Let me get one thing straight. Shan Shan Noodles doesn't care about this review. They don't care if you come. Why? Because they are busy AF. They are buzzing. We went for the first time Sunday at like 3pm? Full. Take out orders flying out the door. It's a cute place. Standard strip mall aesthetic. But they do have a window where you can see them hand pulling the noodles. That's right, hand pulling the noodles which is the main attraction. The food is from the North Western part of China near Pakistan so there are some Indian influences like their Cumin lamb and pulled noodles one of their most popular dishes. But I'm getting ahead of myself. With my vegetarian wife who as usual ruins everything by insisting we order vegetarian appetizers. Scallion pancakes were delicious. No pictures because we ate them immediately. Pan fried dumpling. 9 of them. That's a big portion. And it was like 9-10 bucks? They make their own dumpling wrappers, their own dipping sauces. Dumplings were very good. You could really taste the vegetables. Focused on the quality of the ingredients. My wife had the hand pulled noodles in hot oil. Marked spicy it was American spicy. Did not blow your head off. O enjoyed them. They give you a pair of scissors. Because it's one long noodle. Do not use them on your birthday. More on that later. I had the aforementioned cumin lamb and pulled noodles. I liked it but it was overwhelmingly cumin flavored which obviously is the point of cumin lamb. I'm not saying over seasoned I'm just saying it announced itself as this is cumin lamb. Period. We also had bubble tea! How fun is that? My wife had taro which they made with non dairy milk for her. I had pomegranate with exploding bubbles. Never had those before. Also super fun. They did not explode in an American way or even a Chinese way as both countries let's face it are pretty well known for making things explode. No in a pleasant way. Waitress was delightful we had obviously a long conversation about the food and the restaurant. The scissors are for Americans who share their food. In China you would eat the noodles slurp them without cutting them because eating long noodles especially on your birthday is supposed to promote a long life. We did not learn this until after cutting my wife's noodles. It was her birthday. I will miss her but also look forward to meat based appetizers. One door closes and all that. They also own the bakery a few doors down. Very light chiffon style cakes. Not too sweet. Chocolate Oreo cake. I asked if that was very traditional. Oh how we laughed at my hilarious joke. read more

Chinese lamb burger sounded really crunchy but after bitting into it, it's not as crunchy as I was expecting. The bread soaked up the flavor and sauce which did make the bread soggy. We ordered pick up on a Saturday night, and it took them around 35 minutes to have it ready, which is fairly normal, considering the restaurant was packed to the brim. The restaurant itself is fairly small, with a long table in the middle if you have a large party, but beware that it takes time to get a table there. The food was good, but nothing magnificent nor particularly special. We got some pork dumplings, handspun noodles, scallion pancake, and fried noodles. The scallion pancake was okay, not very good but it could be because it was takeout, which made it a bit chewy as it was a bit cold. The dumplings were okay, not the best I've had and definitely pretty average. The noodles were also okay. The cumin lamb was definitely different, but not outstanding. I did enjoy the spicy ground pork noodles, but they were very oily which came to take a toll on me as I finished eating. We came here at the recommendation of a shop keeper in Boonton. We got their steamed dumplings, beef pancakes and braised beef noodle soup. Of the lot, the dumplings were the best. The wrappers were lovely and chewy and filling was flavorful. The beef pancakes were good enough though I could have done with less sauce (or just put the sauce on the side). The broth in the braised beef noodle soup was a bit on the bland side, it seemed to be over reliant on the spiciness for flavor. The noodles were thick and chewy and beef was very tender. Coming in for some hot Chinese food while it's bitter cold outside certainly hits just the right spot and starting with the steamed beef dumplings was a great choice. The dumplings were flavorful, hot, and perfectly steamed. They were definitely the highlight of our meal. Next came the beef pancake which was crunchy, chewy, had excellent flavor, but slightly heavy on the sauce. Lastly, was the braised beef noodle soup. The broth's flavor was on the mild side, whilst relying on the spice's heat to shine as the primary flavor. The beef was also mild, but especially tender. I've heard a lot of great things about this place, so when I happened to be in the area, I made sure I finally checked it out and I'm so glad that I did. I went on a late Saturday afternoon, so the wait wasn't too long. I bet it was probably busier during the actual lunch time. My friends and I got the following: #16 - spicy ground pork over hand-pulled noodles #44 - scallion pancake Noodle #2 - beef with hand pulled noodle soup They were all very good, but we really liked the spicy ground pork dish. We actually wanted to try the wide noodles, so we actually ordered just some of them plain and mixed them with the leftover spicy pork sauce. It actually tasted better with the wide noodles. I usually always add hot oil to my food whenever I get a chance, but the spicy ground pork had a perfect kick to it, so didn't need the hot oil at all. However, the one dish I was surprised and really liked was the complimentary side dish of a cucumber salad, made with very simple seasonings according to our server. It was soooooo good and went so well with all the dishes and added freshness to the rich food we were eating. My friend even ordered some to take home, which was around $6/$7 (can't remember exact price). If you do go, don't skip the cucumbers. Not a fancy or big place, but the turn over is pretty quick because the service is fast, so food comes out very quick. If you're in the area and you want good food, this is a place you must stop by. Went to Shan Shan Noodles for dinner on a Sunday. It's the only place in the area I'm aware of that makes hand pulled noodles. You can see the noodle maker behind a glass window by the kitchen. The restaurant has the ambiance and size of a Chinese takeout joint, but people actually dine in at the tables that they have. They seemed to be pretty busy for takeout as well. The restaurant was packed, we had to wait for a table. We were given menus and our orders were taken. We ordered the fried pork buns, fried hand pulled noodles, cumin lamb noodles, braised beef noodle soup, and the beef pancake. The noodles were all great. Fresh with a bouncy texture. My favorite was the cumin lamb noodles, especially after I had added the chili crisp on the table. The prices were fair, and the food is as authentic as any place in Chinatown. This local place brings back memories. I would say their vegetable hand pulled noodles are second to none and so are their tofu dishes. This place went viral on tiktok for awhile and for good reason. The wide noodles were nice and long with a great texture while the lamb was perfectly cooked with some Szechuan pepper spice. Then my kids and hubs enjoyed their Seafood with Sauteed Noodles which arrived with scallops and shrimp galore. (It reheated well the next day.) Then we all couldn't stop eating their Steamed Pork Dumplings and Dumplings in Vinegar Soup with Seaweed. We finished them all! With food this good, I'm definitely a fan of Shan Shan!
