We ordered delivery from this place and everything arrived super hot and fresh! The pricing was extremely reasonable and we enjoyed everything we ordered. The steak fajitas were made with high-quality meat, came in a huge portion, and included guac plus amazing homemade tortillas. The steak quesadilla was also a great size and really delicious. The food here is great. I took myself back to my childhood and got the combo with crispy taco shells (such a rare find!) and chose ground beef as the meat. The meat was perfectly seasoned and the tacos were filled to the brim. I made a mess, as expected and planned. The rice and beans were also tasty, and I left with a full tummy and a big smile. Tasty tacos and papusas- I tried the carnitas, carne asada and ground beef. The tacos were big and generous on the meat and fillings. Meat was seasoned with fat, spices, and a touch of sweetness. The carnitas had crispy bits and a subtle BBQ-lke flavor and it was my favorite of the 3. Papusa was hot and cheesey and served with some slaw on the side. Service was quick and nice, ambiance is basic hole in the wall with a couple tables. Would go back to try more things. read more

Every time I eat from this place, it feels like home. I used to eat pupusas all the time when I was younger and this brought me right back. The food is very delicious, authentic as well. I get take out from here at least 4 times a week. I walk in at exactly the same time after work and flash a "peace" (I make it look like a gang sign) but they know I want their number two combo plate which is three tacos, rice & beans lately I've been mixing things up and ordering pupusas. Recently on National Chip Day I stopped in for a large side of guacamole. The service is perfect and they have an extensive menu. The burritos and nachos do not disappoint. The ambiance is warm and overlooks Medford St and it just works. I grew up in East Los Angeles. I know Mexican food. I ordered the carnitas enchiladas. They were terrible...definitely not authentic carnitas. Someone just sautéed some chopped up pork and threw it in the enchilada. Not slow braised, pull apart tender meat. The rice was average. If you are not into real authentic Mexican food, this place is fine. But the menu is limited (for example, no chili verde), no alcohol and limited seating. read more

Ordered two tacos as well as chips and guacamole. Food was decent but arrived cold, and took just a little longer than the window that yelp said should arrive in. So maybe 90mins? The "large" guacamole was a little deceiving. (See photo) I'm sure the food is really good when it's still warm. It was just okay cold. read more

Wow, delicious! Birthday Tacos, indeed! Combo 2 is outrageously good. On reviews alone, ordered for my sweetie's birthday dinner: - nachos - pretty good, but loved the tacos,,, - pupusa revuelta - enjoyed by all, esp the red sauce that comes with it - crunchy tacos (Combo 2) - insanely delicious. even the beans & hot sauce that come with it *chef's kiss* - burrito with carnitas - liked, and would order again. the handful of chips that come with it are essential, to scoop up whatever falls out, lol - super burrito - the only thing we didn't like, esp bc it cost more. the short ribs were very tough and difficult to chew, with a flavor that was somehow gamey? anyway, the only thing we won't be ordering again, - empanadas - enjoyed these, esp after reheating in the air fryer the next day. comes with tasty sauces. - hot sauce - deserves special mention bc I don't usually like hot sauce, and this one is HOT but delicious. I had tears streaming down my face, lol, but kept eating it and gulping water. The next day, I realized I could cut the heat with sour cream, and gobbled up the leftovers without sloshing with water afterwards. lols. - It's much further from us than Anna's, Felipe's, & El Jefe's, but we will order from here from now on. Don Julio is probably the best MVP if you want a variety of different Mexican dishes that are all solid because I feel like a lot of places usually focus on just one specialty. Absolutely loved the Tacos al Pastor - the combo of crispy pork, avocado, pineapple, and jalapeno is absolutely fantastic! This was so good I honestly wanted to order again the next day but held off. The Torta was great as well - will definitely order again. The Super Burrito was fine - felt like it was a bit too heavy on the rice - but I did like the vegetables inside. I may skip the burrito next time. Bonus Points: Very much appreciated that Don Julio gave us complimentary chips, plenty of salsa and sauces. Small hole-in-the-wall feel. I ordered the al pastor taco combo and was delighted when I was served a heaping portion for just $10, I couldn't finish it all. Pork was fresh, but not spicy as expected. Pineapple complemented it nicely. The beans and rice the meal cane with really stood out to me - fresh and flavorful. We got take-out from here. A bit of a long wait-time. Next time I would only go with Mexican dishes. I love Salvadoran pupusas, so I was excited when I saw them on the menu. They had a cheese I wasn't too crazy about though- didn't seem authentic. But it was cool they came with red sauce and pickled cabbage. What was the most tasty were the camarones a la diabla that my friend got- big spicy shrimp with rice and salad. Other friends seemed to enjoy their spiced fries (though they get a bit soggy when you order them for take-out), chicken wings, and quesadilla. I would try more of the Mexican entrees next time though- they seem to do nice sauces, and it's tasty to have the rice and salad. read more

Looking at all the positive Yelp reviews about this restaurant, I decided to head on over. I asked the kind woman at the register what her favorite type of burrito was and she said steak, but people really like carnitas, too. She also said the super burrito is healthier than the regular one. I went for the carnitas burrito. After about 10 minutes (yeah, it took kind of long to prepare, but that's probably why it was so good), this nice man brought over the burrito with some chips and a light green sauce. The sauce was pretty good and so were the chips, but they weren't out of this world. But the moment I bit into the soft tortilla, sparks flew. An indescribable slightly sweet yet savory sauce filled my mouth--it was like nothing I've ever tasted before. The tender meat had the consistency of beef. The black beans were soft as well. The burrito was so big I could only finish half of it. 10/10 would come again. The only thing that was a bummer was that I couldn't read on my laptop because there was little space. It's more of a grab n' go or grab n' eat there for 10 minutes and leave type of place. But it was relatively empty! read more

