Sorry, but this was not a good experience. Margaritas (the Cadillac) were warm and tasted like a cheap mixer with cheap tequila. Chips and queso tasted like Velveeta. My son ordered chicken fajita tacos, sounds weird and is weird. Was listed as a favorite.....he paid for it later that night. I ordered halibut fish tacos. The halibut was horribly overlooked, and were in no way tacos! No lettuce or crisp cabbage, no cheese or sauce. The small chunks of fish were in a large tortilla with fajita cooked vegetables that had no flavor. And how do you screw up Rice and beans? They did. Needless to say, we will not be going back. I'll be honest - I went because my son and I want to see the scene of the crime - a little while ago, some idiots with the truck until strap for the ATM out of the building and after a few comical mishaps ended up getting away with the unit... My son and I wanted to see - and WOW did we enjoy the food! The nachos were terrific, I love the way they slice jalapeños and the service was absolutely fantastic right from the start. Had the taquitos and my son had the burrito. Full! They were even very patient with my one year-old, and although he made a little bit of a mess they were very appreciative when we cleaned. Not just another hole-in-the-wall. It's THE hole. The location is nothing but odd, easy to miss amongst all the car shops on Dowling. The wait staff is a bit odd, but very friendly and helpful (even when I showed up 15 min prior to kitchen closing.) But the reason I go... the food. Oh deary! Delicious, extensive, large and quick... what more could you ask for? Oh, and did I mention how GOOD the food is? I've been to Los arcos before and enjoyed my experience. Tonight: 1. Cleared off our own table. 2. No hello or how are you. Just what do you what to drink? 3. Had to get up and ask for our own chips and salsa 4. Had to get up and ask for our own silverware 5. Burrito was luke warm at best and got a snippy attitude when informing the waiter and he actually tried to take ALL the food from the table just to be a brat. Shitty service and hit or miss food. So, I'm not entirely sure what the negative reviews are about with this restaurant. I've been going to Los Arcos, for many years now. And every time it's been great! Quick service, on the chips and salsa plus drinks. Food, usually comes quick after ordering and piping hot! The desserts, especially the flan are some of the best I've ever tasted. The servers even used to let me test out my rudimentary Spanish on them (I took Spanish 2 years in high school), and often politely corrected me when it would come out wrong. The only "bad," experience I've had here, was when I came in with another part of my family than I usually did and they seemed really busy and like they couldn't be bothered to properly attend to us. They weren't rude though, which is important, and I've never had service issues with their waitresses/waiters. Pretty great food, for Alaskan Mexican food. As far as Mexican food is concerned, I have not been able to find a better all around consistent place when it comes to quality and taste of the food than Los Arcos in the Anchorage area. The quality of service is also on par with the food. Very solid! I ordered the steak fajitas and was very impressed! It was served on a sizzling hot skillet, cooked to perfection and sided with a plate of beans and rice. I added a side of freshly grated cheese to top them off! :) I would have to say that if I had to complain about any aspect of the meal it would have to be the rice!! It was extremely dry and in my opinion not seasoned very well and lacked flavor. But even with that being the case I would still have to say it is miles above the Gallo's version. read more

This is one of the first places we went coming to Anchorage. We were looking for spicy Mexican food coming from Az. To our surprise Los Arcos gave us that and more. We did go on Cinco De Mayo so it was pretty packed. However our server was attentive and excellent. I got a Margarita which was poured very heavy (I couldn't finish it) but that's not a bad thing . I'm surprised to see such high reviews for Los Arcos because our own experience was not anything like what other reviewers had. My first tip that the food was lacking is that the portion size was huge. When a restaurant has overly large portions, it indicates that they are trying to compensate for the lack of quality. This was our experience. First, everyone that served us was friendly and helpful. However, we were served by three different people. They switched without reason or explanation. I would give the service four stars, since we were served by so many of the staff and they were all nice, but I take away some stars for the restaurant as a whole because I am not sure who our waiter/waitress actually ever was. Secondly, the food was tasteless, uncreative, poorly decorated, and simply awful. Maybe some people think the dish looks nice, but for me, it appeared as if someone had vomited on a plate and served it up. Additionally, I was bothered by finding meat gristle and