Delicious authentic Mexican food. The service is always friendly. This is one of my go to burrito spots in Somerville. I'm a big fan.

Despite the name of the restaurant which pays heed to the city of Guadalajara, I suspect the owners are Salvadorian, as the pupusas seem to be the star of the show here. I had two with queso and loroco, my usual order, and the texture was great. The veggie taco was so-so; garnishes were good, but the inclusion of broccoli in a taco kind of ruined it for me. The atol de elote did not quench our thirst, as expected, but was well-spiced and would be a great conclusion to a meal in the winter. read more

I love how good their takeout service is and how they never skimp. Really good tasting mexican food too.

This is a great little local takeout spot that I visit almost every time I am in the area. I've tried all of the staples from the tortas, tacos, quesadilla etc. What keeps me coming back however are the snack sized pupusas which are absolutely delicious. The zucchini stuffed pupusa is a cheesy treat that really hits the spot for me. The staff are kind and there is always some soccer on tv which is a bonus for me. Pickled cabbage and salsa are complimentary though hard to use in the ziplock bags they are provided in. The salsa verde is just perfect. Overall, top 5 Mexican restaurants I've visited in MA as it always seems to be fresh and delicious. Would definitely recommend for takeout. read more

Tapatio is back after their 2006 fire, and with it, Broadway does the impossible and becomes deliciouser. That's right, deliciouser. You know all those taco and burrito places doting Cambridge and Brookline and the like these days? Anna's, Boca Grande, etc.? Those places' food taste like the places they're in -- sterile, safe, boring. But if you head on over to Broadway, the most delicious street in the delicious city of Somerville, you'll find Tapatio, where they stuff you full of flavors that dance and mingle and are happy to be together, not sitting next to one another like strangers on an uncomfortable plane ride into your mouth. The food's as cheap or cheaper here than those boring places, and unlike them, actual Mexican people -- LOTS of actual Mexican people -- eat here, which should be telling. And the staff that have helped me on my numerous times back since the reopening have spoken English just fine, so don't worry about that. Warm, inviting, delicious, FAST, and cheap. When the friendly woman behind the counter here handed me my bag, I almost thought she had made a mistake: it seemed way too big and heavy. Apparently my order included chips and salsa and a salad, making it a veritable feast for two for only $11.50! The salsa was really, really mild, almost like watered down tomato soup. Luckily, the spicy pickled salad with jalapeños pick(l)ed up the slack in the flavor department, and it made a great way to break up the greasiness. Even the "small" burrito for $6.50 was giant (probably a 12" tortilla). I wouldn't spend the extra dollar to upgrade to large unless you're really, really hungry! The bean and cheese pupusa ($2.50) was delicious and filling. The cheese bubbled out and got crispy in a few places, so good! Just be prepared to wait a few minutes for a pupusa--they're made to order! The tamale ($2) wasn't quite what I expected. First of all, it came wrapped in a banana leaf (I think?) instead of a corn husk, which made it a little more... flaccid? And instead of a little bit of finely chopped/ground chicken in the middle, this tamale was absolutely stuffed with huge chunks of chicken, carrots, potatoes, and peas, almost a chicken stew of sorts. Unfortunately, the chicken had a bone in it, but that almost made me like it more--I could practically picture the filling bubbling away on the stove! Overall, I'm glad I didn't succumb to one of the many other Mexican places lining Broadway! Location- pretty close to the Orange line stop and right on the main road. Ambiance- it was frequented by a lot of Latinos so I'm guessing the food has to be good or either authentic. Food: I got a steak burrito with everything except for cheese and sour cream. The burrito was grilled on the outside on the flat top and had a slight crunch. The meat was plentiful albeit a bit saltier than I would've liked, but the ingredients worked well together and everything was fresh. My favorite was adding these pickled green Chiles they had at the table. The order came with chips too, although not too many, with a vibrant and homemade salsa. The burritos here are amazing! I often drive here when I want a good burrito. They throw in some chips and fresh salsa too! After wrapping all their burritos, they throw them on the grill which really makes it awesome. Inexpensive and friendly! I came to this restaurant after attempting to eat at Taco Loco. Apparently, someone drove into Taco Loco, thus making the structure unsafe. Luckily, one lady was inside the restaurant (not the best idea?) and came outside to hand us a menu for Tapatio. She says that they're sister restaurants and the food is the same. So we walked down a few blocks to Tapatio. This restaurant is larger than Taco Loco with about 7 tables that can sit at least 4 people each. The counter is toward the back of the restaurant. The quality of the food is the same as Taco Loco except I think it has an even greater selection. They have a whole roast chicken for $8.99! That's probably cheaper than Whole Foods! The food is the same fresh quality and just as delicious as Taco Loco since they're literally the same. But I think the menu selection is a bit bigger and the seating is slightly larger. read more

