Spent a wonderful hour back in time at the Lotz House and didn't even need a flex capacitor. Seth was our guide back to 1864. He made it come alive recounting the horrors of the fiercest battle of the civil war. Unlike other house tours, at this one you can actually go behind the ropes onto the aged wood floors and feel as if "you are there". What a neat experience. We literally stumbled in on the tour (like we opened the door and a tour already had started right in that spot) and they immediately invited us to join. I believe our guide, an older gentleman, was Thomas. He was great!! He told stories with such enthusiasm and he really knows his stuff. You can tell he's very passionate about history and the story of the Lotz family, and that shows through his stories and commentary. Do yourself a favor and take this tour. There are some interesting pieces of history left intact and it's truly mind blowing. read more

Great little museum! The tour tells you about the history of the home and its builder/ owner, and the family. Tons of original wood works from over 150 years ago. We totally recommend this tour if you are interested in the civil war and how it effected a family that was caught up in it. Our tour guide, Allison, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic! Unlike other tours you were actually allowed to enter the rooms rather than viewing from the doorway. Highly recommended. Tour lasted over an hour and with a Groupon only cost $6 each. read more

If you have any serious interest in history, skip this one or perhaps save it until you don't have anything left in Franklin to do. The staff is nice (unless you ask what they consider to be dumb questions and then they'll tear you apart after you leave while the next tour waits within earshot in the hall (though, in their defense, the questions they were mocking were pretty bad)) and my guide did the very best she possibly could with a sincerely limited amount of info to deliver. The tour lasts about an hour and could generously be done in less than 20 minutes including the Q&A and a breeze through the gift shop. There's about ten minutes worth of family and battle-related history including a viewing of some of the house's battle scars and, if I'm honest, the story just isn't interesting enough to have built an entire hour-long tour around. As such, the remaining 40-ish minutes is time I would've gladly gotten back. The house is loaded with stunning antiques, less than a handful of which have anything to do with the house or family. So, if you like old houses for the sake of old houses, like perusing antiques because you like antiques, like to hear people talk about stuff, or if you've done basically all the other things in a two-hour radius, check this one out. I do think there's potential here (and it's obvious that they're striving to provide a tour worthy of the $12 admission) but whomever runs this property just hasn't quite tapped it yet. Perhaps I'll try it again in a couple of years. But for now, this one's a pass... read more

Neither my wife nor I are Civil War buffs, but we saw the deal on Living Social and decided to give it a shot. So happy we did - we loved our tour. Jean, our guide, was very informative and able to answer all of our questions. Her narrative was full of interesting facts about the people who lived in the Lotz House, not just the battle itself, which made it even more interesting. The antiques were amazing, and the markings of the war (cannon imprints, blood stains, bullet holes) were cool. We'll definitely bring family back here when they come to visit. Try it - it's only $10! We spent a little over an hour there. Lots of parking in the back if the front drive is full. Enjoy! read more

We toured the house as part of the Carter House and Carnton Plantation combination tour. The cost of the tour is $30 per person and allows you admission into all three. There is no time table as to when you have to do the tour. The tickets never expire. We did the Lotz House second after the Carter House. Extremely interesting to learn the history of this home and it's owner. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and made sure to see if the group had any questions before moving to the next room. The history of the house post the War is also very interesting and I am happy it was "saved" so that we can now tour. The entire tour takes less than a hour. There are stairs for people to get to the second floor. The gift shop is in one of the main rooms on the first floor where the tour begins. It has some great books available for purchase. No photos allowed within in the home. The guide does ask you to post a review for the home at the end of the tour. I would have done it any way. This is worth the time and money. read more

If you are looking for a tour where you feel like you are actually living the time you MUST do this tour with Thomas Cartwright. He took the time to explain everything with so much passion and knowledge you felt as though you knew exactly how the family was felling and what they went through during those five hours and the days after the bloody battle. This tour was fascinating and informative! Robert, our tour guide, gave us the "keys to a time machine" and seamlessly sent us back to the 1860s, laying out every detail and giving the inside scoop on the history of the house and the family. The story of this home is rich...from the artisan work of Mr. Lotz to the hob nail boot marks and blood stains on the floors. To the repairs from cannon ball holes and artwork of Matilda. Great historical example....I suggest this experience to anyone, even if you aren't a Civil War buff. read more

We visited the Lotz House last weekend. The tour was fantastic. J.T. gave our tour, and he was great. He pointed out blood stains that remain on the floors, the holes made by the cannon balls, and really captured the emotions of the battle and its aftermath. We only had time for the one house; hopefully next time we can tour Carnton and Carter as well. J.T. was also very helpful in recommending a rare book store as well as other civil war sites to visit. I had a few hours to kill waiting for my flight out of Nashville, so I drove 30 min to this House Museum. Well worth it, being a civil war buff, I was very happy with the cost and experience of the staff. My tour guide was very passionate and knowledgeable with the subject matter, also being a reenactor he answered all my questions in detail. This house also gave him much to work with, I was completely impressed with what happened there. Very glad I spent my time in this little town, had lunch next door. read more
