We had a small group go out with Stormie and Harley. They were polite and helpful and we enjoyed the snorkeling very much.

Really disappointing trip. I've never been on a commercial dive trip that there was not a staff member in the water with the guests (and I've been on many over 20 years of certification). There was one dive master- she was nice but never got in the water. There was another guy who was apparently training to be a dive master and he didn't do anything the whole trip but talk with the captain. The captain was extremely rude from the get go- didn't interact with the guests at all and was very rude to the dive master. This is the part that really gets me- the staff (2 of them) were smoking cigarettes on the boat!!! I really couldn't believe it. Right in the middle too, not even at the back so that we weren't all downwind from it. There were no snacks or drinks (there was a cooler of water) which I did know before hand but I have never been on one that didn't at last offer juice/sodas and chips/granola bar type stuff. There was a couple on board that had just been certified, they didn't get to do their first dive because they had some type of difficulty (but there was no staff to assist them). So they had an even worse time of it than we did. This did not feel like a safe and enjoyable trip. read more

This place is awesome! After asking around, we booked One Day Discover SCUBA course (no cert required) with Lost Reef Adventure. Charlie was our PADI certified instructor. The package includes all needed equipments. It breaks into 2 sessions: Morning: about 2.5 hours introduction & practice at beach to get used to equipment & breath underwater. It was very informative & helpful. Afternoon: 2 of one hour dives at two different dive spots. Charlie was very patient and attentive. He made sure we were comfortable with our equipments, checked with us frequently during the dive, pointed out bunch of fun stuffs that we would otherwise missed. It was great fun! We saw a sand shark swimming by (it was too fast to catch up with), a sea turtle pooping (not so pretty of image ), some spiny lobsters (looked very delicious ) and bunch of beautiful fishes! Had a great time diving with this company! I have gone with another comapany once before but l had a much better experience with Lost Reef and I will definitely be using them next time! I did the two reef dives in the morning and it was just what I wanted! Saw SO many beautiful fish and corrals and some barracuda. Can't wait to go back and dive the Vandenberg with these guys on my next trip. The customer service was outstanding and they were very helpful with supplying my gear for me and helping my get one and off the boat. They also had spare parts handy to fix my buddies respirator. The boat was well equipped and clean with plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated which was appreciative. Time was managed very well and we left and returned on the times planned. The captain and the crew were all very experienced and it certainly helped in making sure everyone on the boat had the best and safest dives they could! read more

We signed up for snorkeling and the majority of the 15 people on our trip got sick within the first 20 minutes. After asking the captain how much longer we'd have to endure this nightmare, he told us, with an attitude, that we weren't even close to being done as we'd have to accommodate the three experienced scuba divers who wanted to continue and that we wouldn't die from being sea sick. When we signed up, we were under the impression that it would be a snorkeling only trip, not a mixed scuba/snorkel trip, where the scuba divers are regarded with higher priority than the snorkelers. Finally, after much complaining, they called the main office and asked if we could turn back around. Terrible customer service. They gave us barely any instruction. If you want to snorkel, don't go with Lost Reef because you'll feel exactly that, lost in the reef. read more

First time using Lost Reef Adventures. They were the best price for the dives I wanted to go on. Cayman, Joes Tug and Vandenberg. I also did two reef dives as well. The Boat Captn, Jay and the DM, JP were excellent. Ice cold water is available on the dives as well as any gear which you may have forgotten or needed. My big delta and the reason my review is only 3 stars, is the customer service in the shop. Every time I went in, I felt as if I was a bother to those at the counter. Never did I receive a "Hello, how can I help you?" I went in the shop a few times and from different people I received the same treatment. LOST REEF, I just dropped some serious coin, how bout a "thank you and have a nice day" A smile and some interest in helping a customer out goes a long ways. Don't make the customer feel like they're a bother. It was almost worth considering going else where. read more

Definitely the company to go to if you don't want to feel like a tourist. Plus, you can't beat that price considering you get two whole hours on the reef. Me and my girlfriend did an afternoon snorkel and it was worth every penny. The trips do take up a large part of your day but honestly, if you're in Key West, you want to be on the water. And if you're looking to snorkel/ dive, the reef is where you want to be. We did a snorkel the day before with one of the bigger companies and it felt very touristy. Lost Reef Adventures felt very authentic and it was very intimate, the crew and the passengers all become pretty close after a few hours on the water. I would recommend this company and I look forward to returning to the Keys so I can go snorkel with these guys again. read more

