This location is the "McDonalds" version of Los Agaves, but the food is still very excellent! Los Agaves never disappoints no matter what form. The order line is a bit awkward as it wraps around the store and the salsa bar is also a bit in the way. Seating is always a mad dash. Chips come so fast here!! And shortly after you even sit down, your main food arrives hot and delicious!! It's always hard to choose what to get, because everything is basically the same thing, just in different forms. I'm not sure this location was the best choice. Convenient spot, but seems to be too small. This place gets overcrowded and the lines are often long. There should be a separate line for pickup orders. They should buy the building next door (that sub-par sushi joint that is still open for some reason) and expand. Disappointed with my experience today I asked for chips twice and all the other tables had chips at their table and when our food was brought out no utensils. The cashier at the counter was nice and the homemade tortillas were good, their beans could of used salt. This location is ok but I would recommend one of their other locations. read more

This is my favorite place when I come to UCSB. Even when I say I want to try new restaurants, I always find myself driving back here. You order at the counter and then grab a number to wait for your food but while you do, they come by to drop off a huge basket of chips. My favorite thing about this place is the huge salsa bar they have with a fantastic variety! Anything you're feeling, they probably will have it. My go to meals are the fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and poblano chili with either shrimp or chicken. Honestly can't go wrong with any of them! Everything is super fresh and made to order so it comes out pipping hot. To be fair, I'm comparing dozens of good meals here to one superb meal at their downtown sister location. The food here is good, but a bit lacking in flavor. My latest patronage was a delivery order since we're all staying inside these days. Food was a bit lukewarm when it arrived and the beans were blander than imaginable. I definitely could get more food and more flavor at Freebirds or another local spot. Service is always great despite the fact that they're more often than not, packed every night of the week. A cute little seating area outside as well. If you're willing to drive to the downtown location, I'd recommend it. Even though it was Taco Tuesday tonight ... I decided to try their Molcajetes (A traditional Mexican Mortar and Pestle used for grinding spices and grains) that the homemade salsa base is mixed with grilled nopal, chorizo, Monterrey jack cheese, grilled cambray onion, and avocado. I chose Chicken of the shrimp, steak or sea and land options and cubed chucks of chicken breast were plentiful and huge and grilled and still very tender and not tough or over cooked. The served with corn tortillas all for $15.75 I also had a bottle of Tecate with their complimentary basket full of fresh chips and a few visits to their homemade salsas bar. I should have brought along a friend because there was definitely enough for two (2) to be satisfactorily full. It was prepared and tasted just like I was whisked away and served in Mexico .... very authentic and savory flavors of being cooked for hours. The spices were well balanced and had just the right acidity to leave a little tangy sensation on your pallet urging you to quickly dip in for another taste. After a few spoon fulls and nibbles of the tortillas, I was glad that I hadn't gone with the standard Tacos on a Taco Tuesday tonight.
