Last year it was called Alebrije Hawaii. My wife's tacos were inedible. Small dried out pieces of what ever on a dry taco with a little cilantro on top. A small non-descript little bowl of guacamole with some chips which seemed to come from a store bought bag. Last year we had a great experience with a wonderful soup that was no longer on the menu and real tasty guacamole with warm chips. We cannot recommend this restaurant at all. Check out Tommy Bahamas nearby for a much better experience. This shopping center has been a sad version of itself after COVID. It does have a wonderful Foodland market with just about anything you want. (Much better than the market at Queen's at Waikoloa. read more

My wife and I returned for lunch yesterday to "Tequilas" or "Alebrije Mexican Restaurant & Bar". There were about 5 others in the restaurant. We ordered a 'happy hour' margarita that was about 70% ice and tasted weak. My wife had the chicken enchiladas. They were cold and hard, but they had okay flavor. I ordered the fish tacos. My three tacos together had about 1 ounce of fish. They had fresh toppings and salsa and decent flavor, but the value just wasn't there. Sadly, it seems that this restaurant prepares food ahead of time and it's not always hot upon delivery. The $6 chips and salsa were good (well, the green salsa was good, the chips just average to below average). Their fajitas aren't even sizzling according to the menu. I guess they're not counting on repeat customers. We won't be returning. read more

The service was friendly but seemed like they could be overwhelmed if more than 5 tables were filled. The food, it's just ok honestly. Being from a southern mainland state, we have lots of Mexican places to eat at and this place was honestly bottom tier compared to those but I understand this is a different place. We visited for a late lunch and my husband wanted tacos, after a disappointing experience at the hotel the day prior. The restaurant was slow. We were the only guests before a large party arrived. We came bc of a post a couple of weeks prior of a salad. When we inquired about it the management seemed puzzled and said they didn't offer it. I ordered a pink guava margarita. It was super potent. The burrito bowl was good but the portion was tiny. The kids had a quesadilla kids meal. It came with three small quesadillas made with a corn tortilla. It wasn't what they were used to. We asked for salsa with our tacos but didn't realize it was an additional $4 charge. We were shocked to discover our total for tacos, and bowl, two kids meals, and a margarita was more than $120. The chips and salsa were $13 for a plate with three extremely small salsas... I felt like this was pretty stingy, the salsas also weren't refillable.. we had to pay $4 for more salsa for EACH type, so the total for our chips and salsa, which is typically complementary at Mexican restaurants, was $21.... I tried the poblano tacos, which I felt was also very stingy on the poblanos peppers, the taco was full of sautéed onions. The poor owner explained several staff members called out so he and the bartender were running wild waiting on tables, making drinks and running food. The food was delicious. The guac was fresh, light and the perfect amount of like cilantro and avocado. The red salsa was smoky and really unique in a good way. The verde salsa was also very tangy and tasty. We all had tacos. The carne asada and the poblano chicken. Favorite definitely the chicken but both were loved by all. The poblano peppers were sliced and sautéed like fajita style. The crispy cheese lining on the fresh grilled tortillas added a depth of texture and flavor. Diego the bartender was doubling up on making us spicy margaritas and Cadillacs Margaritas and running food orders. We were wanting Mexican food and came across this restaurant on yelp and it was close by so we decided to try it. The restaurant is upstairs in a corner of a strip mall. No sign really and not welcoming at all. We walked in and the restaurant immediately gave off bad vibes and we should have left but we were hungry so we stayed. The food is beyond overpriced even for Hawaii. The guacamole looked and tasted like it came out of a package. The rice was hard and probably a couple of days old. They charged $6 for a Diet Coke and $6 for a refill. There was only one other group eating lunch. Another group came in sat down and then got up and left 10 minutes later. It looked like there was one server and one cook and that's it. Very understaffed. The cook brought our food to the table covered in sweat. It was beyond disgusting. Beware. If you like Mexican food and are familiar with it, please don't go here. It is awful. Stay away from the chips: $13 for a small amount of over-fried chips and very bland salsa; I've never had worse. There were 12 of us in the party, and none of us enjoyed the meal that we received. The food came out very promptly, but it was because much of it was microwaved we assume. The battered fish tacos had a soggy outside and steaming hot inside because they were very clearly microwaved. The quesadillas were rubbery and also looked as if they were microwaved. If you want something to choke on order the chicken which was drier than sand and tasted old. I kept on telling my son to dip his chicken tacos into the salsa because I was worried he couldn't swallow it, but the salsa was so awful he refused. I just didn't want him to choke. I could keep going but you get the idea. There was not one component of any of our meals that was enjoyable. The restaurant was almost empty which is not surprising (the restaurant below it was full). We were attracted to this place because it had OK reviews and there were a couple members in our party who needed to eat gluten-free, but don't be attracted to this place because of the gluten-free availability! It would be much better to go somewhere else that had a couple options but actually tasted good. The reason for two stars was because the server was nice enough although fairly deceitful when he was being "helpful". Don't be fooled about mix and matching your tacos, because you will be up charged. He told us we could order the triple taco plate and mix and match. He did not mention, however, that each taco would be upgraded to $10 apiece if we did so. Thankfully, we caught it before he put in our order. The kid's meals were 15 or $16 apiece and not the $10 that I saw here on yelp. My party all agreed that we would have much rather gone somewhere slightly more expensive and gotten some food that was actually enjoyable.
