After checking out UCSB we were craving tacos. I checked yelp for shrimp tacos and found this place. It did not disappoint. Convenient location/parking. Nice indoor and outdoor seating. Clearly a busy/popular place but we were able to place our order after a few minutes wait and the food was fairly quick to arrive. We had the shrimp taco plate which came with rice and beans. The tacos were excellent and filling. Shrimp was seasoned and cooked well. We also had the carne asada taco - one taco was a good size and pretty filling. I really love the salsa bar with a variety of salsas to choose from. I had the Tacos Vallarta, and the tampiquena. The food is great and the service is awesome. Shrimp was succulent, plump and juicy. I think this is a great spot for locals as it was recommended to me by a local co-worker when I was visiting town. Pricing is slightly higher than what I'm used to outside of Santa Barbara area but pretty standard in the local communities after I've been here for two weeks. You'll find a variety of options to choose from and I can assure that you won't go wrong with any of them. My go-to items are the Sopes, Enchiladas Suizas, and the Sea and Earth Molcajete. Yum. The molcajete is a chunky, fresh soup dish which I'd actually compare more to a bowl of salsa. It's loaded with meat, seafood and veggies, and is served piping hot (make sure to NOT touch the bowl!). So good. There are a few locations around town but I would frequent this one the most as it was nearest to my workplace (pre-Covid). My favorite Mexican place in Goleta and possibly Santa Barbara. I mean there could be something better, but I am quite preoccupied spending time and Tuesdays here. I mention Tuesdays because of their Taco Tuesday special offer with street tacos at cheaper prices. You would think that since they are the less glorified and the simple version of their monstrous tacos, these street tacos are the bee's knees, and I could eat 10 of them! Of course, they have more to offer but I am a simple taco girl myself. Don't fret, I have tried different things and they are just as tasty. They offer local beers, house margaritas and even margaritas flights all for those 21+. Their enchiladas are delicious, I've even tried just a side enchilada one day (so I can heavily indulge in tacos), but even a side enchilada was great. Found Los Agaves on the first night I arrived in Santa Barbara/Goleta, and have been going back pretty much every week or so! Céviche is my favorite and the portion is huge! If your tummy cannot handle their big plates, I would recommend that you order it to-go, that way, everything will be fresh and the tortilla bowl (?) will stay crispy. I did try burritos, enchilada, and fajitas, and they're all wonderful! The salsa bar is also the reason I keep going back, there're 6-7 kinds of salsa offered that make me lose count of how many fresh and warm tortilla chips I've had. i don't usually crave Mexican food. i don't know why. maybe its because it's all over the place in LA? i'm not big on chain restaurant food, don't like heavy foods drenched in tons of sauce and cheese, but i do love street tacos... and a good margarita. so when i came to visit and help my daughter move between apartments in Goleta i found myself craving a margarita. after a move, isn't it the perfect thing??! and what goes better with that than tacos. i asked her for a food rec and she suggested Los Agaves. she said that all the locals rave about it. and since they did have tacos and margaritas on the menu, i was eager to check it out! wow... i was so blown away. this isn't the typical kind of Mexian food you expect. Mexican food is quite regional, like a lot of countries' foods are. so the food you get here has a lot of the basic Mexican food components but the flavors and textures are not always common to the typical tastes you're used to. one of their specialties is the Molcajete (which i keep promising i will have "next time"). it's a stewed entree, with your protein (or veggie) of choosing, and is served in a molcajete - a heavy stone platter, like what you see in terms of a mortar & pestle. looks outrageous... maybe I'll save it for her graduation! okay, so for the meals that i DID have: TACOS DEL MAR - fish or shrimp, i chose one of each. it came with rice, beans and a salad, which is dressed with a creamy mango salsa.. my daughter is in love with it. i thought it was tasty. the tacos were good and filling. the shrimp were large and plump, but i thought the fish was not as fresh as it could have been. ENCHILADAS GUADALAJARA - one beef and one chicken. yes, they look like your typical enchiladas, but taste-wise??!! blow your mouth away... the green sauce that is drizzled with sour cream? not you're typical salsa verde type. it's got a bang of flavor, the cumin is very evident, and such a delicious melding of flavors... if i could just bottle up some of that sauce i would have it on my rice, eggs.. omg, it's so amazing. MARGARITA WITH AGAVE WINE - yummerzzz!! second meal here: QUESADILLA - i ordered this because i was sharing it with my son (yes, picky!). we had it with chicken.. it was so delicious and generous in portion. it was enough to share with my daughters too, and we were all full. chicken was chunky, and juicy. BURRITO MOJADO - that means "wet", ie. drenched with red sauce! - daughter #1 had it with beef, which was very tender and flavorful. also