Needed a quick, late-night spot to grab some food. I had found this place in instagram and was intrigued by a fast-food spot advertising pupusas. Plus they had other options, including tostadas, bowls, tamales, burritos, you name it. When we arrived, there were people inside eating. We stopped to look at the menu before ordering, and were greeted by a very friendly man who made the experience more enjoyable. I ordered a tostada with steak, onions, cilantro, a little sour cream, green verde sauce, lettuce, and refried beans. It was my first time trying one so so was really excited. I also ordered two cheese pupusas, which I ended up taking to go with me. My boyfriend ordered a bowl with chicken and various toppings. My tostada was delicious. The crunchy tortilla paired with fresh steak and all the juices from the onion and cilantro paired so nicely together. The ingredients seemed very fresh. We were gonna take this to go, but we decided to dine in. The same gentleman ended up checking in on us half way through the meal to see how we were doing. I thought this was really nice. His name is Chef Noe and he was telling us that he is the head chef for this restaurant. He was glad we enjoyed our meal and it was a pleasure talking to him. Overall I think the spot is well placed as it is right near Leslie university in Harvard so I think it's a good spot for students to come or if you're local like us. It's quick but it has quality. Its fast food but it's fresh. That's what I liked about it. It's all prepared in house and the flavors are great. The decor is also cute inside, very colorful and I thought it was creative that they up-cycled Jarittos bottles into flower vases. Because of how good it smelled inside I decided to give this place a shot, I got a small burrito for like $14 and it was the most delicious burrito I've ever had in my life. We are in Cambridge for a wedding and this place was a few blocks from our hotel. We stopped in for a snack after getting off the T. I had the cheese and pork pupusa. It was very flavorful and juicy inside with a crispy made crust. It was also a very generous portion. My husband had the tamal and it was soooo good. The masa was very moist and the tamal itself was almost the size of a burrito. Chicken filling was flavorful. My daughter had the kids quesadilla with beans, cheese, and chicken. It was a generous portion and she said it was tasty. The decor is fun with nicely drawn chalkboard menu. The tables were colorful tile tops. The woman that took our order was very friendly. Tried Chivo Taqueria for the first time a few weeks ago and was not disappointed! Ordered take out online which was ready basically as soon as I arrived, although the restaurant was really cute & also has some cute patio seating. Ordered a large carne asada burritio and cheese papusa and both were excellent. Papusa came with a very generous amount of slaw and hot sauce, both of which were really flavorful. The burrito was huge and I love their huge variety of salsas that they have to choose from. Also got the horchata which was tasty as well. My order total was ~$20 which I feel is super fair considering how much food it was. Really excited to have found this place as Porter Square is severely lacking in Mexican food. I was a priest for 20 years, and I was completely abiding by the faith of the lord and was celibate. I took one bite, and I had an epiphany. The food was so delicious that it genuinely made me have an enlightenment. I contemplated going to the counter and asking for chef to give them a token of my gratitude, but I knew I had to control myself because if I saw said cook, I'd kiss them on the spot. I visited Chivo for lunch . The place was pretty empty but there were few people inside and few sitting outside. The order was taken quickly and i mentioned i wanted Cheese and Bean papusa twice and then after she asked if it was cheese and bean or cheese and spinach and i said Cheese and bean and yet i got after 3 confirmation cheese and spinach papusa Overall papusa was frozen and then grilled perfectly but since it being frozen ready it was bland which i guess how it is supposed to be but the cheese has no taste either. I did also get the side order of chips and Salsa and Guac. The 3 starts are mostly for good Guac and amazing selection of salsas and all very tasty and flavorful. I had regular salsa, mango habanero , king's salsa and one more which came with papusa but not sure of the name. Overall i am conflicted on how to rate but i will def go again one more time to try some other stuff and see how that fares and update it then but for now 3 stars read more

Wanted to love this place since I work close by. Came in the afternoon and ordered a burrito. Everything looked fresh. I got a pretty basic burrito, steak, white rice, no beans. I asked for lettuce, pico, and cheese, onion. The total came to around 17.50!! If I had added guacamole I believe it would be close to $20!! The large burrito is the same size a a regular burrito anywhere else. The rice was overcooked with too much water, so it was very mushy. The taste from the steak or pico was extremely salty. Overall, it was a below average burrito, for a very, very aggressive price! I believe the same burrito from annas or chipotle would be around $10-12, and much better quality. read more

I tried Chivo in July 2023, so I'm not sure how much things have changed since then. I was excited to see a new restaurant on Mass Ave. The decor is festive and inviting. I got a burrito bowl with fried fish and shrimp. The fried fish was not worth getting -- not much fish meat. The shrimps were small but the sauce was yummy. They do have good flavors and many topping options. But overall, I've definitely had fried fish tacos and shrimp burrito bowls that I preferred to this one, both in terms of protein portion size and fry quality. I also tried a bit of the chicken. I thought it was stringy and not particularly tender, but it's possible that's improved since my visit. Overall, Chivo has great flavors but I wasn't a big fan of their protein options. It's comparable in quality to El Jefe's and Chipotle, though more expensive than both. I might return to try their breakfast options that people seem to like. read more

