Lowertown Brewery is located in downtown Ottawa that has a nice outdoor (covered) patio that is dog friendly. My husband, our little girl dog and I decided to have dinner here on a Friday night. We walked in around 6:10 pm and were seated immediately by the hostess. After looking over the menus, we ended up ordering: Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel, $16.25 prior to tax- This jumbo soft pretzel came with a side of mustard and a side of beer cheers. The size of this pretzel was bigger than I was expecting and surprised that it hung on a hook. One order is really perfect to share with 3 other people. I loved the beer cheese and preferred it much more over the mustard. Lowertown Salad, $18.75 prior to tax- I wanted something healthy and so I opted for a salad. I had asked our server to place the dressing on the side but I guess he forgot to put that in the order since my dressing wasn't on the side. This salad was a good size to share with another. It came with a nice spring mix, dried cranberries, shredded carrots, sliced cucumbers, goat cheese. The salad was good and did taste fresh. Butchers Experience, $39.95 prior to tax- This massive meal comes with 4 ribs, brisket, quarter chicken, cole slaw, a side and a small corn bread. My husband picked fries. This meal is really more than enough to share with 3 people. The chicken was good and the brisket was okay. The ribs were also fine. But I have had better barbecue. 20 oz El Camino- My husband opted for a beer. I wasn't a fan of it but he liked it. ---------------------------- (Total= $97.06 after tax, prior to tip) I was afraid that because we were sitting outside, that I thought the service would not be attentive. But our server was pretty good at checking up on us throughout our meal, refilling our water and taking away dirty dishes. After we were given menus by our server, the hostess that sat us earlier was so very kind to bring a bowl of water for our little girl (I didn't even ask, she just brought it out for her). This is a classic spot in the byward market and it is a common spot for a lot of LGBT events. Most notably, it is the host of a quuers for beers event where members of the community will join together once a month for a social event. They do you have some limited food items, which are subpar, but it is an enjoyable atmosphere. I have heard from other locals that I could be quite a busy spot. It might be overcrowded. I have only attended during those special LGBT events and found the environment to be quite pleasant with lots of space and spots to converse with others. read more

Came to Ottawa for work and decided to stop here to grab something to eat with my coworkers. It must of been around 3:30 pm and there was only two other people at the bar having beer. We set down and the server approached us for our order. We started with a beer and decided to share an appetizer, which were the Chicken Nachos. They were okay but nothing that would WOW me. I then asked the server what was the number selling plate in the restaurant and he said the Brisket Platter, so I decided to give it a try. The platter came with brisket, coleslaw, French fries, and a side of ketchup, one of my coworkers ordered the 1/4 chicken platter shown in the pictures. My platter was really dry and cold while my coworkers were absolutely delicious, the chicken was falling off the bones. I guess it has to do with what's fresh and in the moment, because the brisket was definitely not fresh, but the fresh fries were hot and really crispy. Overall, it was mediocre and probably won't be giving the place a second try anytime soon. read more

fun brewery to go to! they had a good amount of different types of beers, but none that i saw that they brewed themselves, so im not sure why its called a brewery. i had the Pink Fuzz, and it was so great, that i had it in other pubs too! the bartender was very nice and knowledgeable. we came back at night and had their fishbowl drinks, which were nice, but way too sweet. my boyfriend and i ordered one each, and we shouldve just ordered one and shared cause neither one was finished. the vibe is cool, they have some arcade games and the music is great! read more

