Charcuterie board and wine flights.

A great spot to hang out with some friends, as well as grab some wine. It's a great way to spend a Saturday evening.

The left counter is all mixers and bitters. The right is all fortified wines.

Have you ever walked into a place and felt like it's a place you would make for yourself? That's the way I felt walking into LouElla's After a long day at work and some evening errands, Jack and I were making our way home, when I decided to check out wine stores that were still open on my route. Louella's came up as one of the few still open after 9 PM. I checked the website, and found that they have not, one, not two, but an entire page of fortified wines and Vermouth! As a cocktail nerd, this place checked boxes I didn't even realize I had! There's half a rack of bitters and other premixes. The atmosphere on this blissfully warm night in September was dimly lit, quietly elegant ambiance music (Think Brian Eno, Volcano Choir, or Bon Iver) From outside, with two large TVs above a bar, you may think it's a typical sports bar. But no one here is drinking beer, they have pizza from down at Hutchin's Garage and various wines out on the tables out front. With real glasses. Like adults. Here in the south in a semi-pandemic semi-lock-down. After picking out three different sweet vermouth to try, I bought a glass of Dolcetto and a pre-boxed cheese/meat tray. Although the cheese was from the cooler, as it set out, it was evidently fairly fresh, because it warmed up testily. Sadly, they close at 10, so I'll have to wrap this up later. Suffice it to say, if you're looking for a place to grab a special bottle to upscale your Negroni, or just can't seem to find Pechaud's bitters anywhere, now you have a place to check out. There is an entire 85% more of the store to explore for me, since I had arrived with a narrow purpose and found it immediately. But you can bet, I'll be back. It's within walking distance of FullSteam, MotorCo, Hutchin's, Cocoa Cinnamon's Old North Durham location. They've only been open for six months, when you don't count COVID time, so give 'em some love, folks! They are the type folks we need to support!

This wine bar was fun. We stopped in to grab a drink, it was a moscato for me and a pinot grigio for my husband. The seating available inside is slim so we stood around since it was too hot to sit outside in the front of the store. If you want to do a wine tasting, there is a small bar area in the back. Now that you've enjoyed your experience it's time to browse the selection to take home. They have a great selection of wine along with a small selection of beer. LouElla is worth checking out if you are in downtown Durham.

A new wine, beer and bottle shop for Durham's warehouse district, Louella sits in a small plaza next to the popular Accordion club! Louella has a nice location with a lot of space inside so things are still filling up here. Up front is the main bar for vino and cervezas while in the back they've got a smaller tasting bar for events. Overall I like the space and it will need some time to fill out the retail shelves and get things rolling. So I plan on keeping an eye on Louella to see how it evolves in the months after it opens.

Bottom line: LouElla Wine Beer and Beverages is starting out to be a great addition to the downtown Durham scene. Nice spacious venue with plenty of beverages both to sell to take home as a bottle shop and at the large front serving bar by the glass. You can tell the folks at LouElla are excited and passionate about their place. I am a fan, I'd say 4.5 stars. The Deets: After Saturday brunch this past weekend, we were wandering from Hutchins Garage to the Accordion Club for a post brunch libation and stopped at the new LouElla Wine Beer and Beverages. A very open and inviting space, modern but not crowding or overwhelming, we sat down at the main front bar (very spacious bar at that) and got a drink. Owner Cam came over to engage in friendly conversation and filled us in on their low-down. Brand new, and ready to serve, they have a main front bar for serving while Cam explained he hoped to host special tasting events and other items at the smaller back corner bar we saw. They already had a great large selection of wine and beverages on display to sell on their floor and looks like they have plenty of room to fill in more. Cam also filled us in on hopes to have a customer "databank" available soon where you can find your past purchases, beverage preference, etc. and can help them help you in your next purchase at their bottle shop. Very cool idea. The menu at the bar was great, a nice various selection of wine and beverages where I even found a hibiscus cider to enjoy (delicious). I had a wonderful beverage break here, and I think they will be a great addition to the downtown Durham scene, I'm going with 4.5 stars.