onion skins in my dish. With the broth solidified on the top and edges of the plate and the extreme and evenly distributed heat of the entire plate, indicated to me that the dish had sat for some time most likely pre-prepared and/or sitting on a hot plate for sometime. Lastly, my tortillas looked as if they were purchased and not made in-house, like other restaurants. My wife's dish was also very bland and overly filled with cheese. Her enchiladas were soggy and simply gross. Our appetizer was very much on par with the overall quality of the food. I would not recommend this place as I experienced it and would encourage you to look for another restaurant. If my experience rarely happens, then the best case scenario here is that they are inconsistent, which, in my opinion, is almost as bad as being terrible all the way around. We happened to go to Los Arcos on a Friday night. We were met by a woman as we walked in who hardly spoke English--so it was a pretty good indication that the food was going to be very authentic. Although it was very busy, we got chips and salsa right away, and the salsa was very very good. One mild and one hot, so you can mix them depending on how hot you like it. And it was very tasty. The entree was also very good. The best part was the entertainment. There was a man playing and singing a variety of authentic "south of the border" songs. He just played both piano and guitar and was very very talented. When he played guitar he strolled from table to table and it was very nice. It felt like we were on vacation. We bought a Savings Card through Service HS sports that offers discounts at restaurants. We've purchase these in years past and always get our moneys worth while supporting kids sports and local establishments. Los Arcos was on the list and we decided to check it out. The deal was buy one dinner get the 2nd one free, but we also needed to purchase two drinks as well. We ordered the two meals, a chimichanga for $19 and 2 enchiladas for $15. Drinks were $3.25 a piece with only one refill allowed and no refills on chips/salsa. That's not the standard that most Mexican restaurants go by, but oh well.... ate our meal. Was typical taste of what one would expect. Got the bill and it only had a $10 credit. I asked our server and he said "that's all the til allows them to do". I voiced my disproval, and he just said "sorry" and walked away, WOW, the $5 is no big deal, but they way they handled it, and didn't tell us in advance, leaves me not wanting to ever return as Los Arcos was very deceptive. They got us in with the coupon but really didn't do anything to try and make us want to return. Worse service ever I would not recommend going here. We ordered our food which took a lot longer than usually does. My friend ordered coffee the coffee was burned and the creamer was going bad. When ordered 2 fajita steak taco dinners when they got out they were both luke warm at that like they had been sitting for awhile. My friend told the lady that her meal was cold. The waitress then attempted to argue with her saying they weren't cold and they would not take them off. After she stood and argue she went to the back with a attitude I might add saying she needed to call the manger. Then after 10 mins or so she came back and put the check down and snatched the food that we weren't going to eat. She then comes back and starts to argue some more that she wouldn't have taken and out and spent a few more minutes arguing about it. I would never suggest coming to this place again. Use to LOVE this place! But the past four times I've been in here, I've said I'm never coming back. And I mean it this time! I guess if you put it in a glass with salt on the rim you can call it a margarita. Be prepared to wait a solid 35 mins for drinks to come from the bar and another 20+ mins on an appetizer. Seriously when the place is empty how long does it take to melt cheese on some chips? Apparently over 50 mins. And don't be shocked when your second "margarita" never shows up.... an hour and a half later. One of the 3 different people who "served" us was gracious enough to take the drink that never was off the bill, so kind, thank you! I don't know what people are raving about Jill for. She spends more time playing the disappearing act than anything else. Except for that one time, when she had her screaming, food throwing daughter with her. Yup she was carrying her child around going from table to table while the poor kiddo was throwing food and screaming her head off. Service is so horrible. I'd also check your bank statements if you use a credit card. I had to bring in my bank statement to prove they charged me for my check and someone else's check. And then they argued with me. Never even apologized nothing. And only refunded me the amount of the food, not the tip! It wasn't even my check!!!! Sounds too horrible to be true. A little "out of the way" Mexican Joint that really packs a punch when it comes to serving up some good home-style Mexican dishes! As I am with Chinese Food, my good friend Ross is with Mexican food.
