Four words: Midgets in chicken outfits. It's a truly unique LA experience. The crowd is fun and energetic, albeit mostly westsiders and not Mexican. Most people probably find that more comfortable. Think Nacho Libre in real life. Booze is cheap and the nose bleed seats are more fun than the more expensive ringside seats. Just get there a little early. There is some nudity. read more

As much fun as you can have in LA, tied only with the Playboy Jazz Festival as the single best regularly scheduled event. I've been many times and am about to go on Halloween weekend which I'm sure will amp it up to six stars. Not for people who don't drink or who are easily offended! read more

With three different dance floors and a kitchsy Mayan aesthetic The Mayan is part LA slick and part middle brow suburban dancehall. It's fun if you are not too self-conscious and I like the downtown location. read more

took my boyfriend there for valentine's day..best valentine's present i could have given him..before the matches even started, i knew it was gonna be an awesome night..they played an old luchador movie that involved a singer who had a WIG that was evil, made her faint, hopped off her head, and a luchador had to fight it to save the day..the battle between the los crazy chickens and the burly dudes was amazing..their theme music and insane "dance" moves made me laugh so hard i was crying..the pogo stick male stripper was unreal, glitter everywhere and pogo skills like ive never seen..the gorgeous lucy fur with her fans and lola la cerzeza's matador dance were incredible burlesque routines..so hot! top it off with swigging some corona from cans, eating cheap snacks provided by a surly old man, and you have yourself an amazing evening.. read more

The PERFECT date night for those of you who avoid Hallmark Card sentimentality and gooshi-ness. So funny--the Mayan is the perfect venue, and there's just the right blend of Sexo & (Comic) Violencia to keep the night moving and fun. The Luchadores are just as hot as the Burlesque dancers, so plenty of T & A for all. Also, Carolina (formerly of 40 Deuce) is featured in a very creative tango with a male partner. First time I've seen dancers undress each other in a performance. Only reason the event gets 4 stars is the dismal toilet situation for women at the Mayan---far too few, and the ones that were available were reallllly dirty. Felt Ripped Off. We went for my bday and got stuck behind a bunch of meat heads smoking cigarettes indoors and being general asses and so we 1.) Couldn't see anything and 2.) Spent most of the time trying not to be harassed. The show might have been fun but I wouldn't know because I only saw tiny slivers through people's shoulders. They shouldn't overbook the events soo much. We paid 30 bucks to look at the back of a bunch of heads. I was really disappointed and we ended up only staying for about 30 minutes before everyone wanted to leave. read more

Think Mexican Wrestling with the full masks and costume, burlesque show, and a pair of comedians. Worth the price of admission, worth going to see it to belies it. A fun, interactive show. Lucha VAVOOM puts the VAVOOM back in entertainment!

The best way I can describe this event is as a live-action acid trip--and I mean that in the best possible way. Easily one of the craziest shows I've ever seen. Lucha VaVOOM is a potent mix of strip tease, comedy, Mexican wrestling, and all around spectacle. I don't want to give away too many details, because a lot of the show plays on surprises and such, but I thought the best part of the show was the opening burlesque number, which I thought should have been the show stopper. Aside from that, though, Lucha is wall-to-wall entertainment. Like others have said, I don't know that I'd want to go to Lucha every weekend, but to experience it at least once is a must for anyone who wants to see one helluva wild show. I'll close by saying this to drive home my point: Lucha featured what was easily the craziest tranny-unicorn-hula-hoop dance--which we all know are a dime a dozen these days--I've ever seen. Two words. = Dirty Sanchez. This was so awesome. Something else to do outside of the usual "Let's get a drink" scenerio, my face was hurting with laughter, especially with theguys dressed like chickens with that absurd song playing in the ackground. It was entertaining, I felt like I was watching Nacho Libre in person with burlesque show for extra points. It was held at the Mayan which is a really cool venue in Downtown by my old place. Less comedic commentary would have been good but overall, good times. read more

