TL;DR, my mother and I were called the n-word on my birthday. I've never written a review before but I felt obligated to warn others after such a disgusting experience. I waited a few days before writing this to allow the initial anger and shock to pass, so that this review is as objective as possible. My mother and I visited Lowell Therapeutic Massage for my birthday. From the moment we walked in, they gave us a difficult time. We ignored their poor customer service until, as they were ushering us into our separate rooms, I heard the receptionist refer to my mother and I using the n-word! I thought I misheard until she repeated herself. No matter the language, the n-word is UNMISTAKABLE. I believe she said to her colleague something like, "You get this n-word and I'll get this other n-word". I confronted her and told her that we would be leaving immediately. To add insult to injury, instead of apologizing, she demanded that we pay before leaving. Mind you, this happened at the start of the appointment, so we hadn't actually received any massage yet! Obviously I refused to pay, but to this day I don't know what service I would we have been paying for anyways? I called yesterday & booked for an appt today, 5/18 at 4pm, for my Birthday present using my gift card, we drove to the location at exact time, saw a lit OPEN sign, but the door was LOCKED with the small sign "Closed- be back at 2." Anyway, we sat there with my husband 'til 4:30p still nothing, knocked on their door, called 10x, left message, still no answer, no call back. A waste of time. Extremely disappointed. Been to this place twice. Received a massage from a woman who went by the name "Judy" - she gave a phenomenal massage. Upon leaving I left an above average tip for Judy on the table where she would find it as I didn't feel that it was any of the managers business whom was sitting out front. Female manager then chased me out into the parking lot yelling at me for not leaving gratuity - due to language barrier it was difficult to understand what she was yelling about. Very rude and very embarrassing situation - she offered no apology. Second go around - nearly one year later - the massage was done by someone with very little training and/or experience. SCAM! I called on the phone they said $60/hour, so I made an appointment. I came in and they confirmed: $60 per hour. They asked me to come back in 10 minutes because I was early. "Don't you want me to fill out paperwork?" I asked. "No..why you haven't been here before?" they replied. "No, first time". They said no problem. But when I came back in 5 minutes later they said it was actually $80 for first time customers, which makes no sense. I asked to see documentation and they pulled out a paper that said $70 dollars. She had me wait in the room while she used the phone to talk to her manager for quite some time. Eventually she put the "manager" on the phone who said that my gift certificate expired after 1 year and they were NOT going to honor it! I told her that not only is that not specified on the certificate or anywhere, but the business received money for nothing. She said she could offer me the current groupon price. I think this place might be a front for sex work or human trafficking. They called me half an hour before my appointment and said "BE HERE NOW!" I said I was driving but couldn't get there any faster! The woman who greeted me at reception didn't ask for any signatures or paperwork. She just showed me into a shady room and told me to get undressed. She apparently was also my "massage therapist." She left the door open and kept leaving the room to answer the phone and greet people who came in! She gave an okay massage when she was actually in the room, I guess, except much handsier with my breasts and abdomen than I would have preferred. But it made me really uncomfortable when she told me I was pretty, that I sounded nice, and that she loved me!! (I am not making this up). Showed up at my appointment time and it was immediately clear they didn't have their act together. They couldn't figure out where to put me for my foot cleaning so they asked me if I wanted to soak my feet in the waiting area or in a room. I said I didn't want to soak in the waiting area so they moved one of their employees out of a reclining chair in a side break room and tried to setup the foot bath there. After 5 - 10 minutes back there, they finally moved me into an actual massage room. The masseuse kept plastic gloves on during the massage which was off putting and the first time I've ever had someone do that. At one point, the masseuse was simply brushing my skin for several minutes. I commented "you can rub much harder, I prefer that" she replied "oh, i thought you were asleep". I have read some very unflattering reviews on Yelp about LTM so I thought I would add my two cents worth. Today I decided to take advantage of their $19.00 foot reflexology special that they offer from 2-4 PM. I was greeted very warmly when I arrived. The place was very quiet. The therapist who worked on my feet did a very good job and spent a full 40 minutes working on me (the special states 45 minutes). But I certainly was not going to quibble over 5 minutes after getting such a relaxing massage for a meager $19.00. No cell phones were ringing and my therapist never talked on her phone, nor were any workers talking back and forth to each other. The therapist gave me a cup of cold water upon leaving and complimentary packaged Asian cookies. She seemed pleased with her tip and gave me a hug going out the door. I'd say this is the best time to go there, so quiet and you also get the special. I will be back but probably upgrade to another special. read more
