I had the absolute worst retail experience in my life at the East Rutherford Lowes. Went in to do a propane exchange and purchase a few other items. The line at the register was very long. Half the registers were closed. No one had the insight to open the closed registers. After I had waited in line to pay, I was told that I could not have the propane tank in the store. Rather than helping, the cashier made me lose my place in line to take the propane outside. When I came in, she refused to help me. She made me wait in the long line again, taking care of everyone else and completely ignoring me. I finally had to get a manager to help me due to her rudeness. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars in that store. I have purchased wood floors for my entire house, window treatments for every window in my house twice, countless gas grills, garden supplies, misc home supplies. However, this visit has made me a Home Depot customer going forward. Retail stores wonder why people have turned to Amazon. When you make the in-store experience as miserable as what I encountered today, you only have yourself to blame. Just about everything I've ever purchased is available on Amazon. Visited Lowe's of Rutherford for a plastic runner in my hallway to cover a very nice zebra print runner. My little furry kids, love the feel of my carpet runner. Don't want the dogs having accidents on my rug. Stopped by the store to buy a plastic cover for my runner. Adem assisted me in flooring. Cannot thank Adem enough for his excellent service. Adem is lovely! At checkout, the guy that assists customers checking out, believe his name is Frank, another awesome human. The service, selection, and value made for a great experience. I love doing business with this store. It is professional, clean, well-stocked, organized, and they come through on their promises. Recently went in for flooring and doors for my home. Adam and Cloyd in the flooring department were an absolute class act. They got me what I needed and it was delivered EARLY! To top it off, they were genuinely nice guys who treated me kindly. Doors also arrived exactly as promised and in perfect condition. The delivery guys were wonderful, on time, professional, and took great care of my items in transit. This Lowe's was a rough experience. The paint department was 'okay', it was messy and hard to find supplies. Prices were high for the low quality of the items. The checkout was a nightmare. Susan, an employee manning the self-checkout, could not give clear instructions at all. She would tell you to press something, then get an attitude that you pressed it. She would tell you to scan something, then get mad you scanned it. I told her I didn't know what she wanted me to do, since the instructions she gave were wrong and it was annoying that she was speaking to me in a disrespectful way. Just minutes from my house when something goes wrong. And every homeowner out there will surely agree - something is always going wrong. (I definitely miss the carefree days of being a renter and having the landlord handle any and all problems that might arise.) My issues with this Lowe's include: ...the antiquated "Blue Laws", so they're closed on Sundays. (Then I need to schlep up to Clifton and hit the Home Depot.) ...they seem to love moving around items just to irk customers. Lightbulbs were perfectly fine in Aisle 1 for years but now you needed to scoot them over to Aisle 5?! Boo! ...there seems to be an endless amount of workers all over the store but 85% of them have mastered the "never make eye contact or talk to the customers" - so they're just milling around and talking amongst themselves for most of their shift. ...that key-cutting kiosk-machine is useless. (Have an actual human kick it old-school with one of those sturdy 'key duplicator' devices.) ...self-checkout lanes. Only one accepts cash (?!) and the others are on the fritz (?!) and you'd rather just find an actual human working a register but she's all the way down yonder and everyone in her line has well over 50 oversized items at least. I ordered a toilet online from lowes and set up installation through them as well. I had the toilet delivered to my home so it would be here for the installer hoping things would go smoothly. When the installer came and opened the toilet he found that it was broken. He called lowes and told them and then left my home. I called lowes multiple times trying to find out how I could get the toilet returned or exchanged. Each call I placed resulted in me having to wait for a call back because they were so busy. Everyone I spoke with said someone would be calling me to coordinate a return but that never happened. I asked Frank for assistance and his response was it's going to be a while. Unprofessional and rude his response should've been just a minute but instead he continued with the customer like the customer was on a regular checkout line each customer being individually checked out by the intent. Couldn't reach any one of them by phone, so I had no choice but to drive there. I was looking