generous in size, plenty to share and even have left over. CEVICHE TOSTADA - oh my, this ceviche is so fresh, and the chunks of fish so meaty! flavors are on point, topped with slices of avocado. also very generous, tons to share and make everybody HAPPY!! daughter #2's favorite thing here. QUESADILLA DE FLOR DE CALABASA - this is the 2nd of their quesadilla options (just FYI, they have a 3rd, which interestingly, comes in a puffy tortilla). it's basically a squash blossom quesadilla. this came out looking more like a tostada topped with sautéed veggies, pico de gallo, cheese and a sour cream drizzle. it could have been a meal in itself for me, since i didn't expected it to fill up an entire plate. what i did like about it was the puffy tortilla shell it was served on. couldn't really taste or see much of the squash blossoms, especially since we sat outdoors in the dimly lit patio. but it definitely makes for a light veggie meal. SALSAS - nice salsa bar, serve yourself. my favorite one is the AVOCADO SALSA. all i need for my meal here, nothing more. so delicious. light, creamy, all flavors on par. you are served with fresh, crispy chips as you arrive... just the thing to get you in the mood for that margarita, and those salsas! with the exception of that one fish taco, everything we have had here has been fresh and delicious. would recommend it for anyone visiting the area. they also have locations in Santa Barbara if you happen to be in the downtown area. service? it was attentive professionally.. and in terms of flirting with my daughter, yes that too. that part we weren't too excited about. but food came out fairly promptly and there is abundant outdoor seating. it's perfect for the easy breezy Santa Barbara air, day or night, especially in the summer! definitely looking forward to more visits while my daughter is at UCSB. maybe even perhaps her graduation dinner here? yes, it's a possibility! read more

I am a huge, huge fan of Los Agaves. I used to visit their first location on Milpas for my treasured chicken chimichanaga and dealt with that tiny parking lot around back and limited street parking. Then they opened the location on De La Vina, which was closer but still had parking issues. Now- finally- Carlos Luna, the owner, has opened up a location within a few blissful minutes of me. Camino Real has plenty of parking! It's on my drive home from work! It's nearby to all the stores I run weekend errands at! Sweet baby Jesus, have mercy on my waistline. My first meal at this new location was the agaves burrito. My coworker recommended it, and while I'm not a huge fan of seafood, this burrito was awesome. The chipotle sauce on it provides just enough of a kick. The burrito is accompanied by their yummy Mexican rice, and a salad. You can opt out of the salad and get it with extra rice or a side of beans, if you don't like salad. The burrito is quite large and provided me with leftovers for another meal as usual. I ordered the sea and earth molcajetes the next day. Now, this had too much spice for me so I didn't eat all of it. The serving was still very generous and it would have lasted two meals. My big beef with Los Agaves? There is no separate line or register for picking up to-go orders. The line to order & pay is usually very long with indecisive families looking at menu's. I always order to-go. My main goal is to get my food and get the hell out of there (I don't like crowds or most other people, to be honest). Also, the prices have risen. Over the past opening weekend- when I visited three times, ahem- I was charged more than the advertised price for each item. The printed menus and the website are out of date and need to be updated. Definitely a plan of this place. This was a second restaurant my cousin recommended! Since I am here for a work trip, my coworkers and I decided to come by here for dinner. MAN WAS IT PACKED! We also came on a good day (Taco Tuesday). They had 3 different crispy tacos and multiple types of regular "suave" tacos. I got 2 crispy pollos with a side of Spanish rice and a Lagunitas IPA. My beer came out first, YASSSSSS!, and then my tacos came out about 10 mins after. While waiting, they also bring out chips to you. There's an open salsa bar with a huge variety of different types of salsas on deck. Once my tacos came out, I was so excited to try it! I love crispy tacos like these! I make them myself at home, but with beef. While eating, their tacos had the perfect crunch AND IT WAS NOT GREASY AT ALL. I was very surprised! That was definitely a plus for me! With the salsa in my taco, I take a bite. Then I get a swig of the IPA.....PERFECTION! If you are ever in the area, you NEED TO COME HERE! It was delicious! Parking: Very spacious lot/ plaza. Food: I ordered the chimichanga with chicken and beef. Asked for no beans but they added them anyway. The meat is seasoned nicely and remained juicy. Food is great, no question about it. However, I was disappointed with the service. Last month, I ordered three tacos (Taco Tuesdays), side of salad and side of pinto beans. I was charged $8.85 for 3 tacos, $4.50 for the pinto beans and $5.00 for the salad. The total cost was $18.35 ($19.77 with the tax). The menu price for the salad is $4.50 and pinto beans is $3.95. Why was I charged more than the menu price? also, I wasn't even offered a three item combo price which would have been much cheaper. read more
