I had been to Tulum before with a friend and really enjoyed it. We got the Pulpo Al Pastor, the guacamole, and the Volcano Molcajete, which had beef, shrimp, pork, al pastor, cheese, nopales, rice and beans. Basically, the whole yard. The meat was cooked so well. Everything was so tender and juicy, and there was just so much food. I went back again this week for Mexican Independence Day, this time with my cute date. We shared the Queso con Chorizo and the Guacamole con Chicharrón. Honestly, those two things could have been dinner because the portions are so generous. Don't be fooled by the size of the queso plate. That thing is deep. Seriously, there is a LOT of queso in there. They also give you a generous amount of chicharrón with the guacamole. The chicharrón tasted warm, almost like it had just been fried, and added a really nice crunch to the guac. For a main, I had the octopus tacos, which had a lot of octopus in them. The watermelon and radish, along with the aioli, added such a nice contrast of sweet, savory, warm and cool. They were delicious. Honestly, my only problem with this place is that the food is so good and the portions are so fair that I had a hard time eating all of it. Oh well. We got to take some of it home, so I guess that's a good kind of problem. We also shared a flight of margaritas: the classic, mango, passionfruit, and watermelon. I think a flight is actually great for two people, unless you want to get crunk! The restaurant is very "instagramable" and the service was excellent. We came around 6pm on a weekday and it was completely empty. We came here because we saw tik tok videos of how fun, busy, and vibrant this place was but I think we just came at the wrong time and wrong day. The business is sort of in a house? It was small and kind of dark inside. It was definitely an interesting experience,,, The appetizer was reallyyy good, I forgot the name though... The mole however, was not very good. The mole was liquidy and the chicken was dry. Overall, I think this place is more for fun busy nights where you just drink and apps. Came here on a Saturday evening and the place was decently busy, but we were lucky enough to get a table for two without waiting for long and without a reservation. We got one of their high tops in a back room that had great decor and wasn't too tight; overall, comfy vibes. The menu had a good mix of food and drinks; when we came, they didn't have their liquor license yet so everything was non alcoholic, but I could already tell their bartenders were pretty skilled just by their mocktails - great flavor. We got an app as well as their dish for two people, all plenty of food. The volcano was a huge amount of food and did not disappoint. While their app had good flavor, I honestly would only return for the volcano - huge, tasty, and just great value. Service was also pretty solid throughout the night. Overall, could not recommend Tulum more. Nice spot to grab a drink or enjoy a good dinner - the only con is that you kind of need a car to get here, but other than that, yummy food and a great dinner! Tulum is an elevated Mexican restaurant an extensive food and drink menu (especially tequila) too. It's in kind of a weird neighborhood of Somerville that's hard to get to without a car but lots of parking. We started off with two drinks- a frozen mangonada and this passion fruit drink. They were both solid but I liked the mangonada better because the passion fruit cocktail had too much pulp in it! For food, we started off with chips and guac. This guac was some of the best I've had. It was super fresh and you could tell exactly what ingredients they used. We also their pork ribs! The ribs fell off the bone and I loved the warm sauce except it was a tiny bit dry. The sauce was reminiscent of an umami bbq sauce. We decided to try their zucchini dish, as recommended by the manager! I don't love zucchini usually but I liked it. It was roasted with cheese, sauces, and some shrimp. Very creative, Lastly we got the tuna ceviche of the day. I didn't really like this because it was really heavy on the dill. I think it would've been good without it. However the presentation was gorgeous and it came with plantains. Overall the vibes are superb here for a date, girls night, or whatever!! read more

We ordered two straws to go haha i think it was like $4 each. Firstly the shaved street corn was good, i wish it had a bit more heat would have been nice but that's just me. Use them plantain chips to scoop it up. The barria tacos were yummy i would def come back just for that. You get 3 tacos and barria sauce dip on the side (probably ask for extra sauce next time). We must have driven past Tulum a zillion times - and FINALLY got a chance to check it out. We ordered the taquitos (appetizer) and enchiladas con mole, along wiht a STRONG maragarita and a Modelo Negra. The taquitos were the star of the evening, and possibly the best we've had in our entire lives. Considering that we travel to Mexico very often (and stay away from gringo spots), that's saying a lot! The mole was a bit disappointing, lacking the depth of the mole rojo typical of CDMX/San Pedro Actopan. In any case, we loved the decor, and the service was impeccable. read more

