I'm a little bit of a coffee snob, this place has some of the best coffee I've tried in Chicago. Whenever I go to a new coffee shop I always try their espresso by itself first before I decide on getting other drinks, the espresso here is fenomenal. Coffee extraction is simply the process of dissolving ground coffees with hot water, simple right? Well, yes. In order to get that perfect tasting cup of coffee, there is some science that goes to this. The ratio of water to coffee, the precision of your grind, the roast of the coffee, the temperature of the water, and the amount of time that the water is in contact with your coffee are just a few of the things that go into coffee extraction, Lost Larson got all those things just right and offer a great cup of Joe. I can't say much about their pastries since I haven't tried them but their coffee sure is great! read more

I agree with many of the reviews here - Lost Larson is delicious, but expensive. I would eat these pastries every day if I could. The cheddar kale scone is incredible, and I also love the lemon blueberry tart. I recently tried their almond cake, and it was delicious as well. All of their pastries are masterfully made. This is a great place to come for a special treat, but too expensive to add to my list of regular stops. For reference, I came in to get a scone, tart, and latte for the hefty price of around $18. read more

This is my favorite bakery. It's a beautiful space. Excellent decor and atmosphere and the pastries are to die for. And if you're looking for traditional Swedish baked goods you're in the right place. I've never had anything I wasn't raving about. I'd suggest getting the cheese scone which was delicious. In addition, between my wife and I, we had the cinnamon roll and almond croissant which were great, too. The place has a European vibe and a nice outdoor patio which is where we sat. It's a great place to grab a pastry, tea and read the paper on a weekend. We gave Lost Larson a try this morning on their soft opening weekend and... we loved it! The interior of the bakery is just beautiful. Elegant, simple, and warm. The staff is very friendly and attentive. This is a phenomenal addition to Andersonville. We had breakfast with a chocolate croissant and cheddar scone - both very good. We also got a loaf of whole wheat bread home. It was still warm... and super yummy - I highly recommend it. We will be back to try more baked goods after their grand opening. read more

Completely Lost on overpriced goods with attitude. Immediately turned off by staffs attitude. A sort of snobbery. It almost killed him to tell me how the avocado toast was prepared. Two lattes one slice of avocado toast with "seasonal vegetables" and one cinnamon roll. $30 bucks with tax and tip. We liked the food. It was decent. Dine in and they don't bother to bring you your stuff. Come and get it. Stood by register to order loaf of bread to go for 5 mins and was asked to step aside while they rang another patron up. I told her I was waiting to order a loaf and I got a look. Walked back to my table in frustration and to finish my meal. Needless to say, she never cared I walked away without a loaf! Lost for life! The space is good and the service was fine. I don't think the baked goods were anything special and were expensive for a neighborhood bakery. I ordered 3 different things to get a good sample of the products and in my opinion all three were overbaked. Maybe it was a bad day for the baker or maybe that is the product they typically produce. I've been waiting for a bakery that can rival the ones in Europe that I enjoy so much and sadly Lost Larson is not it. read more

This new A'ville bakery brings a quaint, bright, inviting space to the neighborhood and offers truly excellent and all exquisitely homemade treats. Today I had the almond lingonberry cake and it was the perfect blend of sweet and tart. But Lost Larson can satisfy more than your sweet tooth- with fresh breads and small, open-faced sandwiches as other menu options. Another customer came in whilst I was enjoying my morsel of cake and asked if they happened to sell any low fat items. Normally I'd be with him in his quest to be healthier. But, in this instance, I say calories be damned! A trip to Lost Larson is worth the few extra minutes in the gym. Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

I was happy to discover a new Swedish bakery in Andersonville. I stopped by yesterday and ordered 3 cardamom rolls and 2 slices of princess cake which are traditional Swedish sweets. The cardamom roll was different than any cardamom bun I've had before because it was flat and cookie like. It also was crispier than I anticipated and almost had the consistency of a croissant but it tasted delicious! The princess cake was made in the traditional Swedish fashion and also tasted pretty darn good. Overall I thought the bakery was wonderful and with COVID they seem to have figured out a great way to handle curbside with limited contact. I'd give 5 stars except that I ordered 3 cardamom buns and when I got home I realized I only received 2. read more

Thanks to Lost Larson for putting out a nice variety of Swedish style pastries! Enjoyed the Princess Torta and Lingon Berry muffin with coffee at the bakery and took home a loaf of Limpa bread. This place is definitely "Meh. I've experienced better." I really wanted to like this place and have been several times, trying something different each time. Overall, the prices are terrible and the flavors are poor. My thought is that the specially ground flour basically covers up any flavor while also inflating the prices. However, even if the prices were cheaper it would still not be good quality food. Here's a rundown of some more specific thoughts. Negatives: - Duchess cake: not much flavor. Tasted like eating unflavored, highly whipped fondant. Very small. The press claims that this is their take on the princess cake, but the only similarities are the color and shape. - Lingonberry almond cake: the bottom half of the cake was completely raw while the upper half was completely dry and flavorless. This is something they carry everyday, so there are no excuses for why it wasn't properly cooked! - Cardamom bun: very dry and not much cardamom - Chocolate spelt cookie: nice texture but has so little flavor it's more like a Bisquick drop biscuit your grandparents would make than a cookie. - Croissants (applies to the several I've tried): not bad at all and pretty good, but the ones they sell at Coffee Studio, which are made by Bennison's in Evanston, are cheaper and better. - Various pastries made with seasonal ingredients: pretty blah and all taste the same regardless of ingredients. Positives: - The teas are very good. - The tebirkes are by far the best thing I have had from there and the one item that I would order a second time. - The interior is quite nicely and trendily designed. - The staff here are all very friendly and helpful. Absolutely no complaints about them! I am rooting for this place to get better. read more

