It's cushion on the top - providing a great feel of comfort and relief, but just beneath it's firm but giving. Its perfect if you're a side sleeper. Unfortunately this was not caught upon delivery and it was signed off on, leaving us stuck with a price matched but inferior item. Be diligent when receiving your product. We should not have trusted their definition of "comparable" and the miscommunication that resulted in the lack of necessary features we believed we were receiving.