for a very specific chair that's on Lowes' website but only available in store. No one knew anything and they looked befuddled when I asked about the chair (I asked 3 different people & each looked more clueless than the last). Our door lock which has served us well for many years has been sticking. After a while you get tired of giggling and it was time for replacement. So we ran into Lowe's and what a pleasure it was to deal with a seasoned gentleman in the hardware area. We were able to find exactly what we needed and get a bunch of extra keys made. Too often you end up hunting down a young kid who often has no clue. The reason why only 4 stars is because I was also looking for a lamp and I got tired of waiting for someone to help me in that department. He canceled her keys that were being made at the key center on his own while she went to get change from customer service to pay for the keys. Employees always willing to help. I'm here probably once a week getting something for the house or looking for discounts on an appliance or just looking around to keep up to date on what they do got so I know where to go when the need arises. There's always someone walking around that you can ask for help. We got our washer and dryer machine here and we're very happy with the customer service. The staff member (feel bad as I forgot his name) was very knowledgable and took his time explaining the differences with the machines, brands, price range. You can apply for their credit card and receive a 10% discount on your total purchase or if you spend a minimal of $200, you can get 18 months free finance so if you plan on buying a big appliance like washer/dryer, you should consider applying for cc. Please, for the love of everything that is holy, do NOT order online and have anything delivered by truck from Lowe's. This is my second experience ordering something to be delivered by truck (big items, lumber, etc.), and it turning out to be a GIANT disaster. They farm out groups of items to different stores, all with different delivery times. You'll get calls the day before coming delivery windows, and that morning, confirmation for your delivery that day, and then EVERY. TIME. I get a call from the store an hour into the window saying "yeah we don't have any of those" and then they cancel the order. Both times have been a nightmare, and I've ended up just renting a UHaul and shopping and Home Depot. I placed an order online over ten days ago and received numerous notifications via email and text it was going to be delivered via truck today. Nothing was delivered. This store is a joke !! Always a issue !!! I spent between $10,000 - $12,000 dollars over the past few years at this store on my home improvements. Today I picked up a few painting supplies. Of course no one in the paint department. I just needed a few paint sticks to mix the paint I picked up last week. Here comes Mister happy in the paint department. I ask for a stick he looks at my cart and says you have no paint. No shit genius !! I bought it last week. He says ok and give me one paint stick. I said are you kidding ! I thought this was the best Lowe's I've been to in a really long time I remember I was in there a few months ago and had an issue with a stainless steel refrigerator but they accommodated me and my needs today I was in there for packing supplies because I'm moving and the girl that checked me out was very helpful and I was able to find employees throughout the store organizing and fixing things and helping people it was noticeable that they were attentive I don't know the girls name that checked me out she was Hispanic with really long curly dark hair very friendly thin. She was very sweet. And then the guy that checked me out a very tall gentleman checked my receipt to make sure that I have had purchased everything and paid for it to check off my receipt real quick he was nice and made short talk with me After I went across the way to have a quick lunch I spoke to my husband and I told him that I had bought him a new drill because he could not find his. He told me that he had found it a couple of days ago to return the drill that I had just purchased for $160. So I got into my car and I went back with the drill on opened with the receipt It was a very friendly Hispanic guy with glasses on that help me in returns and he seemed a little too happy for me but talked through it and said it was not a problem and it went right back onto my Lowe's credit card he thanked me and told me have a good day. No big-box hardware store can get five stars, fairly. There's too much specialization in each aspect of home ownership (plumbing, electricity, roofing, etc) for any one place to cover all in serious depth. Having explained why it's not five stars, let me now tell you why no other place can get four stars... The selection of tools, parts, and specialty items at Lowe's surpasses Home Depot. A good barometer is plumbing supplies: Lowe's carries the parts right near the supplies right near the pipes. There is no aisle confusion at Lowe's, and there are no