The sauces, seasoning and overall balance of the dishes were definitely the highlight of the meal. We ordered quite a few items including quesabirria, shrimp tacos, a burrito and birria ramen. The shrimp tacos were especially flavorful, topped with a creamy sauce that paired really well with the shrimp. The quesabirria tacos also had that nice crispy texture with the rich birria flavor that people look for. The restaurant itself is clean, organized and well set up, with outdoor seating available which is nice on a sunny day. It has a relaxed vibe where you can sit down with friends and enjoy your food without feeling rushed. The only thing I noticed across several of the dishes was that the portions of meat felt a little light compared to the tortilla or toppings. The flavor is absolutely there, but a slightly more generous portion of meat would make these dishes even better. Overall, solid spot with great flavor and a fun menu. Tacos El Tucan has gotten better since the first time I went when they opened, and I'm really glad I came back. This time we got the loaded carne asada fries and a shrimp taco, and both were super satisfying. The fries were definitely loaded up with toppings and the carne asada had great flavor. The shrimp taco was also a win, fresh, well-seasoned, and not skimpy on the shrimp! Overall, the quality feels noticeably improved, and the food really hit the spot. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is the logistics. Parking is tight with a tiny lot that's maybe 8 spaces, and there's no indoor seating, just an outdoor patio. It also seems like there's almost always a line, and you should expect a bit of a wait for your food. Still, if you're okay with a little patience (and maybe parking on the street), it's worth it. 4 stars for delicious food and a clear step up from their early days, just come prepared for the crowd. read more

My wife was craving a burrito for dinner and I have had this spot bookmarked for awhile. It did not disappoint. The burritos were big and flavorful. We both got adobada (al pastor) with pineapple and crispy cheese. Mine was a super burrito and my wife got the San Diego style. They were both delicious. Their salsas were tasty and their curtido was extremely fresh. We are fat kids at heart and also tried carne asada and grilled chicken tacos which I liked, but my wife found a bit dry. The restaurant has no indoor seating, but the patio has heat lamps which made it slightly more inviting even though it was fairly dark. The service was extremely friendly and fast. Got the super burrito with shrimp and refried beans minus the guac, grilled in butter (no extra cost). It was so yummy, large in size and generously filled with tasty ingredients. The shrimp juicy and flavorful, the veggies fresh, even the superior quality of the beans noticeable, not to mention the sauce which goes so well with the shrimp, delish! This establishment delivers on a great product and service, and puts effort into providing a positive experience for guests. El Tucán isn't your traditional, authentic Mexican restaurant. While it is Mexican-inspired, the food is very Americanized, so it's best to keep expectations realistic. The food itself is good and well prepared, just not geared toward bold or traditional flavors. I ordered the chicken burrito bowl, which was filling and enjoyable. I also asked for the spiciest salsa they had, and it wasn't spicy at all, which was disappointing. They do get really busy, but you're rarely going to see people coming here for truly authentic Mexican flavors, it clearly caters to a more mainstream crowd. OMG! The food was SO good! We came here late night around 11:30 to grab a bite. It was my first time but my friends all are returning customers. The said that the line is typically long and depending on the time you go there can be a long wait. The place MUST be a popular hot spot---and that it is! The best tacos I've had in the east bay! I ordered a carne asada red taco, and an adobada (al pastor) regular taco. Both had great flavor. I preferred the adobada meat due to it's crispy texture, but enjoyed the red taco flavor and fillings! We've been going to other taco places around the area, and we thought the quality of those were starting to going down, so we decided to come try the tacos here and SO glad we did. Got the simple carne asada and adobada tacos. Meat and tortillas were fresh. Sauce was perfect. Down to the salt on the Serrano peppers...all the flavor profiles were just amazing. (Might be top 5) could have gone without the side salsas. The salsa/guacamole that comes on the tacos already is good enough. Service was quick - despite how busy it started getting. I used to order from here fairly often when the place first opened. It was great food, and now that I've moved back into the area I wanted to eat from here again after not having them for so long. I ordered the abodaba al pastor tucán fries and within a couple hours i immediately got sick and threw it all up. I got food poisoning! Stopped here on the way back from kids' sporting event. Found it via the reviews and oh my, it didn't disappoint. The tortillas were fresh. We had carnitas, carne asada, pollo Adobe and camarones and all were well seasoned and tender. The salsa was the perfect touch tangy topping. I appreciated that they had agua fresca flavors we don't often see. We ended up getting melon. The cashier is inside a little window. We ate there a few days ago, and it was fantastic. We stumbled in on the grand opening. It was so good that I went back last night with a group of friends and was disappointed with the service. Food was fantastic, but it was hard to find the server and took forever to get anything. Right from the beginning we walked in and must've been standing at the front for 10 minutes before the host came up to ask if we wanted a table. After my boyfriend tried their tacos last week and raved about them, I decided to join him this time to see for myself. I ordered the shrimp taco, which was great. The homemade tortillas were fresh, and the chipotle sauce was creamy, spicy, and delicious. I did find it interesting that the shrimp wasn't battered or fried, but it still worked well. I also tried the Cali burrito, which was tasty, though I would have preferred more pico de gallo and guacamole. Deep in Richmond on the way to the airport we decided to stop by and we were glad we did. They have their own parking lot which makes it nice. You order through the window like infront of the store. They do have outdoor seating only option but we took ours to go. Lady that ook our order was nice and patient as we figure out what to try. I love Tucán! We live down the street, so it's usually our go to. We always get super burritos de asada. They fry cheese on the inside of the tortilla and it really makes a difference in flavor. I've deviated from the burritos and have gotten nachos and the cheesy tacos before. Both are delicious! Cheesy tacos are slightly oily, but what do you expect from frying cheese hard? Only negative is that they don't serve black beans. But the Pinto and refried beans are still good. No "indoor dining" which is why we usually order to go. Tuesday Wednesdays and Thursdays is the worst time to eat at this restaurant. I've tried it on a Tuesday. The shredded chicken was dry and tough. I tried it on a Wednesday. They gave us a few shreds of shredded chicken as though it appeared to be none and a large amount of core from the romaine lettuce. Which is considered garbage at restaurants.It was a young man prepping the dish he works with an older lady on Wednesdays. I decided to order takeout in person after struggling to get through on the phone, and I ended up waiting about 30 minutes. Not sure why it took so long, especially since it wasn't that busy when I arrived. I did overhear staff taking phone orders, so maybe they were busy. For my order, I got the red burrito with birria and nachos with carne asada. The birria was definitely the highlight, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Unfortunately, the red tortilla didn't really stand out and tasted pretty much like a regular tortilla. The burrito was generously stuffed with meat, rice, and beans, which I appreciated. The nachos, however, was a disappointment. The chips were smothered in toppings to the point of being soggy, making them impossible to separate without creating a mess. The majority of the topping was sour cream, and there was a bit of meat and guac to round it out. Not the nacho experience I was hoping for. On the positive side, they have their own parking lot and outdoor seating, which is a nice touch.
