We are finishing our Cabrillo highway adventure with a stop in Monterey. I made reservations to stay at the Seven Gables, it's been years that I've passed by thinking "that looks like a cool place to stay". So with Valentines in mind...check in at 4 but they sent a text saying our room was ready at 11 or so and asked what time might we expect you? My timing was four and that's about when we arrived. It's a bit complicated but the signage was clear and there were a couple of parking spaces right by the check in office. Wow what a place Old Victorian and absolutely beautiful inside. Check in was easy and fun, we could keep our car where it was parked. There were small socializing events, a champagne pour at 5, cookies at 7...Our room was just off the parking area with no stairs to climb. We were also close to the breakfast spot. (starts at 8-10) Our room was well a large bedroom, tall queen size bed, a very large bathroom, with a Great shower (water pressure) and rainfall shower head. Three large windows gave us a good view of the bay, the window shades were thick enough to block out most of the light. The mattress was super comfortable, we slept well. We took an Uber to the old pier and had dinner, it was very quiet in town, perfect. Free breakfast always has me wondering but today this was a very nice breakfast, egg soufflé, hash browns, lots of real fresh fruit, croissants, various breads, oatmeal, various topping and cereal. Hit flavorful coffee, juices, yogurts...good stuff. The stay was pricy for the off season but sometimes ya gotta spend a few bucks too enjoy the finer things in life. We first stayed here years ago and had such a lovely experience. We always stay at places during the off season to be able to experience the venue and city when it's quiet. I find that service is usually at its best during those times and this was no exception. The staff was great and so was the property, including its proximity to the water, shopping and dining. I love staying at older hotels and inns because the properties are usually small and quaint, with so much charm and character. I like the limited number of rooms because each is different and unique, providing the opportunity for a one of a kind experience each time you visit. read more

This place was an absolute dream to stay in! First off the staff was super communicative before and during our stay here. We got greeted with some sparkling cider on arrival and were walked to our room. The whole location was so beautiful and quiet all you could hear were the waves and seagulls from our room. They had some chocolate waiting for us in the room and nice robes. The bed was so comfortable and whole room was clean. It was a small room so don't be surprised by that. They had cookies from 7-8pm baked in house and honestly may have been the star of the show! They were some of the best cookies we've ever had. They also let us know that we were free to hang out in the lobby which we did since it was so beautiful. You can even borrow some binoculars from the front desk. I wish I remembered her name but the night time supervisor was so helpful throughout our stay and so kind! The breakfast area was equally as beautiful with breath taking views! Such an amazing stay in downtown pacific grove! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful all the way from facilitating easy check in to recommending nearby places for a bite. At the beginning of August 2025, we treated ourselves to a night in the Bellevue room to celebrate, after dropping my state retirement packet in nearby San Jose. This was such an amazing treat. I've driven by this Inn many times on visits to family in the area. I've literally always wanted to stay in this beautiful, historic inn. Our room had a little living area with sofa, featuring a direct view of the ocean and Lover's Point. I could have sat there for days enjoying the view. Our accommodations were exceptional, with a comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and friendly staff. The only negative was that staff were pretty rigid on the check in time (no early check in), even though it seems unlikely the room was not ready for a weeknight stay. The stay included a full breakfast, which was very tasty. I would like to return...will have to be another 'big' occasion, because ocean view rooms are not cheap, even midweek. You can't beat the location though. read more

Great honeymoon stay! Very clean room. Stayed in Crespi-- it had a very great ocean view. Very worth it to have a view at this spot. Can hear the ocean waves crashing throughout the night with the window open which we loved. Quiet and quaint when we went, decent breakfast (vegetarian), no intermittent house keeping which we didn't know but no biggie. For the price point we did wish they did a tidy up service along with helping carry bags up... and some staff were not as friendly. But overall the place made up with cleanliness, quality, the other kind helpful staff, wine hour/cookie hour, and views. You're definitely paying for the location and quaint old/victorian charm experience. Definitely inn vibes, not a 5 star hotel (I would say a 5 star inn tho!). Close to the heart of Monterey and Carmel-- a great board walk... we walked everywhere. Liked the food in Carmel more than Monterey. 10/10 would stay again. read more

