Finally made it!! It's been on my list for so many years. I got the cheese burger, they asked if I wanted onions and tomato and said yes. The meat is cooked to medium and it took about 5 minutes to get my order. It's cut in half and the burger was good and juicy. It was bit weird eating a hamburger on a regular toast bun, but it was good. I could get use to it. Thankfully it wasn't busy. There were only five folks in the store - all eating. This is absolutely the best burger I ever had. I am so glad that I made this trip to Connecticut all the way from Maryland. This is super worth it, maybe more than Connecticut famous pizzas. The owner was super kind, attentive, and wholesome. I will visit again tomorrow, to try potato salad. It was out unfortunately when I visited today. The burger is perfectly cooked as medium rare, so melty and juicy. So fresh ingredients. The burger was only $8 including tax, and they also accepted apple pay and credit cards. Added Louis' Lunch to my to-do list once I found out that this is supposedly where burgers originated. Established in 1895, the place still maintains the antique facade, very cool. I ordered the original burger with cheese and onions and it is amazing how they cook the burger patties in the old style vertical grill. The cooked patties came out juicy. The burger patty was cooked well done and the seasoning and taste of the burger overall was good. I just wished the patty was less cooked, like a medium rare would've been perfect and made the burger taste even better. It is a bit pricy ($7ish), but worth trying. Louis Lunch is allegedly the home of the modern hamburger. Some may argue its origins. I think these guys popularized it. Let's go with that and avoid blowing up the comments section of this review. You come in, you order the hamburger; end of transaction. They decide how you want it, a rarity with the modern restaurant but oddly in-place here. I will say that medium-rare is a little on the wet side, but they do deliver a great hamburger, regardless of how many napkins you need. Don't ask for ketchup. It doesn't belong on a modern burger, and it doesn't belong on a classic burger, either. I will die on this hill. Eat a tomato. I lived in the New Haven area all my life and I can't believe I never ate one of their burgers. My uncle use to come here at least once a week and lived until his 90s (so much for people saying, meat is bad for you) . I got the basic burger with tomato. I decided to get it without the bread. This was so I could get the true taste of the meat. They have a special cast Iron ttto cook it on, so there is no grease on the meat. It's also was cooked , medium rare . The meat was delicious and was as good as all the reviews stated. It had a great taste and was juicy. If you never ate one of their burgers, it's worth the experience. Remember this was the restaurant that invented the hamburger and family run since 1896. This place is the holy grail of Hamburger establishments. We've been watching this place of tv for decades and finally made the trip here to taste it for ourselves!! What can I say?? This place has been in business since 1895, and they're doing something right for sure. We had their hamburgers with cheese on toasted bread and seriously, the meat is very good!!! If I lived close I'd eat here everyday!!! We also loved their homemade potato salad and homemade pies, everything was top notch!!! Clean restaurant and very friendly staff!!! Had to take my burger loving boyfriend to where the first hamburger was invented! We went on a Saturday night which it was not too busy at all. We ordered at the counter for takeout and waited for some seats to open up, which they did. The two men working the counter and making the burgers were nice and attentive. There is a sign that says the burgers are only cooked to medium, however depending on where your burger was lined up in the cooker, some burgers were a bit rarer than others. I am a big ketchup and mayo lover on my burgers so its always a bit daunting going to a place that forbids condiments but frankly you really don't miss it here. The burgers are juicy, and the tomato provides the perfect amount of crispness to the hot burger. You can also add cheese and grilled onions on top of the white bread but that's about it when it comes to burger toppings. Don't forget to order a slice of pie or chips to accompany this historical burger. I love the building itself, the history it holds and the secrets it can tell. Seating is limited. Utterly unique and charming. Absolutely worth a visit, provided you are into hamburgers. If not, well you probably want to eat somewhere else. The burger is delicious (yes, there was a bit of red or pink), but it was very tasty. I didn't find it to be a tourist trap. The main reason being that you could immediately spot the locals. There isn't much room inside, so I wouldn't take a large group. Then again, provided the weather isn't too harsh, I would rather go and have to eat outside than to miss going. I swear, I really wanted to love this place. I went out of my way, as in at least 100 miles out of my way from Providence, Rhode Island, to eat at the original home of the hamburger. These operators are completely desecrating and destroying the opportunity they have here. The food was terrible. TERRIBLE! It's so sad, because the building has so much character and history, they have a birds nest on the ground and are completely wasting it. They are trying to take the character of the "soup Nazi" from Seinfeld, and adapt it to