I debated whether to give this 2 or 3 stars and decided to do 2 as one of the mistakes could have been tragic for someone with a shell fish allergy ... I am vegan and ordered vegetable spring roll, vegetable lo mein, and tofu general tsao. When I bit in to the vegetable roll, it was full of shrimp. thankfully, I'm not allergic and spit it out. the lo mein had next to no vegetables (3 small pieces of broccoli), and the tofu was swimming in sickly sweet sauce. The dishes were all well seasoned and seemed relatively fresh. Overall, I won't be ordering from them again but maybe if you go in you can be more specific, send stuff back etc and have a better experience. read more

Update from previous review. We ordered two orders of chicken wings and fries and two orders of shrimp rolls. I was told a total that was more than the prices on the menu. I asked why the difference and was told the prices increased. I've come here a few times any every time the price is different than the menus. Why not update the menu or the website. The food was o and k only and from the pictures you see one order was different in portion from the other. All in all not worth the hike in price, plus I'm more annoyed that the price seem to be different every time I go there. Prior to Covid this was a really good place but now it's just ordinary. The staff is also not as nice as they used to be.

I called the restaurant beforehand to speak to them about my food allergies. I spoke to a woman and she pretended to listen to my concerns. When we got our order home and opened it, everything that i had advised her i couldn't eat was included in the food! When i called and notified her of their mistake, she denied I ever said anything about my allergies and never apologized or offered any credits. I will not be returning there! I started going to this restaurant based off Yelp reviews. I've been very picky since the pandemic. I've ordered several times and it's been okay. Not the best ever, but decent. I've tried a variety of dishes. Yesterday I ordered well done chicken wings and chicken & broccoli. I always ask for well done wings. These were perfectly crispy on the outside, but when I pulled the skin back at least two of them were black to the bone and the the meat wasn't edible. I used a napkin and pulled it away from the gristle. The gristle was also black and old. It was so dry it crumbled. I wish I'd taken a picture, but I was so disgusted while I was eating I just wanted to throw it away before I lost my appetite. I am so grossed out just thinking about it!!! I will never go back here again!! If I could give negative stars I would! Whoever fried these had to see that they were very old wings. I paid $14. Why risk giving a customer food poisoning?? 3.75 stars:: Lotus is one of the cleanest Chinese food places in North Jerz. That is so relieving to say lol. Their food is always fresh and delicious. I don't think they use MSG and their food doesn't weigh me down or give me a headache (which is frequent with fast foods in general) They make a great boneless spare ribs coated in a honey mixture that is so friggin' good! The egg, pork and spring rolls are not greasy. Fried rice is closer to hibachi style then typical Americanized chinese. They are almost always busy and the zone of which they are willing to deliver is very limited. I do not care for their chicken wings, much too much pepper for my tastes. Their broccoli is crunchy and fresh which assures me, it is quality. They give a good amount of shrimp in their shrimp and broccoli, white rice has good consistency. Have taken out from here today and MANY times. They have installed glass windows for this "new normal" and only 1 person can pick-up food at a time. In my humble opinion the best family owned Chinese food in the area. It's not needlessly greasy, except for greseball mainstays like Lo Mein. Ingredients are always fresh. After at least 20 times of eating here I have NEVER had an issue with food quality. I recommend the General Tso's with light sauce, it makes for a more crispy, less sweet saucey saturated meal. The chicken curry is also a good choice, they leave the veggies just at that point where they still have a little crunch...and they retain some of their natural flavor! The yellow curry is a delicious blend of salty, spice, heat and sweet. It's not a thick curry but still delivers where it counts. They deliver in the area as well. I am VERY picky about my Chinese food. Have been eating here since they opened and when they had the sit down portion next door. Have watched the owners children grow up and even remembered when they were expecting their youngest son. It has been over 20 years and the quality of their food remains the same. I drive across town to pick up my food and only eat Chinese (except for an occasional fried rice) from here. The Best Ever!!! You won't be disappointed. read more