I walked by this place a few times and they just opened up recently. Yesterday, I braved the horrendous MBTA system and made my way over to Capatio to give them a try. Keep in mind they're still new so maybe they'll work out the kinks. First off, it's a little confusing because you walk in and it looks like a nice sit down restaurant. The walls are painted orange but it looks really nice. But then you realize it's cafereria style and you have to go up to the counter to order. Some things are made to order, while others are sitting there ready to be scooped up. I ordered the beef tongue taco and small chicken burrito, which I only ate part of. The burrito comes with chips and a hot sauce. I thought the chips were a little on the stale side. The hot sauce wasn't really hot and was a bit bland. I don't know why they don't serve a regular salsa with their chips. The beef tongue taco was really good. It was a really good blending of flavors and actually turned out to be a little spicy, so watch out if you can't handle the spice. It was a nice blend of well-seasoned beef tongue, salsa, some white sauce, guac and a couple other things. The burrito was pretty good but not as good as the taco. I like the fact that after they filled it, they grilled it. It took me awhile to decide, but even after I decided, the service was really slow. REALLY SLOW. Like take one star off slow. Don't go if you're in a rush. And their English isn't solid, but that's ok. Don't expect to be understood your first time saying something. You're probably better off pointing to what you want and saying something like "todo" if you want it all. You can see my Spanish has taken me far in life. If I had to choose between Tapatio and Taco Loco I would run as fast I can to my beloved Tapatio. Ingredients are fresh and they don't microwave the nachos to melt the cheese like their rival, Taco Loco. Zapote. Yes! They have zapote shakes! Wow! This place is excellent...though its very similar to Taco Loco (which is definitely not a bad thing and its only a few blocks down the street). But El Tapatio has a bigger menu, tasty batidos (fruit shakes/smoothies) and a casual but comfy dining room. I'll definitely be back...and again I'll probably be the only gringo in there. read more

We came here over the weekend, originally intended to go to Taco Loco, but as a car had crashed through their window, they were closed. They had a sign up directing people to Tapatio up the street. Our friends were bummed as they had come all the way from Marlborough and were very much looking forward to Taco Loco, but once they got their food, they said it was very similar in taste. I had a small steak burrito, and there was nothing small about it. It was filled with very tasty guac and other garnishes (I had them put everything in it). It was very tasty and came with homemade tortilla chips and salsa. For under $6 it's definitely a bargain! I was full for hours, no way could I have finished a large one. Our friends also got the burritos, with one of them getting a large. It was HUGE. He was actually able to finish it, and said the only difference from Taco Loco was the pork had a slightly different texture. Their young son had a quesadilla and he seemed to enjoy it quite a lot, having fun eating it while making dinosaur noises (we were going to the Museum of Science afterwards). My husband had the tacos and he loved them, everything we had was very tasty. All in all a great experience especially considering we hadn't planned on coming here in the first place. This is probably one of the most solid 5 stars I've had in a long time. What this all comes down to is: Do you prefer american chain type food, or the kind of Mexican food you get from someone's kitchen? I ordered a lot, but here are the high points. For 7.99 I got the Huevos Rancheros, and this was all delivery. It was fresh, with a generous helping of Queso Fresco (in chunks, not little crumbles) Two whole fried plantains, two sunny-side up eggs and enough beans to put me in the couch. They were thoughtful to point of putting the freshly homemade Masa tortillas in some foil so they wouldn't be drenched in salsa. I made little sandwiches with it, and it was EXSQUISIT. Mild is mild... but still flavourful. I found their spicey to be good, but it's not a contest to burn tongues... so it's just normal spice. Now, their marinades can be spicey enough to knock you down if you don't have a cold one handy, but it's a great thing. Their marinated pork burritos are divine. For side orders, you can get a freshly steamed Tamale con Pollo; FRESHLY roasted chicken salted and peppered, and rolled into a bunch of masa. The whole deal is wrapped in a an actual bannana or plantain leaf. It is amazing, it's a good lunch, and it's 3 bucks. They do the same straight up as a classic desert using sweet corn (Tamal De Elote), and that comes in the leaf, sweet and soft. Their Pupusas are wonderfully filling, using the same homemade everything, and fresh Chicharron (think pork rind, but more pork). I personally an a huge fan of their Revueltas Pupusas, which have refried beans (SO GOOD) chicharron, and cheese. They also have a traditional spiced cheese pupusa that I haven't found anywhere outside of Mexico Speaking of Mexico, this is more than just Mexican food. It's all based on solid foundations, but there is south of more than one border here, in a wonderful mix. I can't reccommend this enough, especially as delivery. Their delivery is FAST, very hot and fresh, packaged and handled so that you get a good product. Eat a burrito here.. then at one of the others... you may still enjoy them both, but Taptillo will be the one that sticks in your mind. read more

