My husband and I just had a wonderful stay at The Jabberwock Inn. From the food, to the innkeepers, to the decor, to the location (close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium)--everything was perfect. It's obvious that a lot of thought went into the inn. Our room (Brillig) had a beautiful view. We also really appreciated he appetizers, and the cookies that were available 24/7, The breakfasts alternated between sweet and savory, and were all delicious. We highly recommend The Jabberwock!

Just recently stayed here for a trip to explore the Big Sur area. It was great! Loved the different breakfasts each day and different apps in the evening! Rick and Suzanne were very accommodating to whatever you needed. The place was very cute and cool! Definitely going to miss it, spending time in the sun room is the absolute best! We stayed in the Tum Tum Tree room and absolutely loved it. It was separate from the house so it felt like your own spot all while being next to everything!

3.5 Stars. Dorothy was an angel during my visit! The service she provided and caring attention to detail is not something you find in a larger hotel. She anticipated my needs and communicated with me daily to make sure I was ok. I would return in a heartbeat for that service. During my stay the owners were away on holiday I believe, and Dorothy was there all day until late at night but she never wavered or showed signs of fizzing out. She was relentlessly helpful from morning until night. I don't know how much she is being paid but this lady needs a raise and a bonus! Thank you Dorothy for making my stay a good one. This Victorian inn has 8 rooms I believe and I opted for the charming Borogove Room which is substantially larger than the other rooms with a separate seating area, fireplace, jacuzzi tub, and is more than $100 more per night but it was worth every cent and met my gotta-get-away-for-peace-and-quiet needs. There was plenty of hot water for showers. There were nice extras like sodas, juice, bottled water, a variety of teas, cookies, etc., included at no extra cost. At check-in my lovely room smelled like an old folks home with stale and musky odors of old furnishings and textiles compounded by windows that were never opened. It took 2 days, Lysol spray/wipes, citrus orange air freshener, and windows left open to combat the odor. The sheets had crumbs and weren't tightly tucked. However after notifying Dorothy housekeeping arrived within an hour to make the bed with fresh linens. The 2 dining room chairs in the room creak badly, are uncomfortable, and need replacing. As is the case with some Victorian homes the hardwood floors creak, the bedroom armoire door and drawer don't close easily or without noise, and there are no screens on the windows. So I battled a couple mosquitos but none of these were deal breakers. I would stay again especially for the service Dorothy provided. Wine and hors d'oeuvres hour is 5-6 pm daily. There was always a red and white wine available. I liked the light-bodied cabernet. The appetizers were varied, generous, and tasty - I especially liked the artichoke dips and smoked Gouda. Breakfast was kind of hit and miss. The egg dishes as explained to me were mixed with half and half milk. Reminded me of powdered eggs or a liquid egg substitute so I couldn't eat them but the pastries, crepes, and sausage were pretty good. I booked a massage with Ann at the time of my reservation. She goes to the hotel to provide massages for guests. Overall I would give her service a 2 out of 5. The massage itself was mediocre, and I was glad when it was over. She she was 25 minutes late! I was told she would arrive at my room 10 minutes prior to the confirmed appointment time to set up, etc. Not only did she not arrive early but she arrived about 15 minutes after my massage should have started. She walked in and told me to "sit over there while I (she) set up." No explanation or apology for being late! After I asked if she knew what time the Inn told guests to expect her she said yes, 10 minutes before the appointment time. She then said she apologized for being late. I'm thinking nooo you didn't but ok. Ann brought a massage table, a bright yellow fitted sheet, a charcoal gray flat sheet, and a blue blanket all stuffed inside the massage table carrying case. The sheets and blanket were balled up when she took them out of the bag. They were wrinkled so badly I was appalled, and they smelled of old cigarettes. Yuck! Then she took a pillow case off one of my bed pillows to cover the headrest on her massage table. That is what I laid my face on. I was turned off but really needed a massage, and I had prepaid the Inn for her services. After the massage she again balled up the sheets and blanket, and stuffed them back into the bag! In hind sight I should have just forfeited the $145 and sent her packing when she arrived that late. Sorry I can't recommend her at this time. Street parking is available right out front but there is a parking lot with a steep driveway. There are 3 floors but no elevator so the upstairs bedrooms are not wheelchair accessible. I don't know if there are any bedrooms on the 1st floor.

