Los Paisanos is my FAVORITE place to eat in Somerville! All of the food is authentic, delicious, and reasonably priced! My favorite dishes are Tacos de Pascado (Fish Tacos) and the Pupusas which are always made fresh to order and I travel from Back Bay to Somerville to eat here, that's how awesome the food is! The restaurant is very clean, great service, there is always plenty of comfortable seating, and the atmosphere works for both casual eating or a casual date, groups, and is family friendly. (I personally prefer the food here to the food at Taco Loco just my personal opinion) read more

You need to try their Pupusas. I recommend either the Loroco or Ayote. I have gotten both delivery and dine in from this restaurant and it has been phenomenal. The service is also excellent. One of the new owners, Marcos, is a real gem of a human. read more

Ordered delivery via Grubhub. Was late, though not as bad as some reviewers have experienced. Food was very fatty/greasy. One of my friends half joked that "they went a little heavy on the lard" in the tamales. I mean, I guess some people like that, but not us. Oh, and neither here nor there, but a lot of the appetizers are almost big/heavy enough to be an entry on their own. Also, my "sopa de pollo" didn't exactly match the, admittedly sparse, description. It says "Chicken soup. Served with rice and 2 tortillas." What I got was a tub of broth with LARGE chunks of potato (like half a potato each) and carrot, and a piece of corn on the cob, and on the side was tortillas, rice, a piece of fried chicken on the bone, and also a salad (what? not even mentioned! also, as poor quality as past reviewers have shown with iceberg lettuce, etc.). So maybe more like "pollo y sopa" or chicken and soup. A good meal for some I'm sure, but not what I was looking for. All in all, it was edible, but definitely not our preference so we won't be ordering here again. I'd advise others if you really want to try this place go in person, since most of the positive reviews seem to be walk-ins. Maybe if you find you like their food you can then venture into delivery, but make sure you order well ahead of time because they take a while. read more

I was craving comfort food and needed tostones. My husband found this place and ordered us dinner (with tostones of course). We got: shrimp fajitas, steak burrito, and 2 orders of tostones. The delivery was surprisingly quick (checkout to front door was half an hour). Food was packaged well to avoid leaking and the portions were a really good size. Tostones were just like grandma's! The shrimp were perfectly cooked! The burrito was filling and the chips were crispy and salty. The beans were perfect (not watery like the other reviews said). We have enough for leftovers tomorrow too. read more

Great Pupusas, Sopas, y Tipico Montanero = Oh My!! I typically don't go to places that I often see empty as I take it as a bad sign, but I decided to give this place a try since it's the closest restaurant to me. It's also one of the few places that open early enough so I had a breakfast burrito after an early gym session for protein. It wasn't chipotle sized but it was tasty and inspired me to try their other dishes. Since that day many months ago, I've eaten there at least once every 2 weeks and here are the results: 1. The family that owns and runs the restaurant are Salvadorian, therefore their best dishes are the ones that have roots there. You're setting yourself up for failure expecting a legit Mexican style burrito. That's like ordering sushi at a Asian fusion restaurant and expecting it to be great. Not happening... 2. The family and servers are super friendly, sweet, and accommodating. I always enjoy talking with them about the history behind certain dishes, learning about their culture, and learning about food differences between different South American countries. Foods: Pupusas: They're very tasty and go well with the sliced and pickled vegetables and Pupusas sauce. They're not dry nor too moist and 2 are just the right amount for lunch. Plus you cant beat the $2.50 price point for each one. Sopas: rich, hearty and delicious. Carrots, potatoes, yam varietals, with minced onion and herbs, tortillas, and a side of rice. It all comes together regardless if you choose the beef or chicken sopas that I've tried. Just note that the beef makes the broth a little more fatty since the tender meat is still on the bone in the soup. I would say the chicken broth is "cleaner" and doesn't overpower the ingredients as much as the beef but you can definitely still taste the chicken. Great soups that have you covered depending on how you feel that particular day. haha Tipico Montanero: Don't get it unless you've got a big appetite or you intend to have it for the next day as well. It's a lot of food: Steak, fried egg, thick cut fried bacon/pork, plantains, churrizo, rice, melty beans and salad. Very filling with the great mix of sweet, savory, and salty flavors and fats. The meats were a little bit drier or overcooked than I would have liked, but it wasn't an issue. Tacos: Coming from California I love tacos. Of all the restaurants on Broadway in East somerville that i've tried, this restaurants have the best quality meat. The steak is juicy and not rubbery to chew, therefore tender. The chicken is moist and flavorful. The Al pastor is buttery, spicy and sinful. This was the biggest surprise and hidden secret about this place. Try them!! The restaurant itself is very nice. There are enormous windows to enjoy the outside while you eat, several Tv's with Spanish speaking content (movies, futbol, and Spanish Entertainment tonight(?)). There's a large antique jukebox that is sometimes on when i'm there that plays wonderful music. I haven't tried messing with it because I wouldn't dare try to pick from songs I know nothing about. There are plenty of tables, chair and space with nice decor and tv's on the walls. My only gripe is that there's a large pipe in the middle of the room and the ceiling is lower than I'd like, but hey! we're in Boston so I've seen weirder and more dumbfounding architecture in too many places to count so no problema. BOTTOMLINE: IF YOU GO IN EXPECTING WHAT THIS PLACE IS NOT, YOU'LL BE DISAPPOINTED. TL:DR Waited 2:30 hours for a messed up order. Unwanted chicken tacos subpar. I placed an order for 3 Fish tacos, 3 Res tacos, 3 carnitas tacos and 1 sopa de pollo, this was at 5:40. At 7:30, when my food had yet to arrive and I could no longer wait, I called and was told that my order hadn't been started. At around 8:00 pm I get a call telling me that they will be outside in 5-10 minutes with my food BUT they had messed up my order and got me chicken instead of res tacos and had made the fish tacos with mayonnaise instead of the usual. I was asked if this was ok but obviously after 2:30 hours I was hungry and just told them to give me the food. I've ordered from here a few times and never had this problem so this was very disappointing. Also don't order the chicken tacos. read more