Staying here is just surreal. It's so beautiful and luxurious! We spend hours sitting in the oh-so-comfortable chairs, looking at the view of the majestic Monterey Bay. Came back for our 1 year anniversary. Stayed in a different room this time: Chautauqua room. A lot smaller, yet still cozy. Had some views of the ocean though limited. The room was in the breakfast building, it also had a second door directly to the outside / parking lot, which was nice. This is hands down my favorite place in all the world to stay and i think i may just have to make it a tradition to come here at least once a year. The location is perfect and has a great view. We stayed in the Mariposa Room which is on the second floor and has an unbelievable view of lovers point and the bay. The room has an electric fireplace which is not that bright and produces no heat. It basically takes up spaces and does not add to the ambiance of the room. The inn is great the lobby area and furniture is fantastic We checked in with the staff to a glass of champagne. The site indicated a wine and cheese which has not been done since the pandemic. They need to update. The check in offer of 20% off rate and n January was not honored they said that was if you paid ahead on a the website it would be taken then But the fact you would not be able to check in at home this made little sense. The breakfast was good multiple types of cereal fresh fruit, Eggs and Potatoes ( these items were a bit cold and not held to temperature even when they first came out. Juice, tea and coffee was available. Breakfast is between 8 and 10 and was serve yourself. Parking 2 handicap and 3 regular otherwise park on the side streets the Main Street has a 2 hour posted time limit. The location is a short walk to the aquarium, cannery row and downtown Pacific Grove you could park and get around with out moving your car The room we were in was a bit tight but you could sit in chairs to look out the windows and move them to walk around the bed at night. Plugs are limited so CPAP users beware. K Cup in the room and water. Shower has soap hair wash and Conditioner. Two robes one size does not fit all. Would I comeback with out a question read more

The Good: *Greeted with a glass on champagne upon check-in. *Superlative service at check-in by the staff--we forgot his name, but we think it's "Alex." =/ *The building is incredible to look at, and I couldn't take my eyes off it. *Amazing ocean views from every room. *Easy access to the Monterey Bay Trail and Lover's Point Park. *Lots of restaurants within a very short walking distance, or only 1.3 miles from Cannery Row. *Complimentary breakfast is high class with some really tasty dishes and fresh-baked goodies. *Bed is very comfy *Fireplace is a nice romantic touch *Small private lot but street parking is free--unless you park southbound on Ocean View Blvd. Watch the signs, kids. *Wi-Fi is very not bad. The Meh: *Not a fan of their pillows *We stayed in the Carriage House, and the room was lovely, but a bit small for the price. The Ugly: *The price to stay here is downright obscene, if you ask me. What a gem! Our first time visiting Monterey, and we were delighted at this wonderful inn located seaside where our room had a splendid view of the Monterey Bay. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly- Alex in particular was great upon our arrival. You are greeted with champagne upon arrival, a nice touch to start an enjoyable vacation. The rooms are classically designed, but has amenities like plush robes, heated bathrooms, and blackout curtains. There is no TV but our room had an electric fireplace for a nice romantic touch. Breakfast in the morning was fantastic and has a spread of vegetarian options, toasts, fruits, fresh pastries, and cereals/grains. The options changed during our stay, and was impressed with the spread and tastes each day. We are hoping to come back to enjoy Seven Gables in the summer! read more

We booked Jewell Cottage for 1 night and it turned out to be one of my most unforgettable stays in California. We've stayed here twice; once in the Fall and once in late Spring. The inn is beautiful with great views. It is right across the ocean. You can't ask for a better location. It is a nice, short drive from the Bay Area, maybe an hour and a half or so, depending where you're coming from in Northern California. Our first stay was during the first year of the Covid pandemic in the Fall. It is the lower floor unit, the Fairlawn Room. IMO, it had one of the best views of the ocean. We were greeted with complimentary bottles of champagne and snacks in a tray. The room and bath was immaculate and clean. Nice bedding, linens. No TV, no microwave, no frig. The drawback is that the outside stairs going to the office is to the side and above the room. Sometimes you can hear the pitter patter of people walking up the stairs, and at times you can hear people talking in the office through the wall if they are loud. No complimentary food service due to the pandemic. The next time we visited was the following Spring. We stayed in the Steinbeck room. Located on the second floor, it is much more private, quieter, larger and has a great view looking towards Lover's Point. This is our favorite room. Love the decor, much more elegantly done with a gorgeous chandelier above. Access to the reception and dining hall is through another door that leads out to the hallway. During this stay, there was no complimentary champagne or snacks. We were bummed, but it's ok, we managed. Complimentary breakfast was served in the dining area, nice waiters, great selection of food items and beverages. The bath towels are nice and plush. However, because the location is cool, and the towels are so thick, they don't dry fast enough naturally by the time you have to use it again. The staff was very pleasant. The reception area was beautiful with antique furniture. There are a few spots of parking space in their private lot, but there is also ample street parking around the inn. The inn was recently sold to a new owner. Unfortunately the room rates have increased as well, and we no longer can afford to stay here. We enjoyed our stays and highly recommend it! read more