The wine list is broad and thoughtfully curated, with options that feel approachable whether you're a casual wine drinker or someone looking to try something new. The sommeliers were welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping us find something we loved. The space itself is adorable, with eclectic décor and cozy lighting that makes it easy to settle in and stay awhile. It's a great spot for conversation and a relaxed evening with friends. The only downside is that the space is fairly small, and I would have loved to see one or two more lower seating options for small groups rather than mostly high tops. That said, I could absolutely see us coming back for a pre- or post-theater glass of wine or an easy catch-up night.

The service is awesome--our server was super friendly and gave me a great drink recommendation when I wasn't sure what I wanted. It ended up being perfect. My friend and I shared a glass of the 2023 Cederberg Bukettraube (sweet white wine) and got the charcuterie board for one with the truffle salami. That board was so good--I can't stop thinking about it. The toasted baguette slices with truffle salami and mustard? Unreal. It was the perfect little snack to share. We also had the citrus lavender crème brûlée, which was surprisingly delicious. I don't usually go for crème brûlée, but this one was light, not overly sweet, and just had a really nice flavor. I've also tried their shepherd's pie before and loved it--wish it was still on the menu! The vibe inside is moody and cozy, and they've got a cute outdoor patio too. Overall, such a great spot. A little pricey, but I'll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend checking out Killer Queen.

There's an S-shaped bar along the right side as you walk in with a few smaller tables scattered to the left and ahead, but if you walk around the plantings, there are larger tables in the rear. We had reserved a place for eight, and they fit us in with plenty of room around as a buffer. Few other parties joined us back there, so it was very quiet and great for friends catching up. We tried several wines, but I was a bit shock ed that the list wasn't longer: three reds, three whites, a few rosés and sparkling offerings was all there were. The only Italian red was a blend, which was ok. 60% Sangiovese, it was ok, but I'd have loved a bold Tuscan red like a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo or a full-on Sangiovese. I ordered the wild mushroom flatbread and the pasta carbonara. the flatbread was delicious, and very filling. Half went home for a lunch treat the next day! The pasta was ok, but there weren't the flavors I was expecting. Hardly any meat was in the dish, and it was just a kinda "ok" creamy pasta dish. But the service and the atmosphere was amazing! It's funny - many in this group have met since and we always remark how other places have such a larger wine selection than this one that has "wine" in the name. Maybe they need to change the name if they aren't going to have a wider selection. Still a fun place, just done expect a lot of selection.

And, it truly lived up to the hype. One of the best we've ever had! I also tried two other cocktails made with their house-distilled rum and gin, and both were delicious and perfectly balanced. The seasonal menu is creative and reasonably priced, we were genuinely impressed. The ambiance is charming and cozy despite a bit warm inside (the AC was pretty weak), but quiet and tastefully decorated with velvet couches, exposed walls, vintage touches, and fresh flowers on each table. We had fun flipping through their amazing cocktail book collection on the shelf too. The bartenders were very friendly and offered us focaccia from Ninth Street Bakery to pair with our drinks for free, which was such a thoughtful and tasty addition. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and are so happy to see a micro-distillery thriving in the heart of Durham. Can't wait to return for an official tour and to sample more of their spirits!

That response will get a smile every time. Super dog-friendly, to say the least, both outside and inside. Outside has several tables under a covered area, and inside has a few couches (with tiny tables) and a long bar you can sit at. We've been a few times now, and the service is super friendly and helpful, every time. It's small and intimate inside, but we never have a problem finding a seat! I love that they have snacks you can help yourself to, in airtight jars at the bar (peanut butter filled pretzels, sour worms, etc). Also important to note- the inside is NOT air conditioned. We stopped in on a HOT day, and it's brutal inside, with cloth couches and just one small fan. Love this bar, all of their cocktails (wine available too), and all of the staff! Will be back (a lot)!!
