The Lucca Grill was the first pizza I tasted as a child. It was the first pizza my father had as a boy as well. It has set the standard for high-quality mom-pop pizza for generations of townies in Bloomington/Normal. Their trademark thin crust pizza is amazing out of the oven and I really enjoy it delivered straight to me whilst sitting with a friend at the bar. The ala Baldini is my go-to but I my wife is a pepperoni only gal. Lucca is constantly busy for a reason l, the pizza is amazing. Purchased four large pizza's. Opened the sausage pizza and it looked like they were rationing sausage. Multiple slices had no sausage and not a single piece had two and even those with one had one piece of sausage split between the slices. I called them to let them know I felt it was less then a good product. I spoke with John the manager. He informed that the man working their pizza oven at the time is their best pizza chef and that is the way they make their pizzas. I offered to share the picture to help confirm it was in his opinion a good pizza. He declined and had no interest in my feedback. If your hungry I would consider eating elsewhere. read more

I have been a customer for at least 20 years. Ordered 2 pizzas as takeout (ok I know it's not the same as eating them there). Anyway both pizzas were burnt and were quite unflavorful. I ordered extra sauce on the cheese pizza but it was dried as a bone. For over $40 for 2 pizzas I think I will refrain from reordering anything more. read more

Arrived at Lucca with my wife, daughter and 1 year old son. Went in and asked if they had a table not realizing that one needed a reservation. When asked if they had an open table they were very accommodating and offered us a reserved table since the party wouldn't be in until 7pm, it was 5:45(ish). Being that we had a stroller and an infant they asked us if we wanted to sit at the front or back, offered us a high chair and were very kind and considerate, all considering we didn't have a reservation. The food was brought out in a very timely efficient manner as our son was getting hangry. The food was hot and absolutely delicious. From the sheer number of reviews here you can already tell that it's a place you should check out. Most people I know LOVE Lucca's. Personally, I think the pizza is okay. The best part about Lucca's is the atmosphere. It's corner location, dim lighting, old decorations and bar give it a city feel, which is rare in this town. On busy nights they will open up the upstairs. This is also where they'll put you if you have a big group. Unfortunately, the ambiance on the second floor is complete 180 from the main floor. When you're on the second floor it feels like you should be celebrating a six-year-old's birthday party. For that reason, I would recommend going here with a group of four or fewer on busy nights and eight or fewer on slow nights. If you're just visiting, this may also be a nice place to grab a beer and not feel creepy. It's a relaxed vibe is what I'm trying to say. read more

Lucca's friendly servers gave us just the right amount of attention that we wanted. It looks like they have a great selection of beers on tap although I was in the mood the night we visited for an "old standby". As others mentioned, the crust is quite thin, but I wanted to mention that it had a delicious and delicate buttery taste. I feel that there is room in the pizza world for some crust diversity, and I enjoyed Lucca's change of pace crust. I also agree with the previous comment that the pizza we ordered was quite light on toppings except that the "half" we ordered with sausage had the amount that we expected. I felt it was a fun experience in what appears to be a hockey/sports theme bar in the arts area of downtown Bloomington. If I lived closer, I'd probably be a regular. read more

Lucca is the coziest bar/restaurant in Bloomington-Normal. The prices can be a little bit steep, but the pizza is seriously delicious. I would avoid the spaghetti marinara, it's more like chopped tomatoes on top of noodles (the sauce does not stick to the pasta). For this reason, I asked for a side of sauce and while I was putting red pepper flakes on my pasta, the top popped off, leaving my food under a mountain of red pepper flakes. I wasn't able to salvage the food, but they still charged me for the uneaten pasta and the untouched extra sauce. Oh well, now I know to just not order that in the future. I also steer clear of the "side salad" because it's just bagged lettuce in a tiny bowl for about $3.25. Thankfully, everyone that works there is friendly. Cool spot. Sat upstairs on a busy weeknight. The pie was above decent. Not great but solid. The twist here is the service. It's AWFUL-atleast the server we had. Slow, she didn't know what beers they had and she seemed supremely overwhelmed. If she waits on you, RUN! She has multiple facial piercings. Or, ask for someone else to help you. And don't get the toasted ravioli. Two people in our party ordered it and they were undercooked. They were taken off the bill but receiving our check took another 30 minutes after we had finished. I'm not really sure how this place came to be the highest rated pizza place in Bloomington. The pizza was really thin, but was too crispy and not at all chewy like good pizza is supposed to be. The crust was almost cracker like. We were sat upstairs next to a massive HVAC unit. Why they seat people upstairs at all is beyond me. It really has a old house attic feel that didn't have any ambiance. Obviously this place is very popular with the locals, based on how packed it was, but I couldn't find any redeeming qualities to come back here. Cracker thin crust, top notch cheese, and tangy sauce make this one of the best pizzas in Bloomington/Normal. They also have a good selection of craft beers to pair with the pizza, and for me there's nothing like a great pizza with a Bavarian Hefe-Weizen to wash it down. Really this location is more like a bar than a restaurant, so I'm not so sure how friendly it would be with children. Nice downtown location too. read more

I am biased because I became a regular here, about three pizzas a week, but every single time the pizza comes out amazing. True thin crust pizza with not too much sauce, but also not too little. I would stick to two meats or less to get as much flavor as possible as more toppings will just overpower the thin crust. It's a local place that has a lot of history here. Over the years, I've enjoyed their pizza, including the a la Baldini, but the last few times we've been there, haven't been great. I'm not sure if they changed anything with the pizza, but the crust has been overdone and is sort of burnt-crispy with fewer toppings than usual. My kids ordered the mozzarella sticks the other night and it costs about $8 for 6 sticks. We left disappointed and felt like we spent way too much for what we got. Since we don't usually remember to make reservations, we usually get seated upstairs. As others have mentioned, the atmosphere up there is lacking, and recently I've noticed the floor up there doesn't seem level and seems to be sinking in parts. I really want it to be good based on previous experiences over the last 10 years, but the last few times we've been in there it hasn't been all that great. read more