I'm super confused by the reviews and photos. We stayed in the top floor of the main house. The bed was completely uncomfortable, the bathroom was tiny, the interior was dated and tired and the room smelled moldy. Our room looked nothing like the website photos. The front desk person read us a series of rules without saying "welcome in!" We arrived at 5 pm and were too late for a glass of wine. And we arrived home from dinner too late for a cookie. The front desk person made all of this VERY clear to us as "rules are rules" no hospitality from her. The breakfast was blah but the breakfast staff were very kind and friendly. This was not worth $600 a night. I'm completely boggled by the positive reviews. read more

It's so disappointing and so overrated. My wife and I arrived excitedly. The receptionist, however, was a deadbeat. The first words out of her mouth were, "Give me your picture ID and credit card." She then explained the multiple rules and the charges, if any, were broken. As an afterthought at the end, she wished us a hollow-sounding happy anniversary. There are only three parking spaces so street parking is required. We were led to our room, which involved three flights of stairs. There was no offer to assist with our luggage. The room was unbelievably small, with the bed taking up most of it. The bathroom was TINY. I don't know where we would have put all our luggage. There was a dresser but no closet that I can recall. There was a view, but that was little consolation. It was astonishing that we were paying such a premium for this room. I immediately retrieved my computer and booked us a short distance away at the Monterey Plaza Hotel, which was perfect. We left The Seven Gables Inn immediately and declined to spend time here. Unfortunately, we had prepaid to save some money. My advice is to NOT prepay. I can't believe all the 5-star reviews! read more

It was out 12th year wedding anniversary. This is our 4th time staying here and we absolutely are still in love with the Seven Gables Inn. The previous owners sold this lovely Inn and we are so happy things have not changed . Staff is wonderful and grounds are still calm, peaceful and beautiful. The property is beautiful, both receptionists were pleasant and kind. However, management, at 0820 I received a phone call from (831) 620-1234 to inform me that, "breakfast has been cancelled due to an emergency ", however , the breakfast room was actually right in front of our room and I passed it several times to check out and it was very much fully in service. Upon check out I asked Janae, I believe her name was, for clarification if breakfast had been cancelled. She said it had not and was confused on why someone would have said that. This made me feel extremely uncomfortable and discriminated against . It is disappointing that this hindered the memories I was creating. Please be kinder . read more

What a beautiful Victorian with a lot of history. Short stay but so worth it. We picked Julia's room. Queen bed and as expected with Victorian decor and modern-day amenities such as a comfy bed, and a Keurig coffee maker. Most of all, what a view. The bay window looks out to the ocean. Friendly front desk staff with lots of historical information about this beautiful Inn. Quick and easy check-in. They greeted me and offered me champagne, I'm allergic so they offered me apple cider. They even walked you to your room area. What a service. Street parking was not a problem, it was a Thursday evening. read more

Our stay was in early March of 2022, but I forgot to review! This B&B is absolutely stunning. The historical homes are lavish and beautifully maintained. All staff we encountered were exceptionally friendly and polite. The door locks are a bit tricky, but they demonstrated a second time when we couldn't get back in our room. We stayed in the Seascape room and I was absolutely blown away by the beautiful decor and the stunning view. Waking up staring out into the Bay was a delightful experience. Stayed in the Lover's Point Room in the Main House, the beginning of July. Beautiful king-sized bedroom with very nice stained glass windows walking upstairs to the room, as well as one in the room. We had a partial ocean view. Loved that the windows could be opened. It was quiet once it got dark and the seagulls went to sleep. (I didn't know they could be so constantly vocal.) The bed was comfortable though a bit too soft, with four pillows of varying firmness. The bathroom was wonderful with a heater to warm it up and a waterfall shower head in the step-in shower. The towels were wonderfully thick. The breakfast each morning was plentiful and good even though the only protein were eggs. For the fruit juices, I appreciated I could mix both orange and grapefruit juice in my glass! Each breakfast was different too! Plus there was 4pm wine and 7pm cookies! Anything needed was fulfilled promptly. All personnel were very gracious. We would come here again! read more