I'm only knocking off a star because the place is a little shabby and could use some make-up. Other than that, I am afraid and shocked to say that Tapatio may save me a trip into nearby Porter or Davis squares for my beloved Anna's burrito. The chicken burrito here was as close to Anna's as I think I am ever going to get -- and Anna's is my idea of perfection manifested. The ingredients were fresh, the tortilla was stuffed, the guac passed my test, and the salsa was adequately spicy. The menu is extensive, and they are flexible with the options, but, honestly, the furthest I'll probably venture is trying the steak burrito instead of chicken. I'm a burrito girl all the way. I have celiac disease and my boyfriend is from Southern California, so you could say we're connoisseurs of Mexican/Latin American food. We're pretty hard to sell on American or Austin-style tacos, so finding Tapatio in Massachusetts was a miracle. If you want authentic Latin American food, Tapatio is the place to go in all of the Boston area. The tacos, burritos, tortas, fried yucca, chichcarones, any any of the platters are amazing. My original plan was to grab a take out burrito carnitas at Rincon, only because they also got 4.5 stars, but from more reviewers. However, they don't open until 4:30p on Mondays. This was a bit of a schlep for me, coming from Kendall Sq, but I was determined to having a burrito, so only a half block up Broadway, and across the street (and even easier parking) I found Tapatio. The burrito was massive, with generous chunks of succulent pork, not the shredded mush you often find a chain TexMex shops, and a perfect blend of rice, beans, cilantro and guacamole. A friend of mine recommended this place to me and said that I could find it by the green awning -- I'm glad he told me that because I probably would have walked right by! Ordered a steak burrito and got chicken instead (but honestly I was so hungry it didn't matter). It was very good (because I usually don't eat chicken) and the flavors were just so fresh; but I was VERY impressed by the boyfriend's tacos -- one steak and one chicken and they were just beautiful!! The food here is consistently delectable. Typically I order one or two "pupusas de queso con loroco", which costs $2 a piece and tastes fantastic. The Huevos Rancheros breakfast, served all day and a measly $8, is so filling I can never finish it. The only negative thing that can be said about the place is that the service is seldom fast because there is always something on the grill. It's not really their fault, though, given the demand. Also, it's hard to find the place due to non-obvious advertising (and I shudder to think what would happen if more people passersby spotted the place, since they're already quite busy). If you want low-frills, fresh, fast casual Central and South American food, this is your spot. Ordinary exterior and ordinary eating area hiding a cafeteria style eatery. They have all sorts of unusual and really yummy foods. Happened on the place with a friend and asked to fill a plate with a little of what was on display. WOW - culinary goldmine! They have a variety of dishes that are prepared for a lunch sack.