Anyone who lives in or near Montclair will join me in a moment of silence in remembering Sesame, the best Chinese restaurant in the state of New Jersey, which closed last year when the owners very selfishly moved back to China to retire and be with their families. Yeah, whatever. Since then, I've been on a quest -- a crusade, you might call it -- to find a Chinese place to fill the void. I've accepted that no place will be Sesame, but would love to find good Chinese food. Unfortunately, Lotus isn't it. First of all, it's a take out and delivery place -- that's important, because I thought it was a restaurant (and according to another reviewer here, it used to be). I am guessing that would help with the food quality as with any place you order from vs. dining in. We had the barbeque beef stick because it was recommended here, and it was made with a funky spice -- fennel, perhaps? -- that seemed unfamiliar and out of place on it. The cold noodles with sesame sauce were more tahini-tasting than peanutty, but they were light -- so if that's what you look for in these types of noodles, you will like them. The boneless ribs were the best out of all our party ordered, and although this might sound like a dumb thing to rate, the rice was perfect. We also had sesame chicken, which was more like a sweet and sour chicken than a typical sesame. So again, if you like sweet and sour, you'll like this; it was just too sweet for us. Finally, an order of kung bo chicken was overall fine, although we couldn't get past the potatoes in the dish, which none of us in our dining party had encountered in this dish before. So not awful, not the best. Just, as the description reads, "meh." Off to jump on my trusty steed and ride off into the sunset to find another place to try... Wish me well! read more

My default Chinese take-out restaurant in West Orange has always been Bill and Harry's. While I really do like their food, their proximity to my house and a convenient public parking lot located right next door didn't hurt either, but recently due to Covid-19 they've modified their business hours somewhat, so I've been forced to locate another nearby Chinese take-out restaurant for the times when I want a Chinese food fix and Bill and Harry's isn't open. A quick look on Yelp lead me to Lotus Oriental Cuisine, which is a mere 5 minutes further down the road. Right off the bat, as soon as I saw the location, I started shaking my head. Parking was going to be a challenge, and that's saying it nicely. There is a large, tempting, meter-free parking lot right next door, but it's a private lot for an apartment building, and there are more threatening warning signs posted than at Area 51. That leaves the street. All I can say is "good luck". With the lack of parking in the area, the cars parked on the street seem like permanent fixtures, and don't seem to move. After some time I finally did manage to park, although I suspect I was probably not in a legitimate spot. Upon entering I was quite impressed by their efforts to separate the food, kitchen and workers from any contamination. The entry area is practically hermetically sealed. You communicate via 2-way intercom, there's a pass-thru window for payment and the food, and they don't even touch your credit card. At this point, while they lost a point for the parking hassle, they gained one for their superior protective measures. They seemed very friendly and my order came out quickly. I ordered Beef Lo Mein. I know that's not a very foodie choice, but the stomach wants what the stomach wants. I was pleasantly surprised by all the ingredients. Beef Lo Mein usually is just beef, noodles and onions. Their Beef Lo Mein also had cabbage, mushrooms and carrots. The portion size was very generous and the price was very reasonable. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line they forgot to add any flavor, and while I was distracted with the bounty of vegetables I didn't notice there was barely any beef in it until I started eating. The noodles were also overcooked and seemed to have congealed into a giant Lo Mein blob. In fact the whole dish seemed to be overcooked. I guess that's why it was so lacking in flavor. To be fair, their other food may be great, and maybe their Beef Lo Mein is usually great. So I do plan to try them again, and I'll order more of a variety. Hopefully things will improve, but for now Lotus Oriental Cuisine gets 3 stars. read more

I usually go to Wing Fat Chinese which is around the corner from Lotus. Overall I think WF has the better food. Lotus is a cleaner more efficiently run take out with a little bit more expensive and extensive menu.. They have (cheese steak egg rolls) which I don't believe are on the menu and are really good.. everything else is good not great. I recently got wonton soup which I asked them to make spicey. It was very bland and only had broth and wontons.. no pieces of pork or anything else you would find in wonton soup.. you can see in my pic.. So I wouldnt recomend them first for Chinese food in the area but they are definitely quality. Just a little more expensive then they should be.. read more

I think that's what really sets theirs apart, it's the same great flavors just tastes a lot healthier than traditional Chinese food restaurants. Honestly the best Chinese take out place in the area. Prior to the pandemic, they had some dishes that you can only get in New York Chinatown. Now it looks like they pared down the menu and only do the common Americanized Chinese food items. But they do it well. If you were to get a shrimp lo mein from TS Ma or Hunan Taste in Montclair, and compare it to the shrimp lo mein at Lotus Oriental, it'll pretty much be the same, only LO will be a lot cheaper. read more

Every single time I've ordered (and I order from the town they are based out of), they take an hour or longer. And when you are hungry, this becomes a major problem.
