The service is hit or miss. More interest in cleaning up a table (and it was not crowded) than providing us with menus. The silverware packets had 2 knives in mine. When our food came, the onion rings were cold the burger was luke warm, and the grilled cheese/Black Forest Ham sandwich was missing the Black Forest ham. It was really good and hot, but no meat. By the time my corrected sandwich came out, my party was finished eating their food and my 2nd sandwich's bread was soggy from not having stayed in the griddle long enough. Do not eat here! Food was horrible, possibly spoiled. We both got sick I almost threw up on the drive home. We should have left when we walked in at 12:30 on a Saturday and the place was empty. Obviously the locals know to stay away. Pulled pork was flavorless and brisket was dry and tough and absolutely no smoke ring. Probably cooked in the oven. The napkin holder was dirty on all sides and sticky. The only positive was the decor. Absolutely Terrible!!!! If only I can give negative stars. For starters, I was met by a very surly and rude waitress behind the counter with a bad attitude toward out of town visitors. At her recommendation, I ordered the bbq brisket which appeared to be microwaved leftovers from the previous day. It was extremely dry, tough to cut and simply inedible. The food was delightful and very filling! The waitress was so sweet and very informative as we made selections. She told us ahead of time what they were missing (Covid delivery sucks as we know) so we could make a choice on food. We ordered the brisket melt with onion rings, loaded fries with pulled pork and queso and chips with brisket. The food was very good! Bear's Den in Leakey is a great, popular local bar and grill. I got the brisket quesadillas which were great. The fries were crispy and delicious. They serve beer and wine, not liquor, just a heads up. The food coming out from the kitchen all looked really good! If you are camping out at Garner State Park, head here, it's only 15 minutes away. Unexpected surprise. Super comfy place. Seat yourself at a proper table or one of several comfy couches. My daughter went to count bears around the place and found a spot in front of a tv with a remote to watch cartoons. Other kids joined her one by one. Food is decent. Burgers are good. Anything fried is done right. Most of the staff is nice and friendly. One person in particular wasn't exactly welcoming and friendly. Normally, you should greet a patron who comes into your business, not: grab the ticket book, then proceed to have a staring contest. This person reminded me before I exited , "enjoy your vacation." It really is a very nice place, but the one server tending bar and waiting tables was really busting her butt and doing a great job, but very overloaded. Most of the food like the Ruben was great. I had a BBQ plate. Coleslaw was average, scalloped potatoes were decent. Sausage was ok, but very basic. Brisket tasted like it was indoor oven cooked with no smoke or real flavor, and a bit dry. Here in this tiny town with a population of 425 people for work. Stayed here for 2 weeks. Came into the place 3 times. The first 2 times we were with a local resident and the waitress was awesome, treated us like we lived here and was tons of fun. Couldn't wait to get back here for a third visit. On the third visit we went in alone without the local guy. Wow. What a difference, we literally were treated like crap, she acted like she'd never seen us before. We desperately tried numerous times to make small talk and basically got ignored or short one word responses. Her boyfriend sat at the bar and it was obvious they were not getting along so she took it out on us. So then we decided to try and make small talk with the cook by complimenting the chicken sandwich and he was probably more rude then she was. If your here in this town and want some good food definitely go here, they will forget to bring items you ordered so you will need to do their jobs for them but still tastes good if your willing to work for it. If your looking for a place to get treated like crap, I 100% recommended this place. They will go out of their way to make you feel unwelcome for sure. Never again. read more

Visiting town and was excited to stumble upon this place- super cool concept and set up. Food was good. Service was almost comical. There was an argument over who was going to be our waitress, and we ended up with the lesser of the two. Didn't place half of our order in, yet tried to charge us for it, then we waited forever for our check. When approached to ask for our check, the "waiter" laughed, took a sip of her beer behind the bar, and said "I'm not your waitress." I ordered fried mushrooms and chicken tenders since I needed something quick but they use the same batter they use for the fish for everything else and it left a fishy taste in my mouth and it doesn't help that everything is fried the fries are good and the bread is also good. Great food and great service. I have to be gluten free due to medical issues. They have plate options and potato options with your meat choice for those of us avoiding gluten. What a nice surprise in Leakey! Took a little while to find it but it was well worth the hunt. Cool and comfy with tables and couches including cute bear and wildlife decor! Cool decor and atmosphere, and hubby's crispy chicken salad was good, but that's all I can say that's good. My silverware was dirty so I sent it back, no big deal, it happens, and after a few minutes of looking at my food I was given a new set. There was just one server for the entire place and she was running around like crazy but still could not handle it, and the place was not even close to full. When we needed anything we had to catch her mid-sprint. A manager was present but appeared to be focused on socializing with the few rather than taking care of the many. The worst part was that when speaking with the manager before leaving she blamed the problems we had on the server being new rather than take responsibility for anything herself. The menu options are good for a small town café, but just because it's on the menu doesn't mean you're going to get it. The Friday night special, as printed on the menu, was a 1/2 chicken with sides. I was served a leg quarter, no white meat. When I asked the server about it she said "Oh, you're right, that is a thigh and a leg." And she scurried away without another word, returning in a few minutes with another leg quarter to make up for the missing pieces. When I pointed out that I still had no white meat, she just said that they hadn't cooked any, all they had was dark meat, no apologies for not serving what was on the menu, and away she ran. Sorry to be a food snob, but I like white meat chicken. Fast forward to waiting for the ticket.....and waiting.....after almost staring down the staff, the manager finally came and asked if we needed anything and when we told her just the ticket she wanted to take our credit card and process payment without showing us the ticket!!! Nope, not gonna happen. We had to explain the problem to her (still no apology) and she agreed to comp for the chicken only and just charge for the sides, basically taking half off my meal. Whatever....I did eat the first serving of dark meat, but I didn't like it. This could be a really good place, especially for such a small town, if only the service was at an acceptable level and they served what was ordered, or at least apologized for not having it available. read more
