Julia Morgan, California's first licensed woman architect, is known for her work at Hearst Castle, in addition to her work in SF, Oakland, No. California and for the design and construction of YWCA buildings throughout California, Utah, Arizona, and Hawaii including 14 structures at the Asilomar Conference Grounds (originally YWCA) in Pacific Grove. After watching stuff on TV I decided to Google, not expecting to find a group in my backyard! (practically) So I jumped at the chance to go on a local History & Haunt Tour with them. We walked around the Mission museum (behind the Playhouse), HS, church, cemetery and ending at the doors of the Playhouse. As we were walking up to the doors of the Playhouse their was a strong floral scent. As the organizers thanked everyone for attending they walked towards the sidewalk. My daughter, Michelle (organizer), and myself stayed behind. I love old buildings so I asked my daughter to take a few pictures. As we walked away we heard the Playhouse doors open and slam shut!! Now these doors are huge. So you can imagine how loud that was. Before the tour ended Michelle had pulled on the doors and they were locked. We stood still for a second, turned around expecting/wishing someone to be standing there. The 3 of us ran up to the doors, we tried pulling on the doors again and they were locked and now the inside lights were on. My daughter and I stared at each other and then at Michelle. It was the weirdest feeling. We eventually caught up with everyone else and told them what they missed. We've also attended their Scary Movie Night at Savannah Cemetery. That was cool. We also made it to Paranormal Night II which I convinced my husband to attend. We're planning on going to the meet-up at Devils Gate Dam. I listened to Michelle's GB session on Facebook, can't wait! On the car ride home from their events I always tell my daughter...."we found our people"! So believers and non-believers attend one of their local events. A bit of Valley history here! When I found out about Tarzana Safari Walk I got excited. Unfortunately it's nothing exotic about the area. It's part of Ventura Blvd. with generic stores on it and chain coffee shop. Sometimes they might do a small street fair (maybe that was years ago). Now it's just a regular block in the Valley. No exotic walks or hikes. Just yiur regular urban jungle!

Today my kids and I enjoyed the annual Safari Walk/Sidewalk Fair in Tarzana. Many activities take…read moreplace while you dine and shop along Ventura Blvd at Yolanda Ave. Activities included: face painting, balloon twisting/animals, music, drum & dance performance, martial arts performance, lectures on Tarzana history & more! Face painting & balloons: it was super hot today so my son opted for having something painted on his arm other than his face and sweating it all off and looking crazy. He wanted a skull and the lady did a great job. She was very fast and you can tell she's been doing this for a while! My daughter got a flower on her leg and it was very pretty and done in literally 15 seconds. She also got a flower balloon bracelet that was really cool. Thanks to the 2 wonderful ladies working the booth :) Performances: Sensei Ash Martial arts performed and the kids showed off their martial arts skills. (I wish I took pictures) I noticed it was a mixture of all levels: green belt, orange, blue etc. I was super impressed and my 9 year old now wants to sign up and join. You can tell those kids carry great discipline and confidence as they were doing high kicks and karate chops as well as cool ninja rolling/tumbling on the mat. African Drum & Dancing: this was really fun! I love how they included and interacted with the crowd and taught us the meaning of their dance moves and some of us had the guts to get in front of everyone and dance along. We even learned the words to their chant but I can't remember anymore. They also let kids come up and play drums and other instruments. Pretty awesome :) Live animals: this was scheduled for 2:30pm so we arrived in front of Chase bank where it was taking place but had to wait a while because they were running late. Now when I heard "live animals" for some reason I thought elephants, lions, tigers and bears lol. My kids were pretty disappointed when the "animal show" showed up in storage bins. Reptiles and some birds I believe. After my son pet a snake we left. Oh well. Even though it was just super hot out today that didn't matter. You can see the families enjoying themselves and the kids were happy and having a great time. Looking forward to next year.

So many things I have never noticed before. Things that I passed by hundreds of times and never paid attention to. Jenny was our tour guide and I could have not asked for a Better guide. I have gone on these types of tours in different cities and always felt very rushed. Jenny was awesome about time she didn't push us to make every location at a specific time. We did the entire tour except for the bike portion and our group was okay with not going that. So we ended up grabbing some dinner and drinks! I will be booking the different tours in the future!

We got to ride the metro the bus and we were gonna ride a bike but we just ran out of time because we took so many pictures and stayed at the farmers market longer than we should have but that was ok because we were really enjoying ourselves. We also went to the LaBrea Tar Pits which was nice because I had never been there! All in All A very good time was held by everyone. I think LA is a city where you can walk everywhere is not bike. So I feel really great about leaving this review for them. If you never done a 'free tours by foot' let me tell you they are located in different cities around the world. You go online, find your city and sign up for the tour that best interest you. At the end of the tour you are free to tip the guide whatever you thought the tour was worth, could be $10, $200 or even free! Its whatever you can afford type of thing. The tours are lead by locals that are experts in this town and obviously love the city they live in or they would not be doing this. The length of the tours depends on the city you are visiting but typically lasts about an hour or so and the walking distance is not that long plus they take lots of breaks (in the shade too). That being said let me review the free tours by foot Los Angeles. I went online and signed up and got a confirmation email to meet at the designated location on Friday. I arrived and had no trouble find my tour guide. We waited for the rest of our group to arrive and he introduced himself and went around asking the group where everyone was visiting from. He started with some basic 'housekeeping' rules and then proceded to start with a history intro on how the city got on the map. It really was more historical but that's good because that built up for the rest of the tour. Our guide would finish talking about a building and then would tell us where the next destination would be. He encouraged people to ask him questions and it was clear he was very excited to share his knowledge of the city with others. People asked him all kinds of questions and Emir always had a great answer. He had a tablet that had short movie clips or had a slideshow of some of the buildings we were looking at or famous people that helped shaped the city to what it is now. I never have seen that on a walking tour before. At the end of the tour he thanked us and mentioned he would stick around for about 15 minutes to answer any questions. He also mentioned the tour available tomorrow of downtown LA. He and his wife are the 'founders' of this city and are also tour guides (so cute). They lived in Chicago but then moved to California and then moved back to Chicago but ultimately missed California too much and decided to move back to Los Angeles. For a chapter that has only been around for 7 months, I say the tour was well put together. I went on a Hollywood walking tour and saw things like capital records building, the walk of fame, Egyptian theatre, famous restaurants, the Chinese theatre, talked about the Hollywood sign, talked about famous magicians and much more. I recommend taking a free tours by foot tour if you get a chance. These are really good ways to know a new city from a locals perspective.

Our tour guide, Jared, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the landmarks and neighborhood, and the current states of the spaces that we visited. The tour was very engaging and I loved the use of personal headsets and the big tablet he wore to show us clips of the films while we were standing right at the spot where the scene(s) were shot.