I'm not a huge fan, and in likelihood, I will not go back. But, if you're looking for something unique and are willing to cheer and boo, you'll have a good time; it probably helps too if you go all out and dress up a bit to get in your own character. Four rounds of mediocre Mexican entertainment wrestling fought by a mix of black, white, midget and possibly authentically Mexican men (and ladies at the end) in very slow maneuvers... If the moves were done a bit faster and seamless, it would have been a bit more interesting. I still respect the choreography of throwing yourself around and at one another without hurting yourself or others, but I guess I would appreciate the lack of time spent in between that felt like a concert where the band takes time to discuss which song to play next between songs. Just go already!! The tempo is still slow despite Spongebob and his co-announcer making very trying, educated, but poor jokes. Maybe they all need to go to an auction, or maybe I need a chill-pill. Either way, I didn't mean to go to the Deep South that night, but damn things were slow. The burlesque was actually a bit more interesting, although they definitely save the best for last. It's not dirty (except for the last), but rather more like what most straight boys might hope their girlfriend would do for them--dance, and slowly take off their clothing down to thongs and pasties. Well, boyfriends probably want the full package, just like the crowds here, but that's what you get: just a tease. The last girl was almost all naked, but was wearing transparent underclothes... The venue was interesting, though as they say, if you want a seat on the lower level, go early--it's kind of like a show at the House of Blues. Upstairs, they have a sort of bench seating situation. You can likely sit there, but keep in mind you are looking down on the stage now and from a further distance and in a much warmer area of the venue. It was fine, I guess, and actually made for fewer obstacles of people's heads when taking pictures, but you are closer downstairs and it feels a bit more cheerier and booier down there too. In intermission, don't hesitate to take your picture with the different characters of the show that are now roaming the corridors. Again, go once. No need to splurge on ring seats unless you enjoy crappy plastic chairs close to the action and the probability of getting up and down when the wrestlers throw themselves out of the ring towards you. read more

Lucha: VAVOOM! Where do I even begin? Lucha VaVOOM is a blend of hilarious lucha libre, burlesque dancing, and short comedy skits. Let's start with the meh: -It's not cheap. You're looking to spend at least a hundred bucks at least (if you're on a date anyway.) Their ticket prices might vary, but for their most recent Valentine's Day show I spent 120 on tickets, 50 each +charges. Parking is another ten bucks, and then there's alcohol. Their drinks are overpriced, my girlfriend spent 30 bucks on three drinks. -The comedy is pretty lame, but chances are you'll be drunk so who cares, right? -Worst part, there is only one bathroom so if you have IBS don't even bother coming. The only venue where the guy's line is longer than the girl's line. Now for the awesome: - The atmosphere of this place is just awesome. You're in something reminiscent of an Indiana Jones temple, everyone is drunk, they're playing awesome Mexican music, and b-movies where luchadores fight huge blobs or demonic wigs. -The girls. Yeah, they're pretty good looking, I guess. A little too much cottage cheese, if ya know what I mean ahahahahahahaha.... -The lucha libre, cabron. Forget that WWE crap you see on UPN, these guys are eccentric as hell and are there to put on a great show. Easily the most interesting personalities I've seen: guys dressed up as chickens, a cross dresser, a guy with a huge bush, and even midgets. There's nothing like seeing a 300 pound guy in a mask do a flip into a crowd of people. You must see this at least once. read more

I went to this show for the first time last night. It was so fun. Some of the Lucha fights were really really hillarious. The burlesque ladies were great as well. I only wish that more of the audience would have realised that Lucha Libre is supposed to be participatory theater. You're supposed to scream your head off, cheer for the good guys and jeer at the bad guys. Most white people are used to being quiet and watching the show, I guess. read more

This event is HILARIOUS. It's great! Outside of the theatre before the show starts, the wrestlers and the "Vavoom" come to the theatre in old fancy cars on the Lucha Vavoom red carpet. It's fun to see how excited people get. There isn't much to do inside the theatre before the show starts other than to get drinks. The first half the show is also much more interesting than the second half. The wrestlers and their names are hilarious. The show goes, one wrestling match, a burlesque show, another wrestling match, a burlesque show, intermission, and repeat. It was great, the burlesque shows were interesting, not fantastic, but interesting. The wrestling was where it was at though. LOVED IT! read more

