This was on my list of must tries during our weeklong vacation on the Big Island. How cute was our first impression. The footprint reminded us of a farmhouse. We were greeted and seated immediately. We live on Oahu but the last two years we've flown to Kona for a staycation. Two years ago we discovered this restaurant and this year, as soon as we landed, we headed there. We arrived about half an hour after they opened and only had to wait about 10 minutes for our party of 7 to be seated. The restaurant was full and stayed that way the entire time we were there. We knew from our visit last year that everything here was really good. We didn't do any pupus this year only because last year when we did we had way too much food. My honey and I shared the platter again, as we did last year, and it came with two sides plus pulled pork, brisket, a rib, and their homemade sausage. I also got a side of their cornbread because it's so good. My nephew got the cheeseburger and that was actually a very good burger. There was a lot of flavor in the meat. It also has a homey feel to it all. The portions were good sized and the value was fair for Hawaii. We had brisket mac (good and heavy), pulled pork sandwich, brisket sandwich, and fresh ono platter blackened (excellent). The brisket was very good as you would expect! The host was very friendly, however our waitress was not very kind. We all have bad days though and it is a tough job. Overall, worth checking out on the Big Island and food was very good. I was recommended to check this place out so I went out with family. Overall experience was great! I had ordered the brisket plate which had a reasonable price! I'm personally a big brisket guy so I was happy to see that my cut passed the finger bend test, and almost fully broke apart when trying to conduct the operation! Unfortunately for my girlfriends brothers cut didn't necessarily match mine but was still "good" per his word. The menu is vast, and I'm sure it could meet the wants of many in the population. My girlfriend ordered a salad which looked great and the picture doesn't do justice so just take my word for it. As a side note the only thing that I could consider changing would've been the beans which felt a little undercooked but as small of an adjustment that could've been, doesn't necessarily dictate the experience especially since the mac n cheese made up for it and its stringy goodness made me forget about the beans itself, and don't get me started on the sweet potato fries they were delicious! Anywho the staff was great, very professional, and friendly. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that loves BBQ style food and has a big appetite, in addition to the comforting and cleanliness of the establishment itself. The daily tater tots were fine but weren't hot, and all of the meat in the BBQ sampler plate was so dry that I only ate a few bites. The onion soup was heavy on peppers and not good. It's just very solid BBQ. It's cute and quaint and very much the style of Waimea. There is almost always a wait, and you can see why when you come. The food and the cocktails are just really dang good. I didn't get photos of all the food, because my family was digging in before I could get photos. We got the brisket, and it was some of the best I've had. (And I used to live in Texas) The fries are really fresh and unique. Definitely not like a typical restaurant fry. The French onion soup and gumbo were spectacular! Absolutely amazing. So deep with flavor, it's like a flavor bomb in your mouth. The BBQ sauces are all unique. I love the crackseed, it's tangy and not super sweet. The only complaint, we got the fresh fish of the day and had it panko crusted. It was very fishy, and almost inedible to someone sensitive to that flavor. The service was good. Our server was friendly and helpful. The host Tamara was unbelievably sweet and accommodating. Every time we eat here we always leave saying we've got to come back again. Everything we've eaten from here has been amazing! I did have to come back on here though and review the desserts. I read a few reviews on here saying that the chocolate cake wasn't that great and was dry. That wasn't our experience at all! It was dense and moist and so chocolatey. It was amazing! We also tried the banana cream pie since we kept hearing raves about it. Most of us don't even like banana cream pie but it was incredible!!! And of course the coconut cake is amazing as well. We tried a coconut cake at another restaurant after we had eaten this one and it didn't even compare. We were disappointed and made a point to come back to the Fish and Hog so we could have a piece of the coconut cake here. If only we could recreate these desserts back home! The Fish and The Hog made for a fantastic nice lunch in Waimea during our full day outing. Malia was a great server who offered a variety of recommendations. The Rueben spring rolls were delicious with house smoked pastrami adding a tasty twist. The Ono sandwich was the special, which was good but not great like everyone had raved about when Ono is an option. I would highly recommend the maple bourbon smash as a drink option! It was strong with great flavor as the brown sugar maple syrup really stood out. I found the restaurant to have great ambiance with a BBQ joint style vibe and decor which I found awesome given the ranches out towards that side of the island. I do not know how this restaurant is averaging a 4.5 review... this is literally the best bbq I have ever eaten. We went here with 3 adult men - one of them from Texas - and all 3 of us said that what we ate was the best version of that dish we'd ever had. I tried the mac and cheese with brisket and a piece of cornbread. All unbelievably delicious. One friend tried the brisket with something else - he's the Texan - and said it was the best he'd ever eaten. The other friend tried the special, which was a Cuban sandwich, and the ham on it was out of this world delicious. To top it all off, our server was stellar. Lexi (sorry if it's spelled wrong) was so helpful telling us her favorite dishes upon request, and steered us in all the right directions. Plus, she was friendly and funny, knowledgeable and sincere - the perfect southern belle herself. We all loved everything about this experience. Hearing the many raves about this unassuming BBQ place, we drove up the big hill from the Waikoloa area with a big appetite and hopeful expectations. We were greeted in the warmest way by the best hostess upon arrival. It was one of those noteworthy things, where a person is so welcoming and sincere, it's memorable long after the experience. Expectations remained high. After the briefest of wait, we were seated in the main dining area and offered drinks and menus. This is where each of us were faced with a tremendous challenge of what to order, because the selections all sounded so good. Do we go with the panko crusted fish & chips? The Mac & Cheese entree, and if so which meat (brisket, pulled pork, chicken)? A classic BBQ plate with 2 sides? A Reuben Sandwich? A Blackened Fish Plate? Decisions, Decisions... In the end, we opted for the BBQ Sampler plate and shared it. We figured this way we could get BBQ Brisket, Pulled Pork, Sausage, Ribs and sides of Cornbread & Sweet Potato fries...all in one go. Once the sampler arrived (which was before our Brussels Sprouts appetizer) we determined that both the Pulled Pork & Brisket were stunners and exactly as you would hope it could be. We've had our share of incredible smoked meats, and these are easily competitive with any of them. The table has a variety of sauces to add to your heart's content. There was a Crackseed BBQ Sauce, a sweeter Lilikoi Gold, and a more classic Paniolo BBQ sauce. I liked sampling them all, though I prefer and recommend the Paniolo. Back to the sampler...The Sausage part of the entree was also very good, but the Ribs were only so-so, which made us Sad. They just seemed a little dry to us, though maybe they just paled in comparison to the other items. The Brussels that arrived a touch belatedly were also really, really good. They are deep fried, crispy, and come with great seasoning and a dipping sauce. We loved our experience here, and splitting the protein-heavy entree with the added appetizer was plenty for us, which made the overall value excellent.
