Pollos Asados is a hidden gem, I especially like their Pollo Entero - for $25 it's a great family…read moredinner takeout option; which includes a very flavorful, mesquite smoked whole chicken, a bunch of homemade tortillas, grilled serrano peppers, salsa and hearty pinto beans (cooked in some of the chicken drippings). It's a lot of bang for you buck, but worth noting that the grilled chicken is excellent. Don't order via doordash, they'll double the cost of everything - just call the restaurant directly. Also like their birria pizza - whenever we have to feed a crowd (school potluck, hosting a large party, etc) this place is a great way to go.

*3.5 stars* I just knew I had to try out Don Rafa's,…read moreMezquite Grilled Chicken plates, but I was waiting for over 30 minutes for six (6) tacos at another spot in Richmond. I opted for a Super Burrito de Pollo at Don Rafa prior to their cutoff/closing time. Their burrito did not disappoint! I loved the way it was wrapped securely and grilled to perfection. Though this spot is known for their chicken, I didn't really experience anything unique about this wrapped meal. It was delicious and tasted how it should be, but I was hoping the "star" of this meal would be their chicken. I ate my burrito immediately and it was served at a decent temp. Perhaps, I'll give Don Rafa a 2nd chance and order a half (or whole chicken). The Birria Pizza looked appetizing as well. Don Rafa is located inside of the Food Barn Market and reminds me of a Latino version of a Pacific Supermarket. The restaurant appears somewhat modern, tidy and spacious, while the rest of the market area seems outdated.

This is such a nice authentic neighborhood spot full of soul. The people working there are so…read morenice. However this dining room has no air conditioner and I was feeling like I was getting a heat stroke. The windows do not open. There's a small fan but I didn't feel the air. Best to take to go. The dining room is very small. My husband really enjoy his quesabirria. He said that there was a good amount of filling and strong good flavors. And since they ran out of tongue, they offered the beef cheek called cabeza. Surprisingly the cabeza was more tender than tongue. The tacos came with radishes and pickled onions. They have very good tasting homemade chips and one of the best salsas I've had in a restaurant. The red salsa is kind of spicy so it takes getting used to. The shrimp burrito 12.99 didn't have a lot of shrimp but didn't have a lot of cheese and sour cream. The flavor was good but I warned you that since the shrimp is coke with butter, this is the greasiest shrimp burrito you can possibly eat. The oil literally was coming out of the foil. So I think the lightest dish they have is their shrimp tacos which comes in a set of two for about 12.50. The shrimp tacos have vegetables in it and the shrimp is also cooked in butter as well. This place is very authentic so I have a feeling that they use lard in their beans. This is definitely not a place you would go if you were on a low fat diet. The restaurant plays very loud authentic Mexican music. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you want authentic food but definitely take it to go. Parking was not a problem. It's a quiet and clean neighborhood. Don't forget they take cash. No credit cards.

What made it even better: I met Tony, who came by and spent time sharing the story behind his cooking. I really appreciated the background, the humility, and how welcoming he was. Small place, but big hearts and real friendship. Food-wise, everything was excellent. The tacos were outstanding (lingua and beef "Ibarra"), and the burrito was exceptional too. I also tried a plate and it absolutely delivered. And the family salsa recipe? Next level -- it enhances everything. Highly recommended. I'll definitely be back.
