Had a crazy morning with power outage and snow squalls yesterday. Today, coming back from 2 of the 3 appts that I had to cancel I was sitting in front of St. Clair # trying to find out who had taco Tuesday. I'd only been here one time before, but I thought the food was excellent, & I knew they were pretty close, so I called. The sweetest young woman told me that they had $2 taco Tuesdays! Beef/chicken, soft/ hard shell. I was honestly so hungry, I took a bite of the middle 1 & that's why it's turned around, and doesn't look all that great. They were excellent. Those tacos were stuffed, I could only eat 1, brought the other 2, home. I didn't eat a whole lot of chips, either, but let's talk about the homemade salsa! Spicy perfection! You can purchase a lg ($8) or small ($4). I got the Lg one, and Pam the #NumeroUno waitress in the entire , was kind enough to put the salsa into 2 containers for me. I was really grateful for that because if I'd had just the lg container, my small household probly wouldn't hv finished it b4 it, expired(?). Pam was just a gem all the way around. I was really excited to try Los Pinguinos because I've been hoping to find an authentic Mexican restaurant nearby. Unfortunately, it completely took away that little glimmer of hope I had. The service is honestly the best part -- the employees are super kind and welcoming, and they always treat you with respect. I really appreciate that about them. But everything else just misses the mark. The ambiance and decor look very cheap and thrown together -- it feels more like they raided a dollar store for decorations. It really needs a lot of work to match the quality you'd expect from a restaurant charging the prices they do. The food is okay -- not terrible, but definitely not great either. It's just average, which would be fine if it were priced fairly. But for what you're getting, it's way too expensive. To make matters worse, they've never gotten my order right, which gets frustrating after giving them multiple chances. Overall, I can't recommend Los Pinguinos. It feels like a waste of money, and I left more disappointed than anything. I wanted authentic flavor and a nice experience, but this just wasn't it. read more

We have been to this restaurant before and today was pretty good. The enchilada sauce was a bit greasy for me. Not sure I would get again. I don't recall this before. The tostadas were good overall. Service was a bit slow but they are always busy here. Not an issue as the staff is very nice. It is a casual Mexican dining experience. We will return again but maybe just stick with the tostadas or veggie quesadilla as we are vegetarian and they don't have a lot of options. Churros are a must have! Try it for yourself. read more

The decor is cute in here! The wait staff was very friendly! We actually drove out here for the deep fried ice cream. It wasn't great. It was rock hard and just wasn't too good. It didn't have corn flakes, it had like a cinnamon cereal on it. It also came with caramel and the dreaded Hershey syrup on top! Honey would have been nice! The chips and salsa were great! Warm chips and tasty salsa! We also got the birria pizza. It was not good and unfortunately covered in either crema or sour cream. Pretty disappointed. The server was sweet enough, but new, and reflected as such. I'm new to the area and was hopeful and exited to try this place. First, I ordered the chimichangas, which should have been a total of, I'm assuming, 4 small chimichangas. I received a burrito instead. So clearly the kitchen and the server didn't know the difference. After that mistake, the server cashed my bill of a single dinner (not the dinner I ordered) and water for another couple's dinner bill. Of which, I ended up paying a little more than my own bill. OMG BECKY!!! If you want delicious Mexican food, look no further!!! This is absolutely amazing food. It has the original taste of southwest Detroit. I had the combo with the taco, enchilada, and tostada. The enchilada had a kiss of mole sauce in it. It was mouth watering. The taco was one of the best I have ever had. I had to save the tostada for my lunch the next day. Veronica was our server, and she made us feel like we were at her house. We tried all three hot homemade sauces, and I highly recommend them. The fried ice cream was superior to most. It was super creamy and not at all oily. I absolutely adore mexican food, you will not be disappointed at all. Stop in on Tuesday they have taco specials $2 dollars. I can't wait to go back!!! I love this place. Only downfall, no margaritas!!!! read more

I have been to this location a few times! And each time it is amazing I went again today (11/7/25) with a friend of mine who has never been and it was just as good as it usually is! We enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff! The food was amazing! Our waitress Caisey was amazing definitely boosted the service and went above and beyond we shared laughs and stories and over all enjoyed her as our server!. The food always comes out pretty quickly and always hot! I do enjoy the trio of salsa's you can get with chips! Definitely recommend it all three are very good especially the more spicy one that one is definitely my favorite! Overall definitely recommend it to anyone in the area! The location was just publicly opened on 03/15 this seems to be a seasoned business! Went with my GF on a Saturday around 4pm there was a line about 8 people deep but did move with no issues. The location has parking in the back a few spots in the front the parking needs some TLC The restaurant is simple no thrills which is fine stick with good service and food! The staff was very nice and was able to get items out in a good time even with a packed house. The food was very good Chips and Salsa was good, the salsa wasn't chunky but more smooth and the chips were good (Free refills) I got the Super Burrito which was half chicken half steak with 3 different sauces. It was stuffed with beans/rice and lettuce. The burrito stuffed me to a point I was about to take a nap on the bench. It was nicely flavored and overall very good.... For me I'd go for another dish next time, just because I want to try other things. My GF got the Chicken Fajita Burrito she loved it and couldn't finish it and took it home We got flavored lemonade which was fantastic with free refills. Overall the meal sat us back $40 not including tip. If your in St Clair swing by this little place is going to be big if it keeps up what we experienced tonight read more

