Wonderful restaurant in the heart of this amazingly beautiful city. Situated along La Grande Allée adjacent to Old Quebec, Louis Hebert is an ideal spot to sample some delicious food in a great setting. During a recent visit to Quebec City and following an amazing guided walking tour of the old city my wife and I met up with relatives of mine on the patio of Louis Hebert and enjoyed a fine experience. Service was excellent. Our server was helpful and informative with the menu selections. I enjoyed a delicious Brochette de filet mignon de boeuf grillée while my lovely wife sampled the Linguine aux deux saumons, both accompanied by a very nice Destnéa Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley. It was an amazing time reconnecting with relatives and new friends in a truly ideal setting. I booked a room here but the place locks up after 10pm. It seemed I was the most nly and one there. Really eerir. If you want to get back into the hotel you have to take a different set of stairs. The manager said there's others but he lied because there was nobody there. Too quiet. The dinner was way overpriced. I was charged $65 for a small stake coffee, a small portion of pannacoota, and a salmon fillet set on a small serving of mashed potatoes and inedible leeks.H big deal. The server was rude and had attitude, he looks like a kid. The manager claims he doesn't speak English well and kept asking me to repeat myself Jeanne spoke to others in English. Many of their customers speak English. He gave me the evil eye because I only left a $5 tip at all. I'm not coming here again. Typo it seemed like I was the only one in the hotel area. Really eerie. We did take out for dinner from Louis Hebert on our first night in Quebec City. We ordered the duck breast and beef cheek. The duck was extremely small portion and not good. I didn't expect perfectly crispy skin on a takeout order, but I still expected better. They didn't score the skin prior to cooking, so the skin was not rendered properly and very soggy. The duck meat itself was cooked to a nice med-rare temperature but the meat was still very chewy and tough. The parsnip puree was too sweet for my taste. Would definitely recommend passing on this entree and getting something else. Now on to the beef cheek. This one was a more decent sized portion and it was delicious. The beef was fall-apart tender and had amazing flavour. The sauce was not over-powering and very well balanced. The mashed potato was creamy and silky smooth. I would highly recommend this dish! Had lunch today and we had the lunch specials. Started with cauliflower soup, very smooth and delightful. Had the salmon tartare and salmon. Both yummy and wonderful. Friday night dinner in Quebec. Delicious. The server was entertaining, friendly and professional. All but one of the 2013 reds on the wine list were in fact 2014 or 2016s. Damn! The owner was a nice enough man, but showed me the caveat on the wine list that the year may change. It did about ten times. I do believe that after I left, the wine list was updated. It would have been a lot easier, if it was before I got there. One by one, the bargains fell to the floor and I was left with a $145 Can 2013 burgundy or a Cote d' Rhone of 2014. I went the less expensive. After aerating it vigorously for 15 minutes, it opened up. Not great, but drinkable. My choice, my fault. I had a 2014 a few weeks ago that was wide open, but it was a higher level wine and I knew the tasting note on it. So, down to the food; the almond and mustard encrusted rack of lamb was sensational! The duck breast was over a demi-glass. Unique to me and a revelation as to sauce and duck combinations. The bread was very good and the salad and country pate were also very good. One cheese plate and one assorted dessert plate. Yes, they had decaf coffee. No regrets, only great results. $260 and worth it. read more

Three words best describe this restaurant: intimate, upscale and delicious. It's not the type of restaurant that you want to take the whole family, you know with grandma and the kids. But rather, it's a good restaurant to take a date. Inside there's lots of character, stone fireplaces, flickering candle lights, tiny tables....you get the idea. The inside sort of surprised me because I didn't have high expectations before walking in. I mean, there was an employee standing outside trying to lure customers with their $29 special dinner. I passed on the special and ended up ordering from the standard menu. And boy, what I received was fabulous. If you want French, you'll get French here. It was what might have been a frigid night in the Valley when I and a small portion of my group were met by a courtier 15 paces from the entrance, as we ran through the menu. The hostess spoke fluently in both French and English, I didn't test her knowledge in any other languages, though I do embrace the idea. I arrived at Louis Hebert on a Saturday evening around 7:15PM with a group of 8; within five minutes of our reservation-less arrival, my group of eight was designated a private room upstairs granting us a more intimate setting (that is not to say that the general dining room is not an intimate setting; I have not experienced the dining room atmosphere, but will still postulate that any sort of private room must provide some sort of enhanced intimacy when compared to mere dining halls of the bourgeoisie. My array of townsmen and I had the pleasure of having David as our garçon for the evening. We were welcomed by his warm sensibilities, haste, and cunning intellect. He seemed to predict our every desire before we could manifest any concern for ourselves. I had the Pinot Noir with Carrot Soup. The carrot soup reminded me of my days in the womb, i.e. just the right temperature, and full of lively ingredients, all of which specially designed to bring life and rapture to the soul. I highly recommend the Carrot Soup. I followed with the Seafood, Shrimp Bouillabaisse. The Bouillabaisse was surprisingly less satisfying than the Carrot Soup, yet delicious nonetheless. Bright with a large portion of trout, this dish has no shortage of flesh. I heard good things about "the rabbit" from a bearded man sitting at the other end of the table. As I myself did not try it, I will refrain from making too brace a claim about its quality. Louis Hebert has an expansive selection of wine, rich flavor, and a capable waitstaff. Kudos. read more

