When you are driving on this area of the interstate looking for a place to eat--there isn't much around. We were all craving Mexican and I was glad to see the good reviews on Yelp. Yes, it doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, it is clean and bigger than you would expect. The menu is huge and it was hard to make a decision. Chips and salsa were fine. We were starving though. They do have excellent guacamole, which appears to be homemade and is inexpensive for the serving size. My daughter got a ground beef enchilada, rice and beans. It looked (and tasted according to her) like your standard Mexican restaurant fare. She was satified. My son got the kids meal nachos which had ground beef and a white cheese dip on them. They were great. Loved the cheese dip flavor. Similar to something I've had in the past but haven't run across in Omaha. I got the beef fajitas. When the server (a young blonde woman) brought them out, she brought the sizzling meat, onions, peppers and tomatoes, and some wrapped tortillas. I asked for a plate to eat off of. When she brought it back, I asked if she would be bringing the sides. She said there are no sides. I told her yes, there is supposed to be a plate of cheese, sourcream, beans, etc. She said no. I asked her to go check. I then went and got a menu which confirmed that there should be a plate of sides. She acted very put off when I explained this to her. When she finally brought it, there was probably 1 tsp of shredded cheese, but 1/2 cup of sour cream. I did ask for a bit more cheese but was nearly done eating by the time I got it. Overall, the meal was good. We had been driving all day and were hungry and cranky. The service was fair and I was put off by the server's attitude. I think the place is pretty good but they need to train their servers. read more

Stuart Iowa was our first night's stop on our way from Indiana to New Mexico. Yelp led us to Los Altos and found the experience as good as the reviews. The restaurant was smallish but quaint, located approximately half of mile from the I80 toward downtown Stuart on the main road. The restaurant is casual. Inside was clean and tables/chairs/booths all in good shape. Staff is very friendly and helpful. On this occasion we needed to "carry out" and they were able to accommodate us. We had a cold beer while waiting for the food to be prepared and the food was delivered before we even finished. We ordered the Fajitas De Los Altos (for two). My only complaint is that it was way too much food. Despite eating our meal in our hotel room, the food was delicious and well packed for carry out. The chips and salsa that accompanied the meal were first rate. I was actually surprised to see chips and salsa on a "carry out" order. If we are ever in the area again, Los Altos would certainly be our first choice. read more

Great food, great staff, worth the 1/2 mile drive from I-80. We were travelling 14 hours east to Indiana and needed lunch. After reading a few quick reviews, we chose Los Altos. We were greeted and seated immediately, offered drinks to keep our 2 children happy, and chips while we waited for our food. Our lunch arrive within 10 minutes and was fantastic! I feel sorry for the people who stop at McDonalds or Olive Garden when traveling (or even at home). Stop and try a local restaurant... support a family, not shareholders. read more

This is a little culinary oasis in an Iowan prairie. Stopped here on a cross-country trek. The menu is expansive, VERY affordable, and the help helpful. Food was cooked perfectly and gluten-free options for my sister. I asked for a burrito to go for the morrow's ride and they obliged my request of half refried beans and half potatoes..and they threw in some chips and salsa gratis, which they didn't have to do. (Wine selection...for sis...was limited, but what Mexican restaurant has an expansive wine inventory to choose from?) I hope they succeed in such a small town. read more

While traveling from MN to AZ we checked Yelp to find a good place to eat around Des Moines. This place looked good but a little off the highway but we stopped anyway. WOW! It was so good!! Finally made it into the Stuart Los Altos! Been to the Greenfield location several times. The food at the Stuart location was just as good - the menu is identical. The place doesn't have a lot of seating but we came late for Friday and got right in. We usually drive by at normal dinner hours and the place is packed. Ugh....how is it that I have ordered a chimichanga from the Los Altos--specifying GROUND beef each time--and 5 times, out of 6, it arrives with shredded beef; however, when it came with GROUND beef once, it was only half and half. We were passing through on our way home after a 15 day trip to California. We stopped in Stuart, Iowa and Los Altos was recommended to us. It was by far the best meal that we'd had on the entire trip. The food is authentic Mexican cuisine. Everything is homemade. The service was excellent. This place was unreal. We stopped here with our kids between Omaha and Des Moines. Our kids have a short sit time when stopping for food on trips so we checked out their menu online and had our orders ready to go when they brought homemade chips and salsa to our table. Family friendly atmosphere and we were in and out in about 40 minutes. That's about fast food fast for us. And this was probably the best Mexican food I have ever had. Everyone at our table were very impressed with the food. Service was prompt and friendly without being overbearing, perfect for the family atmosphere. My house margarita was big, not from a box and not watered down but not exceptional. It was about what I expect from a Mexican restaurant of this price range, but the food was another step or two above par. It was a delightful surprise. There was only one other group when we visited so I can't speak to how this place is when busy, but most of their tables were set for six to ten, so I am guessing they know how to run a busy restaurant. My takeaway, why settle for fast food west of Des Moines when you can have possibly the best homemade Mexican food around. This place should be a destination! I'll be back for sure. read more

At Los Altos they have several selections for NON Mexican food eaters. We discovered this place on our way home through Iowa using the Yelp app. It deserves every positive review it received and here's another one to add to the collection. Our waiter was a possibly middle-aged man who spoke English as a second language quite well. He seemed genuinely glad to see us, though the place was busy enough with other customers. We were presented with the obligatory basket of fried tortilla chips and salsa. I enjoyed the salsa for it's reliance on cilantro as a flavor, instead of pure peppery heat. I had the chicken poblano with it's wilted spinach and creamy sauce cooked with, of course, poblano peppers. It was like nothing I've ever had before in a standard issue "Mexican restaurant". It was delicious and tasted of being made especially for me. My wife, who would really prefer to have one bite of everything on the menu, had a combination plate with chicken as the meat ingredient. It filled her up and made for lunch for the both of us again the next day. Marvelous and tasty, too! Upon Yelps recommendations, my husband and I stopped here for lunch. I had enchilada Jalisco and my husband had burrito con asada. They were both delicious! I have never had spinach enchiladas and found that they are wonderful. The place is clean and has quick service and very reasonable prices. The sauces are not very spicy which was perfect for us. Great! Yea for Yelp! Based on the Yelp recommendation, we stopped. Don't judge it by the exterior. On our lunch, we found everything quite wonderful. I tried this place last year and I was not a fan, wasnt authenic and fresh enough for me.

On our way to Omaha and decided to try this restaurant. We saw a few trucks in the parking lot and thought that was a good sign. Immediately when we entered the door we were greeted, taken to a seat and asked our drink orders. We received a basket of chips and salsa and the waiter took our order. The food came very fast and was very good. We were in and out of there in no time and that's nice when you are traveling. We would recommend giving this place a try! read more
