Glenwood Drive-In is a historic family restaurant that opened in Hamden, Connecticut in 1955. It was founded by Rocky Stone. The property was originally a small drive-in that operated under a different name. Stone purchased the drive-in after working as a Tip-Top salesman and deliveryman. He renamed it "Glenwood" and expanded the menu, hours and the physical building. After Stone passed away in 1960, his son Frank "Wayne" Stone took it over and he continues to run it today. In the early days, the Glenwood had a walk-up service window similar to establishments such as Dairy Queen. Over the years, Wayne remodeled the interior and added an indoor seating area. The menu consists of staples such as footlongs, chili dogs, cheeseburgers, clam strips, lobster rolls, soft shell crab, fries, onion rings, and much more! Although the establishment is no longer a traditional drive-in restaurant, the Glenwood still hosts classic car "Cruise Nights" every Wednesday during the warmer months. In 1985, Wayne's daughter opened "Kelly's Cone Connection": an adjoining ice cream parlor business that is connected to the Glenwood. Although both businesses share the same space, they operate as separate entities. Kelly makes all of her own ice cream, hot fudge, waffle cones, ice cream pies and birthday cakes in house. Customers can expect to choose from about 35 different flavors on any given day. My family and I recently stopped for dinner at Glenwood Drive-In. Growing up in the area, I visited the Glenwood several times throughout my childhood. I also frequently accompanied my father to "Cruise Nights" when he still owned a 1971 Triumph TR6. On this outing, we ordered a variety of menu items including a "Chili Cheese Dog", "Footlong", "Chicken Fingers w/ Fries", and "Fried Shrimp w/ Fries". There's something about those classic menu staples that just really hit the spot. Afterwards, we headed through the adjoining doorway to Kelly's Cone Connection for dessert. It was a special occasion because the ice cream parlor was hosting a meet & greet with Spider-Man himself. The event coincided with the release of a new monthly special called the "Spidey-Sundae" (Firework 250 Poprock ice cream w/ golden Oreos, a frosting and sprinkle rim w/ a cotton candy web, poprocks, & a Spider-Man ring). My sons both had a blast meeting Spider-Man and eating his special ice cream treat. I tried a different monthly special: the "New England Clam Chowder" (sweet cream salted caramel ice cream w/ white chocolate "clams", dried mint, vanilla wafers, white chocolate shell). The presentation was immaculate and the flavor combo was simply divine! I recently went to family owned,local fave Glenwood Drive-In and ordered a cheeseburger, a New England-style hot dog(top split buns), & a basket of shrimp w/ fries. Overall, it was ok(not amazing, but def not average or forgettable either).It landed in that middle space for me where the food was solid enough to enjoy, just w/o anything really blowing me away. The ordering style felt very fast-paced & cafeteria-like which made the experience feel quick & efficient. The staff moved things along smoothly, so even though it was busy, I didn't wait long. The New England-style hot dog was pretty straightforward. The flame-broiled cheeseburger was a little overcooked for me. 98 yr old Grandma loves lobster rolls so when we visit we get her a lobster roll! Personally I prefer cold lobster with a grilled bun..., however when in CT you get a Connecticut Lobster Roll! I've heard about this place from many people and it does live up to the hype. It's has an old-school vibe. I really like my hotdogs charred and almost burnt and this place delivers with that. Once you get your hotdog, there's a filling station where you can add your toppings. Chili has a nice kick. Stopped by the Glenwood Drive-In for a quick bite to eat after a recommendation in the area. This is your typical drive-in spot down the street from Quinnipiac. Good amount of parking and its smooth well oiled machine in terms of ordering, place has been around over 65 years. I went with the chili-cheese dog, could choose American or nacho, I went with nacho and an order of "Frings." Frings must be the locals term, it's an order half onion rings, half fries. They also have a nice condiment bar on the side with some hot pepper relish among others. Plenty of booths inside or side counters to sit and eat at. Chili-cheese dog was great, no shortage in terms of size, wish the chili had a kick to it, but still good, great toasted bun. The Frings were also enjoyable, quality onion ring that didn't fall apart upon taking a bite, fries were ok, could've been better. Service was quick and friendly, no complaints. This is hands down one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had in the state of Connecticut. And I have had a LOT over the last 12 years I have lived here. The proportion of lobster to butter to bun was perfect. The staff were incredibly nice. If I could give them 20 stars I would. So flavorful, and the onion rings were amazing and didn't even need dipping sauce. And I'm from the Midwest and I use condiments on everything so if I say they don't need sauce, that's saying something. Glenwood has been on my Hot Dog Try List for a while because area friends like it. I recently tried it for the first time. Glenwood grills long Hunmels, so that they have a bit of char and pop. The hot dogs extend off both sides of the bun, which is not my favorite thing, because I like toppings and bun in each bite. Glenwood is not a place with a bunch of specialty dog options that they top for you. They do have a serve yourself condiment bar. The good news is that when you have such a long hot dog, you can actually make two sets of toppings on each half of the hot dog. I topped one half of each dog with mustard and kraut and one half with mustard and relish. All of the toppings were about average. I'm good with standard mustard and relish, but I prefer a hot homemade kraut. The dog itself was good. The bun was fresh. Decided to try something different for dinner. This is a no frills restaurant that touts doing things traditionally. Inside of the establishment was plain, staff was friendly. I got fried shrimp and chicken tenders. The tartar sauce came free, but I also bought two of their special sauces: spicy Cajun bayou sauce and buffalo blue cheese sauce. The chicken and shrimp were tender and juicy, but the breading could've been a bit more flavorful. The sauces, however, elevated things very nicely. The tartar sauce was tangy and delicious. I don't enjoy the flavor of buffalo sauce without blue cheese, so I appreciated that sauce as well. Finally, the bayou sauce was the most impressive. Spicy and savory, it went perfectly with both the chicken and the shrimp. I recommend this sauce the most. Pretty good food overall. I'll definitely be back for more. read more