Pretty solid experience here! Came in with a bunch of friends and we ordered in person. There were a few people in front of us but the line moved quick. The service was quick and kind. Portions were fair too. It was like a leveled up version of Chipotle in terms of how it works. You get to pick from dish, protein, and fillings/toppings. I love Chivo!! It's hard to find good, authentic tacos in the Boston area. So I'm very happy to have such a solid spot close by. Every one of the meats I've tried has been flavorful and juicy. I love that you get to select from a range of toppings, and the curtido is hands down my favorite. I've lived in Harvard square for 16yrs and this is the best burrito in the area. I live 2 blocks from Felipe's, Achilitos, and El Jefe's, which are all fine, but when I want something extra tasty I make my way up Mass ave. They griddle the burrito after making it which adds that extra something. The ingredients are fresh, great tasting and just better than the places right in Harvard square. The people are nice and actually take care in putting the burrito together rather than rushing and making you feel like an imposition when requesting items. There's a reason I make the trek up Mass ave when I want a burrito. These guys are just better. read more

Nice tacos. I was an early adopter and loyal and enthusiastic longtime customer. I love the food. Watch out for the irregular overpricing bravado by one of the male managers however. Usually I get a small dollop of guac on each taco for no charge. One night, I came in late, the prepper doled out the last of the guac, scraping the sides of the container so he could clean it, drowning each taco in green. The manager charged me $1.50 extra with a huge smile on his face. I really loved this place until then. Crestfallen, I haven't been back in months. Some of us need to feel it's still safe to eat out and the world hasn't gone crazy with greed and overcharging. The green drink is heavenly, but $7.99 to pulverize a small container of dry, raw kale, celery, and some apple slices is highway robbery. It should be $5.99 max, if that. Ditto the salsa and chips - except $3.99 would be more appropriate (not $6!). And a bowl of soup should be affordable. A blissful respite in a frenzy of overhyped mediocre eating establishments. People come to your place because they want to feel like they can still have a modest nice meal and not feel like they've been rooked as they do everywhere else in Boston/Cambridge. Don't ruin it. Came here recently with a group and was not particularly impressed. I had a chicken quesadilla that was just sort of fine--felt comparable in quality to what one could make relatively easily at home. Some friends tried the pupusas and enjoyed them, and they are also harder to do yourself so getting that might be the move here. I'm disappointed to write this. I've been a regular at Chivo since they opened but my experience last night will be my last. The girls there are always nice, but the gentleman working instantly had an attitude. We walked in at 9:45pm, their website hours say closing at 11pm. I watched him seemingly talk down to his woman coworker before begrudgingly coming over to take my order. I was with two other guys who had ordered before me, they ordered their meals to stay and when he asked me if I wanted to stay or to go, I said to stay and he replied "We close in 5 minutes." I said I was with the two men in front of me who were eating here and he said "ok we'll allow you to stay." Really? You'll "allow me to stay" more than an hour before you close? Lol ok, buddy. I decided to ask about the hours. He said, "Oh we changed our closing hour to 10, today is actually the first day it's happening." Haha ok, buddy. There then was confusion about what I had ordered, even though I ordered the same thing every time and have never had that issue. He had a nasty attitude about it and his tacos were the worst I've had there. Normally, they are very good but he was clearly in a hurry and couldn't care less. Between 10 and 10:20pm, I watched three men come in an order, two took their orders to go, and one was allowed to dine in. So what happened to closing in 5 minutes? Such a mystery. Before leaving I asked his name and he said it was John. Maybe "John" was having a bad day and that's okay, but I had just come from a celebration of life for my dad, my day wasn't going great either. Maybe "John" just doesn't like women. Ordered online through the Uber Eats app and it was nothing like promised. The restaurants online menu claims the base of the burrito and bowl to have a protein option, rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, onion, cilantro and a choice of salsa, with all other options being an extra charge. But when it arrived it only had rice beans and protein. The Uber Eats app also did not allow me to customize and add multiple options. The pinto beans were salty and inedible. The rice was dry and stale. There was barely any meat when ordering the steak. The over all saltiness of the food took away from all the flavors making it even more inedible. They even charged $2.99 for the smallest portion of salsa. Besides the food, the only good thing was the tres leches cake. Do not order from this place, you will be disappointed. read more

After walking by Chivo a couple of times, I was drawn in by their breakfast menu. Unfortunately, it took me a couple of tries to find a day when they were actually open at 8am like their signage advertised! The first two weekday mornings I stopped by, I found the restaurant empty, locked, and dark at 8:15 am - I was pretty confused considering the signs they kept outside boasted of new 8-11 am breakfast hours. The day I finally made my way inside, I found the place open around 9 am (not too bad) and I ordered their chorizo and eggs plate. It was pretty good, but not great. First off, the beans were SUPER SALTY. This was a good thing if you were able to get a bite of a little of everything all together, but not so tasty on their own. Secondly, the plate was advertised as having "Salvadorian fried eggs", now me, I didn't know exactly what these were but assumed they'd be somewhat like a standard fried egg. It's just scrambled eggs. It was still quite yummy, I just didn't expect scrambled eggs. Other than that, the plantains were nice, the scrambled egg and chorizo was super good with the farmers cheese and salty beans. The place just gave kind of ~off~ vibes. I'd be interested to go back and try their lunch/dinner menu to see the taco/salsa bar in action - I was kind of disappointed I wasn't given the opportunity to make use of it at breakfast. read more
