It's not so much that I've had familiarity with Lou's Barber Shop over my few years in JAX, but my barber, Nam, I have been familiar with since 2019. Long and short: Nam moved over to Lou's during COVID and I relocated to San Diego for three years. Upon my return, I needed to get a fresh start with Nam once again. I really like this barber shop. I just about always used barbers on the military bases through my years of service. But when I have a great barber, I'm always willing to drive a few extra miles to maintain consistency. Also, as I've watched Nam cut other men's hair while waiting, she treats all of us with amazing courtesy and respect - and has a great sense of humor! Well, you get the picture, getting a haircut is more about the barber than barber shop itself. However, there are some things you need to know before visiting Lou's. Yes - they do take appointments, just give them a call. It's a nice facility that's well taken care of. Chairs are comfortable and spacing is good between them. Important!!! They are CASH ONLY here, Prices range from $18 for a men's haircut. Seniors (55 and over) haircuts are $15. There is no military discount. They do have a stylist who cuts females' hair. Contact the shop for pricing. If I had only one recommendation I think the shop needs to fix its bathroom a bit. It appears unclean and needs a towel dispenser. I'm not always overly concerned about the appearance of a place when proper cleaning and having needed items to ensure a safe environment are in place. If they aren't, that's always a concern. I hope the ownership of Lou's will consider this and make some fixes to the bathroom. I will say I've greatly enjoyed my visits as it's always easy to strike up a conversation with the gentleman waiting for a haircut next to you, or just having a fun time with the barber as my photos show! Don't come here if you are under the age of 50 or want a modern hairstyle. Anything different from a traditional side part which is all they are capable of. I usually have a textured fringe and coming in; I explained I wanted no length off the front and Ken decided to cut a half inch off anyways. Ken is a very nice guy and does great work. He has a steady hand and gives honest old school haircuts and beard trims. The shop is tidy and comfortable but the waiting area is simple. At a barber shop you are going for a reason, not to hang out or have a beer, so that's totally fine with me. Walk-ins are welcome and that was a big selling point for me as I don't really plan ahead when it comes to my hair etc. If I go to Walmart and I feel like getting a haircut, I want to be able to do so. ‍ I don't want to deal with appointments. read more

I went early on a Saturday morning when they first opened, so I was able to walk in and jump in the chair with no wait. I started going here when I found out that my favorite barber Ken now works here. I move around a lot and every place I move to, I always make it a point to find a barber who can give me not only the haircut I want, but also the haircut that's best for me when I myself have doubts. Suffice it to say, I'm not one to just settle for the closest supercuts. Admittedly, it took me a while to find Ken but it was worth all the mediocre haircuts and barbers I had to endure prior to him. In my opinion, he's the best barber in Jacksonville! If you know Ken, then you know this to be absolutely true. He really listens to you and makes sure that both of you are on the same page before even starting on your hair. Aside from his calm, relaxing demeanor, he's also very light on his hands and gentle with your head. Bonus points as well for being able to talk to you about pretty much anything under the sun (for us it's gaming). I've been having Ken cut my hair for 2 years now and so long as I'm in Jacksonville, I trust no one else with my hair but good old #KenTheBarber. The fact that this establishment is both a barbershop AND a salon also means that my wife and I can come in to have our hair done together. She's been looking for a good hairdresser that won't cost an arm and a leg and it looks like we found our spot. Where else can you turn a haircut into a bonding experience with your spouse? So my fiance just went and got his hair done here. I'm not sure who did it but I swear his head is messed up. Its uneven, the sides were done improperly and the top just looks a mess. Generally when you go to a barber to get a haircut, you expect the barber to pay attention to what is going on with the cut and the hair that is falling on the apron (or whatever the wrap they put on is called). I am not even sure what to say here. I never got the mirror treatment to look at the back of my head post cut, and when the cut was done, the apron was dragged off instead of lifted so all the hair clippings dumped in my lap. My haircut was a distant second to gossip going on all around me. Seldom has the reason I was somewhere been so ignored. I was never even asked if I was satisfied with the cut (that I could see) or if it had been cut the way I wanted. The haircut just ended. Odd to say the least. My expectations for a haircut are really pretty low. Cut it, keep it even, and well, that is pretty close to all I expect. This place barely reached that mark. And if I can ever see what the back of my head looks like, it might not even make that. read more

He said he felt grossed out by even putting his head into the shampoo chair and the sink was filthy. This place was filthy. I found mold near my station, the sink was rusty, and the scissors were not sharp. They didn't do what I said at all; I asked for two inches off the ends and the curl it lightly. I walked out with a pixie cut and almost a perm. I don't know how there was a miscommunication, but I was infuriated. They say they don't have to followed normal hairdresser guidelines because they are an "independent organization". The lady cutting my hair promoted her Facebook and gave me a sheet of paper that said her account. I went on it, and there were mysterious videos of clients getting haircuts and poorly edited selfies. This place needs to be shut down, and reported. It is disgusting, has horrible service, and the employees are so disrespectful. Put this place out of business. read more

I have been going to Lous for close to two decades now. Tisa is the barber who takes care of me. She does a great job considering I keep coming back year after year. I am not the easiest client to deal with, yet she puts up with me and is more than accommodating for my peculiarities. The staff is friendly and the environment is relaxed. The facility is not a five star spa...but its a barber shop and I wouldn't expect nor desire for it to be! read more

Don't know who all the women are in the photos, they weren't there when I got my hair cut. I'll have to go back and look for them. Just moved into the area and was in the shopping center where this shop is located. Plenty of parking. It's next to a Walmart supermarket. Walked in just after 5 on a weekday. It has maybe 10 chairs and there were two women cutting older gentlemen's hair. They greeted me and said I was next. No one else but me there. Had maybe a ten minute wait. The place was nice and clean. The decor may be a little dated, but so am I. Linda cut my hair and did a very nice job and was pretty fast. $14 for the cut. I'm happy and will be back read more