My mom and I had been wanting to try Tulum for a while, and on a whim, we decided to see if we could snag a reservation. While already in the area, we called, and the receptionist mentioned that if we could arrive in five minutes, they'd have a table for us. We made it on time, and when we walked in, the receptionist greeted us. She told us we'd be seated upstairs and that we had exactly one hour to eat. Once other parties arrived, we were told we could finish our drinks downstairs at the bar. We agreed to the time frame, and I have to say--she was very strict about sticking to it! From the moment we sat down, it was clear they were trying to get everything out quickly, and sure enough, they made sure we were done within that time frame. Although we felt a little rushed, the overall service was fair. Now, onto the food. We ordered the chips and salsa, and while the salsa seemed fresh, it was quite bland. Honestly, we'd recommend skipping it, especially with how quickly the food comes out and the almost $8 price tag (or $13 if you go for the guacamole). We weren't sure if the quick turnaround was because they wanted the table, despite there being 6 or 7 other tables available, or if it's just how they operate. However, we do recommend the street corn, which we'd give a 4/5--it was a standout! We also tried the margarita flight for about $26. The coconut margarita was a hit--5/5, as was the mango margarita--5/5. The strawberry margarita, on the other hand, lost points for flavor, so we'd rate it 3/5. The passionfruit margarita 0/5, extremely bitter. My mom ordered essentially sides for her meal. She had the shrimp from the appetizer section ($15.99 for Shrimp de la Casa) since the shrimp in the main menu was too spicy for her. She paired it with a side of rice and beans ($5.50), and with all came out to the portion sizes closely resembling that of a normal plated meal. She rated everything a 5/5 and was really glad that the waitress/receptionist recommended this alternative. I went for the Birria street tacos ($18.00), and I'd give them a 4/5. They were good, but not particularly memorable. I ordered them because the waitress recommended them, saying that many patrons specifically come for it. We really enjoyed the vibe, especially the quieter atmosphere upstairs compared to the downstairs area. The waitress did mention that they mainly seat couples upstairs, so if you make a reservation, just specify which area you'd prefer. A quick note for those considering accessibility--there are a few stairs at the front entrance, so if that's a concern, you might want to ask to be seated downstairs, because there are even more steps going up to the second floor. Overall, we had a good experience and would definitely return, but we'd make a reservation next time to avoid feeling rushed or pushed to hurry. read more

I recently went into the newly opened Tulum @tulum_somerville restaurant, nestled in the vibrant heart of East Somerville at 3 Washington St, Somerville, MA 02143. This gem is a fresh addition to the locale, and while securing a liquor license in Massachusetts is notoriously challenging, Tulum creatively circumvents this with an array of stunning mocktails. Their basil watermelon mocktail was a refreshing delight, scoring a perfect 10/10, while the tajin and mango mocktail, with its tangy zest, was a solid 8/10. If you're a fan of tajin, their signature tajin stick is a must-try! Appetizer-wise, we indulged in their shaved street corn, a tasteful twist on the classic with less mayo, more lime juice, tajin, and queso fresco, earning it an 8/10. Accompanied by flimsy yet tasty plantain chips, this dish is a fantastic choice for those who prefer their corn with a tangy kick. The chicken nachos were another hit, lavishly topped with guacamole and jalapeños, each bite packed with flavor and well-cooked chicken, also scoring an 8/10. For main dishes we tried the cochinita pibil. This dish had slow-cooked pork served on a banana leaf, was succulent and rich in flavor, a hearty 8/10. The chiles rellenos, however, were a mixed bag for me, reminiscent of pizza sauce and cheese, landing at a 5/10. It might just boil down to personal taste. Dessert was the crowning glory of our meal. The flan de mama was exceptionally creamy and rich, easily one of the best flans I've ever savored, a well-deserved 10/10. And the churros with ice cream? Heavenly warm with a scrumptious filling, a definite 9/10. It's great to have a new Mexican cuisine hotspot nearby! I'm eagerly looking forward to my next visit, with the fajitas and mole high on my list. We stopped in last night for the first time for an early dinner. It happened to be a Wednesday, which is half price margaritas, yay! So of course we both tried the house Margarita, which