This is one of the funnest things to do in LA. I had to photograph the show in October and I was impressed, wowed, and deeply in awe. First off the fans are super cool. Everyone gets dressed up and it's a festive atmosphere. The show itself is the bomb!! The in between acts are really neat and the wrestling itself. Hell Yes!! I hate that fake shit wrestling on tv but this stuff is cool as hell. It's awesome to see them fly through the air and into the audience. The stunts are cool. You simply can't go wrong with midget, girl and mexican wrestling. A show from start to finish and rather inexpensive as well. I've gone twice now and I always get excited when the announcement email comes to my inbox. I've gotten my girlfriend hooked and plan on taking many more friends in the future. I had no idea what to expect the first time I went to Lucha VaVoom. A friend im'd me and asked if I wanted to join her and her boyfriend that night for little Mexican wrestling. I'm always up for trying new things. So, I was in like Flynn. I admit the first time I was in shock most of the time. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. But I've gone back 2 more times b/c I just can't get enough. Most recently we decided to upgrade to the ringside no fly zone seats. It amplified the experience 10x. Be aware that it may say No Fly Zone but there are no guarantees. We had some lap action and a flying mini come our way. Luv Tsuki and Casandro! The only thing about these seats: you only see the back of the performers in between matches. Also, if you happen to be lined up outside before the show-they bring the wrestlers to the door in vintage cars and drop them off to walk the carpet. Pretty cool! And they sell candy in the bathroom if you need a snack. Nothing like getting your M&M's in a public bathroom? Then you can wash it down with a canned Heiniken. read more

I really wanted to like this show, but it was just okay for me and my husband, most likely because we weren't totally wasted. We had a pretty good time on the feb 14th valentines show, but our butts did fall asleep on the concrete steps after 3 hours. The hosts were pretty funny, but mostly they were telling some bad jokes, which they even felt were bad, but they yelled Lucha after, so everyone yelled Vavoom so as to make up for the bad jokes. Okay 1st time that's funny, even 2nd, but like by the 5th or 6th time, it gets old fast. It was cool to see Drew Carrey though. We were entertained by some of the acts, and it's something "different," but we won't be going back. I'm not into WWF at all, and never have been, nor am I into slapstick comedy, so that does effect my critique. It is something someone should try if they are looking to do something different without too high of expectations, and you'll have a good time. Definitely drink alcohol of some kind. We walked to Corkbar beforehand for dinner (5 min walk), which was nice, and parked 1/2 block away from the Mayan ($10). read more

I got my hubby and me tickets for Saturday's Cinco de Mayo Show. We Walked in about 8:15(Show Starts at 8) and the music they were playing was some annoying House music! Really? Its 5 De Mayo where is the Mariachi Music!!? O.K. so we got a drink and found a nice spot standing but with a great view. The wrestling was okay, I was expecting much funnier and the Burlesque nothing Special(we see burlesque shows all the time). About 45 minutes into the show I had to use the restroom. The line had to be at least 40 girls!! There was Only 1 bathroom with 4 toilets for a Sold Out show!!! I waited in line for at least 45 minutes and when I was done the Show was Over!!! It was 9:55!!! And once again annoying House music! What a waste of of my time and 100. for a pair of tickets for a show that doesn't even Last 2 Hours!! Oh yeah, on the way out I finally heard the Mariachi Playing right Outside the club. For the second time this year Lucha VaVoom presented the Girlie Girl Catfight Show at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on July 25th. The theme: Sexy 60's Spies! For those of you not familiar with this new underground wrestling revolution; the Girlie Girl Catfight Show is a spinoff of the famed Masked Mexican Wrestling styled show Lucha VaVoom. This new show touts itself as the very first of its kind featuring some sexy ladies wrestling like pros with a burlesque style theme. They have dance fights, contortionists, pole dancers, variety shows, martial arts, strip tease and even a naughty sing-a-long! Don't let your head fall in the gutter, this Girl vs Girl show is not some gross female, mud flinging, porn style knock out, tacky leotard wearing wrestling match. No, no folks, this show is an anything goes good-time! The show was underscored by a fun, kitschy 60's spy theme, even some of the audience members dressed accordingly. Don't let all the kitsch fool you though, these girls are amazing athletes and really put on a stellar performance for their El Rey spectators. The main players of the night included WWE wrestler Shelly Martinez as the surly referee; super power duo Poubelle Twins taking on security guards with blow up dolls; Zepha Zoe's thrilling strip tease; and my favorite; Leigh Acosta performing her jaw dropping pole dance routine. Of course the main event everyone comes to see is the girl vs girl wrestling matches throughout the evening. One highlight was a match between Jujitsu blue belt, Francesca Zappitelli in her catsuit taking on Christie Ricci. That catsuit didn't stay on long, much to the delight of the entire audience and I'm pretty sure no one remembers who won that one. The fight of the evening was Lucy Fur vs Audrey Deluxe vs former G.L.O.W. wrestler, Fire. (yes! The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling!!!!). Awesome! That match was a serious, balls out, drop kickin throw down wrestling fight between some serious pro fighters! Both girls and boys will love this risqué production with its provocative theatrics and thrilling wrestling matches. The Girlie Girl Catfight show is a Los Angeles Nightlife must do!
