When visiting family in Ponca, and wanted Mexican food, my Son found this place on Yelp, place looked nice enough, the fajitas were terrible, like mush mixed food thrown together and brought on the traditional skillet, you couldn't tell the meat from the chicken or beef, appeared ground, tasted terrible, could be cost effective for them. Let's get this review underway. Chips and salsa, chips are from a bag and salsa from a can, but good. Order a medium Texas margarita, good but tastes like every other margarita at every other Mexican restaurant. I ordered the enchilada verde. 2 beef and 1 chicken. The enchiladas are good and the rice and beans are... well... there rice and beans. Now the stars, 1 star for the place being clean. And I don't think it's just because of the coronavirus, you can look at the floors and tell that they keep this restaurant pretty clean. 1 star for the food, I mean, it's good, not great and not terrible.. just good. 1 star for the service. "Only after I had finished a pitcher of margaritas" Good dining in Ponca City just doesn't exist, anymore. On Sundays it looks like every restaurant (non- corporate chain) that is open, is a buffet for the all you can eat diners. And, the three or four of them that are open are packed. Los Portales is no different, the parking lot was full. I didn't realize they offered a buffet until we walked in. However, you can order from the menu. That's what we did, and after seeing the buffet, I am sure our dining experience would have been much worse had we tried the buffet. Even though we ordered off the menu the buffet deserves a description for those that may be interested. It is essentially a taco bar with a few other items. It is small, way too small for the number of all you can eat diners enjoying it. After looking at it, there was absolutely nothing that appeared appetizing. One word description "trough." But, at least you could make your own version of their mediocre food. Since, the buffet was the big draw there; I was a little worried about getting service from ordering off the menu. Surprise! The service was prompt and the food was delivered in minutes after ordering. It was hot and fresh. No problems here! This is a light to no spice Mexican restaurant, from the salsa to the meals. The chips had been reheated so many times they were turning a dark brown. You should be getting the picture by now. I won't drag you through a description of every item on our plates, but he meat in the enchiladas and tacos were bland, the chili relleño was pathetic. To be fair, nothing here tasted bad (well maybe the chips), but nothing here would bring me back or cause me to recommend it. For Mexican in Ponca City, I like the place on 14th much more than the restaurant at the airport or Los Portales. Okay as the other Yelp reviewer mentioned is it the greatest restaurant in ponca? maybe no but maybe yes! I got the enchilada supremas it's a combination of four enchiladas and nothing more. bean cheese beef and chicken, the chicken was certainly not my favorite but the others were flavorful the enchilada sauce was good. How they prepared the corn tortillas (of the enchiladas) was absolutely fantastic. I did get a side of guacamole which was a little too filled with onions to really impart a great guacamole flavor the chips were crispy and I like that. Nice interior but the food is HORRIBLE! Before we sat down the waiter asked us if we wanted queso. I asked if it was extra which he said no. 7.99 added to our bill! If it had been good I wouldnt have been as upset but truthfully elmers glue has more flavor. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas. What he received was 2 flour tortillas with the same queso inside and the flavorless tomato sauce. The salsa only tasted of tomato, no other seasonings or onion or cilantro. I ordered a bud light which said special draft for $5. I received a bottle for $4 despite asking for salt and lime. I would have taken this up with our waiter but he didnt seem to understand anything we asked thus far. As Mexican restaurants go, this was one of the worst! I was in Ponca City to drop someone off and used Yelp to help me find a good place to eat. With only 1 review, and 5 stars, I decided to check it out for myself. The lunch menu ranged from $5 - $7.99 which makes me happy. I got the combination chicken and beef fajitas for $7.99. They were incredible. The salsa was also excellent. The fajitas did not come on a skillet, but on a plate, but the flavor was out of this world. The waiters and waitresses were busting arse and very attentive. When I needed something, I asked anyone that was passing by and they would bring it, like more salsa and tortilla bread. The interior was pretty neat with TVs and different Spanish/cowboy themes. Great food. You MUST start with tortilla appetizer--thick, fluffy and flavorful--add salt and butter and it's comfort food. I like hot things but found the salsa to be too hot. I added some sour cream to it and enjoyed it. Excellent service. It is at the airport--literally. Plenty of seating but odd ambiance. Great views of the airstrip. Too often do I run to bad Mexican food and I'm never pleased after. To start we had the chips and tomato sauce, I asked for a salsa with a little more kick was pleasantly surprised with what the brought me. It could've been blended a little more throughly but again the taste was there. The chips weren't bad. The guacamole we had (large portion) was a good size for two adult males and couple well with the spicier salsa he'd brought out. Now to where the meal took a turn for the worst. The fajitas. Which he highly recommended. They were dry and burnt. It looked as though the residual crap from the grill was how they seasoned their meat. Awful. Just awesome! This is the place you want in your own hometown that is your family go-to place! What a shame I don't live nearby! My plate had a tostada with beans, chicken, guacamole, and sour cream, along with a manageable sized chicken chimichanga covered in queso and a huge side of rice. It was all delicious! Servers were friendly and made certain my dining companion was able to navigate her gluten-free constraints with some cheese enchiladas in green sauce. I think if you're in Ponca City there are a couple of pretty good Mexican choices, but unfortunately I will never know about the other one because I will choose Los Portales every time. The service was great, the food came out really fast lol almost to fast! I had the Molcajete and it was awesome.
