Long review alert: I booked a partial ocean view room at Lucia Lodge, room #2. I also ate at the restaurant and stopped by the store.
First things first, Lucia, CA is the Lucia Lodge. There is no other part of town to Lucia. However, the Lodge has accommodations, a restaurant, a little store, and a bathroom. Don't expect anything else in Lucia, other than Lucia Lodge.
My stay in room #2 was okay. It was clean (contrary to previous reviews), comfortable, and cute and did indeed have a view of the ocean. However, I wish I had the money for the full ocean view rooms. Not really so much for the view...but for the lack of being right over a parking lot where you hear everyone else walk around and pull in. Also, in the partial ocean view room, which are newer cabins set up duplex-style, whenever anyone walked or closed a door it shook the floor in my room, which in turn shook my bed feeling like a little earthquake. That was a bit disconcerting when trying to fall asleep. I could also hear the people in the other room. The bathroom door could've used some WD40. But, it was clean, nicely kept up, had wine glasses and a corkscrew, and provided nice toiletries. The older cabins are set apart from each other, not sharing a floor...so you wouldn't have that problem.
The grounds are beautiful. They have flowers all over in a very wild sort of landscaping technique that verges on tropical, but not overly so. The grounds are overlooking a gorgeous little cove with gemlike water, with tables that you can sit at and look at the ocean. There is also a little overlook up behind the older cabins with benches. Bring some wine for a romantic sunset evening, or just a book. Or, if it's during whale watching season, this would be a great place to be!
My experience at the restaurant for dinner was good. It was almost empty, sadly. The ambiance is very cute, sort of crooked and early 1900s with stained glass and an old radio. The costs were somewhat high, but they're also sort of in the middle of nowhere, so shipping costs for food are probably higher. I had a salad, the bread, a glass of wine, and the mushroom risotto.
*The house salad was fantastic...fresh and huge, with goat cheese with dill and walnuts. It was not over or underdressed.
*The bread was also fantastic, I'm not sure where they got it! So chewy and tasty.
*The mushroom risotto was a bit of a let down. It wasn't quite a risotto. It was more like a rice porridge made with too long of grain of rice, with no cheese in it. The mushroom, broccoli, and corn sautee on top was fantastic, but the porridge of the risotto kinda took away from it. It came with a parmesan crisp, which was good for a bit, but part of it was burnt to where it was bitter. I wish I hadn't been vegetarian so I could've gotten the fish or steak...because everything else other than the rice of the risotto was cooked well.
*The wine I had was the Votre Sante Pinot Noir. It was a very nice choice, very light and not too tannic. $9 a glass, perhaps a bit on the high side, but I though it was worth it for a nice pairing.
I'd really recommend their salads and bread. The server was also very nice. She even boxed up my leftovers and wrapped them in plastic wrap so that the boxes wouldn't get soaked in my cooler. She took very good care of me, and I appreciate it very much.
I also ate at the restaurant for the continental breakfast that was included with my reservation. This was very good for a continental breakfast! They had:
fresh bread, pastries galore (coffee cake, danishes, muffins, and more), bagels, fruit salad, yogurt, apple juice & OJ, hard boiled eggs, coffee/tea. You can sit on the patio if it's nice out and watch the ocean while you eat your breakfast. Hard to beat.
The staff were very nice and helpful. They recommended homemade cookies in the store and told me about a spot to watch the sunset. I think you could probably get good advice about places to visit from them as well. Limekiln SP was mentioned as a nice place to visit nearby, but I didn't have time to go there unfortunately. The little store also has the general sort of goods you'd need. Bottled water is a bit pricey. Water from the tap at Lucia Lodge actually tastes pretty good, though! They also sell beer, wine, snacks, sunblock, trinkets, postcards, etc.
TL;DR: The folks here are nice and the view is gorgeous. Give the restaurant a shot, at least for a snack and some wine and the view. If you stay here and you have the money, try to stay in the older full ocean view rooms. If you're not too sensitive to slightly moving floors and noise (maybe I'm just ultra sensitive), then the partial ocean view or mountain view rooms are still very clean and nice looking...and affordable in comparison to other non-camping lodging in Big Sur. Don't expect cell service or an alarm clock, but they do have satellite wifi (with some restrictions). read more