was delicious. Extra points for having tajin as an option for the glass rim.For starters we had the Queso Fundido with chorizo. Our entrées were the Chilies Rellenos and Camaron Street Tacos. Everything was absolutely phenomenal! The perfect flavorful food for a cold December night. I had a great meal at Tulum last night ! They had the cutest menus I have seen and nice decor. We tried the shaved street corn, burrito maya, birria tacos, mangonada drink, and ended off with churro & ice cream. The birria tacos were spectacular and caught me by surprise because of how good they were. I typically try to avoid ordering birria tacos from restaurants since it tends to be disappointing, however, they definitely perfected their recipe for their birria tacos. They did not disappoint at all & didn't skimp on the meat either. The burrito was delicious and the sauce complimented it well. The street corn had great flavor and paired nice with the plantain chips. Overall, I really enjoyed everything we ordered and our serve was incredibly helpful, as well as nice. We sat upstairs, which had a darker atmosphere but super cute for dinner and they played great music. Parking is a little tricky since it's on a busy street. I asked for spicy salsa and added it to the main salsa to give it more flavor. I got the pozole. I've been searching forever to find pozole in Massachusetts. I like that this was the red pozole. However, it was 90% meat with very few hominy. I'm used to the soup being at least 50% hominy. For this reason I was disappointed. My fiancé got a burrito and it was amazing. The horchata was bomb. The service was also very good. My fiancé was taking a bite of my soup and the server thought I didn't have a spoon, so we brought me a new spoon. That attention to detail is worth a star. We got the Volcano Molcajete" SHRIMP, CARNE ASADA, POLLO ASADO, AL PASTOR & COCHINITA WITH GRILLED CHEESE NOPALES & SPECIAL HOUSE SALSA SERVED WITH RICE, BEANS, & TORTILLAS. It was very good, but the side of rice and beans was definitely not enough for two people to share. We also got the appetizer of battered plantains with dipping sauce. It was very good. The food was great, the atmosphere and staff were wonderful. But forewarned the videos on TikTok and Instagram are a big catfish. Maybe was not open or maybe it is so non descriptive that you don't look twice. none the less the place is quite a vibe , there are 2 diff sitting areas. Where we were seated was a big dark but not as bad. The salsa and chips were decent and their spicy salsa was really good. WE only ordered some apps as part of dinner plan actually 5 in total but since they are in Tapas style it was not a lot . Their Corn with Plantain chips was amazing so was their Machos Dorado. We also had Machitos Muduros which were fried plantains filled cheese and sweet guava sauce , Nachos (simple and good ) and Sopes which were good as well. I tried the place twice 2 days in a row - 1 dine in and 1 take out. I really enjoyed the dine in experience. The vibe was great around the bar, even though the set up was a little tight. The music was loud but I really enjoyed it and folks were up dancing, which was great. I wish there was more than 1 tv to watch sports. I liked the chips and salsa and the guac was good, even though I think it was a small portion for the twice. The chick fajitas were great. I liked the diced up veggies and the meat was well seasoned. It seemed like a good portion of food for dining in. The takeout experience was different. It took a while for us to get our food and the portions were much different. When we got our food, we noticed no chips came with the guac, so I had to go back in. They also forgot the tortillas for the fajitas with the order. The portions for to-go were definitely smaller. It also doesn't say on the menu that there's cheese on the beans but when we got them to go there was cheese that I had to remove. I would go back, but mostly likely to dine in because of the vibes and better service. After having reviewed Tulum earlier this year, this place and the decor def give Tulum vibes. read more

We went there on a Sunday afternoon and had a good experience there. The food came quick and hot and fresh. We were especially impressed by the taste of the freshly made tortillas from a separate steamer-looking box. My mom ordered chile rellenos and she absolutely loved it. I also tried some from her plate--- the green pepper was soft and juicy, not very spicy; the inside was flavorful and full of cheese that's melted deliciously. The sauce on the top was my favorite, the ranchero sauce. The volcano molcajete was the original reason that we can here--- so much meat! And after we tried it, I think it's worthy! Beef strips were soft and flavorful. The Mexican sausage was everyone's favorite. It was slightly spicy, full of Mexican spice. On the bottom there was sauce (I think it was bbq sauce) together with pulled pork. It was so good--- the pulled pork was full of sauce and good flavors.