The hype is real. This place is A+-accommodations, service, amenities, and the breakfast/wine and hors d'oeuvre hour were something to look forward to each day. Recommend = yes Return = should another opportunity arises, yes. Kudos to Jabberwock Inn!

I thought I'd done a pretty exhaustive search of hotel and B&B options in Monterey this past weekend and right before booking a room at a hotel on Cannery Row, I came across the Jabberwock Inn and decided to book it instead. I received an email about a week or so confirming the details of our visit and checking for any food allergies or restrictions which was nice and a sign to come of how thoughtful Rick, Suzanne and their team are. My bf and I arrived a few hours before check-in (3pm) with the intention of just dropping off our bags and grabbing lunch, but Suzanne welcomed us and said our room was ready, so we got the tour and were able to settle in to our room before heading out. As others have said, the house is simply charming. It was still decorated for Christmas and it made the first night in the torrential downpour feel all the more warm and cozy. We were at the house for both breakfasts and happy hours and everything was so delicious. They alternate between a sweet and savory breakfast each morning, the wine at happy hour was tasty, and the appetizer plates were a treat. We interacted the most with Dorothy during our stay and she was a phenom - so friendly and helpful and it was just nice to know she was there if we needed something. My only regret of our stay is that it rained so we weren't able to enjoy the gardens or bocce ball court, but the abundance of windows made for great viewing (both when we could and couldn't see the ocean). I can't wait to return.

Breakfasts, egg and sausage frittata and their to die for homemade juice mix!

What a gem of a place! We stayed in the Borogove Master room for a few nights on my ladies bday weekend. The location and view will not disappoint. My girlfriend is vegetarian and they really did an amazing job accommodating with delicious and thoughtful vegan dishes! The snacks, drinks...everything..top notch!

Hors d'oeuvre & wine on Friday night

We have fallen in love with the Jabberwock Inn. Rick & Dorothy are the hosts. They were so accommodating & kind. We were trying to make it for hors d'oeuvre & wine on Friday (5-6p). We ran into some traffic, so Dorothy placed it all in our room for us to enjoy when we arrived. All of the food was amazing. The care & attention that is provided is over-the-top the best! And to top it all off, we were visited by several black-tailed deer. The main space is a great space to sit & relax. We truly enjoyed our stay.

Croissant bread pudding with a berry compost and vanilla sauce. Breakfast chicken sausage. Coffee and the amazing house made Jabberjuice.

I was torn about whether to stay in Carmel by the Sea or Monterey so when I did a google search for hotels and saw this one had great reviews I picked it. I was on day 9 of my trip, was exhausted and flying back to New York the next day so I really just wanted a quality, safe, clean, nice hotel to end my trip and that didn't happen. The hotel is massive, it gave me real old school, resort vibes. Enormous lobby with televisions, dark wood chairs, giant bar and restaurant but it was horribly outdated. I mean, green carpet, I felt like I was back in the 90's. I checked in they could not find my reservation. I had booked on hotel tonight and they asked me what kind of room I booked. I told them one with a view and a manager came out and told me they didn't have any ocean view rooms. It was 10:30 at night, at this point I didn't care I just wanted to go to sleep. Eventually, after waiting at the front desk for a half hour they were able to locate my reservation. In the meantime I had left my luggage with the bell hop. They told me they would bring my suitcase up for me. I asked the guy to take it out of my trunk because I had just had surgery and couldn't do any lifting. Remember that for later. They gave me directions to my room and I couldn't believe the path I had to take to get there. Elevator up to the fourth floor, then I had to walk down an extremely long hallway, down another hall to ANOTHER elevator. Then I was to take that elevator DOWN a floor to get to my room. It felt like a joke. It was so unbelievably inconvenient. Throughout my journey to my room I noticed all of the windows in the hallway were cracked open. I realized quickly this was to air out the moldy musky smell of the hotel that desperately needed renovating. The carpet was filthy. My hotel room was so bleh. So outdated, the bed was so high I had to jump out of it my feet didn't touch the ground and I'm 5'8. The furniture was old, the carpet, I wouldn't take my socks off. I set up the luggage rack right in the front of the room so that when the bellhop brought my luggage up he could rest it on there for me since I made it clear I couldn't lift. I saw two bugs when I pulled down the comforter and at that point I was done. I went down to the front desk and told them about the bugs and that I wanted a new room. They couldn't help me. Completely ignored my request so I called the booking agency to tell them what was going on. I went back up to my room and saw my luggage in my room, horizontal on the floor despite the luggage rack being open and set up, right, next to it. Cool. I had to call someone up just to lift my luggage onto the rack because again, couldn't lift, post-surgical, made that clear. Whatever. Long story short by this time it was 11:30 pm I just wanted to sleep so I did that and left first thing in the morning. This hotel has absolutely no business charging the rates that they do. None. I would not stay here again.