We had a great time with Lost Reef adventures! We found them on yelp and they had pretty good reviews and we can see why! They were able to fit us in both mornings without a fuss. I feel like their prices are reasonable, everything in the area is fairly expensive. They were very kind, friendly and accommodating! We have Mike and Mike and I forgot the captains name, all great!! I snorkeled at two separate sites and they were definitely well educated about the area. They have water on board but please bring your own snacks, you'll definitely need them as you'll get hungrier than you think when you're out on the boat. Also if you get seasick be sure to take something 30 minutes prior to getting on the boat! They're located in a very nice area and when you come back there's tons of places to eat and get happy hour. They are extremely nice and we would definitely go back again :) they were also very good about safety! read more

I rented a wet suit to bring with me to the Dry Tortugas for two days December 3-5th in case the water was to cold. Entering the store the cashier was friendly talking to about Tortugas as I asked if she recommended taking a wet suit (which she STRONGLY encouraged). When it came to actually get the suit however she was entirely indifferent to helping more than needed. The rental cost $15 a day for 2 days, fine. Upon arriving in the Tortugas it was abundantly clear the water temperature was just fine and did not need a wet suit. Of the 200+ campers and day trippers I encourntered not 1 had a wet suit. I spent countless hours over my 2 days snorkeling with no need for the suit. I am fine having the peace of mind but hoped I could trust the recommendation of the shop (though they have a vested interest in up selling obviously) However upon docking back in Key West and going to the store to return the suit that never left my bag the whole weekend, the same employee was exceptionally rude. Immediately turning defensive stating "That sucks for you, but you are still paying for the suit" after I simply mentioned in passing I never even used it. The rest of the encounter was very off putting. I was not asking for a refund but was simply sharing my experience with the hope she will better advise future customers and was very heartbroken by her snarky remarks and rude behavior (especially immediately after a tranquil weekend in paradise) Simpy hope for better advise, and more importantly more polite staff member read more

100% recommended. I booked with them months in advance and called them a handful of times to adjust my plans. Every time I called they were so friendly and helpful. When I arrived in town I had the next three days booked for a mix of dives and family snorkeling with grandparents and kids. My first two days got canceled because of weather and they were super friendly and communacative throughout that process. Eventually I got to do a reef dive with Dave and he showed me some really cool spots taking us through cave like reefs with opening but felt surreal. Dave practically called a lobster into his hand for some show and tell and was great. I also took my family for a snorkeling trip and had an amazing time with the kids despite some rough waters and sea sick members. The team was so friendly and encouraging. Mike was another guide that took me on a wreck dive and I had the best dive of my entire life on my birthday. He showed me tricks that made the dive so much more comfortable and I got to fully enjoy the experience of diving the wreck. Mike was so encouraging and fun to hangout with and gave me the best birthday I could ask for. Totally suggest asking for details when booking a snorkeling trip. I've done snorkeling trips before and even been to one in Key West, but this one we refer to as "extreme snorkeling". So my husband and I saw the place when we were walking by and we booked our trip without inquiring much. Don't know why the "4 hour trip" comment didn't prompt any concerns, but here we are. The boat was going from a different dock, as we were informed the morning of the trip. Luckily, they had transportation for people who chose to meet at the original location, just arrive 15 min earlier. We did. Checking in took a minute and then we sat there waiting for 35 min. "A large party was running late", but then never showed up. Understandable. It's a business, so more people = more $$. So here's where the trip went "extreme". The boat doubles as a diving boat, so when some people went snorkeling, others (a couple) went diving. The first reef was pretty good and shallow for snorkelers. We were directed to be in the water for an hour. We did about 45 min and came back on board. During the time of waiting on the divers (including our van driver and her mom), I was able to jump in the water and swim around. Anchored boat was pretty rocky, so I started feeling a bit nauseated. And I could've been happy to be done, but we were taken to another reef to snorkel/dive for another hour. If you've never been snorkeling, an hour in the ocean is plenty. I would've loved to head back, but standard diving is 2 tank dives, so no wonder. The second site wasn't as nice. Deeper. Plus, we were already tired and a bit motion sick. After about 40 minutes we came back to the boat. I was already properly sick (along with few others). I chose to stay in the water by the boat (it helps some, trust me). My husband stayed by my side to make sure I was okay. Finally we all got on board and headed back to land. I felt totally beat up and would've loved to have "I survived extreme snorkeling" tee (I'm a tourist, so don't judge!). Again, if you LOVE snorkeling (or going diving) for hours, this is for you. I prefer more laid back adventures with an hour snorkeling and then just enjoying the views on the water and a bottle of beer on the way back. Ask questions, make sure you know what you are signing up for. read more