a burger joint. "We make it our way, and if you don't like it, no burger for you, leave." I have had this on my list to do for years now and this visit wasn't even a planned one. It was a total surprise being a group of friends that I was with were visiting Via across the street and BAM! There was Louis Lunch. I'm still getting my bearings when it comes to where things are in New Haven, so what a nice surprise. This is an experience! When you walk into the wooden door you are transported to a magical old school way of burgers. Like the year 1900 old school. Look around. There's so much history. And, I have never seen burgers prepared this way ever. Take a look at some of the pics that I posted. Wow. Louis' Lunch is the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich in 1900. That's pretty cool. I was definitely feeling the history inside. We ordered four burgers. One with Cheese, one with Cheese and Onion, One with Cheese Tomato and Onion and Cheese and Tomato. I'm usually not a big tomato fan, but it was definietly delicious on this burger. Also- no condiments here. I don't even think you'd need any. The burgers were clean, juicy and delicious. When Yelping, you always want to have the opportunity to try new experiences, especially if said experience gives way to some edible history. So going to Louis' Lunch was an easy decision for myself and my buddies a few weeks ago to try the apparent originator of the hamburger. Well, it actually wasn't so easy. Louis' has evaded me for years. Their hours, being closed on Sundays and Mondays and all (that's right all) of August, never matched up with my schedule/timing in Connecticut. Lines and crowds also didn't sound appetizing, so when I planned a day trip to Connecticut specifically around this place, I made sure that we did it early (when they opened) and on a Saturday. Good thing too, because when we walked up to this little standalone luncheonette there were already ten people waiting to enter. When the door was unlocked we were amongst the bunch (on the cusp of standing outside on this frigid January day) who made it into Louis' walls. These walls have seen a thing or two and you can tell from the carvings and writings. The setup screams something almost medieval with their wooden seats and tiny tables attached to them. Luckily, being so early we were able to snag enough of their one large table to seat all six of my party, which was another positive notch on our timing as eventually people stood around waiting for a spot to sit. I mean it might happen to you because you'll get that order in pretty quickly once you're at the counter. Seriously, this place is the king of no frills. Hamburger, cheeseburger, potato salad, chips, pie. Done. There's nothing else to try. No secret menu items (this ain't In-N-Out!). Just straight up history between two pieces of white bread. That's right, as stated earlier, Louis' Lunch does hold the torch as the first place in the ol' US of A to throw a meat patty (always cooked medium rare) between some carbs and call it a day. For me, I went with cheese (a wiz more than actual slices due to the incredibly interesting way the burgers are cooked, check the pics) as well as tomato and onion, the only toppings available. Oh and don't forget to ask for ketchup...hopefully people read all of my review (sorry, it's long) because I mean that with every ounce of sarcasm I can muster up. DO NOT ASK FOR KETCHUP! The signs help, but just know it's about tasting the meat here, not dousing your handheld in red paste. So how was it? Solid. Good. Decent. Tasty. Meaty. Was it out of this world? Well here's the thing, honestly, I unfortunately get why Louis' overall Yelp rating isn't higher. This burger is nothing necessarily special, especially if you attempt to take your tastebuds and match them up with the crazy types of patty's concocted with different cuts and blends of meat along with unique toppings and condiments and so on that you'll find at so many other burger-forward storefronts. Don't get me wrong, I love a good ol' burger from just about any contemporarily modern fast food/quick serve spot, but that's not Louis' and it's wrong for anyone to expect that. It's history and it's not gonna change for you. So with that in mind, Louis' burger, on white bread, did the trick for me. Oh, and their eggy potato salad was also pretty legit. Overall, Louis' Lunch is nothing that you or I can't do on a grill with a meat patty and a loaf of Wonder, but without Louis' we may not have gotten to where we are today. So if you want to taste what originality is like, go to Louis' Lunch and try the first American burger, score some tasty potato salad (don't forget to wash things down with a Foxon Park soda!), and basque in something that's older than your great grandma. Louis' Lunch is a hamburger restaurant that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1895. It was founded by Danish immigrant Louis Lassen. He was a blacksmith by trade and a preacher by vocation. In 1895, he purchased a wooden food cart and began selling lunch items at a spot on Meadow Street near many factories. One day in 1900, a local businessman stopped by and asked for a quick lunch on the go. Lassen placed his own blend of ground steak trimmings between two slices of toast and sent the man on his way. Soon he would focus exclusively on selling hamburgers. In 1907, Lassen began parking his cart at a permanent location on George Street. 