This place is always busy. I finally had an opportunity to try it out. The food was good, queso was good, guac was excellent. I had the botana, very good. Chips got soggy pretty fast. Large portion had to bring half back home. My boyfriend got the special which is served in a pineapple. He loved it. The atmosphere lacks luster but the food makes up for it as does the food. I used to complain about the lack of good Mexican food in Michigan. (I used to live in Seattle and their Mexican food was BOMB) I tried this place for the first time tonight and it was delicious! 3 strikes....I went the first week on that Friday, and they didn't open. 1) Snow, no employees, and no food were their reasons for not opening. 2) Went back 3 weeks later with Mexican colleagues and the food was all lacking flavor. I would have bet there was no salt, lime, or any spices in the back. We waited 50 minutes to eat and they even didn't put in one of the fajitas orders and had to 'rush' a double order. 3) I had a friend pick me up a birria burrito another two later than that and I am not sure about the execution of the dish. They shot some sour cream on the burrito so you really can't pick it up and the consommé had about a quarter inch of oil on top...took 3 napkins to soak enough oil off to taste the flavorless greasy juice. We are really excited to have an authentic Mexican dining experience close to home! Both times we went the food was delicious, it's hard not to fill up on chips and the various types of homemade salsas that come to the table first thing! The staff have all been very nice, they could work on navigating their tables when the restaurant is busy though, sometimes the wait times between requests feel overly long. Between the multiple visits and party members, we have tried the Chori Queso, normal queso, elote, ceviche, birria pizza, mojarra frita, veggie quesadilla, veggie fajitas and even the beef tongue taco -- with no complaints! read more

Let me say I was going into this place ready to judge harshly. This place met every expectation. Chips and salsa were great. I enjoyed the 3 hot salsas. They were not skimpy on the chips either. The taco I got was authentic tasting. Service was flawless. They had Mexican music playing. I mean this place ain't no resort in Cancun and the building is what it is, but the food was amazing. I have been looking for a great Mexican restaurant that had more than the basic Mexican dishes that most places have. My wife and I were more than happy with our food. The Fajita's with pinnapple, beef, chorizo, shrimp, chicken, peppers and onions was VERY GOOD. HUGE PORTIONS as well. We also had their Queso dip with chorizo in it as well which was fantastic. We had so much queso left over from the appetizer I was able to spoon some on the queso onto my fajita's and I have to tell you... that was the best Fajita I have ever had. I audibly made it clear and my wife was like whoa you really like that. I couldnt gush enough about the food quality, the massive quantity provided and flavors! My family and I stopped at Los Pinguinos on a recent Saturday night and were definitely impressed. The dining room of the restaurant is a fairly decent size, colorful, clean and well lit. Although the restaurant was incredibly busy, you didn't feel like you were jammed into other tables. The wait staff was incredibly attentive and helpful in clearing up any questions that we had. Seeing that my family came in three separate vehicles, at different times, I expected the staff to ignore us until the entire party showed up, but that was NOT the case. The only thing that disappointed me about our visit to Los Pinguinos was the fact that they don't have a liquor license yet. I would have LOVED to have a couple margaritas to enjoy with my meal. At the end of the meal, I quizzed my family members for their honest opinion on their meals. Everyone agreed that the food was flavorful, fresh, hot and delicious. The portion sizes were rather large, I don't think anyone actually finished their entire meal. I ordered the Lengua (beef tongue) tacos and was incredibly impressed with the delicious flavor, yet simplicity of the dish. The tacos were accompanied by rice and beans. My family had ordered a couple of botanas as appetizers. The botanas were an incredibly generous portion of tortilla chips topped with chorizo, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, sliced avocado, jalapeno, chopped onions, and shredded cheese. They definitely did NOT disappoint my family. If you find yourself up in the lovely, St. Clair, Michigan area and develop a craving for authentic Mexican cuisine, give Los Pinguinos a try. Very happy there's finally a Mexican restaurant in close proximity to where we live! Their food is reminiscent of Grand Azteca on Grosebeck in Fraser before it went downhill. They have a large menu, plenty of options to choose from. It's a fairly small building, but we didn't have to wait to be seated at 5:30 on a Monday night. If I had a negative comment to make, it'd be their salsa they bring to the table was lacking in a good salsa flavor & their chips I'm pretty sure weren't house made & were equivalent to what you'd buy at any grocery store flavorwise. My meal was fantastic & it was the same thing I used to order at Grand Azteca, the Burrito Perez. It was loaded with chorizo & about six large sized shrimp on the top with a yummy white cheese sauce. Inside was tender steak, the chicken was tasty & so was the rice (I omitted the beans). I also ordered a side of grilled onions, which were flavorful. Hubby got their nachos with ground taco flavored beef, which he said was very salty to him. The establishment was very clean & our server as well as the rest of the employees were very friendly & attentive. Highly recommend trying this place out, because you won't regret it! read more

Super excited that this place has opened in St. Clair. Easily the most authentic Mexican food in the county, blowing Senor Tequilla (Port Huron) out of the water. If they have it, try their different salsas; the green tomatillo, smoky red salsa and creamy jalapeño were what I remember from my time abroad. We had the elotes, ceviche, a lengua (beef tongue) taco, and a vegetable quesidilla. All were on point. Will continue to support this new business. read more

We moved here from Chicago eight years ago, where you couldn't throw a rock without hitting a taqueria. And, it is no secret that this part of Michigan has zero options when it comes to authentic Mexican cuisine. Until now! As a professional chef who happens to be Mexican, this place is the real deal. I have visited two times now, and I want to keep coming back to try everything on the menu. The flavors in the dishes are spot on and just as good as anything that I have had anywhere, including my own house. The presentation is also delightful. The service both times was super friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is typical Mexican flare and music. Reminded me of my grandma's house.