Overall, I would rate this place pretty good. But, there are some caveats. This is NOT a boat for beginning divers. It's a small boat.......max 12 divers...and the dive master does not help you with your gear. This is more for experienced divers - they bring you out, tell you a little about the site and the pool is open. There's a small crowd on the boat so it's easy to get off and on the boat. You're limited to 60 min so air is typically not an issue. There is no dive master that goes down with you. Now, the owner, Nick, (Aug'08 when this was written) is a jackass. The guy is rude as hell and might give you a bad impression of the place. But, I found the dive master & captain of the boat to be pleasant. There's no food at all provided so bring some along.....and they had some water in an old cooler so I also suggest that you bring some bottled water that you can store in their ice chest. I gather this is fairly standard for Key West & Key Largo. In summary, this is NOT a glamorous, family dive boat. But, it is good if you're an experienced diver that just wants to be let free to do your thing. Request: If you're reading this, please write some reviews on your dive, hotel, food and other experiences. I found it difficult to get reviews on dive shops and related so please help out our community. read more

we chartered a boat from these very professional folks for fishing and snorkeling. Their boat is family friendly, with a below-deck changing room and bathroom. They contracted with Captain Neil Renouf of 24/7 fishing charters to run our excursion which was a smashing success! We caught Tuna, Grouper, Red Snapper, Barracuda, and got snorkeling on the reef done as well. They also suited us up in suits and masks extremely professionally and reminded us to take dramamine and such ahead of the trip. We can't say enough about them and recommend them to anyone looking for tricky child-friendly boating and accommodations. read more

I've been diving for fifteen years and decided to just go snorkeling with the lady. Now, I can see how snorkelers seem like whiny amateur tourists that get in the way on a dive boat. Well...the folks at lost reef will definitely make you feel that way. The guy that took our reservations was a total a-hole. He kept looking around like he wanted somebody to ask him for help with something more important than booking a couple of snorkelers. I couldn't tell when he was talking to us, or if he was even writing down our reservation. I'm guessing he has brain damage from one too many cases of the bends. So, in the end, they overbooked the boat. My girlfriend and I checked in very early at 12:30...they said they were running behind and to come back in 15-30 minutes. When I came back at 12:50 they said they were now overbooked. Acting like they didn't remember that I had been in 20 minutes ago, they sent us off to captains corner. I guess it worked out. The staff at captains corner was friendly and the rate for snorkeling was $20 cheaper. read more

Terrible. The staff treat divers like children. They were unfamiliar with modern computers and mistakenly decided that people in our group had "done a deco" (whatever that means) because one person's Suunto was set to have a 3 minute safety stop. They therefore decided that the entire buddy team was barred from diving again. This was after a 30 minute dive at an average depth of 80' -- and even after they inspected everyone's computer to see the profile. (What kind of operation insists on inspecting everyone's computer after evert dive to make sure they follow the "rules"???) Some people seem to mistake their "carrying gear for people" as a favor. It isn't. What they're actually doing, if you look closely, is inspecting it for anything they don't recognize or don't understand. Our group felt like we were in kindegarden! These guys basically ruined an entire day trip for our group, and we ended up canceling another booking with them. read more

Great dive trip to Joes Tug, and Marker 32. I enjoyed the Marker 32 dive with tons of life and the reefs and sprawling ledges were very cool - an underwater playground for sure. I had a great experience diving with lost reef. There were four people in our group. We were all super beginners, for me it was my first dive after open water certification. We did Cayman Salvage + 1 reef. Our guide was Jordan, and we felt so lucky to be diving with him. At first, I was a bit nervous about diving to over 80 feet deep since we were such beginners, but Jordan was extremely thorough, patient, and took great care of us throughout the dive. We went for the afternoon reef dive recently, I did the dive and my friend snorkeled. The reefs are shallow and abundant with marine life. This is a perfect trip for new divers and snorkeling. The staff are courteous and accommodating, in our case the visibility was not great but the captain and boat staff made the best of it and got us into the best and calmest reef possible. And the entire crew was absolutely focused on safety first and secondly keeping the guests comfortable and happy. read more