So close to perfection! I would recommend getting the Table d' Hote which allows one to choose and appetizer, entree and dessert for a low price of $59. I chose the Salmon Three Ways for my appetizer - the tartare was the BEST! Ed got the scallops which were so good! For my entree I chose the beef tenderloin - the portion was huge! Ed had the guinea hen and raved about it. We were definitely slowing down and getting full and still had the dessert course! Both of us had the creme brûlée and it also did not disappoint! We were seated and then promptly ignored by our waitress. We sat there for one hour after ordering before the oyster (which weren't cold) appetizer arrived. Finally the salad came, over dressed lettuce with no additional vegetables in it. I had the walleye over lentils, which was served with a "pesto" cream sauce that had a huge pool of oil collecting on the plate. Under seasoned. LH is conveniently situated on Grande Allee just outside the wall (Vieux-Québec). We stumbled across LH on a really SLOWWW night. They had a $29 table d'hote special. Each Table d'Hote came with an appetizer (soup or salad), main entree, dessert and coffee. We tried the Lamb Shank, Halibut, and Seafood Platter for the main course. The main entrees were delicious. The dessert and appetizers were limited - the only dessert with the table d'hote was a pecan sugar pie. The only choice for the appetizer was a potato soup or salad. Very Disappointed! I love Quebec and the Grand Alle especially for the gastronomical delights they provide. This is not one if those places. I saw a review of the same dish I will mention to you now, but they rated it excellent. Suspicious that this review must be personally connected to restaurant. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is the service was decent and the setting was nice until... So we patiently waited 20 minutes for a good seating right along the sidewalk of the Grand Alle. We ordered a nice glass of Pino Grigio and began to drink in our environment. 15 minutes in they setup a whole new row of tables cutting us off from the good seat we waited for. They never offered to move us which would have been nice. Now I love Lobster Bisque; I have my own recipe but love the many variations I have have experienced especially when in Aux En Provence South of France. Unfortunately what was served was nothing more than some fish stock, tiny bits of lobster, very light clear tomatoey broth and a dab of sour cream in the middle. I tried a spoon full and it was too fishy even for a fish soup, so I double checked to make sure nothings was still swimming around. I tried mixing in the sour cream but that did not make it any better. Lots of Salt and Pepper. Nope. Nothing could bring life to this inept concoction. I politely told my waiter that there was obviously a mistake as this was not a Lobster Bisque. He said it was but with great kindness removed it and hopefully was given a Bon Voyage before dumping down the drain. Relaxed we enjoyed another glass of wine and my wife's Coconut Shrimp arrived. Oh my! 3 broiled shrimp perhaps marinated a few minutes in coconut milk but not at all what was expected. Neither was the dipping sauce that was so watered it would not coat the shrimp. I love shrimp more than 'Bubba Gump' so we did finished them. As we had been tortured enough with their food and our beneficial seating location taken away, it was time to go...and so check please! Well to our surprise the soup had not been removed from the bill. My wife (Native Québécois) ask in the nicest way and he said he could not because it had already been eaten...only about 3 teaspoons had been tasted and the bowl was full. Ok, out with the bad on on to something better. Well since we visit several times a year and this was our first time at this very expensive restaurant we were very optimistic but they will never be welcomed to any more of my money. Most of my reviews of restaurants have been positive and I hate to write negative but I would be dismissive to not warn others. Over the weekend, three colleagues and I met for lunch at Louis Hébert, an AAA/CAA-rated restaurant a few blocks from the hotel where we all staying. The restaurant is located in a former mansion near a variety of upper-class boutiques and dining establishments. Though the majority of the population in the area speaks French, the waiter was fluent in English in order to help the one woman in our group not well-versed in French. The server, Guy, generously shared his personal favorites on the menu and also helped to pick out an appropriate wine to go along with our varied main courses (entrées, though that term is less often used in Quebec). I ordered the Grilled beef sirloin steak served with an old-fashioned mustard sauce and was as equally pleased with the prompt and friendly service as I was with the fresh, appealing food service. The salad was made with fresh greens and had a sweet, yet savory homemade Parmesan Ranch dressing that was a real treat itself. I ordered my steak medium well and it fit that specification perfectly, with just a small amount of pink on the inside and a moderately firm, yet not overdone texture. Though slightly pricey for a lunch, the portions were filling for everyone in my party and the complementary coffee at the end of the meal was a nice surprise. While we were walking alone the street and read every restaurant menus outside in the cold (-36°F), we were led to the restaurant by this this girl who was guarding the front door. The restaurant had a warm and relaxing and French style atmosphere. The menu items were about 33-/+ and the food was absolutely delicious. However, I was surprised and a bit unhappy to find out that the tips were already included in the bill. I had a feeling that this was only me because we were tourists and they're afraid that we wouldn't tip 15%+ although I normally do 15-17% depending on the service...thus the 4 star. I don't think a 5 star restaurant would include tips in their bill. read more

After scouring restaurant menus inside and outside of Vieux Quebec, we decided on this restaurant because our first choice was closed. We chose to sit inside and were pleasantly surprised at the formal traditional decor (outside looked like a typical urban chic place). We ordered from the 15$ midi menu - 3 cream of vegetable soups (tasty but lacked a little depth of flavor); 1 tomato, bocchini, & caper salad (very good). For entrees we had the cod filet (very nice plating and great flavor profile), 2 flank steaks (ordered medium well but medium would have been much better), and one chèvre omelette (15$) substituting epinard for prosciutto. We finished up with coffee and tea (included in the meal) and added on desserts @ 2.50$ each - strawberries and blueberries with whipped cream & maple syrup, and blueberry "pie" which was better than expected because it was actually a tart. We stopped in one evening during Carnaval after reviewing several menus outside of several restaurants along this strip. For starters I had the green salad and my husband had French onion soup, both were excellent. They had an extensive selection of excellent wines! My husband has eaten here when he's come to Quebec on business and this time I came for the drive. An October drive with brilliant foliage on either side of the road is an awesome experience! Also, my wife ordered a salad that never came (we were not charged). My biggest complaint is that I ordered from the table d'hotel menu, which was to include appetizer, entree and dessert, and I was charged for the dessert.