In the 6 years I lived in New Haven, I never managed to make it over to the The Glenwood Drive In. So on my trip home to visit family, everyone kept saying how we needed to come here. First thing's first: I have never felt so unwelcome in any establishment. Upon our entry, I heard and saw the girl at the counter make a comment about my appearance and shoot dorty looks. Yes, I get it. I don't look normal. I dress how I like, I'm covered in tattoos, and I have crazy colored hair. But you know what? I just spent $34 on some flavorless clam strips and a greasy lobster roll. The least you could do is pretend that you are happy I'm here to pay money for your food. I counted no less than 4 eye rolls, dirty squints, and annoyed sighs in my direction. To be honest, none of the employees looked happy to be there... So the food: the clams were actually cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the lacked any kind of flavor. Like seriously, they didn't even taste like clams. Just. Nothing. The lobster roll was tasty, and if I liked a roll with hot lobster cooked in butter it would have totally been my jam. It's because of this that Glenwood gets one starinstead of zero. They can't help my personal food preferences... I like my lobster cold on a toasted roll with just a smidge of butter. But as we were walking there was one girl who was talking about the customer in front of us which I thought was unprofessional because the customer heard her as well and approached the manager . A solid chili dog to finish our trek Stop 6 of 6, and we ended up at glenwood to try one of their dogs. The staff were very friendly, the menu is a little limited. They highlight their seafood a lot for a dog place, but the plates covered in tin foil indicated that the seafood was a very popular item. This being our 6th stop for a dog, we split a single chili dog with some onion rings. Food comes out quickly, we take pics and dig in. Onion rings, not great. not salted and the batter not seasoned. you effectively get flour and grease. not very good. The dog, that was really good. A good grill on the bun, chili had a little spice to it, hot dog had a nice snap to the casing. Good hallmarks of a solid dog. Decor is very much a very old school restaurant, but it's well maintained and cleaned. It kinda resembles a very old wendys. but cleaner. A great stop for our last dogs of the day, but not the best. I have been going to Glenwood for most of my life. It is attached to Kelly's cone connection which is part of the father daughter business. It gives off that old-fashioned driving and feel. Not much has changed since I started going when I was a kid. I always look forward to their foot-long hotdogs and hamburgers. I love that they have a toppings bar so you can load up your own dog. It's one of the very few spots that'll eat a chili cheese dog. They have other options like fried seafood, such as softshell crab and clam strips. The place is in serious need of a redo cracked tile on the floor dirty panels on the ceiling and just an overall dumpy atmosphere, some would call this nostalgic I call it lazy ownership and not reinvesting back into the business now for the price, it is absolutely outrageous to charge $10 for a hotdog and onion rings or french fries. I've been going to Glenwood Drive-In for 25 years, but after today, I won't return. My fries were cold, and when I returned to the counter and politely asked for fresh ones, the staff laughed and left the basket on the counter. After waiting, I finally received a new batch, but they were purposefully overcooked. Before I returned to my booth, the tall young man manning the grill told me that since "I was the one who complained" about the quality of my fries that I am responsible for throwing out my original basket of my dry, semi worked fries-still resting on the counter. Unlike my many previous visits to this Hamden institution, this time there was a lack of adult supervision; more specifically the service was poor, prices were higher, food quality declined ( paper thin burger patty), and cleanliness was an issue. Disappointing experience overall. I hope someone from the Stone (Frank, I am talking to you) family reads this review and takes corrective action. Glenwood has been around for almost 70 years serving the Hamden community great drive in food. I love to stop in and grab a couple of dogs and fries. They have typical drive in style food. Hit dogs, hamburgers, and some seafood and other options. All of their food is fresh and cooked to order, you may have to wait a short period of time, but it is worth it. They also will take phone orders. A little pricey for burgers and dogs, but the food quality is good. I like my fries well done and they always cook them just right! Another reason why I continue to visit. No frills self service dining is available for eat in but I always tend to get take out. The one thing that has always bothered me is that Glenwood does not have proper take out containers. Its always a cardboard tray wrapped in aluminum foil. Getting food home is sometimes quite treacherous. That is the only thing I would ask to change, and what truly stops me from 4 stars. Glenwood also has Cruise Nights in the summer and you can catch some pretty nice antiques in the lot. Make you way to Glenwood Drive in on Whitney and check them out. read more

I have been going to Glenwood for over 50 years. It was a great place to have a burger, hot dog and fries! Recently the service and quality have significantly changed. The counter staff is rude using foul language and being disrespectful. This has never been the case until now. I brought back an order of fries since you could tell they had been fried once and refried again. They were dripping oil! When I went back in they said that is the way they cook them. Not true - it never happened before. I was initially ignored by a person. That had no business dealing with the public. Another gentleman ordered whole belly clams and got strips. They wouldn't give him a correct order and gave him his money back as they did me for the fries. I plan on going over to speak with the owner (whom I've known for years) today. There should always be a supervisor or manager available during open hours. This was extremely disappointing and totally unnecessary. Hire people with skills especially people skills. Additionally, anyone touching food should be wearing gloves- they were not. read more