unexpected shortages of needed parts. Home Depot restocking is pitiable and usually leads to gross frustration when you can't find what you need. Customer service at Lowe's is much better. It's friendly, for one thing, and efficient, which tends to be rare. The line moves quickly -- usually a ten-person line might have you groaning, but in ten minutes you're in front of someone helping you. Nice. The staff seems more helpful. I'm actively comparing this Lowe's to the Home Depots within 15 miles of the place, and no Home Depot has impressed me with personnel at any level, cashiers, stockers, counters, no one. In Lowe's you don't exactly get personal shoppers but you get efficient help. I actually enjoy going to Lowe's... Like the other reviewer here (Monique C.) I had a horrifying experience with this Lowes and the contractor they employ to do bathroom construction. Vinny Tabano or Vinnie Tabano never finished the job. If I called to ask when he was coming to finish he said I was a pain the ass. I have written proof that the sales installation manager knew he never finished the job. I alerted the store manager Gregg who didn't seem to GAF. I called Corporate and they don't seem to fully grasp the magnitude of the issue or how many other clients are affected by this contractor. I can't say enough about the wonderful experience I've had with Lowe's in East Rutherford - Kitchen & Bathroom Design Department. Our designer was a pleasure to work with and a very talented designed. He was patient, suggested solutions for our tricky little space, and left us feeling like we had a friend on which we could rely. And let me just add to that, we were not easy customers. I highly recommend checking out Lowe's for your cabinets. After searching the Home Depot, and a million discount cabinet places on Rt. 10 and Rt. 46, our kitchen designer, who had over 10 years of experience, explained all of the subtle differences of the several cabinet lines that they carry. don't buy anything from them that needs to be installed - they are SO disorganized!!!!! We had so many issues with our floors I can't even tell you. They would never call us back or call us period. We had to manage them and constantly call and follow up. Wound up having to get our own people to install the floors because they wanted to charge an extra $1k that we were told about the day of installation because of an issue we specifically asked about before signing the contract. This is not a review for this particular Lowes but the rather the bank Lowes uses for it's interest free credit customers. If you choose this option and open a Lowes credit card, your account automatically gets bounced to a "Synchrony Bank" for these interest free purchases (Many other businesses use Synchrony as well). Here's my story: The following letter was sent to NJ Senator Menendez. Unfortunately he's currently under indictment for a host of illegal activities so I am not expecting a response. I will be sending it to the NJ attorney general though. Lowes and Synchrony Bank deceptive business practice: Lowes, and several other businesses, offers either 5% off OR 6, or 12 months of interest free on purchases made with a Lowes credit card. However, when one makes several purchases and begins making their monthly payments, even if you pay a lot more than the minimum payment, only a portion gets applied to the first purchase (unbeknownst to the paying customer). This makes it difficult, if not impossible to pay off the items in the order in which they were purchased; this will result in the 24.99% interest rate (being applied daily and compounded) to the entire amount of the original purchase, not just on what's owed. Most people making their monthly payments probably assume their payments will be automatically applied to their earliest purchase, only to be surprised by an outrageous amount of interest after the 6 months have expired. I made a call to Synchrony Bank months ago (who handles this agreement for Lowe's) and was given conflicting information. One representative said she "could set it up so all payments are applied to purchases in chronological order." So of course I opted for that. Why is this not automatic? This, I discovered did not happen because my last 3 payments of $400 was clearly not applied to my first purchase on 10/1/2014. So I called again. Same conflicting information. Same story. **It should be noted: nowhere on the paper bills or online does it say the customer must call Synchrony Bank to have payments applied to the earliest purchases. I did receive a letter after all this explaining that I can go to a their online billing and set it up so each payment gets applied to the earliest purchase. This is a clearly deceptive practice because both Lowes and Synchrony Bank fail to inform the customer of all the information they need to avoid paying the high compounded daily interest of 24.99% at the time of purchase. To make it worse, they punish the customers that pay even more than the minimum monthly payment by applying an amount they decide upon to the original purchase.
