I suspect that they would have been good, but they were cold, and the cheese had not melted. The portion was pretty small for $15. We decided not to order anything else. It seemed like they might have been understaffed, because the one guy that took our order and served us was covering the whole restaurant. Ordering in is easy to do but on line can be difficult due to the new menu, it is hard to figure out what you are ordering without pictures. Something changed. Previous meal wasn't great but this last meal was inedible. Lukewarm frijoles, lukewarm everything, so my food must have been inexpertly microwaved or heated up. The rice was hard and lumpy. But the booby prize was the tamale. It was cement-like and the meat filling smelled old and stale. One bite convinced me that there was no reason to eat it and every reason not to. It obviously had been made days (weeks?) before and kept past its expiration date. Dried out, and possibly spoiled. I paid over $10 for this meal and essentially ate a quarter cup of lukewarm canned bean preparation with no spice or cheese even. And nobody asked or said anything and the place was about empty as you can get. I see now perhaps why that is. Alas, won't be back and cannot recommend. It's such a cute place inside and I love Mexican, Southwestern and related cuisines but this place is too unreliable any more to visit. read more

THE BAD Paid a lot of $$$ and was not filling. The menu part from above, was weird, said "that isn't his menu and he doesn't have these items" but when I read the address from the website he confirmed it was indeed that restaurant (site matched the business card). Idk what that was about. Taste was dry, servings small. THE UGLY Gave me some serious runs for 2 days straight (never happened before like that unfortunately and this was a first I had been to this establishment). Overall, this seems to be more authentic Mexican without much American influence (can be bad or good). Many seafood type dishes, etc. Really not many gripes, but I won't be back for above reasons. Kudos to Eric and his team. Killer grande golden margaritas are perfectly blended with a nice pour of tequila. Chunky style guac is full of fresh ingredients. Their salsa is outstanding. I cannot say enough great things about Los Portales! I was having a large family gathering. Ten of the Sixteen we're coming from out of state. They all are big Taco fans. So I decided to order re-fried beans, Mexican Rice, Picco de Gallo, their house green sauce and their very hot hot sauce. Eric was SO helpful and informative but most of all so kind and patient with me asking a million questions. When I picked up it was all ready on time, piping hot and they even carried it to my car. The place looks amazing. I love the decorations on the ceilings and everywhere around and I love all the corona signs and the coronitas salt and pepper shakers. Went with my family of 6 and they all thought the food was amazing no complaints all around. We had the guacamole which was delicious and flavorful. The salsa Verde and rojo was delicious. I found it! The perfect Mexican restaurant in Middletown. I ordered the Pork Dobalos and they were amazing. Hot, fresh, and quick to the table. We Door Dashed from Los Portales today. Pros: --We received our food well before the ETA. --The chips are insanely fresh and well seasoned. --My hubby said his burrito is very good. Cons: --We ordered two sides of guacamole, but we received two 1/2 cup servings of pico mixed with maybe a tablespoon of avocado? It was good, but for $4.99 per order, I'd rather we had been charged for pico and not guacamole, since that's basically what we received. --The salsa has zero flavor other than that of a tin can. Our food was a solid 2.5-3 stars. We'll probably give this place another shot in the future. Hopefully dining at the restaurant proves to be a more positive experience. read more

This is the best Mexican restaurant that we have found in the area. Great food as well as great service. We have always had the same server and he is great! I have had the Nachos as well as the steak fajitas both of which are great. They make the presentation of the food look great! At our visit on Saturday, we were disappointed to learn they are now charging for chips and salsa . . . given the pandemic, I don't mind . . . but I hope that they will go back to making them complimentary.