Hotel staff were very friendly and professional. This time we had the oceanfront room with the sofa bed. Beautiful views, of course, from the balcony. The room was clean, however there is an ant problem in the bathroom. It was not too bad, but we still weren't thrilled to see an ant here and there crawling on our things in the bathroom. It is strange that they use cloth shower curtains, so every time you take a shower they get soaked. Some toiletries are provided, but not as many as they used to. They used to give lotion, shower caps, shower gel, etc. Now it's just bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom is nice, though, with double sinks. Sofa bed worked out great for our 8 year old. She said it was comfortable, and we were also comfortable in the king size bed, which had a firm mattress. It can get noisy in the room with the balcony door open due to the seals and seagulls, but closing the door blocks most of the sound. We kept it open in the day and shut it when we went to bed. Breakfast - well, I guess you can't really complain too much when it's complimentary with the room, but it's really nothing to write home about. Hard boiled eggs, fruit plate, yogurt, and some muffins. Me, being a diabetic, I couldn't really eat any of it, except the eggs. Our daughter enjoyed it, though she is pretty easygoing. We had been hoping to save some money by eating breakfast at the hotel but we ended up eating breakfast out every day we were there. Be prepared to do A LOT of walking because this hotel is at the very end of Cannery Row -- although it's great exercise, and gave us a chance to work off all the calories from our meals. lol. The room was nice, we'd probably stay there again. One thing we were disappointed about was the hotel used to offer a discount if you bought aquarium tickets through them. They no longer do that. They also used to offer free bottled water in the room, which they also no longer do.

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back!…read moreThe staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. When we decided to extend our stay by an extra night, our harbor-view room wasn't available for the additional night, but they went out of their way to make it work so we didn't have to switch rooms. We really appreciated that! Parking was also very reasonably priced at $25, especially compared to other hotels in the area. The room itself was spacious, the bed was very comfortable (firm, just how we like it), and the harbor view was absolutely perfect. We were a little concerned after reading reviews about the sea lions being noisy, but we actually loved hearing them from the balcony! Once the balcony door was closed, we couldn't hear them at all, and they never disturbed our sleep. One of our favorite perks was the complimentary binoculars available to guests--they were a fun touch for watching the harbor. And don't miss the sunrise from the fourth-floor rooftop terrace--it's absolutely beautiful! There were just a few minor things that could be improved. The hotel only has one elevator, and it can be quite slow during busy times. We also wish the freshly baked cookies were available throughout the day. They were put out around 3:00 p.m., but they disappeared almost immediately because they were so popular. When we arrived, our room temperature was around 78°F. We called the front desk to ask about the A/C and were told someone would come up. Security arrived and explained that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning, so the options are to use the fan or open the balcony door. It would have been helpful if the front desk had shared that information when we called. We left the screened balcony door open while we were out the next day, and the room cooled down nicely. The only other thing we wished the room had was a microwave. Overall, these were very minor issues compared to everything we loved about our stay. The location, views, comfortable rooms, and outstanding customer service made for a wonderful experience.