Just tried their Cardamom Bun and Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant. The croissant is probably the best pastry I have had in my entire life. It was amazing! All the pastries we tried were incredibly fresh and well made. The decor inside the bakery is very nice...modern, simple, classic. You feel like you really found one of the neighborhood gems. I was elated to read about Lost Larson. For decades, I'd motor from downtown to Andersonville to Swedish Bakery to buy egg bread, cardamom coffee cake, Asiago bread, and limpa rye. I wasted no time schlepping to Lost Larson after reading about the owner's efforts to create authentic Swedish baked goods. I paid $8 for a loaf of what the girl insisted was limpa rye, and when I paid with plastic, was presented with an iPad asking me to choose from 3 levels of gratuity. So happy not to have to drive to Evanston for limpa rye, I added a tip. Well! The dark bread they sold me is not limpa rye, it's not sweet, if you like dark bread, maybe you'd like it, but it's very disappointing, and overpriced. Lost Larson, what do you lose by not offering limpa rye? It would sell like hotcakes. The girl was courteous, nobody was rude to me, if you want rude treatment, go to Floriole on Webster, they always deliver on that, but the assertion that Lost Larson sells limpa rye is falling-down dead wrong. No danger of me returning. read more

This place is nothing short of lovely. A unique blend of extraordinarily classy "sidewalk-cafe meets wine-bar." Charming and inviting are understatements. Having lived in both Sweden & France, I speak with experience on the following..Unlike other U.S. cafes & wine bars that (unsuccessfully) aim for uniqueness with thinly disguised laziness ("this is how it's done in France!"), Lost Larson focuses on offering a classy customer experience without the attitude. The two-tops offer enough room to sit comfortably whilst maintaining that charming European style intimacy. The lighting is amazing - calming and cheery at the same time. Down to the smallest detail, tiny porcelain vases with equally tiny fresh flowers on each table, this place is exquisite. There are no vegan breads or pastries (yet, fingers crossed), BUT delicious vegan options from the chef after 5:00pm to pair with a superior choice of fine Western European and California wines. The concept is cute where staff wear unnecessary fancy uniforms serving delicious coffee beverages. The avocado toast is fresh and delicious. BUT. Where are the vegan options? No vegan muffins or scones or anything fun for the many of us who can't indulge in that dope buttery croissant. So I don't come here ever! Beware. This pricey place doesn't list all the ingredients in its offerings, which means that when I ordered what I thought was a savory turkey sandwich, it turned out to have a disgustingly sweet rhubarb jam on it. I discovered this when I bit into it on the way home and had to throw it away. I contacted the bakery via email, and although I received an apology for the inadequate ingredient signage in the shop, there was no offer to compensate me for my $10 loss. We had cappuccinos, an almond croissant and a beet, strawberry and goats cheese danish. All were incredible! The almond croissant is among the best I've had- super flaky pastry, not too sweet, the perfect amount of filling. They use Stumptown coffee and the person making it really knew what she was doing. Very happy to have a new bakery in the neighborhood. So far I've tried the cheddar kale scone, the almond croissant, the cinnamon roll, and the 50% rye loaf. All were delicious. My bakery definitions/expectations are slightly different from theirs, which I will explain in case you are like me. The scone was more of a biscuit texture, dense and moist - an amazing biscuit, just below sadly departed Endgrain (I still long for those biscuits) on the biscuit spectrum. The almond croissant was very crispy/flaky, with just the right amount of almond filling to be part of every bite without being cloying and overpowering. The cinnamon roll - sigh - was my only disappointment. I was so excited when I saw illustrations of cinnamon rolls on the window during build out. A cinnamon roll is a thing of beauty, and next to sticky buns, the highest expression of American Breakfast Pastry. Sadly they make a cinnamon roll out of laminated dough rather than yeast dough. So it is a croissant with cinnamon and sugar. Tasty, sure, but if you, like me, desire a bready cinnamon roll, you will be disappointed. I will continue looking for proper cinnamon rolls in Chicago. (And good lord, a proper sticky bun! Not a pecan roll.) I would be super happy if instead of a croissant/cinnamon roll hybrid they made a full on kouign-amann, they have the skills and talent to pull it off! The rye loaf is also delicious. The outside is crusty, the inside chewy, almost sticky, the flavor rich. I wish it was a taller loaf though, as it is not well shaped for supporting sandwich fillings, but excellent with butter or spreads. The ingredients and execution are top notch, so you will pay top notch prices. Quality costs money. On my budget, a splurge, but one I am happy to make. read more

WARNING: NO WIFI. I was disappointed to find that out after plunking down $11 for a cappucino and slice of banana bread. The drink was good, the banana bread good but not $6 good. All that said, the place is beautifully decorated with marble tables, and it smelled amazing in there. Most of the baked goods looked beautiful. Savory ham and cheese was lightly filled, felt like a missed opportunity for serious tastiness.
