Ten of us came here for breakfast at 8:30 Sunday morning. They were very accommodating and we all sat together comfortably in the back. The ceilings are lined with beautiful sheets of live edge cedar that reminded us of bacon :-) There is a taxidermy elk on the wall. It has a cozy vibe. There were a lot of people there. It's obviously a popular place. And we could see why. The menu was simple but had nice breakfast options, including a number is breakfast taco options, and a very nice western omelet. They also had biscuits and sausage gravy, pancakes, and a few other options. They are fully staffed and the kitchen kicked out dishes with great speed. We were well taken care of. I'm glad we came. The local park (Utopia Park) was closeby so we went there afterward. Limited options and food received was just okay. Kids corn dog was frozen in the middle and steak fingers were way over done. They did remedy the corn dog situation quickly though. Cute inside. This place is really charming, but it sucks that the service and the food isn't better. We came here for breakfast, but apparently they do "limited menus" so we could only pick between eggs, toast, biscuits, hash browns, home potatoes, bacon, or ham. I originally came out here because I saw pancakes in previous reviews and was in the mood for pancakes. The food was mediocre and it's disappointing that a small town country place serves you artificial butter spread & premade frozen hash browns. The customer service and speed of receiving your order needs work. They also got our order wrong which no big deal, we still ate it. Amazing interior and exterior! The place was so cool especially the booth area. It's like you are in different place. The food was okay - I don't think so we were able to really have a choice in picking a food we wanted because the server gave us a menu that's so limited. We thought it was what it's supposed to be then we checked other table and they have the menu that so much more. We were from hike when we went here so we were starving. We didn't really get a good experience especially from our server who gave us an attitude and we went out of the place wondering what just happened. Rustic, sprawling diner-esque cafe in tiny Utopia. Open on Sundays = miraculous, so it was perfect after our hike in the State Natural Area. I had a deliciously cheesy patty melt, smoking hot, and my spouse had the smaller chicken fried steak portion (two sizes: medium and large). He had it with fried okra to switch it up. The food was hot and fresh and very tasty. We also had a tiny bit of cake; it came in a little satellite cup! Not gonna over-eat on cake! They also were offering many pies but we didn't partake. Next time! They brought huge glasses of half-and-half sweet tea that we got to take with us. So, here's the deal. In a large city, Lost Maples Cafe would probably get a three star rating from me. But in a small town like Utopia, where options are very limited, it definitely shines brighter than the rest, so four stars seems more fair. The menu options are a bit limited but everything we ordered was freshly made and tasty, including the vegetable omelette, homemade biscuit, and the breakfast taco, served with a side of fresh salsa. Pies are very fresh, and the coconut meringue top and filling were among the most moist and freshest I've had in many years. It's worth coming here for the pie alone. The staff is friendly and create a family style atmosphere. Everyone in the place was relaxed and casual, embodying that small town feel that so many people seek to experience and recreate. We stopped here on the way back to Garner State Park. The outside is rustic and charming. The decor looked old and cluttered. Needed cleaning and dusting. The menu looked good. I ordered the chicken strips and sweet potato fries. The fries were very greasy and limp. The chicken strips were okay. The batter needed more browning. I was going to order dessert but the pies looked old and not appealing in the showcase. Not sure they are homemade. The staff were friendly, however the waitress stood behind the counter and picked her nose while we were looking at the menu. Would have left, but we were hungry. Utopia, a scenic one-hour drive from San Antonio, is home to...well...this cafe, a bar, and a cemetery. Perhaps the local chamber of commerce should coin the phrase, "Eat, Drink, and Die in Utopia!" But I digress; don't let the implied ennui of Utopia dissuade you from dropping by Lost Maples Cafe for an unpretentious burger, onion rings, a comforting plate of cheese enchiladas, or a slice of heavenly meringue pie. The burgers are nothing special, just juicy patties seared on a flattop and piled high with iceberg, tomatoes, white onion, and yellow mustard. The patties are too perfectly circular to be hand-pressed from fresh beef, suggesting that owners Rusty and Tacy Redden source their wares from Sysco. That's less of a criticism than it is an observation, because frozen beef is often just as tasty as fresh. On a recent visit, my dad spoke highly of his standard burger, comparing it favorably to the kind served at The Twin Kiss, a long-defunct diner in San Antonio owned and operated by his parents in the 1950s and 60s. The vegetation was fresh, the patty was well seasoned, and the buttery bun held its own against the meat juices, tomatoes, and mustard. Followers of mine know of my fetishistic obsession with onion rings. I write about onion rings so often that I could pen a doctoral dissertation on the alchemical Maillard reaction that occurs when onions are dredged in flour and deep fried. If by chance you are new to my page, however, then here's the lowdown: I expect nothing