10 years later, he moved into a square brick building (a former tannery) at 202 George Street. In 1974, urban renewal threatened to demolish Louis' Lunch so the building was moved to its present day location at 261 Crown Street. Today the eatery is run by Lassen's great grandson Jeff Lassen. Over the years, many have claimed that Lassen actually invented the hamburger (the name likely was derived from 'Hamburg steak'). Even the Library of Congress recognized him as such in 2000. However, several others have also made similar claims. An 1894 illustration from the Shiner Gazette shows an advertisement for hamburgers at Barny's Saloon in Moulton, Texas. Others claim that the hamburger was invented even earlier in the 1880s. It would seem that trying to determine who invented the hamburger would be like trying to determine who invented pizza. One thing for sure is that the hamburger seems to have gained national recognition at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Although Louis' Lunch may not have invented the hamburger, it is certainly the oldest continually operating hamburger restaurant in the country. I've eaten at Louis' Lunch multiple times over the years. I recently stopped in for lunch when I had a half day off from work. The meat patties are cooked vertically in the original 1898 metal gas-powered stoves that Louis Lassen used. Instead of buns, the burgers are served on slices of white bread that are toasted in the original 1929 toaster. The establishment has very strict rules: it's cash only and the only available toppings are cheese spread, onion and tomato. There is no ketchup (don't even ask) and no Coca-Cola. I ordered my usual: a cheeseburger with "the works", a side of potato salad, and a bottle of Foxon Park white birch beer. Lassen uses an excellent blend of ground beef that's so flavorful. This is history and a bucket list place to eat. I've seen enough posts and videos from all of the foodies on the internet. I finally was in Connecticut and could not miss out. We got here just before it opened up and there was quite a line. The place is tiny and not a lot of room to move along but so worth it. After waiting for a short time and walking in, you get the historic feel with those original burners and toaster as well as the iconic bench seats. All of the photos and videos didn't do it justice. I chatted with the chef for a bit as he was making all of the burgers himself and it was non stop packed. The history of the oldest burger joint in America was now in my hands and it was incredible. Maybe I was hungry or maybe it was the way it was cooked in the old broilers but this was one of the best burgers I've ever had! To be honest, I came here with the lowest expectations. I didn't really expect much given that people mainly come here for historic reasons, more than food reasons. Louis' Lunch claims to be the inventor of the hamburger - and they still sell the same hamburger that they did years ago. The burgers are cooked with the same exact antique upright broilers that were used way back in the day. Historically, it's a nifty place to visit and see. However, the place is pretty small and there are no modifications to the burger. Also cash only. But despite all this, the burger was actually...pretty tasty. Yeah, I really didn't expect much, but the bread was oddly nice and toasty which complemented the burger well. We opted for no cheese, and got the "works" which came with onions and tomato. Overall, the burger was tasty (not the best burger in the world, mind you) - but you could certainly taste the quality of the meat. It was a simple and good burger. And either way was really cool to visit. I came with a couple friends, and tried the cheeseburger with tomatoes and onions. One thing that everyone (who hasn't read reviews beforehand - and I hadn't!) is surprised and shocked by is that the burger comes not on a bun but **between pieces of toast**!! So that was really interesting. But, the burger and the meat was indeed really good!! One of my final stops in New Haven was Louis' Lunch. While the punctuation kills me (gah!), I had a great burger in a historic site. I can't say I've ever had a broiled burger, but it was super juicy. Yes, even without the ketchup, it was stellar. I'd recommend going for the tomatoes and the onions both on your burger. (They are your own condiment options, anyway!) The space is tiny, but the crowd moves quickly. My husband and I sat in the throne-like seats to the side of the area, which was cool for people watching while chowing down. What an amazing experience to see these old up right charbroiled thick patties roasting for the next eager costumer. This tiny all brick building is where simplicity sells. Hamburger or cheeseburger, tomato and onion? Homemade potato salad or chips? Homemade pie? What flavors do you have today? Blueberry, apple, or strawberry? We waited for over 30 minutes for our burgers, but to taste the nostalgia of history was beyond worth the wait. An extremely basic, medium well burger was juicy and tasted as if your mom cooked it at home. The charred onion was not over whelming and the tomato was just that extra something, so you don't have to worry about condiments. The potato salad was a home run with hardly any taste of mayo or mustard, but pure creamy spud goodness. The homemade apple pie was phenomenal, which was slightly sweet, crunchy chunks of apples, and a wonderful flakey crust. Overall review: service (4/5) you are going to wait, so don't go during your lunch hour and food (4/5) your basic hamburger patty on toasted bread (seasoning needed, but I truly didn't care.