This is a great spot to grab a beer and some food. Good selection of beers. I like dark lagers and this one was really good. Would definitely order again. Ordered the brisket meal which was super tasty. Also loved the coleslaw (very homemade style here, super tasty) and the mini cheddar biscuit and gravy. Salad had kale and pickled onions, a nice change from typical side salad. Atmosphere was chill, server laid back and good level of attentive. If you're eating at Lowertown, you need not look beyond the title for your expectation. With a food menu heavily focused on BBQ, this is a brewery that serves BBQ, not a BBQ joint that serves beer. The first time I went here, I was hoping to escape the summer heat, but not only did they have all the doors and windows open, they also didn't have the AC on. No big deal. (Being that it's Ottawa, this place probably doesn't even have air conditioning.) Either way, this situation called for one of their handful of cold beers on tap, which cooled me down a bit. I've now tried their lager, their red wheat and one of their seasonals. None exceeded a 5% alcohol content, but the quality was still quite good. I ordered the meatloaf burger, but was instead served the brisket sandwich. In fairness to the bartender who messed up, I discussed both options with him, so he probably got confused. That said, I was the only customer at the bar so this wasn't exactly a rush hour slip-up, but I did come in around the shift change. In the end, it didn't matter because the brisket was delicious, even though there was more bread on the sandwich than meat. The hand-cut fries, however, were the best part. Each of these bad boys is easily 1/8 of an Idaho baked potato. The second time I went here, 6 of us shared the Butcher Platter. For $49.95, you get 1/4 lb of corned beef, 1/4 lb. on pork, 1/4 lb. of brisket, 1/2 chicken, and a choice of 4 sides. We opted for two orders of fries, a side of the watermelon salad and the cole slaw. All of the sides were great, as was the corned beef, pork and brisket. But the chicken breast was as dry as the bone it was attached to. The thigh was a little more moist, but I can't speak for the wing. Bottom line is that if you go here just for their beer and fries, you'll leave content. If you're in the mood for BBQ, I recommend The Smoque Shack one block down. read more

Fresh food that is quite good. Menu is not overly large. The beef brisket was delicious. The dirty bird sandwich the chicken was cold (it's supposed to be) and was good but not nearly as flavourful as the brisket. Beer flights are served on a plate that is a neat presentation. There were 6 beers on draft so we ended up doing a small sampler while the boys decided to get some food. Bartender was lukewarm when I asked what on taps, but beers is beers so we were OK with that. We sampled Dark/Pumpkin/Bitter/Red/Lager/Raspberry Wheat. Nothing too exciting or outstanding. Just decent enough for everyday casual drinking. I did enjoy the Peanut Crusted Bacon ($5.95) and my friends shared the 1/2 Signature Meat. There was some live performers singing that evening and some comedians on stage. Not too entertaining and a little too loud for a night cap. Maybe I was just a little too tired and was ready for bed. read more

My husband and I came here for a quick stop to try some of the local beers they have on tap, and he was not disappointed. He had a beer flight sampler where you can choose any four beers they have on tap. He is partial to IPAs, so he tried the double IPA, timber slide, and a couple others the bartender recommended. I tried one of the Mason Jar Cocktails, "The Originals" (Tequila, Wildberry Syrup, Lime Juice, Fresh Berry Garnish). I would only recommend to those that enjoy tequila as it's taste comes out fairly strong. We didn't get a chance to try the food, so I am voting 4/5 based on drinks and atmosphere alone. My group's waiter was amazing. I wish I'd caught his name so that I could praise him directly. He was on point with how he took our order, delivered it, and checked up on us. The reasons for the non 5-star rating though are all beyond his control. 1) The Beer. Yeah, you can get flights. Yeah, there's a seasonal beer on tap. Yeah, the staff is knowledgeable about what they have. Those are all great things, but the beers are just super generic, and the pale ale and IPA were really meh. The stout, lager, and Bavarian seasonal were all good but nothing to write home about. I'm not up enough on Canada's craft beer scene, but this can't be the standard. 2) The strange policy they have with regards to their TVs. Now, let me pad this with the fact that this didn't bother me directly, because I wasn't there to watch TV. However, the policy is a responsibility-avoiding, first-come first-serve plan. First, let me point out that there are multiple TVs in the room, such that from any given seat at least two screens are visible. All the TVs play the same thing near as I can tell, because the policy is that if someone requests something be on the screens, that is the only thing they will have showing until it's over. Nevermind that what I usually encounter in bars is each TV more or less playing a different game. It baffles me that a massive bar shows only one thing on its screens based on the first person/group to make a request. That could either go severely in your favor or horribly against it. 3) And just generally speaking, the food was okay. Nothing specifically was off. It just, for the price, was okay. I was walking through Byward Market and spotted a sign that said buck a shuck oysters on Thursdays from 4pm, so I had to test out the oyster quality here! I got a beer flight to start ($10 to try 6 beers! Do it!) and ordered 6 oysters to start (just in case they were tiny and bad quality). To my surprise, they were large, quite meaty, and had lots of juice! (I hate when oysters are "dry" and don't come with a lot of their own juices still in the shell). They were from PEI, and came with horseradish (which was oddly wet and mushy, not dry), a pink/purple shallot sauce, and lemon wedges. I really enjoyed the quality, so I ordered 12 more. Their patio is large and comfy, and great for people watching. I would definitely come back for their oysters! I think the best quality is still Le Cellier for their buck a shuck, but...it's not on the Ottawa side! :P read more