I have lived in Somerville nearly 20 years and have always gone to the same places for latin food. I tried this place after reading good reviews and wow, I was pleased to be turned on to my new favorite! The reason I am now a full on Don Julio fan is their use of flavor and spice. I know a lot of our local places are solid but when I tried the beef Enchilada Mexicana, it was amazing. For the record, I really enjoy spicy food and this was a very pleasant surprise. That's now my go to when I'm feeling the urge for Mexican food, but their burrito is on point and their papusas are delicious too. Ordered a quesadilla, nachos, empanadas, two tacos, and the chicken wings (lol this was a total impulse buy as I was starving at the time of order) via Grubhub. I am really happy with the food, particularly the quesadilla, empanadas, and shrimp taco. Everything was flavorful but these were next level. The quesadilla and empanadas were crispy and fresh as heck with cheese oozing out. I never had a shrimp taco in my life, so I expected the shrimp to be breaded but it was just grilled. This was disappointing at first, but after taking a bite, I was blown away by the flavor and moist texture. I didn't even get to the chicken wings, but they surprisingly came with fries. My search for good Mexican restaurants brought me to Don Julio's. I was not at all disappointed. In fact, I think this place has been the best Mexican food I've tried in Boston. We got the beef, fish and shrimp tacos. The beef is definitely my favorite. It's explosions-in-your-mouth flavorful. The taco shell is a bit on the thicker side (also they gave two layers per taco), but I liked the flavor. The fish and shrimp tacos didn't compare to the beef in terms of flavor, but they were pretty good with a bit of the salsa verde. We also got the Don Julio quesadilla. It was delicious! The short rib inside was very tender, and the filling mixture was rich and creamy. As a non-Latinx person I obviously can't attest to the authenticity of this place, but I can say that I would return for good quality and delicious tacos! read more

Having so many great reviews on Yelp, I've decided to give it a shot. Mind you I'm from LA so my taco standards are pretty high. This place in my opinion just doesn't cut it. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't terrible. I just think that there are at least 3 taco places within the area that are waaaaayyyyy better. First, if you're used to nachos having sour cream, then perhaps this isn't for you. Idk if they forgot the sour cream or theirs just doesn't come with it. Second, the beef tacos (hardshell) isn't bad either but it reminds me of doritos tacos from taco bell. So I suppose from an authentic stand point, that's bad? Lastly, I think that the overall hygiene of the place can use an improvement. I get that with Covid a lot of restaurants store boxes in the dining room but here you can see the grease on the stove canopy from a far, and the cashier counter isn't that tidy either. I grew up in LA, where taco trucks are the norm and Spanish feels like the second official language of the city. Needless to say, it's been a struggle for me to find decent Mexican food here in Boston. So THANK YOU DON JULIO! It's a small, unassuming place with no frills - just the way I like it. The menu is in both Spanish and English - and what really made me feel comfortable that the place was legit was that their specials board was 100% in Spanish. They're not catering towards the Chipotle crowd here! I was super hungry so I got an Empanada (super cheesy and a bit oily from being fried), the guacamole (teeny tiny portions so skip this even if you love guac), as well as a taco combo platter of Al Pastor and Shrimp tacos. The Al Pastor was super juicy and deliciously marinated. No complaints because the flavors were on point! The shrimp was chopped and had a nice grilled/barbecued finish to them. It was also tasty but could've been a bit more generous. Also - the taco combo comes with rice AND beans so you'll be happily stuffed afterwards. Dear God these are good. I ordered the combo of three tacos with carnita , beef, an chicken. They were delicious. Actually, even the rice and beans were tasty and I was compelled to eat them. I never usually eat the rice and beans since I most places they are either bland or too salty. Here it was perfect. No go easy on the hot sauce. It's the real deal. Onto the tacos. These are some hearty tacos with two soft corn shells per each taco . Walk in the back and you'll probably see a bowl of Masa waiting to be made into tortillas. They really make these fresh. I waited about ten minutes for my three tacos to be made. The service is also excellent . No one is bothering you while you eat but if you need something ask and they'll immediately take care of you. read more

The restaurant does not accommodate your request for extra beans and no dairy products. The countless amount of times I've ordered the same thing and they've failed to make the order to my needs. The tacos here are amazing and really well priced ($2.50 - $3) Had the shrimp and fish tacos, and then ordered another 2 shrimp tacos. If you can't guess, I thought the shrimp was much better :). Very authentic and custom cooked to order. The fact that they grill the shrimp is awesome! Ps: before you dump the whole sauce on top of the tacos (which I almost did), try it. Don Julio prepared the food for my wedding, and I plan on using them again for future events and simply to dine. I'll certainly be recommending them to all my friends and family. The chicken was incredibly tender, moist, and full of grilled flavor! The beef was also super tasty, tender, though just a tad salty for my taste. All my guests said the salmon was great, and let me tell you something about the sweet plantains.... Half the crowd had very little experience with sweet plantains, but these were so amazing, even though we doubled our order this was the first thing to go! The atmosphere inside the restaurant is very laid back, but it fits the prices. What doesn't fit is how good the food is for the money. Best value for Latino food I know of. read more
