains. He's a location sound engineer (rough on the body!) and I have chronic, physical, writing related issues. She's currently helping me heal correctly from an accidental tackling at a hard core punk show. I'm a believer. Who would have someone in their 30's would benefit from a chiropractor? I never did, but after visiting with dr. Portnoy - she changed my perspective. I do yoga, am fairly fit, but being hunched over at a desk and on my phone all day probably does alter my spine. Who knew? By using evidence based x rays and education, her treatment plan absolutely makes sense. I leave feeling more balanced and aligned and she does a great job explaining what she's doing and why. With over 30 years of experience she knows what to look for and what to do. I think it's better than a young chiropractor with less experience. For those looking for a new chiropractor you can't go wrong here. Scheduling and visits are efficient, the staff is friendly, and you begin each visit with a lumbar stretch which I think is glorious in itself. I am so glad I found Dr. Portnoy. I just moved to Chicago, and there is always the stress of finding new doctors when you move. I came here through a friend's recommendation and I'm glad I did. First off, the office is conveniently located right next to the Armitage stop on the Brown Line. The office staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and it seems I can always get an appointment even when it's busy, which is very important when it comes to chiropractors, because often times, you are visiting them in an emergency situation. The prices are reasonable if you have no insurance, and she is very flexible regarding payments (unlike most healthcare facilities that want a payment before your appointment). I suffer from upper back and neck pain. The moment I stepped in for a health history and x-rays, I knew I had come to the right place. Dr. Portnoy explained why I was having pain and how she was going to help me. She was very compassionate and would empathize with me. That made me feel comfortable and made me trust her right away. Over a few weeks, I began to notice a difference. My spine thanks Dr. Portnoy! Dr. Portnoy is a very friendly person with a very caring attitude. She is the only chiropractor I trust my spine with. Unfortunately, I had to move out of state for school, but whenever I go back to the area I make sure I stop to see her. The front staff is also very friendly and welcoming. I could not have been happier after my first visit! I saw Lisa. I had never seen a chiropractor before so had no idea what expect, so for all my fellow chiro newbies I'll break it down as to how awesome Lisa's process was. She started by asking questions about my back pain, activity levels, etc. and truly showed attention to detail. She then did a physical exam, x-rays, and had me lay on a massage bed while my x-rays processed. After getting the x-rays back she showed me all of the areas she'd like to improve in layman's terms so I knew exactly what to expect. After she assessed and explained it all, she gave me an adjustment. Amazing. The office staff was so friendly and accommodating. Yessenia helped me coordinate my appointment and was super friendly during check in/check out. It's been 5 days since my appointment and I'm amazed at how much better I feel! I needed a change in care after my previous chiropractor did the same 1 minute adjustment every appointment with no improvement. I was recommended to Dr Portnoy by a coworker and she was exactly what I needed. She listens, evaluates and delivers. She didn't push any unnecessary treatments, PT or oils to alleviate pain or rack up the bill, just provided personalized care and pertinent information. I have had a couple questionable adjustments while Dr Portnoy was out, but it was easily remedied by speaking with the desk staff, who are super helpful, to ensure she was available. Dear Chicagoans - If you are familiar with the adjustment techniques that most chiropractors use, then this office is not for you. The adjustments at this office take place on a pneumatic bench that thrusts your pelvic region up over and over again while you are lying face down -- there is not the "usual" or "normal" adjustments of lying on each of one's sides, face down, and having your spine and neck checked and adjusted. I found the technique used in this office not be not as effective as other chiropractors I've been to, all of which used the traditional adjustment techniques. I also did not especially like the electromagnetic "therapy" I received prior to seeing the chiropractor. It was totally ineffective and unnecessary. It seemed as though the only purpose it actually served was to add more money to my bill. Last but not least, I would like to mention that I did not especially like the doctor all that much either. It seemed as though this was the type of office that wanted to see as many individuals per day as they possibly could. Additionally, the doctor's personal attention and interest in me was severely lacking, not to mention her pushy personality to encourage me to keep coming back for multiple treatments. I started going religiously when I was pregnant and it was the best thing i could have done for myself while preggo. With the baby shifting my bits and pieces i was super sore and had trouble sleeping...Dr. Portnoy helped me so much that by the end of my 3rd trimester i was ready to go :) Post-natal adjustments and massages have also helped my back while breastfeeding...highly highly recommend her and her wonderful staff. Dr Portnoy is wonderful! I discovered her via a groupon but have become a devotee. When I wanted to continue w treatments and my insurance would not pay she was genuinely more interested im my getting the treatment that I needed than getting her money. I was really impressed with that. I had been to one chiropracter who wanted me to pay for 50 visits up front, this for a discount which was miniscule. The warm and caring atmoshere in the office is therapeutic in and of itself, from Dr Portnoy and her wonderful office staff. I met Dr. Portnoy through her then-husband, Brad Barrett in the mid-1980's when we both worked for Freese & Friends (a commercial film production company) located on Wells St. in Chicago. She diligently worked a painful partially herniated disc back into place in my spine. When I lost my first baby, Dashiell Patrick (stillborn), in a terrible accident in 1988, she treated me, a fact which I credit with the miracle of healing I experienced. Through the years, I have kept in touch with her. While my children and I are still suffering from back injuries due to being rear-ended in a car accident, she has come through like a champ!