We came for their Winterlude Beer Festival and for a bite to eat. Couldn't help but feel disappointed. The stands outside were great, other than the Lowertown booth itself - they had popcorn, which appeared free, but after we grabbed some were informed it was a whole beer token for a small cup of soggy, cold popcorn. Why not just have it be complimentary? The food in the restaurant was overpriced. The charcuterie board was $19, and consisted of a pile of crostini, a few cauliflower pieces with vinegar, a mound of cheap deli meat, and jam poured directly on the board - pretty nasty. The skillet with dip was quite good and reasonably priced. Service was incredibly poorly managed. Our waitress was pouring drinks and refilling condiments while we waited to have our orders taken. So the experience with the service... it was not busy and the poor servers with literally days on the job had no organized direction on how to manage their order taking, drink and food delivery. The staffing seemed to have been an issue... the floor manager was attempting to tend bar and the manager was MIA... staff believed they were in the back "somewhere." As a result the food staff were confused what tables were supposed to get what food, the delivery of food took about an hour to arrive... kitchen staff was banging on the bell for food pick up... we could see our order sitting under the heat lamps. We told staff we had to catch a flight however due to the disorganization and the lack of experience to prioritize they were unable to incorporate that fact in their decision making. There was a clear training and support issues here... the poor servers we're desperately trying their best but a rudderless boat can only go in circles. I could leave my review just like that, but we all know my affinity for rambling about every single aspect of a place so here I go - My dad and I were on our way to Senate and found Lowertown. The brewery is large for the area and its food menu honestly outshone the beer selection on paper. but I can pretty much drink anything (that's more of a disappointing fact than a humble fact tbh) and chose a stout. We came in on a Wednesday and found that they have wing night. For $6 [Canadian] dollars, you can get a pound of uncut wings with your choice of sauce. Personally, I am not an uncut wing fan so I did not partake. We drank our beers and enjoyed the surroundings and the warmth while we waited for different hockey games to start. The bar wasn't very busy and the people around seemed to be either regulars or meeting someone who was. Assuming I come back to Ottawa, I wouldn't mind taking another detour to Lowertown. While the reviews about the food are hit or miss, I thought a lot of the options looked tasty and worth a try. Plus it can be added to the list of reasons why I need to visit again! read more

I was part of a group that attended for dinner and drinks. When the server brought our orders out, she identified what the meal was and delivered them as members of the group claimed them. When one plate was unclaimed she approached me and said that it was mine. I told her what I had ordered and she snapped back and said this is what you ordered. I always enjoy visiting Lowertown Brewery. I like the selection of craft beers (during the Autumn season Lowertown will feature a Pumpkin Ale which is my favourite). Raspberry Wheat is another nice one, along with the Brown). All of the servers and bartenders are always friendly- Mike the Manager, Andrei, Rick, Michel (with the ponytail) are all great at what they do. Overall, the atmosphere is very cozy and pleasant.