It's the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway. We came for our anniversary. Stayed in the Di Blasi room, beautifully detailed and super clean. The view is mostly of the garden but if you sit in the chair to the left, you'll get a nice view Io the water. Lover's Point is a a 2 minute walk where you can sit at the beach, rent some bikes for a coastal ride, play beach ball or just take in the amazing views. I love that it's quiet at night, you can open your window and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep. We arrived at night so only noticed on the way to breakfast, the garden ground is beautiful and well kept, cute for photos. They served quiche, eggs, hash, fruit, scones, cereal, oatmeal to name a few. The staff were all super nice. They taught me a lot about the history of the house. Breath Taking! This inn was amazing, views were straight out of a magazine took my husband here for his birthday weekend and he was so pleased. The inn was clean and quiet. I stayed in the Seascape room and the views from that room are just out of this world. The reception area was just Gorgeous!! Wonderful Victorian Decor. Complimentary Champagne or Apple cider on arrival with a tray of snacks. Due to COVID there was no breakfast offers we had to eat out all times; also no appliances just a coffee maker. Love love love this place. From the cute little cottages, to the gorgeous views, and the included wine and cheese. Let's not forget the nightly cookies and milk. All of the staff is extremely friendly. There is so much history in this inn, all you have to do is ask. So many of the things around the inn are handmade by the owner, including the chandeliers! The inn is so close to lovers pointe. There is easy access to a running and bike trail directly across the street where you can stroll along the ocean. There are several spots for beautiful pictures. Our suite, the garden inn, was so quaint. We had plantation shutters that opened up with a view of lavender, a pergola, and then the ocean. It was great. The only bad thing I had to say about this place was that they could not accommodate 3 people. I even bought their jacket which was reasonably priced. One day I will learn my lesson. Until then, I will forget a jacket every time I visit Monterey and end up buying one. One of my favorite things about our stay was the breakfast. Man, what a feast! I had hot tea, cereal, fresh fruit, about 5 different danishes, delicious hashbrowns, a poached egg and toast. Thank goodness for that running trail across the street! read more

Views in 2 rooms are 10 stars but the rest of INN and rooms are a pale shadow of what it used to be and not worth it unless you get either of those rooms. The food is Holiday INN express quality and not very good. No wine and cheese hour anymore, no cookies in the evening it's pretty much run like a small hotel or something at least that's its vibe now. Not really worth it sadly. What a special place to stay! From the moment we arrived the staff was friendly and welcomed us with a glass of champagne. We stayed in the two bedroom Jewel Cottage which was perfect for two couples. It had a spacious living room with fireplace and a kitchen with refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. The two bedrooms were beautiful, the beds and linens luxurious, and the bathrooms well appointed. The artwork, stained glass and furnishings throughout the cottage were delightful. And the ocean views were lovely out of every room. Breakfast was delicious and served in a lovely dining room. I recently stayed at the Seven Gables Inn in Pacific Grove. I've stayed there many times before, but not since the purchase by Kirkwood. I was concerned that a corporation-run Seven Gables would lose much of its charm and service. Unfortunately, I was 100% correct. First, in the past, before Kirkwood, Seven Gables offered a nightly wine and cheese hour in the sitting room around 5 pm. They then offered delicious cookies and other treats before bed. This is what really gave the place its charm. Kirkwood has now replaced these with a "happy hour." Meaning, a glass of champagne at check in.. That's it. A definite downgrade in service. Next, in the morning they offer a "vegetarian breakfast" Apparently, Kirkwood doesn't know or care that only about 5% of the US is vegetarian. This breakfast was average at best. Surpassed by your local Holiday Inn Express in my opinion. Where's the beef??!! Seven Gables still has world-class views and the rooms are still quite nice. However, the quaint human touches no longer exist making this just another B&B in my opinion. Seven Gables still charges very premium rates. Unfortunately, a premium is no longer put on service by the very corporate Kirkwood. I do not recommend. read more

Sorry for misspelling) extremely attentive, texted a daily reminder the lobby would be closing at 9pm if any supplies were needed. (Nice touch appreciated the reminder). Property is immaculately kept. Ocean Mist Room was gorgeous, spacious, spotless, clean and well maintained with a stunning view. Breakfast menu offered a variety of options, changing daily. Great location, across the street was walking trail along the ocean and Lovers Point. Will definitely stay here again. read more
