My first order after new ownership: Online order system is very easy to use. My order was ready about 15min early; I did place it before they opened. Food was as well packaged as ever, and as hot as ever. Not the same feeling of aloha as from the previous owners, who were the nicest people! In the online order system I specified green sauce, to offset my food sensitivity to nightshades. I didn't bother to open the containers until I got home. I was given red sauce. Big disappointment with the chile relleno. They are using a different recipe, which is fine on its own, but is about half the size of the previous relleno, and using a hotter pepper. I'll give them another try in a couple of weeks. It's still good Mexican food and close to home. read more

This is more of a stand as opposed to a restaurant. The food is good though. The burrito with beef was stuffed and was enough for two meals. The chicken quesadilla had plenty of cheese and chicken. A good place to eat to fill you up and not break the bank. read more

I've been enjoying their food since the 90's, back at their original location in Kawaihae as "Tres Hombres" where on your birthday you wore their big sombrero, were served deep fried ice cream and the entire smiling staff would sing Happy Birthday. When they moved to the Waikoloa kiosk, renamed as Los Tres Mex in 2011, I followed the family as it was the best mexican food on the island and they were just so extremely nice!! I went in a few weeks back to enjoy my absolute favorite, their infamous humongous fresh fish taco with homemade dill sauce, which had tasted the exact same for decades. To say I was very disappointed is an understatement, I'm heartbroken...an end of an era fursure. I was served 2 very small tacos: 2 pinky size pieces of unseasoned fish in each taco, flour tortillas no longer grilled, a pinch of cabbage and way too much cotija cheese. I was unaware of owner/management changes until this last week when a friend said he had the same disappointing experience and gave me the scoops. read more

I was so disappointed the last time I visited Los Tres Mex. The enchiladas were so dry that we couldn't eat them. We threw them in the trash. Tres Mex was our go-to Mexican restaurant for years. An unassuming place in Waikalao village. It's a small mom and pop shop run in a food court setting in a strip mall. They have a good menu with combinations, burritos and quesadillas as well as specials like fajitas and tacos. Jarritos, Mexican coke and horchata are on offer too. Their service is fast and they make food on order in disposable containers. Tasty and piping hot food that exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend! read more

This place has been in my rotation when I'm back home for ages and for good reason. Ever since they had a location whether in waikoloa or Waimea it's been nothing but greatness! This place seemed new (no idea if it actually is), but the area definitely looked freshly built and super quiet. We stopped by for a late lunch after a beach morning and it was totally empty. The woman taking our order was so sweet and friendly. Such a nice change from some of the other service we experienced on the island. She actually seemed happy to be there, which was refreshing. Food: The nachos? Nope. Not good. Wouldn't get them again. But the bean burrito? Soooo good. Super flavorful and actually filling. That definitely saved the meal. The taco salad was also good, but would suggest getting it without the greens. If I'm ever back on the Big Island, I'd come here again for the burrito! read more

Quality: first class. The cheeses, sauces, vegetables, etc, were superb. I have to confess, I felt honored to even go there. This felt like a top star restaurant making a "take home" dish. I'm sorry that I sound like I'm gushing. I don't write many reviews. The chef has "the touch", knows what he is doing. I don't know them. I don't think of Nachos as fine food. Ordered the "birria" and steak street tacos for taco Tuesday, I've eaten just about every birria place on island and many other places on the mainland. This is just beef they took from their beef burrito put it on a tortilla and called it birria. No cheese no consome. I've made it myself and its 10x better. Just follow any birria recipe on the internet. I actually like trex mex eat there often but this just seems lazy and careless. also 3 ramekens for 9 tacos is not enough. Response to owners reply: This isn't traditional birria, you did not cook it the traditional way you just took meat from your burrito and called it birria, so why are we acting like this is traditional. Also birria is traditionally made with goat. I dont see what the difference is between birria and your beef tacos. I was charged extra for no reason. Birria is traditionally slow cooked in a broth with guajillo, ancho, and Pasilla chiles with many different spices. This is not that. Why act like it is and charge for it? read more

This restaurant is located in a small food court of a mixed use complex. We arrived at noon (their opening time), but they weren't open yet. About 5 minutes later, a man came out and rolled up the metal gate. We were ready to order because the menu was posted outside the gate, however he didn't acknowledge us or ask to take our order.