This outfit was ok, the shop staff is really nice and they took care of all of our needs for the two dives we had with them. We also rented scuba gear from them for private charter dive. The equipment was new and well cared for by the staff. As for the boat team, I was far from impressed, maybe I'm spoiled, many other scuba outfits setup all your gear up for you. The boat also has a poor ventilation system, my wife and I smelled the diesel fumes all the way out to the dive sites and back to the marina. However, The two afternoon dives were exceptional. We were able to see a lemon shark, 5ft long grouper, very large puffer, stingrays and tons of other amazing fish. read more

Lost Reef Adventures - Ride back from afternoon dives! Amazing! - Scuba Diving Near Me - Key West, Florida

I booked a dive trip with Lost Reef Adventures this past Labor Day weekend, 3 days before the scheduled dive trip. The day before, I called them to add another diver, at which point I was told by the manager that the Vandenberg trip would probably be canceled because "there weren't enough divers" (to make it profitable). They weren't EVEN GOING TO TELL ME about the cancellation until 6 pm that night. If I hadn't called that afternoon I would not have had the time to call other Dive Operators. Ultimately I scheduled the Vandenberg trip with South Point Divers in Key West, and had a great trip with them despite the poor visibility that day on the wreck. Even though Lost Reef Adventures was going to cancel the dive, they did not completely refund my deposit, they kept the better part of $200 because "that's their policy". In other words, they reserve the right to cancel a dive trip at the last minute just because it won't be profitable, but if a diver cancels within 24 hours they lose their deposit, even if the diver is canceling because they were told the trip would probably be canceled! Abhorrent business practices should not be tolerated, and I strongly recommend that prospective divers take their business elsewhere. read more

I will only dive Lost Reef Adventures next time I'm in Key West. We did a double-dip on the Hoyt Vandenberg and these guys and gals are great! I've dived around the Caribbean and these people rival anyone of great customer service for divers. They are friendly, carry your gear to the boat, make sure you have everything you need, they give a very thorough dive briefing prior to the dive on the Vandenberg, have super safe attitude, always have fun, and seem to want to make sure every diver has a great time. They hang a down line and safety bottle on every dive. Many boat never think about this but they do it for every Vandenberg dive. Our dive guide Eric was excellent. He was extremely thorough on making sure we knew the dive plan and exactly how things would go getting down, around, and back on the boat. He gave us two great tours of the wreck, in and out of nice swim-throughs, around the cool stuff, and back near the mooring line with time to swim around. Now don't think we are inexperienced cruise ship divers who love to have someone lead us by the hand. We've dove all over and appreciate an operation that give great service without being too controlling. I can't say enough about how much I like these guys after one set of dives. I've done Bonaire, Playa & Cozumel, Mexico, Jamaica, Bahamas, Key Largo, and plenty of others. LRA will compare to any on service and attitude. Thank guys!!! We'll be back soon! read more

My review is about the resort course offered at Lost Reef. I was a super beginner, never even gone snorkeling before, but I was determined to do this. I wanted to scuba dive so I decided to do the resort course where you are given basic scuba instruction in a swimming pool and then you are taken on a dive in open water later. Cool, right? Patrick was the dive instructor. He was SO PATIENT. I was having a rough time of it in the pool. My mask was not fitting right and kept being flooded with water. Being a beginner, I had no idea how to handle it. We eventually solved the mask problem and I was able to scuba dive in the pool as if I'd been doing it for years. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy was blowing past at the same time so the tides were high and rough and very dangerous for a beginner (boooo, hissss), so we were unable to go on the open water dive. This was the case up through the end of my vacation so I cannot review the dive portion of the resort course. I can report, however, that the whole staff was very helpful and friendly on every level in every way and that I was not charged for the pool portion of the resort course. I would definitely go back to them on my next Key West vacation. read more