less than a shatteringly crisp batter speckled with cracked pepper and onions that teeter between soft/caramelized and crisp/astringent. The rings at Lost Maples Cafe come close to that standard, ranking among the top ten I've tried throughout the state of Texas. A little extra seasoning (pepper in particular) might catapult them to the top of the list. Comparing the Tex-Mex fare at a small town diner with the best Mexican joints in San Antonio would be like comparing the horsepower between a Model T and a Mustang. Having said that, my plate of cheese enchiladas was generous and comforting. The beef gravy -- chunky, surprisingly piquant, and undoubtedly homemade -- would have benefited from more cumin but was delicious nonetheless. The gooey American cheese was melted all the way through (a feat that "muy autentico" Tex-Mex joints occasionally fail to achieve), and the thinly sliced onions practically melted into the gravy-cheese mixture, imbuing it with an understated pungency. The accompanying Spanish rice was serviceable, but I damned the pasty, lukewarm refried beans back to the can from whence they emerged. Lost Maples Cafe does many things well, but their reputation as a pie destination rivals that of the Double R Diner from Twin Peaks. A slice of dense chocolate fudge pecan pie, still warm from the oven, scored high marks with a buttery, crumbly crust, a creamy, dark chocolate fudge base, and a generous helping of meaty Texas pecans. Even more impressive was a slice of lemon pie topped with a two-inch mound of meringue. The well-balanced custard (equal parts sweet and sour) was smooth and tasted of fresh lemon juice and lemon zest. The meringue bore no signs of weeping, suggesting that it had been stored properly at room temperature and in a draft-free location. Pro tip: order an extra slice and marry it at the justice of the peace across the street. If you live in Utopia, then you already know why Lost Maples Cafe has been a local favorite for almost forty years. If you're planning a trip to Garner State Park or have some other business nearby, then heed my recommendation and drop by for a friendly smile and a slice of pie. If you're a serial killer just passing through, then consider Victor Hugo's take on the concept of Utopia from "Les Miserables" (1862): "Utopia and pie today, flesh and blood tomorrow." The food is southern home cooking. The people are friendly and accommodating. The character of the place is spot on old school Texas back before the northern and western invasion. I have been coming to the Lost Maples Cafe for almost all of its existence. My family has vacationed in Utopia most of my life, now I bring my kids to this charming piece of Texas to show them how it used to be. We always ate at Lost Maples Cafe multiple times. My sister just moved to town so we stopped here to try a local place. It's open seating for lunch and smells SO GOOD inside. Everyone was very friendly and we received prompt service. I was recommended the patty melt with bacon and a side of homemade onion rings. The melt was juicy, cheesy and flavorful. It didn't taste like a "Normal" patty melt but don't let that deter you from ordering it. The bacon made it taste more breakfasty, so if you don't want that flavor don't put the bacon on! be the worst lunch I ever had in my life. I ordered the pepper steak which turned out to be two hamburger patties with the cheapest cheese, practically and two small jalapeño pieces. It also had a little bit of cheese on top of the two burgers.. This place used to be really good food even the coconut cream pie was awful. It was lumpy and runny and a very salty crust. Not only are you always greeted with a friendly hello and lovely smile as you walk through the door, but you also quickly realize this is the exact spot you want to be while visiting small-town Texas. There's nowhere to eat in Utopia, so if you're staying nearby I recommend going on a grocery run before you land. The French fries were so overcooked that it was like biting into a cigarette. I'm not fancy or picky about food but this place really could put some effort into what they're doing. We've been here three times and the food got progressively worse so we know it wasn't an "off" day. The only reason they get three stars is because they're consistently open and the servers are nice. read more

Took me a too long to finally make it in here. I am a native Texan with a family tree with roots that run into the battle of San Jacinto. Utopia is Texas. Lost Maples Cafe is Texas. I had basic breakfast. Bacon, eggs, potatoes and a biscuit. It was great. It was 7$ My potatoes were hand cut, my biscuit was homemade, my eggs were cooked perfectly and my bacon was thick and crispy and not microscopic like most places. I am glad to see some of Texas is still alive. Mask politics is predictable. In these remote counties of the Hill Country , with few cases, face coverings are optional. Just like Stockholm Sweden. Looks like Sweden and Texas have something in common. I know where to line up in an electric car , driving with a mask on, to have breakfast in Austin. I LOVED THIS PLACE! It's so cozy and they decorate for holidays and seasons. I feel like it's straight out of a cutesy country movie in here. This place is also so clean and smells so good. Servers were very nice and helpful. ALL of the food is served fresh. Immediately on first bite you can tell it's all homemade and made deliciously. We got the chips and salsa it was to die for. The steaks and patty melts have incredible flavor are tender and juicy. The onion rings and okra are fried perfectly. Lastly the salad was made with yummy fresh vegetables. It's a 10/10 for me.