I live in the neighborhood, and ate here only once sometime in the fall of '06. I love Mexican and Salvadorian food and am down for culinary adventures but I can't bring myself to go back. The one meal I had here was just totally gross, nothing good about it at all. Not that it made me sick or anything, it simply had all the wrong flavors and none of the right ones. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I only ate here once, and it may have been a bad day, or I may have ordered the wrong thing. And, I am notoriously spoiled when it comes to Mexican and Salvadorian food, having lived in San Francisco's Mission District for three years. But the meal I had was really bad. That, and the fact that the place tends to be the emptiest of all the Salvadorian joints in the neighborhood, keep me away. The few good reviews on here make me wonder if I should go back and give the place a second chance, and maybe I will. But I doubt it. read more

Ordered Los Paisanos through Foodler for the second time this evening. As we were eating the nachos, we saw melted holes all over the bottom of the plastic container...meaning somehow the plastic melted during our consumption which meant we had been eating plastic. The plastic surrounding the holes was brittle and the crunchiness could have easily been misconstrued as chips when munching. We are extremely concerned about having eaten plastic and will never order from here again. read more

Kind of a cross between Tacos Lupita and Taqueria Mexicana. I like pupusas that have a consistency closer to tortillas, with a rubbery cheese and a strong grill flavor. The pupusas at Los Paisanos have a consistency like polenta, fresh crumbly cheese, and no grill flavor. Not very appetizing to me. The chicken enchiladas were substantially better, but much too salty and not earthy enough or me to really enjoy. I did like the fresh cream, rice, and beans. There was a restaurant for sale sign outside. I would not make any special effort to try this restaurant. read more

The food arrived on time, but I had a dangerous issue with my order: I FOUND A 1.5" THIN PIECE OF METAL IN MY BEANS! I ate about 10 bites of the enchiladas before discovering the metal in my beans. Here's hoping that the enchiladas were metal-free. :( read more

Food is mediocre to sub par at best. Delivery within Somerville has taken over 80 minutes both times we've tried this place. Last time. Never again. Much better Mexican within walking distance. Burrito and quesadilla were very bland and underwhelming. Nachos reassembled a garden salad with chips. Tamales looked promising but under delivered. My best friend has Celiacs disease which in case you don't know means you absolutely cannot have gluten. A group of us got catering from here on New years eve. We called and made sure 3 times, reiterate, THREE TIMES that the food would absolutely be gluten free. They assured us it would be and so on we went. After the food was delivered we thought maybe it wasn't gluten free so we called once more to quadruple check and they said yes it was gluten free. After eating the food an employee informed us that none of the food was made gluten free. So my best friend spent ringing in the new year violently ill. No refund can make up for being so careless about people's lives. If you want taco Tuesday go elsewhere! read more

