Tons of history with this location. Unfortunately I did not eat here but I hear it's a local favorite spot. I did stop by the general store and enjoy the many trinkets and original finds. They even have a working post office. They used to do business with the Ft that trined camels in the 1800's for the Army. Great subject to explore for history buffs. For my wife's birthday, she wanted to go to Camp Verde restaurant for brunch/breakfast. We took her brother and his wife, who have, miraculously not been to Camp Verde compound even after passing it by on their way to Bandera on many of their trips to the area. Anyway, it was a glorious day after 3 days of good soaking rain, which we badly needed in the hill country. The food has always been top notch grade here. The service is very efficient and professional. As for the ambience, the inside is bright and well lighted but to be impressed, you have to go outside. Since it was a glorious day of bright sunshine, coolish temperature and a very friendly breeze blowing, we had a time walking around the area. The surrounding area was lush and very green after the few days of rain! We had a lovely time taking pictures. My brother in law was very surprised about the camel story behind Camp Verde. Camels were used as experimental animals to carry provisions in the 1850's. They were stationed in this area. Unfortunately, the experiment failed because the soldiers hated the camels, who had a reportedly nasty disposition and soldiers ended up with motion sickness because of the animal's unusual walking gait. If you want to visit the area, now is a good time before the summer heat gets here. FYI, if you like Christmas, the gift shop here gets an early start in October! I've been to the Camp Verde General Store a couple of times and had been very much looking forward to trying the restaurant. Well, my husband and I finally came today. WOW!!! What an amazing experience. The hostesses were super nice and welcoming. Our server, Shannon, was top-freaken-notch! And the chef was as professional as he was nice. The food was incredible! The best truffle fries I have ever had, and I've had quite a few variations. The sandwiches were delicious and my husband said it was the best split pea soup he's ever had. Definitely our favorite eatery! Side note, the buildings and grounds are breathtaking. We will be coming back. If you come here, the easiest and quickest way to get seated is to reserve a table. Even if it's not during peak hours! The first time we came here, we waited 20 mins to even be recognized at the hostess table and then because we didn't have a reservation, it was yet another 25-30 mins to wait. Camp verde is our go to regularly. We love everything we've ever had here . My personal faves are fried pickles , mushrooms , onion rings and the oh lala sandwich. For dessert ? Although it is a drive from our area, it is worth the drive. The main dining area, food and service are excellent. Try to leave room for their desserts. It has a big shopping area next to the restaurant. The area around the restaurant grounds is very scenic. Two days prior, we drove past Camp Verde on our way to Fredericksburg and made a mental note to look it up. Intrigued, we decided to stop by for breakfast before beginning our journey home to Fort Worth. We arrived a little before opening and waited in our car before heading inside shortly after 8am. We were, of course, the first and only party seated. We ordered coffee, tea, the omelette, and the huevos rancheros. We were shocked that the omelette automatically comes with everything ingredients listed - we assumed it was a "pick what you like" type thing like at other spots. So my husband got everything, except the jalapeños. It was delicious! Well seasoned and each ingredient was cooked perfectly. The huevos rancheros were also delicious! Nice and crispy tortillas - but not crunchy, they were just perfect. Lots of flavor in the beans and salsa. Perfect bacon...and the potatoes! So crispy, fluffy, and nicely seasoned. We couldn't get over how tasty they were. Staff was friendly and attentive. The shop has lots of fun items, and the grounds were very pretty. First Class! The store is such a treat. Everyone is so pleasant and welcoming. The store is historic and rustic, but well stocked with a fabulous variety of gifts and salsas. The restaurant is elegant and a great menu. I ordered meatloaf and was surprised with nearly a pond of meat. Two sides with great portions. I'm not a Brussels sprouts fan, but I am after that side today! I asked for the chef to compliment him on his ability to change my mind about the sprouts. It has an interesting history as well if you're into that sort of thing. It's a clean restaurant with plenty of space. It is a bit echoey during times of high traffic. When we walked in for a birthday celebration meal,I was excited was I to see it was voted one of the 100 best restaurants in the country.It was established in the 1800's, maybe it was one of the best back then but certainly not now, not with all the great restaurants n ot only in this state, but in the country. That was neither browned or crispy. Just a pale pork chop. My son had a Chicken Fried steak. He's never been to some of the other restaurants in this area that serve really great ones. I ordered the taco salad , chips and queso while my children enjoyed the gluten free cheeseburgers. They have a wonderful selection of foods, desserts and café drinks. They even have specialty items for those looking for vegetarian or gluten free options. The scenery of the hill country outside to the beautifully designed architecture and decor inside is unmatched and stunning. While it's still ascetically pleasing the scene outside -creek and big trees and it appears clean inside - but the food was sub par the last few times ..ex: the oh La La sandwich was a favorite for years .. now it's dry each time and not as flavorful as it once was.