I have Celiac Disease which is a severe allergic reaction to gluten. My friends and I wanted to order catering from here for New Year's Eve, but weren't sure if they could adjust their meals for my gluten allergy, and some vegetarians in our group. My friend called them to see if they could cook gluten free and vegetarian. They called us back and confirmed. Then my friend put in an order and was VERY clear that we cannot have flour tortillas for the gluten free order. They assured her that everything was hand made and corn tortilla. She was on the phone confirming this with them for a very long time. We then got our food delivered. And it didn't look gluten free at all. So before we ate anything, we called them AGAIN to confirm that they didn't cook flour tortillas for the gluten free order. They reassured everything was handmade and corn tortilla. So I ate my portion. Then someone from the restaurant comes to our place after we have all eaten to let us know they didn't make any of it gluten free. This is very very serious. I do not recommend this restaurant in any way. We took great care to make sure our dinner would be for everyone, and we confirmed with the restaurant many times before we even ate. This is unacceptable. My health was put at risk, and we were very careful to notify them. As a restaurant you cannot be making mistakes like this. My New Year's Eve was ruined because I was very ill. And I will make sure that everyone I know never eats here again. read more

If you like Tacos Lupita, you'll like this little spot, too. Cute space, plastic tablecovers, Spanish video show going on the TV. Pretty sure that these folks are from El Salvador, too. Huge menu that I haven't gotten through yet, but in addition to pupusas and tacos and tortas, they have a variety of soups and entrees, plus breakfast that looks amazing. My last visit I had a rockin' good torta. On a small sub roll and not toasted like at lupitas - this didn't have as many ingredients either, but oh was it good. Steak torta with beans, shredded lettuce, tomato and lots of gravy that soaked into the bread. For $4, which you just can't beat. This reminds me..must go back soon. read more

Everything about this meal was a little odd. The tamales tasted like they were made with polenta instead of masa. Maybe that's a thing? I lived a great deal of my life in Utah and New Mexico, so maybe I'm just accustomed to different techniques? Otherwise they were a little bland but pleasant. I like polenta, just not when I'm ordering a tamale. The mole on the enchilada was decent. The refried beans were blended into a loose slurry. Not my thing. I went in with two coworkers around noon time and the place was very clean. We were quickly approached by the woman behind the counter and had our orders taken quickly. We got waters with out asking which was nice and also chips with a new to me salsa. The woman from before was honestly the best part. She was nice and I think gave off an excellent aura. I have only eaten their food as delivery, but it has consistently been some of the best Salvadorian food I have ever eaten. The pupusas are cheesy and flavorful, their horchata is some of the best I've had (and not too thick!), the yucca chips with chiccaron (columbian style) are absolutely fantastic and their burritos are large and well priced. I think some of the discrepancies in poorer reviews is that people are approaching this wonderful restaurant expecting Mexican cuisine. I can't wait to go in and try their menu in house sometime soon. Delivery has been speedy and friendly, and they have been excellent with special requests or needs for additional or different sauces. I think some of the reviewers on this list may want to revisit and update, because woah, there's a discrepancy as to some of the reviews and what I've experienced. We've eaten in, and gotten take out, and both were really great. I had the three taco plate and sat at a table and then tonight I got a chimichanga and and it was GOOD. The sides? Also delicious! $8 got me a huge chimichanga, a side salad with tomato, radish, and cucumbers, a container of the smoothest and most heavenly refried beans I've ever tasted, guacamole, and rice with mixed vegetables. $8. A huge amount of food, and good food, at that. The chicken in the chimichanga was really flavorful, and the shell was not at all greasy. The beans were my favorite and were smooth, slightly runny in texture, and I am pretty sure it involved chicken stock that thinned it out. They didn't taste sticky or greasy, just smooth and so good. I think I might be obsessed. Service both times I've been in, plus my experience stopping in for a tamale during the East Somerville Main Streets Foodie Crawl, have been super positive and the staff has been really friendly. I think I am going to try out a burrito from here, and I suspect it'll likely be my new spot! read more

Love this place that now is "UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP" it was good NOW is better and a lot better, ordered several times since new owner took over the place, what I noticed is a much improved delivery service [faster], good flavorful food that you can taste the freshness still at reasonable prices, we love their burritos, quesadillas, carne asada and just about every dish we ordered was excellent!!
